About the Artist
Marc Gartman previous effort 'The Horrible Cocoanut Grove' was also offered here on amazon.com to critical acclaim. this time out he is joined by Gerald Menke from Mercury Rev and Babe the Blue Ox fame (and most recently seen working with Curtis Harvey, formerly of Rex) and with Antony Fine sitting in the keys working his way across the board proving himself to be a the finest interpreter of contemporary music since Plush. The lovely Sarah Howard joins in with her own brand of enchanting vocals on two songs.
Product Description
'City of Glass' can best be described as Americana. typecasting will inevetibly force it into the 'alt. country' 'folk' genres because of the prominence of pedal steel and occasional western harmonies. there is neil young influence, there is will oldham in there. the pedal steel hovers over the music like a warm blanket, piano interspersed like stars. this is music for being alone in the presense of others, music for the open road and broken headlights.

Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

This CD stayed in my truck's CD player for months before getting tired of it. Enough said.
Great game - great music.......2007-01-10
My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!
Hug your pillows girls.......2006-08-06
THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.
best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03
i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.
classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10
The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

Satyagraha remains, decades after its composition, one of Philip Glass's most traditional works. An emphasis on strings and on courtly, European-toned small choruses lends the opera a sense of musical familiarity rarely evidenced in the composer's extensive catalog. The libretto, though written in Sanskrit, is often mistakable, sonorously, for Italian. Satyagraha's relative independence from the internecine Indian raga-like patterns of the composer's other long-form work is particularly ironic given the opera's subject: Mahatma Ghandi, whose native country's ritual culture and spiritual heritage have long informed Glass's music. This is no dramatic biography; following a mythological gambit, the scenes focus on a handful of specific events in Ghandi's long life (the construction of a communal farm, his tumultuous arrival in Durban, the publication of the weekly broadside Indian Opinion). Pointedly, the opera is an international affair, each of its three acts referencing a major cultural figure: Leo Tolstoy, Rabindranath Tagore, and Martin Luther King Jr. The music is most interesting when Glass draws parallels between his patented, minimalist patterns and standard classical mode. --Marc Weidenbaum
Customer Reviews:
A servicable recording of Glass's great theater piece.......2007-04-15
Revivals of Staygraha have been rare over the past twenty years or so, but the Met has announced that it will bring the work to New York next season, transferring a magnificent 2007 production from the English National Opera. The reviews here at Amazon say misleading things one way and another, but in general the praise for this extremely minimalist work is deserved. On stage Satygraha is mesmerizing and profound, but it is also peculiar. First of all, nothing sung by the soloists or chorus pertains to Gandhi. The entire text comes from the Baghavad-Gita, and although the selections aren't extensive, Glass stretches them out, syllable by syllable, to great length. Chords are rudimentary, diatonic, and highyly repetitive. Melodies exist in a simple form and become transfixing by repetition more than intrinsic beauty (For example, Gandhi sings a simple scale passage at the end of Act 3 for ten minutes without alteration).
The events onstage are not directly related to the text but come from the earliest period in Gandhi's life when he was fighting against the so-called Black Acts that drastically restricted the personal freedom of Indians in South Africa. Only five or six events are indicated, and not all are momentous. In one instance, for example, an angry crowd was held at bay when the wife of the chief of police showed up while Gandhi was out for a walk and shielded him with her parasol. This symbolic show of sympahty dispersed the crowd. Presiding over each of the three acts is an inspiring spiritual figure: Tolstoy for the first act, the great Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore for the second, and Martin LUther King, Jr. for hte third. These figures neither sing nor speak.
Although called an opera, in performance Satyagraha comes off as a meditative, emotionally sobering theater piece, a ritualized happening that in the London production uses extensive special effects and stage devices. The brunt of the solo singing falls on Gandhi, sung by a baritone in London but here by a fairly taxed tenor from the NY City Opera. Minimalism is hard to sing in general: at one point the male chorus must sing one syllable (ah-ah-ah-ah) hundreds of times quickly, in unison, and without taking a breath. Although the performers here are up to the task, they seem strained, and in many ways the artificially bright overdubbing of the orchestra produces a false sound. In live performance Satyagraha is dominated by slow string lines and quick, chirping woodwinds. The sonority is basic but rich, not thin and squeaky as heard here.
