If I had to recommend just one CD from Norman Brown, "After the Storm" would be it. Still his best effort, the CD that introduced me to his music and the one I introduced my wife to. Gifted guitarist, every bit the caliber of George Benson. Though vocally, not in the same league. And that's why I'd recommned this one over later releases. He sticks to what he does best; instrumentals. "After the Storm" is as smooth as contemporary jazz get's.

I only just discovered this CD after buying and loving his album, "Just Chillin'." I love that CD and "After the Storm" is my newest love! I think the entire album is wonderful! But here are a few favorites: "Take Me There," "After The Storm," "Lydian," & "El Dulce Sol." However, the classics such as "For The Love Of You" & "Any Love" are nice too. I think it just flows well like a smooth jazz album should. It's well worth every penny. It's nice to get your money's worth! Listen, see what you think!

this is a very very nice CD, one of Brown's best. I would own it if just for the track LYDIAN. I absolutely love the groove and feel of that track and Brown's playing is right on. The songs are good and the production is superb. If you like smooth jazz with a bit of an R&B flavor I would recommend this disc. Listen to LYDIAN, crank it up and I dare you not to tap your feet.

I have been a Norman Brown fan for years. This CD was one of the first Jazz cd's I bought and I've never looked back. I have listened to all his releases and I have to say that this one is my all time favorite. As I go back and listen to this CD it sounds just as good as it did the first time I listened to it. Even though he was beginning his career, I believe that it is some of the most heartfelt, soul driven guitar playing I have ever heard. Every time I listen to Norman play, its as if he was singing through the guitar. You have got to get this.

      "New Monica!" shouts Missy Elliott on the single "So Gone," one of five cuts she co-wrote and produced for After the Storm, the singer's first domestic album since 1998. (An earlier, much different version of the record is available as the import All Eyez on Me.) Drama is the key word here, from the disc's title on down. Miss E, of course, brings much spark and grit, but even some of the non-Elliott cuts are virtual arias of romance and self-fulfillment, with Monica Arnold pledging her devotion on one track, demanding her key back on another.       Richard Elliot, a former member of Tower of Power, Kittyhawk, and the Yellowjackets, is a tenor saxophonist with a creamy tone and a penchant for pretty background melodies played over steady but uninspired rhythm tracks. After Dark, includes a heavy-breathing Jeffrey Osborne vocal on "If Tomorrow Never Comes," a synth-drenched remake of "Bridge over Troubled Water," and two house-influenced dance tracks produced by Tony Terry and a reunion with Tower of Power on "The Boys from the Bay." Like a number of smooth jazz contenders, Elliot is a pop instrumentalist rather than a jazz musician, but even as a popster he has trouble finding a strong personality for his recordings. --Geoffrey Himes

      This was the first CD by Richard Elliot that I had the privilege to Listen to. Needless to say I have several of his CD's in my collection now. Without going into a lot of detail it is still my favorite(maybe because it was my first). There is not a bad song on it. Richard is melodic, soulful, and smooth. At the same time he is funky, brash, and bold. The man can play any style and play it well. Just one warning! If you buy one of his CD's you will want them all! Happy Listening.

      I own ten of Richard Elliot's albums and this one is definately the best. I have heard people saying that his solos sound as if they were written out rather than improvised, but does it really matter? The point is to make it sound good. This album has a great mixture of different styles of music. There is not one song on this CD that I do not like. My favorite songs on this album are "If Tommorow Never Comes" and "The Boys from the Bay." If you like Richard Elliot's other albums, I highly suggest buying this one. By the way, if you like Richard Elliot's music, check out music by Richard Smith, Kim Waters, and Nite Flyte.

      I am a fan of this series as it often is the only place to find old school classics. Songs that were popular back in the day, but by either one-hit-wonders, or artists with out of print recordings. This CD is the only place I could find "Firestarter" by Tease, and "Sugar Free" by Juicy. I also enjoyed "Who Do You Love" by Bernard Wright and "Come into My Life" by Joyce Sims. This collection is from a day when slow jams were more than just the whining you hear on the radio today. There was rhythm, there was funk, there was soul.

      A very nice selcetion of songs that are nice there is a song by Eugene Wilde who was popular in the 80's but he didn't get a lot of exposure who is a good singer he has a song on here called don't say no tonight and firestarter, I'm curious, Silver Shadow, Slow down and many other great songs and I would recommend anyone to buy this album I am almost finish with completing the whole collection of smooth grooves but this is a nice cd to add to your romance cds!!!

