These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic.
The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity--a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. "Sweet Thing" and a duet with Rodney Crowell on "Nothin' for a Broken Heart" pulsate with Chuck Berry intensity that contrasts with the solid, '60s Memphis groove of "Bet It All on You."
The Reason Why showcases Gill's legendary ease with ballads, several of them enhanced by creative string arrangements by David Campbell (Beck's father), including "What You Don't Say" with LeAnn Rimes and "The Memory of You" with Trisha Yearwood. The stunning "Faint of Heart," a remarkably sultry jazz duet with Diana Krall, could become a standard.
Some Things Never Get Old revisits classic fiddle-steel honky-tonk, music Gill has long reverenced and referenced. "This New Heartache" is straight out of Ray Price. Gill and Patty Loveless tear up "Out of My Mind" and Allison Krauss and Dan Tyminski join in for the waltz "I Can't Let Go." "Don't Pretend with Me" honors Ernest Tubb's honky-tonk primitivism.
Little Brother, all-acoustic and often bluegrass-flavored, shines from beginning to end. Along with "Molly Brown," a stark cautionary about racial violence, Gill sings both "Cold Gray Light of Dawn" and "Give Me the Highway" with the Del McCoury Band. He and Guy Clark close it out with "Almost Home." Despite outstanding past efforts, Gill--one of the top hitmakers of the '90s--hasn't had a Top Ten single since 2000. No matter. His talents and the heart he puts into his writing, singing, and picking remain at their peak. This stellar collection proves it--four times over. --Rich Kienzle
Album Description
In an unmatched outpouring of virtuosity and energy, Vince Gill has created a 4-CD set of 43 new and original songs that MCA Records will release Oct. 17 under the title These Days. The collection is an artistic tour de force that displays Gill's mastery of lyrics and musical styles, ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock.
"I started looking at all these songs I had," the amiable superstar explains, "and going, `Shoot, I want to record that song, and I want to record that song.' I just kept checking with the other musicians to see if they were available. I had no deadlines, no rules or anything like that. So I just kept trying songs."
To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.
Initially, Gill planned to pare down the songs he'd recorded to a single album. Then, in one of the studios he used, he spotted some Beatles memorabilia and recalled that the Fab Four had routinely released multiple albums within the same year.
Gill took the idea to Luke Lewis, Universal Music Group Nashville Co-Chairman, who totally supported his notion of multiple releases. In fact, Lewis came up with an even more radical strategy: he told Vince to go and record more songs that explore his passion for acoustic sounds and release a 4-CD set. And that's exactly what happened.
Gill co-produced These Days with famed keyboardist John Hobbs and sound engineering whiz Justin Niebank.
Customer Reviews:
These Days ~ Vince Gill.......2007-07-07
A lot of the songs are vintage Vince Gill. His guitar playing is nothing short of spectacular. The duets are wonderful. His guest singers blend well with Vince's, oh so sweet, tenor. I love the album, but give it only four stars because so many of the songs are featured on albums I already own.
Inspired by negative reviews.......2007-05-21
Before ordering this CD set, I read most of the reviews on Amazon. A couple of them were very negative. However, I just couldn't believe in a "bad" recording session from Vince Gill. Especially with the great stars who collaborated as guests on many of the cuts.
Well, the good news is the negative reports were just wrong. I like these CD's, there are four in the box set, more every time I listen to them. An excellent product and a great addition to any music collection that loves ballads, country, bluegrass, and yes: Vince!!
These Days by Vince Gill.......2007-05-13
This item is a must buy for all Vince Gill fans. We purchased it after seeing in Vince in concert. The concert was great, but you can't have that all the time. His range as a musician is evident throughout this 4 CD set. Plus, the musicians he surrounds himself with make this a must buy.
Vince Gill - These Days.......2007-05-13
I'm a long time fan of Vince Gill but this album is his best. A must have for any Vince Gill fan!!
Simply awesome !!!.......2007-05-12
This CD set is well worth the money. Actually, it's priced very reasonable. There are alot of new songs. All 4 CD's are excellant.
Again, Vince Gill delivers !!

