About the Artist
Ralph D. Smith, born in Greenville, South Carolina on April 23, 1921 was an early pioneer in country-western "hillbilly" music. Later when the WW2 broke out he entertained comrades from Texas, California, to throughout Europe as he proudly served in the 100th Infantry Division 398th regiment 1st Battallion, Company "C" After the war he returns home to marry and the civilian life, but music goes with him from the battlefields of war to battle which finally takes his life, colon cancer July 28, 1999.
Product Description
Funded in part by a grant from the The South Carolina Arts Commission and National Endowment for the Arts, this CD together with 16 page full color booklet, is dedicated toall World War 2 combat soldier-musicians and/or entertainers who provided dual service to our country, most often without pay or proper recognition.
Ralph Smith's story, together with other soldier performers like him and the music they performed helped to reflect the hopes, dreams, concerns and values of the average American during a most chaotic and uncertain time during the World War period. This CD also reflects a "commonness" and "life in the southern Mill village era" that appeals to all the history and military buffs and other scholars by reminding us our own family, friends and familiar places.