So, as much as I was engrossed in the staged version in London, I am mildly disappointed by this CD set. I also wonder how a listener who doesn't have the advantage of visuals will respond to long stretches of what seems like sonic wallpaper. Leavig those questions aside, Satyagraha repays listening and is one of Glass's most convincing achievements.
in 3rd place after Einstein and Akhnaten.......2005-03-12
My own personal entirely subjective ranking, if there must be such an abominable thing, places "Einstein on the Beach" as Glass's #1 opera, "Akhnaten" as #2, and "Satyagraha" as #3.
(I've never gotten much into any of his many subsequent operas; I have tried here and there, but they do not appeal to me yet; perhaps they will begin to reach me after a few more years).
That being said, Satyagraha is very very good. The music is an expansion into orchestral space, of his earlier trademark idioms. The singing is wonderful. The libretto is wonderful too.
I think it marks a turning point or watershed, because it was his first step towards turning away from being totally experimental and "new"; it was his first excursion (totally different than "Einstein") into large-scale use of the traditional opera technology, e.g. orchestra and trained operatic singers.
I think he then perfected this use, of the traditional opera orchestra and operatic singers, in "Akhnaten"; but "Satyagraha" is still very very good as I said.
A Requiem for the Lost.......2004-05-22
I'm a hard-core Philip Glass fan and, unlike others, I don't prefer either his early minimal style or his newer orchestral style. I simply love the man's music.
I invested fifty dollars on this 3-disc set back in March 2003; it was one of the first recordings I bought. I listened to it one tense night in March. I had the news on mute, watching live videos of a somber, deserted city.
I put this opera on and listened with anticipation as the music dulled my senses. I was struck with the most beautiful music I have ever heard. The libretto, written in Sanskrit, is simply breathtaking. By the middle of the second song, I had fallen asleep.
When I woke up, we were at war.
The music was still playing, now on the third act which is dark and brooding, I watched as Baghdad burned. The music anticipated then the terrible things I knew would follow.
A year and 800 lives later, we are still at war, and I offer this piece every time I listen to it to that memory, saying a prayer for the innocents that died as a result of a false, unjustified war.
Unjustly ignored illustratioin of Glass's capabilities.......2002-09-24
As part of a trilogy of 'portrait operas,' Glass tells us in the liner notes that each opera deliberately has a different flavor. "Einstein on the Beach" had an electronic, mathematical and tense feel. "Akhnaten," a floating yet grand orchestral quality and this, "Satyagraha," then, is somewhere in between with a very sparsely orchestrated, contemplative design. So sparse and light is the music here, that much of the opera utilizes one section of the orchestra at a time playing unison harmonies. Was this deliberate, or did Glass simply not feel comfortable writing for orchestra after writing for the Glass ensemble? Well, that's debateable but for my money, I think "Satyagraha's" terseness deliberate and spectacular.
So why do I say this opera is 'unjustly ignored'? Well, there are two types of Glass fans. First, the hard minimalists who like most of the Glass ensemble's electronic works, like Einstein and Music for Twelve Parts. Then, there are the newer Glass fans, who like his more traditional, orchestral works, like the Low Symphony and his film scores. The problem is that "Satyagraha" is the pivot between the two and has alienated both fans. It is very close to Glass's earlier style in it's insistent repititon with slight variations that the will bore the orchestral fans but the Glass ensemble fans will feel cheated by the warm orchestral touch. So this great opera has fallen through the cracks by defying categorization in the Glass repitoire.