When Jimmy Buffett eventually becomes the subject of a college course--and given his enduring popularity as a singer-songwriter and author, you know he will someday--here's what'll be on the final exam. Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads is so named because the four-CD collection divides Buffett's collected works among those categories, giving each disc a theme. From early classics such as "Biloxi" and "Come Monday" to more recent fare known only by the Parrothead cognoscenti, this set is the perfect accompaniment to a cool drink and a hammock on a summer afternoon. What kind of cool drink? Well, that'll be on the final, too. --Daniel Durchholz

Ultimate Buffett Collection .......2007-07-02
Most certainly the Ultimate Buffett Collection. Just the Ballads CD is almost worth the price of admission - and you get three other CDs with the songs nicely categorized.
4 stars because these could stand to be remastered from the original tapes -- brought up to speed so it sounds great on your iPhone.
On my 2nd one.......2007-06-03
We wore out the "Boats" CD so I am now ordering one for the house and one for the truck. This particular CD (Boats) has all my favorites on it so I have listened to it countless times over the past 3 or 4 years. I will let my husband have the older copy and I will keep the new one. "A Pirate Looks at Forty" is my favorite, followed closely by "Havana Daydreamin" "One Particular Harbor" "Changes is Latitudes". I really love the old stuff but I also have most of the newer CD's as well. Needless to say, I highly recommend this purchase.
Great beach music.......2007-05-08
I got this CD set for my Dad and by boyfriends dad, they both love it!
I is a great gift that no one refuses!
A MUST for every Parrothead CD collecion.......2007-05-08
I have really enjoyed this collection. I DJ at a country/western night club and I insert Jimmy Buffett album cuts into my play list and my customers really appreciate it. This is a broad collection of songs that are categorically put on different theme discs which make it quick easy refernece for me when needing to find a particular song fast. I also enjoy putting a disc in my car CD player to fit the particular mood I am in. They help me relax and keeps me on a pretty much permanent mental vacation. This is a MUST for the casual and hard-core Jimmy Buffett fan.
Look no further...Margaritaville is here!.......2007-03-09
This is the definitive collection for Jimmy. If you are a fan, this is a must have in the collection. If you are just starting out, pick up this set and I promise you won't be disappointed.
Fins up!

Pontiac is Lyle Lovett's finest album, but it still contains the strengths and weaknesses that have become Lyle's hallmarks. Crack playing, keen observations and clever lyrics, and a neo-traditionalist aesthetic that pulls in everything from Texas folk, honky-tonk and Western swing to old-school pop all shine brightly here, but they're consistently dulled by an ironic distance and a bitterness toward women that approaches misogyny. On Pontiac, the strengths generally win out, however, as Lovett convincingly stalks an old lover ("L.A. County"), says "take my wife, please" ("She's No Lady"), and, on the title track, offers a character sketch that could've been penned by Raymond Carver. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
Multi-sided.......2007-06-01
I'm not sure that this is my personal favorite Lovett album but it's very good. The material is a bit eclectic. He's kind of known for that, and in a way it's interesting, but it seems a bit odd if you're not expecting it. It's got a little of everything: Discontent ("Pontiac"), humor, ("Give Back My Heart"), a little cynicism ("M-O-N-E-Y"), and one good old-fashioned country murder ballad ("L.A. County"), among other things.
no one compares to Lyle.......2007-01-04
a gentleman rancher, singer writer, - he's not to be missed!
AMAZING VARIETY BUT ALL DONE WELL.......2006-12-05
Lovett manages to package a wide range of material under one heading as "Country Music." But you will find great jazz here too. But that's something that Bob Wills was also doing over 60 years ago too.
Though it's hard to compare apples to oranges, given the great time-span differences, I'd have to say that Lovett has managed to "out-Wills" Bob himself. :)
Hear my words with faith and passion........2006-11-02
To some people, Lyle Lovett is that guy with the funny hair who used to be married to Julia Roberts. But his fans know that he's a hell of a talented singer/songwriter. This was his second album. There were four singles released from the album. "Give Back My Heart" reached #13 on the Country chart, "She's No Lady" reached #17, "I Loved You Yesterday" reached #24 and "If I Had a Boat" reached #66. Lovett wrote all the songs on the album. Many of the songs are quite witty. Lovett is classified as a country artist, but several of the songs here have a jazzy feel to them. Good album.