      Most of the songs included on this great compilation deservedly became Quiet Storm classics. "Firestarter" (Tease), "Gotta Get You Home Tonight" (Eugene Wilde), "Silver Shadow" (Atlantic Starr), "Come Into My Life" (Joyce Sims) and "Sugar Free" (Juicy) still sound great after all these years. I did NOT give these otherwise-superb CD a 5-star rating because the songs by Oddysey and Reel To Real do not belong on a Quiet Storm-oriented anthology. If you are a fan of 1980s R&B, however, you shouldn't pass this CD up. I also like the front and back inserts' photos also.

      This is without doubt one of the finest in the Smooth Grooves series. A good mix of laid back soul (Juicy, Tease, Keni Burke) and smooth dancers (Bernard Wright, Odyssey, Atlantic Starr). Lots of the tracks here have had a hammering on my soul radio show, and feedback has been excellent. Do yourselves a favour, if you've not purchased this yet, don't waste time putting it on your wants list, get it now.

          Wow! This CD is truly inspired from beginning to end. Diane's 'signature song' "Hello, Haven't I Seen You Before" is riddled with a new jazzy energy. "Comes Love" is a sultry vocal with a salsa-jazz arrangement. "Benediction" is an amazing tribute to Cannonball Adderly. Diane's phrasing on "Detour Ahead" is genius. "Nine" strikes a mood of idealism and promise. "When Morning Comes" is vocally extraordinary! The piano of David Torkanowsky sets musical magic to the arrangements. But this work doesn't just stop there. Added artists include George Duke, Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove, Hubert Laws, Luis Conte, and Everette Harp, to name a few. Absolutely, one of Dianne Reeve's best.

          This is one CD that I have just about wore out. She masters these songs as only she can. I love the way she turned one of her own popular songs (Haven't I seen you before)around with a big band feel. Her cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" just makes you want to melt. The entire album is a must have. I worked a 16 hour day re-merchandising a a store with this CD carring me through the last 5 hours and I still wanted to listen.

          The title of this album more likely than not refers to the one that came before it. 1994's "Art and Survival" was a strikingly bold and sometimes tumultuous work, finding Dianne Reeves taking more risks with one record than most jazz singers do in an entire career. Its followup, "Quiet After the Storm," is exactly what its title suggests: a more subdued, laid-back affair after Reeves got the energy of its predecessor out of her system. Unfortunately, inconsistency keeps the project out of Dianne's usual realm of greatness.

          Things get off to a strong start with a reworked "Hello, Haven't I Seen You Before," previously a pop-flavored track on her "Never Too Far" release. The transition works surprisingly well, polished by a marvelous scat and ad lib section near the end. Then Reeves offers up a delicious version of the chestnut "Comes Love," surely one of her finest readings of a standard. "Smile," which she co-wrote with producer George Duke, finds her in the familiar territory of pop-flavored jazz, and the track's brightness is nearly blinding.

          "Country Preacher" is better in theory than in practice, however. Writing lyrics for a classic Julian "Cannonball" Adderly tune as a tribute is a nice idea, but the hookless melody fails to leave a lasting impression. Similarly troubled are versions of Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" and Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now." While Reeves certainly gets points for versatility, both cuts are too politely arranged; neither song reaches a musical or vocal peak, and while they're definitely pleasant, at this point we simply expect more from Dianne's renditions. Furthermore, the folky, foreign-language "Yemanja/Sargaco Mar" sounds thumpingly out of place; inclusion on "Art and Survival" would have made much more sense.

          Much better is her version of the standard "Detour Ahead," boasting a killer piano solo by Jacky Terrasson and another masterful Reeves vocal. The arrangement on the Harold Arlen classic "Sing My Heart" is simply devine, the sentimental ode to childhood "Nine" features one of Dianne's best lyrics, and the sultry jazz waltz of "When Morning Comes (Jasmine)," complete with intoxicating flute solo, is worth the price of admission all on its own. In the end, fans of Dianne's full-bodied, soulful vocals will definitely not want to miss the high points of "Quiet After the Storm"...but you might want to learn how to program your CD player first.

          Dianne Reeves is one of my favorite singers. This album is one of her best. I like it so much because it combines lots of different musical styles and still holds itself together as an "album". This one is right behind Dianne's "Art & Survival" album as one of my favorites (by the way, "Art & Survival" is nowhere to be found on Amazon....)

          Dianne is sexy and jazzy with COMES LOVE and WHEN MORNING COMES. She does an incredible interpretation of BOTH SIDES NOW -- you can really feel her act/sing the lyric on this one. NINE is a great childhood song that has a driving, fun arrangement. And IN A SENTIMENTAL MOOD is Dianne's take on a classic tune.

          Dianne Reeves sings with such emotion. She has a distinctive jazzy technique, but also has a way with a lyric. Her song selections have always impressed me.

          Enjoy this one!
