Give Mike a Break!.......2007-07-09
Of course if you are a longtime fan you might now want this, as it is largely a reprise. (Thus the title: Greatest Hits.) I, as a fanatic, am looking forward to checking out some of the re-recorded songs and love "Far Behind." Obviously if you are looking for new material, this isn't the place to go! Come on, guys. It looks like a pretty competent greatest hits collection to me. If you want B-tracks, etc., buy the damn original albums like the rest of us! Mike--you are one of the greatest songwriters of our era, and I can't wait for the new album!
Only one disc?.......2007-07-02
Considering that I have been enamored with Social Distortion since I was eight years old, my review may be on the biased side, but the major quips I have with this collection are that A. It's only one disc: Granted not every Social Distortion song can be called a hit, they have more than 11 tracks to consider great. B. Not all the old songs are remastered: The two tracks I'm really talking about are 'Another State of Mind' and 'Prison Bound'. If you've been lucky enough to see or hear one of their latest shows, they start off 'Prison Bound' with a beautiful piano melody, which would have been fantastic to hear in a studio form, and 'Another State of Mind' with the new dynamic duo of Ness and Wickersham would have been something for the ages. I am pleased to hear the White Light, White Heat, White Trash songs redone, but they didn't require too much reworking because of the album's sheer perfection on its release eleven years ago.
So for those just getting into Social Distortion, or the people like me who will buy just about anything they do regardless of how it's reviewed, give this a try, but don't spend too much on it or expect monumental difference in songs. Hopefully it won't be another eight years before another album hits the shelves.
Worth a purchase even for the hardcore fans..........2007-07-01
When I first learned that Social Distortion would be releasing a "greatest hits" album, I wasn't too excited about it. Of course, I have all the albums already and I wasn't looking forward to the prospect of paying $14 to get the one new song in an album of repackaged hits. I was also a bit put off by the fact that this album would only contain 11 songs. That is pretty thin for a "greatest hits" album. Still, since I can't get enough of Social Distortion and I'm a shameless completist, I knew I'd end up forking over the cash.
Let's just say that I was surprised when I first listened to this CD. As has been speculated on by Social Distortion fans for some time now, all of the songs from the major label era albums (tracks 4-9) have been given a major facelift.
This is where things get interesting. As of now, the band has not officially commented on this situation and the liner notes are no help either. Some fans are convinced that these tracks are merely remastered. Others think that the original songs have been re-mixed. Still, more think that what's on this CD is demo versions of the Sony era classics. Others think that the songs have been completely re-recorded.
I can't say that I'm an expert on mastering, mixing, or recording, but all I needed to hear was the first 5 seconds of "I Was Wrong" to realize that these songs are basically totally different. To me, the vocals and guitars sound totally different on all of the songs.
Personally, I don't buy the notion that these songs have only been "remastered". I own many remastered albums. I re-bought some of Bad Religions re-mastered releases in 2004. All of those songs sounded nearly identical to their original releases. The only difference in those releases is that they ended up much louder and crisper on the remastered discs. This is not the case with this CD. These songs have been altered and altered alot.
I'm sure some purists will be put off by the fact that the band has done this under the name of a greatest hits cd. Myself, I don't mind it one bit. It was a welcome surprise and actually made it worth me buying this cd. If I want to listen to the originals, I can pop those cd's in any time. This is a nice change of pace.
The new versions of the classic songs are interesting. I really can't call them better or worse than the originals. They are just different. I like both the originals and what's on this cd. Like I said, this is just a nice change of pace. Also, Far Behind is a great song. Classic Social Distortion.
So, I will say that this "greatest hits" album was worth the money in the end. In a perfect world, I would have preferred them to have released a b-sides/unreleased tracks cd. Social Distortion has a huge catalog of rarities that they've never released. That would have been better for the hardcore fans like myself, but I'll take what I can get. Maybe someday I'll get what I'm looking for (Mike Ness if you happen to read this: hint, hint). In the end, this will tide me over until they get around to releasing another new album. I'll just keep crossing my fingers and hoping that doesn't take nearly a decade like the last one.
If you're a hardcore SxDx fan or a newbie just looking to get aquainted with some of Social Distortion's music, you won't be disappointed with this cd.
Re-recorded hits.......2007-06-28
Let me start off by saying Mike Ness (and whoever is in Social Distortion at any given moment) are an awesome band. Period. But, this 'greatest hits' cd is a disappointment. First off, all the Sony-era tracks are not included, instead we get re-recorded ones. Secondly, 11 songs? That's it? Plenty of room to add more hits (re-recorded or not). And thirdly, the liner notes are basically a cut and paste bio. No band credits, no production credits, nothing. Then to make matters worse, iTunes has a download of the old Chuck Berry song MAYBELLENE (which you have to buy the whole album on iTunes to get ) that would ahve easily fit on here. Kind of a shame.