Great Ride--Lyle Lovett's Pontiac.......2005-08-02
Classic Lovett. Creative, pensive, entertaining...Favoites on this CD include Don't Touch My Hat, Long Tall Texan (with Randy Newman), and That's Right, You're Not from Texas.

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band remains the big man's most ambitious album in many ways. A smart split is effected, and not only between styles--the horn-driven swing of the first half backs the record's wittiest, slyest songs, while the country-folk numbers are among Lovett's most pensive. He's not so mournful that he can't raise an eyebrow at heartache, though: try "I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You." --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
LOVETT IN TOP FORM WITH GREAT TEXAS SWING BAND.......2006-12-05
Lovett shows the wide scope of his musical talent. Equally at home doing Country Music or Jazz, in the tradition of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
It's not the words........2006-11-06
This was Lyle Lovett's third album. There were three singles released from the album; "I Married Her Because She Looks Like You", "Stand By Your Man" and "Nobody Knows Me". None of them were hits, even though they are of high quality. The album overall is good. It is, of course, a country album, but some of the songs are closer to jazz than country. Lovett's fans will dig it.
BUY THIS ALBUM!!!.......2006-10-10
This was the first Lovett album I purchased back in the early 90's...I love it....you NEVER tire of this album, and EVERY song is wonderfully done...my favorite is the earthy, soulful: "What do you do/the glory of love"...listen to the dialogue between the singers...so funny, yet so true. If you enjoy the "big band sound" with that horn section...buy this...you will NOT be disappointed.
Totally refreshing and a true original..........2006-04-20
I worked in country radio for a few years down in northern Florida about the time Lyle's first album was released. We jumped on every single that was released from that debut album because he was just so distinctive and original sounding. A few years later I was at a station in New England and the "Large Band" album came out. So different from the first couple of albums yet still unmistakably Lyle Lovett. This man has the ability to evoke memories from all walks of life as well as make you smile, laugh, think, want to get up and dance and more. After hearing this album, I don't think there's a style of music the man cannot do well. Another reviewer spoke of Mr. Lovett as having no measurable talent or good looks. On the contrary...Mr. Lovett's talents are immeasurable. There's some amazing stuff going on here both musically and lyrically, and if someone's basing their opinion of his talent on just ONE album, that's just not the whole story on him at all. Artists as talented and diverse as Lyle Lovett are criminally few and far between, and he's proven that with each and every release.
Lovett's Best.......2005-07-15
This, in my opinion, is Lyle Lovett's best album. It's the one I lend out when I introduce people to his music, and it's the one I'm the most anxious to get back so I can listen to it again. The album has a perfect mix of his styles. Don't like country? Listen to the first half. Not into blues? Listen to the second. The lyrics on this album are about as clever as they ever get, and the music is even more addictive. Also, this is the first album with Francine Reed as a featured soloist. Buy it and be careful who you let borrow it.

Less successful when it's sentimental (Waylon Jennings' "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys") than when it's wry (Willie Nelson's myth-puncturing "Me and Paul"), this cash-in compilation of previously released cuts was just in time to grab the first platinum record ever awarded a country album. It's not bad, but both Jennings' contemporaneous Dreaming My Dreams and Nelson's Red Headed Stranger are more nuanced tastes of the good-bad-but-not-evil-ol'-boy lifestyle. (Not to mention much of Tompall Glaser's own Outlaw compilation.) This 1996 CD reissue adds nine more tracks from the era as well as a new Jennings-and-Nelson version of Steve Earle's "Nowhere Road." --Rickey Wright

Wanted: The Outlaws.......2007-05-28
I think this reissue of the 70's classic is a perfect example of less being more. I am not certain if any of the new additions make this CD better than the first version. In fact, to be honest, I think the first version is a 5 star classic, while this reissue overall deserves a solid 4 stars. My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys is the best of the bunch here, while the cover of Suspicious Minds is outstanding. I always loved the two songs from Colter, and I think the addition of more from her lessens the overall impact of You Mean to Say and Looking for Blue Eyes. A great CD. The sound here is fantastic.
One of the Classics!.......2007-03-09
I have wore mine out. I need to buy a new copy.
