If you are any type of fan of George Jones, this CD is a must. This CD has his early songs and also has his best songs, "Just a Girl I Used to Know", Window Up Above" She Thinks I Still Care" just to name my top three favorites. George's style and the songs he sings makes him one of a kind. Most of the classic Country songs from days gone by, one knew who the artists were the moment they begin to sing or with just a few notes you knew what song it was going to play. Again, this CD is Ultra Country Gold George Jones. I highly recommend this Classic CD !

This CD is great and I have to say, these are probably his best songs. He is a great singer but he sounded better back then. And the music is also great with why baby why, and white lightin. And favorite George Jones song "she thinks I still care" you cant miss. And these are real country songs you just dont hear no more.

and this compilation shows why George Jones is a country singing legend.

If you are a fan of classic country this is a must have. George Jones is a legend that not many singers can come close to,
and only Nashville singers wish they could be.

The early years of George Jones were the premium years....and this CD is a snapshot of an era of perfection. While George Jones flourished in the '70's and early '80's, he adopted the same tired sound reflective of that decade, just as Merle Haggard did; and his later sound doesn't come close to his early stuff. This album has 18 tracks, including the honky-tonk sound that got him started, and a few of the love songs/ballads that would later be his signature sound. I never understood the collaboration George did with Gene Pitney, but "I've Got Five Dollars..." is included here, as well. I would have preferred a few more duets with Melba Montgomery; this was one incredible duet, and some say it was better than those with Tammy. But, overall, this is a fine collection of straight forward Country Music, reflective of those golden years of Buck Owens, Ernest Tubb, and Faron Young. The recordings are original, but pure and nearly perfect sound.....buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The Stuff Upon Which Legends are Built.......2002-11-16

This is the definitive George Jones collection as far as I am concerned. Jones has continued to make geat records, and is still a major contender for 'cool' in country music, but the early material on this CD is what MADE the legend upon which Mr. Jones was able to sustain his career.

This is almost rockabilly; the stuff that drove crowds wild for legendary performers like Elvis Presley, Marty Robbins, and dozens of other ''music greats'' who acknowledge that they owed as much to Country Music as they did to Rhythm and Blues for their success.

Jones' later work with Tammy Wynette and Epic records was more commercially succssful, and it is also excellent. But his early work has a level of intensity and energy that the later work is missing. So his best work with Tammy Wynette and on his own is no less essential for a complete collection of good music. But unlike the later music, this early material just sounds like "must-own" material. Listening to it makes one realize why Jones has been such a success for so long: HIS talent, not engineering and production talent, is at the core.

Many fans of today's country & western radio might find this a bit too close to rock and roll. But people who think too much of today's radio-format-friendly Country and western is just "velveeta music" (not only cheesy, but also synthetic and artificial), who want more upbeat cover-songs by Alan Jackson, Dwight Yoakam, or Brooks & Dunn will find this to be a breath of fresh air.

    5 out of 5 stars Maybe the Only Elgar Compilation You'll Ever Need........2006-12-07

    Naxos' "Very Best Of Elgar" compilation is probably the most comprehensive overview ever of Edward Elgar's best known work. For those who are unfamiliar with this great British composer, this double-CD set serves as a perfect introduction to his music. Two out of five of his famous "Pomp and Circumstance" marches are here as well as excerpts from his two symphonies, violin and cello concertos, the famous "Nimrod" movement from his "Enigma Variations" and the "Cockaigne Overture".
    Also included in this set are lesser known works such as excerpts from his Violin Sonata, String Quartet, Piano Quintet and choral works (Ave verum corpus, The Apostles and The Dream of Gerontius).
    Each disc features over 70 minutes of music and includes brief annotations about the music in the CD booklet.
    With all this said, "The Very Best Of Elgar" is a very satisfying compilation and is very well put together.

    If it weren't for the maudlin "He Stopped Loving Her Today", I may not have got this CD, but I knew I could expect some good sounds from George Jones. It is said that George Jones didn't want to record "He Stopped Loving Her Today" but then certainly wished he had more of his signature award winning song.

    Not known for songwriting, his speciality is just his voice..he can sing so many covers and it is amazing. And here, he does a beautiful version of Kenny Rogers' "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town". I love that song and George does it justice. "Am I That Easy to Forget" sounds beautiful too.

    Equally great interpretation is "Saginaw Michigan", and "I Threw Away the Rose". This is an excellent CD and if you love the sound of George Jones, you will cherish this too. This music is a departure from some of his standard hits. It's refreshing .....MzRizz

    Departed but never to be forgotten, George Jones graced us with some of the most sincere and touching country music of the 20th century. His masterful voice and some of his very best work are chronicled in this small but well done collection. Included are He Stopped Loving Her Today, Saginaw Michigan, and Your Angel Steps Out of Heaven. And George's version of There Goes My Everything. My favorite, although not originally sung by George, is I Threw Away the Rose. (The Days of Wine and Roses). There may be other fine studio recordings of George... I don't know, and I can't say every cut is a memory shocker, but I can vouch for this, GEORGE JONES At His Best, this GREAT CD. Crank it up a bit, okay? Pop a top and sit back. ...and hand ME one over here! Once! I lived! A life, of wine, and Ro---ses!

      There's a lot of different George Jones's in his career, but the one in this collection is all honky tonk. These are the best tracks from his Mercury and Starday sides and is the first compilation to venture into this territory. Most of this was included later in the 1994 collection "Cup of Lonliness", but listening straight through from 1-20 on this CD is a stark reminder that once upon a time, George Jones could honky tonk with the best of them. He may be the best voice ever recorded in country music, but these sides are his truest legacy.

      This album I stumbled on accidently. Once I saw it, being a life long follower of GJ, I had to try it! Must I say more? I am glad that I listened to it, not surprised that I'd enjoy it, but am sorry that I bought it on tape! Now I am repurchasing it on CD and will continue to appreciate and enjoy the music that I believe is lost but with this album NOT be forgotten!! To sum up in a word, "GREAT"!!!

          The sound quality and mastering is actually quite good for this collection of 20 Musicor-era Jones tunes, when GJ was in top voice. Most of these songs seem to have come from the same 2 LP set on Musicor, called Musical Loves Life and Sorrows of America's Great Country Star (some editions came with a photo of GJ). As a serious Jones collector and part-time country LP dealer, I had several copies of the 2 LP set pass through my collection, and every one had the same skip on the song Color of the Blues; obviously a tape-to-disc mastering error. And, yes, the same song with the same skip is to be found on this LP. Buy this CD for the other 19 songs, and look for Color of the Blues elsewhere; it can be found on several other Jones CD's.