To confess my bias, I am much more a fan of Glass's old style (Yes, I've listened to Einstein straight through!). This opera, though, has one thing that neither of the other two (or, god help us, his chamber opera) have is a certain purity. Here, Glass is a orchestra novice and as such, is very conservative, keeping many techniques of the Glass ensemble and adding to them the warmth of violins, strings and operatic vocal (no percussion.) In the later acts, we do hear foreshadowing of his emerging orchestral future, but it is much more authentic than Akhnaten. I stronly reccomend that Glass fans, of old and new, listen because there is much here for both to appreciate.
The last of the best by Glass........2001-11-01
This work is perhaps Glass' greatest achievement. It represents the last large-scale work he wrote before the decline (or withering) of his hard-edge minimalist period (this decline starting with Ahknaten). The recording is exciting both in terms of it's production sound and concept. The singers are of good quality -- at least in terms of those who sing Glass. I would highly recommend this recording as well as _La Belle et la Bete_ for those who are looking for an extension of Einstein.

Bob Graettinger: A World Of Its Own.......2003-01-20
Bob Graettinger's music has never ceased fascinating me. Words can't describe Graettinger's universe. Only a man of Kenton's stature could conduct such a phenomenal work.
Got Kenton?.......2001-12-22
I had the privilage of meeting Mr. Kenton back in 1979 when he was on tour. What a band! Man, what a sensational band, and what a performance! Still, unequaled to this day. Since then, I've come to the conclusion about Kenton's albums and CDs, and it goes like this - one can't have enough of them, as there has never been anything like his interpretation, his arranging, and his leadership of the big band. What a vision. Nothing like Kenton. This is another great Kenton album, and I'm not just saying that because my mom named me after him. Tim Kenton Grimes
A true gem of American culture.......2001-07-26
I can't help amazement at the neglect of The City of Glass and This Modern World. Where Gershwin was blending (admittedly pretty) tunes from jazz and the classical musical styles of the '20s and becoming popular, Kenton did exactly the same with the classical styles of the '50s via composers such as Graettinger. Unfortunately, the serially inspired compositional techniques of the '50s did not produce tunes that are easy to whistle or swoon over after a glass or two of wine. However, these works are highly developed. One doesn't have to go far into any of the movements to realise how much has been done with the thematic material at hand.
About 'classical' musical styles of the fifties, I'd given up on Webern and Schoenberg and the few who followed that route, but surrendered to Kenton/Graettinger/Russo (et al) with ease. The works have a vibrance, a life, a turbulence and dissonance that so reflected the fifties as a cultural epoch, especially in the States which became the seat of artistic innovation at that time.
I have never ceased to be amazed at how Kenton managed to create these works at all. Admittedly, he had true virtuosi like Maynard Ferguson and Johnny Graas (and many others), but the act of keeping the expanded innovations orchestra in control must have given him a real headache. But he did it. And I still sit there spellbound as I did on my first hearing (via 10-inch LPs). These works aren't for the faint-hearted. But they are for anyone who wants to experience the limits to which Kenton pushed music. They will probably appeal more to "classical" enthusiasts focused on 50s/60s Americana than jazz afficionados. It's almost an afterthought to add that Capitol's engineers have made gorgeous transfers of these recordings.
Kenton Pushing the Limits of Jazz.......2000-06-09
This is an important and neglected album of Bob Graettinger tunes and arrangements by the greatest big band of all time. Weird? Yes, but incredibley rewarding. Stan Kenton was always on the forefront of jazz, discovering future stars, challenging the status quo and experimenting musically in a style of jazz that has traditionally been rather conservative. No one else would have paid any attention to Graettinger, especially in the 1940's and 1950's, but Kenton, to his credit, gave him a chance and the music he left us is inspirational.
City Of Glass.......1999-12-18
Owww. Everytime I listen to that music, my brain gets short-circuited. I don't know what Graettinger was thinking, but boy, was he in outer space.
I used to try and play this for guests at my place, but they usually got this pained expression on their faces and then asked me to change it to something else, or just shut off the stereo.