Texas music.......2007-03-08
A real gem and the heart of the outlaw country music movement. The recent re-release with the songs added that didn't make the first album is a nice addition to any collection. Makes you wonder why they didn't include them the first time around. Who knows. If you thought it was great on vinyl you'll love it on cd, just a Fantastic album!
Original Was Better.......2007-02-28
In agreement with most of the reviews here, if you love the 70's country music so-called outlaw movement, you will love the music here, I have the original on a still working 8 track, I was very excited to get an
expandanded edition of this on disk, but to be honest, the longer edition looses something for me, I do "like" Jessi Colter, but as we all know, she does not carry this album, extra tracks included 3 Jessi solos in a row, then 2 Jessi duets with Waylon, that part of the Cd was a bit much for me, but besides that one pont, this is still a great set of tunes and an essential part of country music history to own.
Awesome!.......2007-02-24
I grew up listening to this album on 8-track with my dad. I love every song. Brings back the best memories.

Dylan Over Easy.......2007-07-05
For those who think you don't like Dylan, this one is worth a listen. The voice is almost velvety, the lyrics accessible, the songs melodious, and the musicianship superb. The most underrated of Dylan's albums, perhaps due to brevity or lack of "gravitas"
really good.......2007-04-10
This is the Bob Dylan album you play for people who don't believe the man is capable of writing good vocal melodies. This short album is FILLED with little songs that range from quiet and emotional to upbeat and friendly. All done in a country-rock style, too. Not a lyrical journey- a musical one. Worth buying.
Throw my troubles out the door.......2007-02-20
Is it really any wonder
The love that a stranger might receive.
You cast your spell and I went under,
I find it so difficult to leave.
A great reason to quit smoking lays within this CD...........2007-01-27
This should be an advertisement on why people should quit smoking. Dylan actually sings here, and he sings beautifully. His voice sounds so warm because he quit smoking during these sessions. As for the album, it's short, sweet, and charming, but it's not thought provoking or great Dylan. It passes the time very nicely. It's on the lower rungs of Dylan albums, but it's not awful or anything close to it. A slight, but charming work.
Nashville Skyline-A new sound for a young Bob Dylan.......2007-01-11
This album is one of Bob's most unique. Bob duets with Johnny Cash on North Country Woman, combining two of the most beautiful, eerie talented voices of all times. This album is very county based with very romantic lines in most of the tracks. Certainly one of his best. This album also focuses on the time that Dylan changes his voice to a little deeper, more country rooted mature Dylan. If you are a fan of Bob, I highly recommend this album. I fell in love the first night I put it on.

Amazon.com essential recording
It's no accident that among the great albums Jerry Jeff Walker has made, most of them have been recorded in front of a live audience. If you want to get the feel of the rowdy Texas music scene of the early to-mid-'70s, look no further than ¡Viva Terlingua!, a rowdy, goat-ropin' classic of sing-along mayhem recorded in the tiny town of Lukenbach in the summer of 1973. Walker marshals his Lost Gonzo Band through a number of tunes that went on to become classics, including Guy Clark's "Desperados Waiting for the Train," Ray Wiley Hubbard's anthemic "Up Against the Wall Redneck," and his own "Sangria Wine" and "Gettin' By." The highlight, though, is an extended take on Gary Nunn's "London Homesick Blues," better known to casual Jerry Jeff fans as the theme song for the long-running PBS show Austin City Limits. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
jerry jeff walker .......2007-06-19
think of austin texas in the 70's...cool longneck beer and tubing down the comal river...this album was popular than and now..classics such as up against the wall redneck mother are still fun...a must for third coast music lovers
One of My Favorite Albums of All Time..........2007-06-02
I don't even consider myself a country music fan, yet this album is in my top five favorites of all time, easily. You really can't categorize Jerry Jeff Walker as "country" anyway...
I think some call his brand of music "outlaw", "gonzo", etc. -- but whatever you want to call it, it is timeless.
Back in the early 70's, my parents used to have big parties, and they would put this album on -- and that was when the party really started. We kids would all be upstairs, listening to the songs and also to our parents getting rip-roaring drunk while shouting out "Up Against the Wall Red Neck Mother". Hearing those songs over and over, I knew all the words by the time I was about 7 years old!