Buy new song on iTunes and save money.......2007-06-28
I love Social Distortion but will not be wasting my money on this "Greatest Hits" collection. I think whoever came up with the albums track listing was unfamiliar with how many hits the band actually had. Maybe the band were more popular here in the Phoenix area (where they were a rock/alternative radio staple) then in other parts of the country. At minimum the track listing should have been doubled to be a greatest hits album. I was really looking forward to buying this cd and was greatly disappointed when I went to purchase it. I am sad to say that this is the first Social D album I won't be buying. Instead I will buy the 1 new single on iTunes and save my money until a real greatest hits collection or better yet a Social Distortion Anthology or Box Set is released.

The album that carries U2 into its 25th year--and likely the mixed blessings of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame--is one of its most frank and focused since the days of October and War. But its gestation was anything but simple, in part salvaged from '03 sessions the band deemed subpar. Enter Steve Lillywhite, the band's original producer and sometime collaborator in the decades since, who helped retool the track "Native Son" (originally an antigun screed) into the aggressive iPod anthem "Vertigo" and leaves his distinctive stamp on the muscular "All Because of You." Perhaps weary of ceaseless, fashion-driven reinvention in the wake of monumental success, U2 seem only too happy here to re-embrace their original sonic trademarks in service of more daring, pop-melodic hooks than they've collected in one place in decades. The Eno/Lanois produced "Love and Peace or Else" may shimmer with the duo's electro-production conceits, but it's Edge's lugubrious, postmodern John Lee Hooker guitar swagger that drives it. Elsewhere, Bono's trademark dramaturgy is spotlighted on "City of Blinding Lights," the unabashed romance of "A Man and a Woman," and the confessional "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own." It may come wrapped in a conundrum--is it nostalgic retrenchment or a sum of the band's endless musical catharsis?--It's also the album where, Fly and MacPhisto be damned, U2 boldly claims its arena titan mantle with apologies to no one. --Jerry McCulley

Losing their clarity, nothing you want to sing along with.......2007-06-29
I have been a fan of U2 for a long time. They are one of the great all time rock bands. But this album just does not do it for me. The sound is muddy. There are no clear, strong melodies. U2 made their name with stirring anthems, that combining idealism with clear, piercing music. Oh well, everybody has off days. This one is not a keeper.
U2-How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.......2007-06-18
Well, what can I say, it's U2. They really don't put out any crappy stuff. I like it.
Not so good........2007-03-15
A long-time U2 fan. I saw them when I was a student when they were playing the Hammersmith Odeon in London. There are only two good tracks on this album. "Vertigo" and "Sometimes you can`t make it on your own", although the second is beginning to sound like a repetitive theme. Vertigo is excellent, original sound and production, when I first heard it I loved it, not even knowing it was U2. Great energy. U2 should be embarassed about putting out such a mediocre album. Doesn`t anyone tell them, "hey.. that is not actually a good enough song to put out". I was in a band myself, sometimes a song was rubbish, and you just have to let it die. Not all babies are beautiful.
Very misleading.......2007-02-11
Doesn't actually tell you how to dismantle an atomic bomb. Very frustrating.
High Quality but no progression from A.T.Y.C.L.B.......2007-01-20
Firstly U2 are beyond legends and their success is almost undefinable. There has never been a band that have survvived this long and still been innovative. Sadly that innovation and newness that we associated with U2 is dying as they are a band artistically going backwards. Sure the diehards (and there's millions of them) will dispute this but i cant help get the impression thart Bono's politics and long periods away from the band is finally catching up with them as the end product seems rushed, forced, much too like A.T.Y.C.L.B. In other words a bit of a cookie cutter mail it in job. im not sure if there is much left in this band anaway. Maybe 2 albums at best. they have nothing to be ashamed of but maybe their time has come and they should go out on a high. The over-exposure of this band is what is killing it. people are getting tired of Bono's political speeches from the stage and even his voice is cracking at some of the gigs. Still U2 are the most heavily critiqued and criticized band in the world because they are still the best. Not by much any more but just about. Coldplay are right behind them and moving up fast and the british invasion #2 post punk movement is putting trememdous pressure on U2s relevancy. But like i said their crown will still have to be won and it could be a few years yet.