I'm sure Stan Kenton was very proud of this album, but I really didn't understand it. Graettinger may have a been a musical genious and ahead of his time, but it wasn't meant for any time period during this century.

Philip Glass CD.......2007-04-05
The service I received on this order was excellent. I was stunned at how quickly the package arrived.
The CD itself I don't much care for. That having been said, please understand I am not a big fan of New Age music. I bought the CD because a drum and bugle corps called Phantom Regiment is performing material from it in their field show this summer. I am very curious to see what the staff gleaned from this.
Great fun!.......2007-03-19
This is incidental music to a play, so it's all wordless [the voice of Linda Ronstadt being used as an instrument] and contained. It's Glass' take on a classic sci-fi score...his version of the original Star Trek theme. [that's why the electric keyboard sound...which is not "cheesy" but essential to the scale and mood of the piece] Sometimes dreamy, sometime frantic, it is full of invention and mood.
Great for driving!!
Know before you buy!.......2005-08-04
This is not typical Glass music, I do not believe. The emphasis of the opera as well as the music is to create an impression of the incredible and amazing, not so much to create a landscape and gaze at it, as Philip Glass music often does.
For someone who is new to Philip Glass' older works, this may be a gentle introduction. For more seasoned fans who do not know about the opera, you may want to do your homework first.
Did not like it.......2005-03-12
As a huge fan of early Philip Glass, I was anticipating wonderful things when I bought this album.
It disappointed me greatly, though. The organic tone of the Farfisa organs was gone, replaced by a very cheesy plastic dull sounding FM synthesis keyboard sound.
And the compositions seemed to be rehashes of the earlier Glass idioms.
I ended up getting rid of this album, after trying a few more times to get into it.
And that's pretty sad (compare to my favorite Glass albums -- including "Music in 12 Parts", "Einstein on the Beach", "North Star", "Akhnaten", "Satyagraha", "Dance Pieces", "The Photographer")
1000 Airplanes: A Spacy Opera.......2003-11-23
I wasn't sure what to think of this album after listening to it a couple of times. I found myself enamored with Track 10, however, a very fast, powerful, maddening tune, and felt the need to go back and re-evaluate the entire album. I found that the album is quick, very thematic, thought-provoking. In fact, I didn't know anything about the theme of the album, but as I listened, I felt I was on the brink of insanity. As it happens, a friend of mine mentioned that the opera is just that--about someone who is a bit whacked. This album is a top five of mine. It's a bit spacy, edgy, crazy. Linda Ronstadt's out-of-this-world vocals are awesome. If you like Philip Glass, you'll love this album!

A Great Intro to American Classical Music - Almost a Short Course!.......2005-07-12
Many reasonably sophisticated American and European musiclovers still think there are really no American classical music composers of note other than perhaps Gershwin and Copland. It is to the credit of the Naxos label, via their 'American Classics' series, that the lie is put to that notion. Each month there are new issues from Naxos containing music by American composers. And it was a brilliant idea for them to take selections from their dozens of releases of this music to put together this sampler of such music to illustrate a 100+ page essay on the subject by an eminent writer on music, Barrymore Laurence Scherer. The combination of 2 CDs of music tracks, Scherer's essay, a chronological outline, suggestions for further listening, even a map showing where various composers were born helps the 'student' learn much about our nation's musical heritage.
There are selections by twenty-eight composers stretching from the amazing Wagnerian 'Macbeth' Overture by William Henry Fry (1813-1864) to the very recent 'Rapture,' a percussion concerto by Michael Torke (b. 1961). Some selections are complete movements, others are shorter passages from larger works. Included are such gems as the first movement of Arthur Foote's Piano Quartet, the third movement of Henry Hadley's Fourth Symphony, Charles Ives's 'The Unanswered Question,' 'King Cotton' by John Philip Sousa, 'Maple Leaf Rag' by Scott Joplin, a passage (the exciting Spanish Waltz) from Walter Piston's 'The Incredible Flutist,' the finale of Copland's 'Billy the Kid,' the opening of Samuel Barber's luminous 'Knoxville - Summer of 1915,' 'Tonight' from Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' the opening of George Rochberg's masterful Violin Concerto, and John Adams's incredibly popular 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine.' Plus selections by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edward MacDowell, George Whitefield Chadwick, Amy Beach, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Charles Wakefield Cadman, George Gershwin, George Antheil, Zez Confrey, William Schuman, John Cage, Gunther Schuller, Alan Hovhaness, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass. The performances are more than acceptable and in some instances ('Knoxville,' Rochberg's Violin Concerto) definitive.
