With Three Chords and the Truth, her 1997 debut album, Missouri-born Sara Evans not only wowed listeners with her superb vocal chops, but also boldly and unpretentiously staked claim to a neo-traditionalist style that suggested she'd done a lot of listening to Loretta Lynn and the late Tammy Wynette in her younger days. With Born to Fly, her third album, Evans continues her descent from the neo-traditional high ground and her move uptown. She makes it clear she's also listened quite a bit to the likes of Trisha Yearwood and Bruce Hornsby, whose "Every Little Kiss" she ably covers here. On the exuberant title tune and on fine country-pop ballads like "I Could Not Ask for More" and the lovely "Saints and Angels," Evans proves she can just as sweetly and deftly patrol the uptown territory as she can the down-home highlands, which she revisits on the steel guitar-adorned weeper "I Learned That from You." Though not every song on Born to Fly insinuates its way into listeners' imaginations like the above-mentioned gems do, this solid, ambitious 11-song collection stands as another feather in this gifted young singer's colorful musical cap. --Bob Allen

Customer Reviews:
Just too slow.......2007-07-02
This is Sara's weakest album, at least for me. Nothing wrong with her voice or the content of the songs. It's just that the album contains way too many songs that are too slow and too long [which aggravates the slowness]. This may not be a problem if you are a patient listener who is OK with listening to music just for the sound of the singer's voice. If you're more impatient and like a beat and tempo [like I do] then this album comes off as lugubrious and you will find yourself reaching for the Skip button. Some songs:
Born to Fly - good tune, got big video play
Saints and Angels - slow ballad
Could Not Ask for More - ditto
I Keep Looking - has funny lyrics about a girl with a "grass is always greener" issue.
Learned that from You - slow, the singer learned disappointment from her man
Let's Dance - one of the few livlier tunes on here, good
Four Thirty - has a good beat
Every Little Kiss - Sara does a very good cover of this tune
Looking at What I've Written, the 3 stars might be kind of harsh. The tunes that are "normal" speed are quite good. It's just that the slowness of the rest of the numbers weighs the whole down. 3.5 stars is most accurate.
Sara was "Born to Fly"..........2007-04-26
This is a wonderful album from Sara. While it is much more pop-country than her previous ones, it still retains that Sara sound. It was a huge hit for Sara spawning four hits for her, and thrusting her into the spotlight. It has many great songs on it, there are no fillers that's for sure. On "Born to Fly" She sings about knowing she was destined for great things, and on "Saints and Angels" Sara reflects on a relationship that makes two people whole. On "I keep Lookin'", a song every woman will relate to, Sara sings about wanting more in life, whether it's your hair or your love life!
A must-have for any Sara fans.

Flying High Still.......2007-03-17
Born To Fly deservedly put Sara Evans on the map nationally, a portent of things to come. I appreciate her first two albums, having more traditional songs along with hints of future success. Sara has a knack for bridging traditional country with more contemporary pop/country without sounding cheesy like some newer artists. This CD sounds fresh. In searching for adjectives to describe Born To Fly's sound, I've come up with sweet and beautiful for the ballads, and joyous, without being flashy, for the more uptempo tunes. Her music achieves a delicate balance. This album has been criticized by traditional purists as too pop, but its commerciality does not detract from her excellent voice or these amazing songs. This review will not describe each song, as many other reviewers have so outstandingly done.
If you are reading this thinking about buying this CD, do not pay attention to vulgar remarks about Sara's personal life or even exaltations of how beautiful she is (although true), you need to get this because the music is fantastic. It is stirring and uplifting, palpably infused with Sara's beauty.
If you already own other Sara CDs, you will not regret buying this one. It has brought me much joy since I bought it six or so years ago. I've listened to it more than any other Sara CD; I listen to "I Could Not Ask For More" almost every day. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Disappointing country.......2006-07-25
This is a very disappointing album for a country lover. I can't understand how someone who sings Suds in the Bucket (from Restless) can come out with such a crass pop album good for 14 year olds. The only good song is I learnt that from you. Too bad...
Not Sara's best..........2006-03-28
Well, as I said in my review for No Place That Far, I had Sara's two latest albums and decided to get her first three. No Place That Far was excellent, but this one pales in comparison. Although the songs are decent at the very least, I just don't feel these are Sara's best. As Simon Cowell would say "a very average performance." Don't get me wrong. If you like Sara even just a little bit, I still recommend getting this cd. It's just not as good as some of her others. Now, with that said, I must add that I've only given it one listen through on my way to work this morning and I hadn't had my coffee yet :) So maybe some tracks will grow on me.
So far, here are my ratings for each song on a scale of one to ten:
1. Born To Fly - It seems that any song about flying is a good one. Must be a secret amongst songwriters :). Great, solid beginning. 9/10
2. Saints & Angels - Not a very memorable song. Just ok. 6/10
3. I Could Not Ask For More - It's hard to go wrong with a Diane Warren song. I knew the Edwin McCain version first. This was a good choice for Sara, it fits her well. But I think I still like the Edwin version better. 8/10
4. I Keep Looking - I forgot that I knew this song! I didn't recognize it by the title. Definitely the best song on the album. 10/10
5. I Learned That From You - Great lyrics in this one. Nice ballad. 8/10
6. Let's Dance - Mediocre song. Didn't do much for me. 5/10
7. Why Should I Care - A good "Don't know what you got til it's gone" song. 7/10
8. Four-Thirty - Just an ok song. Not bad, not great. 6/10
9. Show Me The Way To Your Heart - The weakest song on the album. Again, just ok. 5/10
10. You Don't - Another so-so song. 5.5/10
11. Every Little Kiss - A Bruce Hornsby track *yawn*. He bored me in the 80s. 5/10
So overall, this album had only a few real stand-out tracks. If you're knew to Sara's music I recommend you by either No Place That Far or Restless first.