After my dad died in 2002, I was going through his extraordinary album collection, and spotted this gem. I was so excited to find it, and took it quickly before my brother could get to it, LOL.
Other reviewers here have done a much better job at describing the songs, but I just wanted to add an "amen" to the chorus. I also wanted to confirm that you do NOT have to be a country music fan to love this music.
My husband (alternative rock fan) gave me a smirk and a "yeah right" when I told him it was not your ordinary country music. Needless to say (to JJW fans) he has changed his tune, and is now a big fan himself.
Nobody, and I do mean NObody, could play it like Jerry Jeff. Long live Terlingua!!
Still timely..........2007-05-07
My wife and I listened to Jerry Jeff (even drove once for 5 hours through a mid-western snowstorm to hear him in a small Chicago club!)when we were married over 30 years ago... then recently discovered at a college graduation crawfish boil at our daughter's home that many of her friends listen to him now. I decided that it was time to upgrade the LPs, which I still have, to CDs. Hearing these songs again in a pristine, clear state, without the bumps and scratches of the years brings back many memories. I'm on a campaign to encourage friends to do likewise so we can party again like we used to - now with our grown kids and thier friends!
Texas Music.......2007-03-20
OK. So, Jerry Jeff Walker isn't a native Texan. As the saying goes, he got here as soon as he could. With "Viva Terlinguia!" he stamped his Texas credentials for all time. It's rather odd that one of the signature anthems on this Texas Music masterpiece isn't a Jerry Jeff song at all! "London Homesick Blues" by Gary P. Nunn is reason enough to own the album. (I have the vinyl from back in the 1970s.) Jerry Jeff Walker burst into the music world in the late 1960s with "Mr. Bojangles," but that was before he came to Texas. This CD is Texas Music with "Sangria Wine" and "Little Bird" penned by Walker. And, he leans heavily on Texas songwriting legend Guy Clark's "Desperados Waiting for the Train" (another reason to own the CD) and Ray Wiley Hubbard's "Up Against the Wall Red Neck." Hubbard once said, don't record a song unless you're prepared to sing it at every gig. "Red Neck Mother" is one of those songs, and Jerry Jeff pulls it off so very well. "Viva Terlingua!" came out in the '70s country cross-over music surge, but this music--This Texas Music--has a life of its own transcending genres and decades.
It's Ok.......2007-03-18
Well, I need to listen to it somemore to get more familiar with it...

Tom T. Hall writes songs for children, he says, because they have a lot of the same interests, including the quest for simplicity. "One day I just found that we got along great. They understood me," he says. And in this compilation of songs from the '70s and '80s, Hall demonstrates his knowledge of the magic between children and animals and the thrill of taking a trip with the imagination, especially to Hall's own Fox Hollow farm, where such characters as Sneaky Snake, Randy Raccoon, and Ole Lonesome George, the basset hound, await. With the storytelling skills he gleaned as a child in the hills of Kentucky, Hall makes many of his songs into fables. "The Song of the One Legged Chicken," for example, teaches a valuable lesson about disability and difference. While other songs bring soothing comfort or merely raise a smile ("A mink wears a mink coat the whole year round"), and still others encourage play-acting, they all become treasures by the record's end. Packaged with a sing-along booklet. --Alanna Nash

I loved this when I was a kid.......2007-02-27
My mom bought a Tom T Hall album for me when I was about 7, and I listened to it all the time (I'm now 45). I looked for this music for a while and never found it when my kids were small, now I'll buy it for my grand niece and several of my friend's small children, and one for me. This is simple, good children's music. I only wish more kids would listen to this kind of stuff.
Holds up after years and constant play.......2007-02-09
I always thought Tom T Hall was my friend when I was growing up and I still feel like an eight year old when I hear Sneaky Snake. These days, anytime a friend or coworker has a child from 3 to 10 I try to use this CD as a gift. Once it won over a suspicious 5 year old whose mother I was dating. Even though she thought Fox Hollow was spooky, she would "woof" along in time.
Very cool album to share with your children or to offer as a gift for a friend's child.