It's not a bright and sunny day in the land of Brazilian Girls anymore. That's the message one might take from "Jique," the opening track of this, their second album. In concert, they've performed "Jique" more playfully, but on Talk to La Bomb, a snarling bass-line and juggernaut drum riff drive this piece of post-industrial squall as singer Sabina Sciubba maintains her sophisticated cool against the electronic storm surge. There are no more cute songs with choruses that go "Pussy pussy pussy marijuana" like those that appeared on their first blast of joyful noise. This is a darker album full of Babel language, post-war rage, and techno-hysteria. "I always have an orgasm when the tanks are rolling, crashing through the borders," Sciubba declares on "Never Met a German." Brazilian Girls maintain the same kinetic thrust and hook-laden melodies as before, but they've turned up the rhythmic aggression and electronic squelch to 11. Attitudes that were bemused in "Lazy Lover" are now pissed off in "Sexy Asshole." Even when they start off sultry, like in "Rules of the Game," it turns into sardonic, synth-fuzzed anger. There is a stridency to some of the tracks, including the title piece, which starts out echoing Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" before launching into a militaristic rhythm and sloganeering chorus. Only "Nicotine" has that seductive, late-night rendezvous mood of their first album, and even that has a bit of the Residents' zombie groove happening. On Talk to La Bomb, Brazilian Girls move from seducers to provocateurs. --John Diliberto

Another "Must Have"!.......2007-07-03
A friend of mine ownes this album. I borrowed it and fell in love with it immediately! So much so that I didn't even consider copying it, I bought a full retail version!
There is nothing to dislike about La Bomb. Give it a listen then buy it! If the Brazilian Girls continue with albums like this one, they will be very successful!
Impressive.......2007-06-15
Had never heard of this group before, but got it as a recommendation from someone who had it recommended to him. Listen to the samples, if you like this style of music, get this and their other CD. Very well done.
Cool delivery........2007-03-08
This is the second album for the eclectic, multi-lingual New York band that, despite its name, is largely male and definitely not from Brazil.
The Brazilian Girls return with another mix of upbeat electronica, organic rock, jazz and world music. This is nonstop erotic dance music for jet setters, with the proudly Euro-trash Sabina Sciubba riding the grooves like an old, charismatic pro.
What separates these non-Brazilians from the pack is that they are old school musicians with real ability and they've gelled together as an unbreakably tight unit.
Sabina has a voice clarified and honed by years of singing jazz that enchants the listener without overwhelming bandmates Didi Gutman, Aaron Johnston, and Jesse Murphy. The band's melodic and rhythmic synergy makes their music at once danceable and memorable, and worked to great effect on their eponymous debut. Melody dominated "Brazilian Girls", but their live performances and their remix of Blossom Dearie's "Just One of Those Things" on the third Verve Remixed compilation showcased an underlying yet relentlessly driving beat.
"Talk to La Bomb" is more effective than "Brazilian Girls" was at bringing this melodic but powerful energy to a studio album, perhaps because the new album's mood is darker and sharper.
Languages roll off Sabina's tongue with the same sexy insouciance that genres spring from her bandmates' fingers.
On "Jique," she mashes up Spanish, French, German, and oh yeah, English.
This New York-based band of vagabonds makes multicultural, cosmopolitan, intellectual dance music: Ibiza meets punk, dub goes tango, trance gets smart. And with her tongue-in-chic costumes and cool delivery, Sciubba could be the 21st century's first superstar-style siren.
Just Listen!.......2007-02-23
I read some of the other reviews and thought it was kind of silly for people to try and analyze which BG album is better....what does it really matter? This is a great(band)and they create thoroughly terrific music. I happen to think that Talk To La Bomb is pretty fantastic, unlike anything else that is out there. Let's remember just how horrible and bad the music industry is right now and let's just enjoy talented musicians like BG that go unnoticed for the most part, except by critics and nobody listens to them anymore either!
damn good music!.......2007-02-08
actually got to see these guys live on new years eve, nyc, 2006.
"Talk To LaBOMB" is a great new album. smart, sexy, angry and totally different to their first offering "Brazilian Girls" which was still different, but soft round the edges and melodic with great words. this one is protest, it's hard, sometimes fast and rude but bloody entertaining!

Sue Foley Deborah Coleman Roxanne Potvin `time bomb' Ruf Records
Sue Foley and Deborah Coleman come to this recording with deep credentials in the blues rock world, but Roxanne Potvin is not a name that I am very familiar with, but more about her later.
