“I was impressed with the clarity and pureness of Ann's voice. The best cuts on the CD, I think, are the title cut, ‘One Heart, One Mind', and the cover of ‘Louisiana Man.' I think they captured the spirit of the original in this update.

‘Teardrops From My Heart' is a good song, well sung. ‘Lonely Time' is another good cut. ‘You Know Why' is a good song and Ann sings it well.

‘Cotton Patch Rag' has some good fiddle work. We don't often run into instrumentals these days so this was a treat.”

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. Howard has teamed here again with frequent collaborator James Horner, and it's the composer who deftly shades the film's difficult emotional landscape and helps impart a compelling humanity. Horner's first task is not inconsiderable: musically portraying the arcane realm of mathematical theorems that are the story's backdrop. In doing so, the composer leans heavily on modern minimalist technique, bright flourishes that recur briefly throughout an orchestral score that increasingly reflects Nash's bleak inner landscape in its quietly somber and brooding tones. And while Horner has frequently been accused of excessively repeating himself in his scores, the neo-minimalist gambit employed on this reflectively pastoral, postmodernist soundscape neatly nips such criticism in the bud. Nash's triumph is ultimately an intensely personal one, well reflected in Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's lilting performance of the Horner/Will Jennings ballad "All Love Can Be." As other reviewers will tell you yes this is another Horner machine made soundtrack. But it still sounds good! If you are a Horner fan by all means buy it otherwise "at your own risk"!

And another thing that gets me is no one even bothered to mention "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World" I happened to like this one this is the song that plays when he is in the hospital.

a beautiful score.......2007-02-09

James Horner's soundtrack for A BEAUTIFUL MIND is as psychologically intense as the film it so effectively embellishes.

Charlotte Church provides an appropriately eerie and largely non-verbal soprano to this remarkable motion picture score, yet one that would seem only quirky were it not so beautifully embedded in a musical stream that draws one inexorably and almost vicariously into the emotional turbulence of the Princeton mathematician John Nash.

There is an angelic nature to the shape and texture of this music, one that is able to turn demonic as the story line requires. Both by brilliance and by dementia, Nash seems the object of external forces, rising with supreme heroism (at least in the film's version of events) to conquer. The music is there at each score, coaxing the viewer into empathic solidarity with this deeply troubled man and his long-suffering and preternaturally beautiful wife.

This is mood music of the deeply engaging variety. Its lush tonal landscape is achieved under the baton of the composer himself. The score's vast range of volume and expression would certainly have made it a joy to watch in performance.

Alas, we don't have that.

But we have this.

An ethereal, compelling, even gripping tone poem. Buy it.

The sound track for "A Beautiful Mind" stayed with me long after the movie. The CD has all the themes that made the movie so emotionally powerfull. James Horner, composer and conductor, perfectly matches the excitement of genius and the terror of mental disability. Charlotte Church's clear and gentle voice compliments the music and used instrumentally creates a haunting refrain. I loved the movie and this music is wonderful.

This is one of the darkest and most emotional soundtrack, and yet it is filled with more inspiring songs.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Amazon sent me some kind of funky CD "enhanced" version that did not play in a normal CD player. When I wrote about it some person made it very clear the it was my error -- I guess I should know that I am not very knowledgable. This soundtrack is like LOTR in that you can put it on in the background and play it over and over.

Very surprised it didn't win an Oscar.......2003-09-26

This soundtrack is one of the most powerful soundtracks I've ever listen to. I believe Howard Shore won an Oscar for his soundtrack to Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring the same year that A Beautiful Mind came out... unfortunately, Horner was robbed that year, although I also too love Shore's score.

Horner opens with "A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics." It comepletely draws the listener, or watcher (if viewing the movie), in. The music literally sounds like a Kaleidoscope, as if one could litterally HEAR the different colors ... and yet not randomly, but in a cohesive mathimatical way. And then, approximately one and a half minutes into the piece, a sobering, more pensive movement, yet colored again with the interesting flurishes abundant in the first minute and a half.

I've never reviewed music before, but have been an avid listener to scores and soundtracks for years. This, along with the single piece from Castaway by Alan Silvestri, and both the scores from Empire of the Sun and Hook by John Williams, TOPS the list of all time favorites. Check 'em out!

Awesome Sound Quality.......2003-06-02

I saw this movie and was very impressed with it. Russel Crowe and Jennifer Connelly put on wonderful performances. Although one of the best parts of this movie is the haunting soundtrack. There is a bit of mathematical precision to the music and because of the multichannel aspect of the SACD, the room is filled with music. One of the things I like about this format is the fuzzyness of the music. You can hear the reverberations and things and they aren't cleaned out by the clipping. Given all the interplay on this soundtrack, this is probably the best format to hear it on.