As great as my memories.......2006-11-10
This record was a childhood favourite of mine. It had been a number of years since I last heard it but I always remembered it with great fondness. Now that I have listened anew, I know why I loved it as a child. I still love it as an adult. The messages contained in the songs are great lessons for kids but the music can span the generations with its appeal. I would definitely recommend this album for grown-ups and children alike.
"Mommy...I want 'snake snake'".......2006-07-12
That's what I hear almost every time we get in the car. And on a recent three hour car trip we had "Sneaky Snake" on our CD repeat. This is a really great CD and my daughter loves it more than any other. She can sing at least parts of almost all the songs. I saw Tom T. Hall in concert once, years ago, and I would have never dreamed that my daughter would fall in love with his music, too. Buy it!
Tom T. Hall songs for kids.......2006-02-24
These songs have stood the test of time - I bought the CD to replace the LP so the next generation could hear them. Easy on adult ears - think of the opposite sound to the Chipmunks & you've got the idea.

Fruitcakes is Jimmy Buffett's best recording in some time, for he has a better handle on the Caribbean flavors in his Gulf Coast beach-bum music than ever before. The Grateful Dead's "Uncle John's Band," for example, is completely recast as an easygoing calypso tune, thanks to Robert Greenidge's steel drums and Angel Quinones' congas. Even more radical is the tranformation of "Sunny Afternoon," the Kinks' satire of upper-class luxury which Buffett restates as a celebration of his own lifestyle. On the other hand, Buffett can be pretty insufferable when he waxes sentimental about his beach house, his childhood library and his daughter on the ballads "Lone Palm," "Love in the Library" and "Delaney Talks to Statues." --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Love the Delaney song.......2007-05-02
This was recommended to me by a friend. I love the song Delaney talks to statues...the innocence of children. What a nice reminder to stop and enjoy the moment! The balance of the CD is good, albeit, this is the one standout!
I love this CD!.......2007-01-04
I am a Jimmy Buffett fan for quite a few years now, but didn't own too many of his CD's. This is my 5th or so CD of his, and is quickly becoming my favorite. It has a great blend of all the sounds you expect from Jimmy: caribbean beat/feel songs, love songs, upbeat happy songs, and just pure Jimmy. Its a great driving or doing housework song, or even a workout CD. Most songs have a lively beat. I love it.
Not That Great.......2006-11-13
Buffett took 5 years off between studio albums, which for him is an eternity. In that five year span something strange happened. Although Buffett had still been a decent concert draw throughout the 80's, sales of his albums had once again slipped off the radar screen. Between "Lizard" and "Fruitcakes" Buffett had focused more on writing (books) and expanding his chain of Margaretville restaurants / clubs. The strange part is that in the 5 years that he took in between albums instead of his fan base slipping away; it did the opposite and actually grew by leaps and bounds. "Fruitcakes" would be the first Jimmy Buffett album to reach "gold" status in many years all without the benefit of any radio or video airplay. Instead of selling out in a few days, his concerts starting selling out in 5 minutes. Jimmy Buffett became a ticket scalper's dream as the demand for seats to his shows became a phenomenon. The "Fruitcakes" album and tour would prove to be a huge comeback for Buffett, but it has never been clear to me why it happened. The "Fruitcakes" album is a decent enough effort, with some good songs on it, but it is not as good as several of the albums that he put out in the 80's in my opinion. On several spots on the album Buffett talks......and talks....and talks. In concert, he is a storyteller and his rants work well in that context, but on a studio album it just comes across as corny. This is especially true of the title track "Fruitcakes" where Buffett drones on and on about movies, junior mints among other topics. The album has a few really great songs. The opener "Everybody's Got A Cousin In Miami" is a 7 minute plus romp. "Lone Palm" is a great little ballad. His cover of the Grateful Deadd's "Uncle John's Band" is a nice twist on the original. The title track "Fruitcakes" is pretty good too (without the rap). The rest of the album I find to be rather dull. I seem to be in the minority on this one as many Buffett fans rate this album as one of their favorites, but for my ears, although there are a few highlights, this is very average Buffett.
13 songs to go with a cool drink on a hot day.......2005-07-10
"Everybody's Got a Cousin in Miami" (written by Buffett and Michael Tschudin) opens with a little 'phone conversation' about Jimmy's cousin, who's the shady sort who operates out of a phone booth and can get anything for anybody. "Everybody's got a cousin in Miami/Everybody understands the impromptu/Dancing in the heat to the beat/That turns your clothing clammy/Everybody needs to have a dream come true..."