Often this recording is pleasing and at times very hot, especially on the NRBQ'ish rocking opening instrumental title track- Foley's `Time Bomb' which definitely races in true pedal to the metal fashion and just roars and soars! Foley's `So Far' is a rip roaring affair with a rockabilly tinge that is one of the finer compositions I heard from Foley in a while, and offers top notch blazing guitar rev-ups as Foley really wails on this track! But I could have done without her corny `Show Me' which really does not fit well with the rest of this CD. Coleman covers James Brown's `Talking Loud' in a Grateful Dead'ish `Shakedown Street' funky mode, complete with wah-wah effects, sassy background vocals, and is one of several fun tunes on this hip recording. The Coleman authored `Motor City' also utilizes soulful background vocals, and allows Deborah to do what she does best on her driving guitar, and the band also kicks in mightily especially the thumping bass of Jim Anton, and the strong B3 work of Mark Lickteig.
Potvin's `Get Up' is probably her best contribution here, but all due respect to Potvin, this CD could have easily been a Sue Foley meets Deborah Coleman recording, and does not need the third-wheel singer/songwriter/guitarist, as it would have been neat to have a couple of Coleman/Foley collaborations, especially instrumentally.
The albums closing track- Billy Davis' `In the Basement' made famous by Etta James is a riotous hoot, and allows all three ladies to sing a verse or two, and this tune is outstanding selection to round out this very neat recording.
`time Bomb' works very well at least half of the time, which by today's standards makes this CD a very nice recording to own. I would be remiss to leave out the fine production work of Kevin Bowe (best known for his work with Robben Ford, John Mayall, Etta James, Tommy Castro, Jonny Lang, and others,) and to the executive producers Thomas Ruf & Sue Foley, bravo!

Social Distortion is back ! .......2007-04-11
Social Distortion brings to the table a feel of rock, rebellion and good times, but have a way of bringing it about in a deep and meaningful way in this record. Clearly the ability and depth of the band is revealed in "Sex, Love and Rock `n' Roll"; this is not just a record to "make a buck" and this is evidenced through their remaining faithful to their roots (the hard edged quality to the lyrics and songs), yet their ability to evolve in the songs.
"Reach for the Sky" seems to be the catchiest of the tunes. It has "radio play" written all over it, but the song is addictive, kind of one of those songs that just comes at you with its guitar riffs at the beginning and its memorable lyrics: "Reach for the sky `cause tomorrow may never come." The song is all about carpe diem: living for today and taking advantage of things while you still have a chance. Who cares if it is a little mainstream? This is a signature Social D song with a moral: the kind of song you want to turn up.
Other notable songs on the disc are "Nickel and Dimes", another upbeat song with the signature sound of Social Distortion and "I Wasn't Born to Follow", the lyrics seem to embody the Social D persona: "When I grow up, gonna be a star. Gonna sing my songs and play my guitar, I'm ready." One of the my favorites is the last track, "Angel's Wings", which is a bit in between hard and soft rock, but seems to evoke feelings of not being stuck in one mode in life, but living life trusting in fate: "Angel's wing won't you carry me home." Another great song is "Winners and Losers", a song that seems to be about the good and bad in life and people, and how everything has its place but keeps pushing on.
Over all, this is just a great rock CD, one that you won't get sick of like so much other stuff out there. This is one of those CDs that gets better with age and begins to grow on you. It becomes somewhat of a habit after awhile. So, when you take a road trip, or are just hanging out with friends, be sure to pop in this one and crank it up!
The Triumphant Return Of Social Distortion..........2007-03-30
"Sex Love & Rock n Roll" is the first studio album from Social Distortion in 8 years. Mike Ness had alot of material to work with when putting together this album. During the bands hiatus, Social Distortion lost guitar player Dennis Danell to a brain anuerism in 2000. Danell had been with the band from the beginning and, along with Ness, was the foundation that the band was built on.
Clearly, this album is a tribute to Dennis. Mike Ness has often said that he felt as though a piece of his youth died with Dennis. The resounding themes of this album is being a man, coping with loss, and dealing with love. These are subjects that are very easy to relate to.
For the most part, this album is classic social distortion. Anyone who saw them during their scattered shows during hiatus is probably very familiar with most of the songs on this album anyway as many of them had already become mainstays of their live set over the 5 years preceding this albums release. There are a few tracks, however, that are there basically just to fill up the album. Still, most of the songs are incredible. The highlights are...
-Reach For The Sky
-Highway 101
-Don't Take Me For Granted
-Footprints On My Ceiling
-Angel's Wings
Dont take this CD for GRANTED.......2007-01-10
I was Somewhere Between Heaven & Hell(Kuwait)when I bought the latest Social D cd. I must have played this CD over 100x during my deployment.
After 100 times, I still listen to Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll
at least once a week. Mike Ness proves that Social D only gets better with time.