O'Reilly and Athony rock again.......2005-11-25

As an "Englishman in New York" I'm constantly amazed how bands like Tammany Hall NYC don't get more coverage in the US, and ultimately "discovered".

On marathon, O'Reilly and Anthony have put together another fine set, mixing a slightly harder edged electric sound with their now classic, accoustic guitars. If you are a NY City resident you'll recognise O'Reillys lyrics, they are either places you've been, things you've done, or thoughts you've had. From "be safe" to the title track, "marathon" these are the thoughts of New York, the soundtrack of the sidewalk!

This cd is what their limited release cd "Shiner" should have been, the story of a city. The new tracks "beyond an ocean", "nightmare on the make", "holdin out", "coffee and cake" and "celings in the sky, finish what they started and hang together better in both style and sound.

Of the new tracks "beyond an ocean" gives O'Reillys vocals a good run, and is symphonic with the lead guitar. A Police riff'd "nightmare on the make" brings a sax into the mix and is a real toe tapper. "coffee and cake" does it for me, it harks back to their earlier accoustic successes that many will have heard from HBO, but few would know were from Tammany Hall NYC.

For the life of me I can't work out who or what "celings in the sky" reminds me of? However, I've been there. Melancholic, rhythmic, and euphoric, I can imagine walking over the Brooklyn Bridge as the sun comes up, another great day. The cd closes with "goodnight song" - a long time favorite, another accoustic track laced with just enough electric support. O'Reilly closes the lyrics with "In a night I'll know where my heart lies, and I'll realize what matters most in my mind".

Hey O'Reilly, we should all have your talent!

If you have heard Getawaylands, Back in a Bottle, or Buddy before and enjoyed it then you need this CD! If you have not then you are missing out!

The best way I can describe Tammany Hall NYC's sound is how they describe it themselves on Myspace.com 'The Who without the deafness. Matchbox 20 without the cross over-cheddar. Counting Crows without the Bar band factor. Wilco with hope. Radiohead without the computerized sorrow and bleeps and bloops. The Police without the 80s. Maroon 5 without Stevie Wonder'.

Marathon is a roller coaster ride of emotion, detailing the highs and lows of every day life, from the first to last track you are griped by heartfelt lyrics, vocals, and guitar playing. Although every track is good, the ones that stand out for me are Marathon, beyond an ocean, better homes and walmer days, and ceilings in the sky. But I feel that the individuals mood when listening may shape which songs stand out during listening!

Elisabeth von Trapp, who wrote most of the music and words in this lovely CD, reveals her beautiful spirit and insight to life within and around us. Slowly paced and haunting melodic, her eleven folk songs bid you return quickly to listen and hear her over and over again.

I listened to this CD repeatedly when I first bought it, and, after about six months, I still listen to it regularly--it has worn very well on my ears. All of the songs are fresh, peaceful and well sung. As one with strong theological and artistic sensibilities, I feel that von Trapp reset Newman's "Lead Kindly Light" spledidly. To boot, I have played this recording for numerous friends, all of whom, in their diverse tastes, gave rave reviews. This CD is a must buy.

Pleasant but not satisfying.......2001-10-26

No more beautiful voice could do these songs more justice. However, a better poet could have produced much better lyrics, and a better composer could have produced much better songs. Elisabeth von Trapp lives up to the beautiful folksong performances of her ancestors, but she might perform a much better service to her audience by interpreting others' songs.

Angel voice tells the story.......1999-11-09

Of the eleven selections on her second cd, von Trapp has written the lyrics and music to six and the music to an additional two. Her music is honest and personal, sweet and delicate, yet powerful and dramatic. Elisabeth sings from the heart with clarity and a sense of purpose. Kaiulani recounts the sad tale of the Hawaiian princess; Childhood Home describes in poignant lyrics her parents' hard work. In Twin Angels, a delightful melody without words, Elisabeth hums the voices she felt while inside the Cathedral in Salzburg, Austria, with her grandmother. The von Trapp family home in Vermont provides the title to Cor Unum (One Heart). Maria and Georg von Trapp would be proud of the music and story created and performed by their granddaughter. Listeners will want to pay close attention to every inspiring word as they sit and enjoy von Trapp's angelic voice and message.

One of my favorite albums!.......1999-08-24

For a few months, this have been one of my favorite albums.(Some of them are like this: The Soundtrack of "The Sound of Music," Four last songs by Schwalzkopf, Le nozze di Figaro by Abbado and so on.)

It's very hard for me to chose my favorite song among these songs but I had to do so, I guess I would pick "KAIULANI." Of course, other songs are very wonderful.

One of my aquaitances said to me, "I prefer Ms. Elisabeth von Trapp to Charolotte Church, don't you think so?" I agreed with it.

I recommend it highly! A must buy! I think you won't regret to buy it!