"Fruitcakes" (written by Buffett and Amy Lee) "Fruitcakes in the kitchen/Fruitcakes on the street/Struttin' naked through the crosswalk/in the middle of the week./Half-baked cookies in the oven/Half-baked people on the bus/There's a little bit of fruitcake left in every one of us..." Tied with "Vampires, Mummies, and the Holy Ghost" for my favourite on this album. Very conversational style delivering the lyrics on the subject of fruitcakes in this world.
"Lone Palm" (written by Buffett) "While out on the beach there are two empty chairs/that say more than the people who ever sit there/from under my lone palm I can look out on the day..."
"Six String Music" (written by Buffett and G.E. Smith) "You can get into Beethoven, you can groove on Jimmy Reed/But keep it simple stupid/All we really need/is six string music..."
"Uncle John's Band" (written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter) "Come hear Uncle John's band playing to the tide/Come on along or go alone/He's come to take his children home"
"Love in the Library" (written by Buffett and Mac McAnally) is of course a quiet song about falling in love with a girl he met in the library. :) "Love in the library, quiet and cool/Love in the library, there are no rules/Surrounded by stories surreal and sublime/I fell in love in the library once upon a time..."
"Quietly Making Noise" (written by Buffett and Michael Tschudin) Steel drums, brushes switching to snare after the opening, xylophone, not much guitar. "Not too soft not too loud/Just enough to draw a crowd/Quietly, quietly, quietly making noise..."
"Frenchman for the Night" (written by Buffett and Roger Guth) *Too* laid back for my taste, to the point of being almost suitable for Muzak. Acoustic guitar, very little piano, percussion toned down to using brushes. The total effect challenges my theory that percussion in modern music is mostly abused.
"Sunny Afternoon" (written by Ray Davies) "The tax man's taken all my dough/And left me in this stately home/Lazing on a sunny afternoon/And I can't even sail my yacht/He's taken everything I've got/All I've got's this sunny afternoon..." I can't help thinking he's about to sing "Desperation Samba" when I hear the opening of this song.
"Vampires, Mummies and the Holy Ghost" (written by Buffett, Roger Guth, Peter Mayer, Jim Mayer) leads off with an organ solo, though not *quite* a ripoff of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (aka the Mad Scientists' Anthem) before preceding to the topic of the singer's therapy. "Talk about denial and dysfunctional things/Head's like a bell some days, it dongs and it dings.../Spend lots of money but I'm tacklin' my fears.../Vampires, mummies, and the Holy Ghost/These are the things that terrify me the most/No alien, psychopath or MTV host scares me like vampires, mummies and the Holy Ghost."
"She's Got You" (written by Hank Cochran) "Only thing different/Only thing new/I've got your picture/She's got you". (Jimmy actually sings "she" on the first chorus but changes to "he" later on.) Peppy song for a the-hussy-ran-off genre. "He or she? Gender bender to me..."
"Delaney Talks to Statues" (written by Buffett, Mac McAnally, and Amy Lee) A father's song for his young daughter.
"Apocalypso" (written by Matt Betton) is notorious in my family because Jimmy played it on the Letterman show when the album first came out, only to be hustled offstage to make time for a little kid who could name all fifty states. Who, us? Fans? *Grr*. The steel drums naturally get a place in the sun in this one. "They say this universe is bound to blow/But I say we crank up the calypso control/Apocalyp, apocalyp, apocalypso/We'll be dancing when we go..."
Jimmy's Best CD of the 90's.......2005-03-23
I have many fond memories of the summer of '94. I met my wife that summer, I went on a road trip to New Orleans with my best friend, attended my third Buffett concert, and theres this CD which I consider Jimmy's best release in the 90's. It had been five years since his last studio release which was good but nowhere near as good as Fruitcakes. Jimmy just sounded renergized and fresh on this CD unlike most of his 80's releases after Coconut Telegraph. "Uncle John's Band" is a great cover of the Dead song. "Everybody's got a cousin", "Fruitcakes", "Lone Palm", "Queitly Making Noise", "Vampires","She's Got You", "Sunny Afternoon" are really good. There is not a throw away song on this entire CD. Everytime I throw this CD in the player I am transported back to that great summer. I can almost feel the gulf coast breeze as my best friend and I travel down I-10 to N'awlins and I feel like I did when my wife and I first started dating. I know this is getting a little corny but this CD is like the soundtrack to a great part of my life. Thanks for the memories Jimmy.