Customer Reviews:
If you are looking for quiet jazz, Laverne delivers........2007-07-02
(4.5 stars) I love this CD for its quiet moodiness, and especially for Laverne Butler's careful attention to the lyrics. Though this is her first single, she has much experience as part of a group, heading a trio and starring with the Widespread Jazz Band for many years. Her willingness to share the spotlight shows here, as all of her accompanists have solos as terrific as her own on nearly every song. Butler is no Sarah Vaughan, nor should she be. Her voice is, instead, softer, lighter, and absolutely clear, a characteristic which makes it possible for her, with perfect diction, to sing at a quick pace on some songs ("Alright With Me," for example), playing with the timing and rhythm at the same time, and hitting every note, straight-on.
Singing many standards, most of them slow, she and her "team" create a very relaxing (and relaxed) sound for quiet moments. In "I Cover the Waterfront," she made me really listen to the lyrics, and the quiet piano accompaniment and the mournful tenor sax add to the mood of a woman looking for a lost love. "Sunday in New York," more upbeat and swingy, shows the lightness of her voice, enhanced by the sax of Joe Henderson, trumpet of Jon Faddis, and piano of arranger Mike Renzi. "Speak Low" adds a quiet acoustic guitar to the accompaniment, and "Alright with Me" begins almost a capella, then adds a bass, as Butler creates a mood and the group then loosens up and plays with melodic variations and timing.
Butler almost whispers on some tracks--"Isn't it a Pity" and the end of "Sunday in New York," for example--and her "Ballad Medley," with flawless bridges between the songs, is one of the great tracks for soft, relaxed jazz. A lovely CD made to showcase Butler's talent as a long-time creator of quiet moods, this is the perfect antidote to some of the screeching that sometimes passes for music. n Mary Whipple
Another Hidden Audiophile Gem.......2004-10-28
This is one of my favorite vocal jazz CDs. It is, subjectively, the best-recorded female voice recording I own - in terms of clarity and body. I have owned it for over 10 years, and yet each time I cue it up, Laverne delivers. And I smile. The essence of Laverne's beautiful voice is captured without making her sound like she stands fifteen feet tall! The selection (of mostly standards) is very well balanced between ballads and uptempo tunes. On all but the worst sound system, this CD will delight. On a good system, Laverne will entertain you.

Customer Reviews:
Flying high.......2001-03-27
Sara Evan's third outing starts to show the development of her not only as a singer but writer as well, helping to pen 6 out of the 11 (12 import) tracks. The CD has some great songs, and I'm happy to report that the highlights are those she co-wrote, the sensitive "Why Should I Care", the more uptempo title track, and "You Don't", a gem that deserves a listen. Bruce Hornsby's "Every Little Kiss" is a great final track, with Bruce sitting in, of course. While listening to this CD, I couldn't help feel that she is too restrained, having seen her live, I know her capabilities as a singer, to capture a room, excite you and keep you excited. I feel that this recording suffers from over-production, though Sara is listed as co-producer, so maybe thats the way she wants it. Nevertheless, you are missing something if you don't give her a listen, if not in person, this recording is the next best thing.

A song finally written just for me!.......2000-07-18
... or at least that is how I felt when I first heard the song. I am a pilot and feel as if I was born to fly. More the lighthearted soul than the technical flyer, this song touches my heart in so many ways. It truly says everything I feel now... "How do you get to heaven, and who has that much time? How do you keep your feet on the ground? When you know you were born to fly!" Even if I am lucky enough to find that special someone, this song will still be my anthem as everyday is precious, and time is not to be wasted saying we have plenty of it.

Customer Reviews:
A must have for any Sara Evans fan.......2004-03-17
Most anyone who is a true Sara Evans fan would have the "Born to Fly" album in their collection. I would suggest buying the import album even though it only has one extra song. The song "You" is truly worth it.