I would heartily recommend this set (especially at its superbudget price) to anyone wanting to know more about the history of American classical music -- Scherer is a master of cogent, clear prose -- and wishing to hear examples of the broad range it has taken over the past couple of centuries. I can easily imagine this set being used in a music appreciation course. And I am sure it will spark interest in the newcomer to this branch of classical music.

Customer Reviews:
Great Appetizers but Patchy Sound Quality!.......2006-05-21
Philip Glass' music is probably very unlike what you are used to hearing if you are new to his style. For me when I first heard this album, it was like an assault on the senses and my first reaction was to cringe and I wanted to throw it out after just a few minutes. But then as I decided to give the album another chance - after all, I had spent quite a bit of cash on this 3-disc album - I realised that the music definitely grows on you.
It dawned upon me after a few listens that some of the material here is really very beautiful indeed. The tracks are also chosen by Philip himself as is explained in the liner notes that he penned as well. The tracks have been remastered too, except the problem is that the tracks are a combination of DDD and ADD mastering. As a result, the sound quality suffers from track to track, as all the "Einstein On the Beach" selections are ADD mastered while the rest are DDD and the difference is very noticeable: volume and sound quality levels dip considerably as the tracks change which is quite irritating.
Still, if you are interested in sampling Glass' work without having to buy the whole albums, this is probably the best place to start. I know that as a result of this appetizer, I am now interested in seeking out well remastered versions of "Solo Piano", "Einstein on the Beach" and "Glassworks." Music that defies description and is yet so addictive, let's hope they release a better remastered version of this and indeed the entire Glass catalog soon. I, for one, am waiting with baited breath...
An excellent best of collection.......2004-07-27
I have to say that I prefer Glass' earlier, small ensemble works because of their striking originality, both in composition and instrumentation. The pieces on this CD are for the most part examples of his later much more ambitious, yet timbrally conventional orchestral works. There are tantalizing bits of earlier work such as Dance No. 5 but in general too much weight has been put on the later, larger operas and there isn't enough of his earlier ensemble work. However, the music contained herein is universally excellent and serves as a good sampler for those who don't want to buy all of Akhnaten, Satyagraha and Einstein on the Beach and who want a good, if flawed, overview of Phillip Glass' career.
That said, Glassworks is still a very good "best of" package and well worth having for the more frugal or casual Phillip Glass fan or for those unfamiliar with his work. If you can only own one Phillip Glass album this would be the one to get. I'm going to give it 5 stars just because of its beauty.
A Fine Collection.......2002-01-17
I was so relieved when this 3-disc set was released, because, while I like Glass's music generally, complete operas are out of my already overextended budget. At last I could hear highlights from the operas and other Glassworks without breaking the bank.
I don't fully understand the arrangement of pieces on the discs, which mixes and matches works indiscriminately (it seems), and the two songs from the "Liquid Days" disc are recorded at a much higher volume level from the rest of the material, so I frequently program them out to avoid the annoyance. But all in all, I'm glad I got "Glass Masters".
A great selection of Glass' Music.......2000-11-05
As anyone who has listened to Glass before knows, his music is not the easiest to listen to, but it is also wonderful once you get used to it. This is probably the best selection that you will get from his compositions without having to buy each of the operas separately. If you enjoy Philip Glass (but don't want to spend hundreds on the full operas) or are just interested in hearing his music, this is definitely the place to start. An incredible compilation!