When he emerged in the mid-1980s at the dawn of new traditionalism, Lyle Lovett had more than a craggy visage to set him apart. His subtle wit, sly humor, and Texas-sized musical eclecticism made him a force. Built around 13 songs from his first three albums, this compendium resoundingly affirms those gifts. One hears his musical metamorphosis from the beginning, through the stomping blues of "Why I Don't Know," the honky-tonk talking blues "Give Back My Heart," and the folkier "L.A. County" and "If I Had a Boat." Nine numbers, including the Top 10 "Cowboy Man," appeared on singles (most as A-sides). The biggest oddities here are two newly recorded tracks, "The Truck Song" and "San Antonio Girl." They are Lovett's first new recordings in five years, and they share a nearly identical melody. Moreover, they really don't fit this context, though they may prompt hardcore fans to buy 13 songs they probably already own. Let's hope Lovett's working on an entire album where these two numbers will make more sense. --Rich Kienzle

... if you like Lyle, this is the only CD you'll need.......2006-08-25

the quality of this cd made me purchase two more of his work
Very Nice Compilation.......2006-02-28
Wow, what a great record. I too have most of Lyle's records. This is a very nice compilation. Of course, creating a collection of Lyle's work is very difficult and is bound to disappoint many: his records are so dense with brilliant music, it's very hard to pick among the tracks. This record includes many of my favorites, it's a very nice overview of early Lyle, and it shows why he is loved and famous. Couldn't get less than 5-stars for the music. Enjoy.
I haven't met anyone actually, who didn't appreciate Lyle's music. Hey, I like the Carter Family, Flatt and Scruggs, Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Bill Staines, Woody Guthrie, Doc Watson, Norman Blake. (And Queen, Lou Reed, Warren Zevon, Martin Sexton, Patty Griffin, The Gipsy Kings, Paco DeLucia, Pepe Romero, Glenn Gould, Pablo Casals, U2, John Hiatt, Hothouse Flowers, Bob Dylan (including the electric stuff), Pete Seeger, The Wailin' Jennys, Will Ackerman, The Who, The Eagles -- why the hell restrict your enjoyment of music?) That doesn't mean I don't enjoy Lyle very much too. Lyle's popular because his music and lyrics speak to very many people. That's pretty well the definition of success for a musician - making art that gets the message across. Nevermind the elitism purist BS.
I too share the worry that Lyle is in a slump. Hey Lyle, we are all anxiously awaiting that album of new material!
Lyle at his Best.......2005-09-09
I love Lyle Lovette and have several of his albums and this is by far my favorite as it is filled with classic Lyle songs. Simply put there is not a bad song on this disc and you will find yourself listening to it over and over again, in fact it is the disc I currently have playing in my truck. No matter if you are a life long Lyle fan or are interested in adding Lyle to your collection, you cannot go wrong with this disc.
Self proclaimed "cowboy man" creates amazing insomnia cure!.......2005-03-09
Ask yourself one thing: would real cowboys listen to this? Would "Tuco" or "Angel Eyes" from The Good The Bad and The Ugly listen to this? Or would they shoot the person who put on this pseudo-cowboy-pretentious-whining-grasping-desperate piece of musical feces? If you're a cowboy who drinks Starbucks and shops at Eddie Bauer, then ya, I guess this might be the cowboy man for you. If you like your "cowboy men" to sing with weak, unsure voices lyrics straight out of a 13 year old girl's diary, then ya, this might be your cowboy man. If you like cowboys who never sat their 98 pound frame on a pony, let alone an actual bull, then this is your man. In short, if you don't actually like country music, blues or folk, but got the idea that it was cool to listen to them, this might be your least painful solution. You can impress your friends and neighbors without venturing into the deep, scary waters of meaningful well-made music.