Mike Ness needs to give it up!!!.......2006-10-03
I really liked Social D. at one time in my life until I recently seen them live a few weeks ago. I thought Mike Ness was nothing more than boring and down right ignorant. The rest of the band was good, but when the bands frontman can't do much, but say "this next song is about or is.". Give me a break. Mike Ness kept bashing people in Hollywood and politics. He seemed really immature and pointless. I think he really tried to be a tough guy that night. I seen Agnostic Front about a year ago and the frontman Roger Miret is straight up a tough guy just looking at him, but he didn't have to make a seen of himself. Actually he was really kewl with the crowd and appreiciated everyone unlike Mike Ness's fake a.. . Plain and simple Mike Ness is a fake, but maybe back in the day he wasn't until he became stuck on himself. Oh yeah, Roger Miret has more and even cooler tatts.
Oh no... can I like it? Is it too mainstream? Will I still be all undergroundy and cool?.......2006-09-09
I DON'T CARE, if this is them "selling out" or "going pop" or even "becoming the wallflowers" (who I have personally never heard). I DON'T CARE about any of that, because I like the music. That's right, I HEAR the songs and I LIKE them and I don't really THINK about whether or not I'll still be a bonafide Hardcore (pronounced Hard [pause] CORE) kid.
Oh, and they used organs on mommy's little monster, so get over it.

Respect.......2007-05-07
A must have for any real Social D and Mike Ness fan. It is a little different after being accustomed to Social Distortion albums, but listen to the music and don't focus on the genre. I'm a fan of many types of music, a huge fan of Johnny Cash, and I am always glad to see someone follow their heart instead of what is popular. "Under the Influences" is a testimony to those who came before us, so don't buy it expecting that Social D edge. Buy it because you want to hear some good classic songs sung by a legend.
REAL STUFF.......2005-12-20
It's pretty bad when it takes a punk rocker to make a great country album. But that's exactly what happened and thank god it did.
"Let the jukebox keep on playing" is one of th ebest country cover songs of all time.
Keep up the good work Mike.
this isn't regular social d.......2005-12-12
mike on his own rocks, but this has a huge "country" type feel to it, if you're not into johnny cash.. or willing to go beyond a punker boy sound.. this isn't for you. mike's voice still rocks, but the country feel might turn some fans off. for those that liked cheating at solitair this is a good bet. this would be a great addition/gift for anyone that likes country rock
Old school country with an edge.......2005-11-29
Mike Ness' Under the influences is just that, true influences for every style of music. When I bought this cd the second thing I did was buy all of the origional material and it all blew my mind. Every song made to honor the origional artist. Remaking the likes of Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, and the Clash is a hard task for anyone, a task that should not be taken litely. This cd brings more than just good music it brings an added repect for the songs of the past, the songs that helped make the music of today. Overall a good buy.
kickin country covered.......2005-11-24
Mike's done a great job of introducing some old school classics to a new generation of punks. Teaching them that not all country is bad. Forget the Garths & Shanias & give a listen to some true tales of hard luck & heartbreak. He's covered the man in black on a S.D. album so to hear this was a great boot in the ass. I also picked up another great CD of cover songs by Luke the drifter himself called Timeless, a tribute to Hank Williams that would fit in the player right along side this one.

K.t. Oslin - Greatest Hits: Songs from an Aging Sex Bomb.......2006-11-10
Her voice has great range and she has such control ! Her songs are from her soul..aging sex bomb or not ! We love her.
K.T Shines again.......2005-11-11
Just when you miss your favorite K.T. song, you get lucky with this great cd. All her great hits with a few new goodies to tie it all in. Her voice, as usual sounds great. I am a die hard K.T fan and any cd she sings.. well she had me at 80's ladies. She refreshes Hold me, Gives New Way home a new Twist ( more Pop, less country i like it lol)
A Collection From One of the Best..........2003-06-05
When I think back to 80's country and recollect the best 'artists' of the time, I think of Rosanne Cash, Earl Thomas Conley, Judds, Lyle Lovett, and K.T. Oslin. Each of these artists brought so much freshness to country music. I loved Oslin, which surprised me because I never thought I would love music by a middle-aged sex bomb, but she is so full of sass, creativity, and she has some very fun songs that are realistic and not over-blown. I love "Hold Me", which was a bold single to release to country radio (thankfully they loved it!), "Come Next Monday", "This Woman", and "Hey Bobby" are all songs that broke down barriers about how 'country women' should be and what 'country women' should sing about. My all-time favorite of hers is "80's Ladies", which seems weird since I'm a guy and at the time the song came out, I was only in my early 20's, but that song has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard and they are so honest to what women her age had been through in their lives. I especially love the ending of the song, which sounds like a nursery rhyme, but accounts what each of the 'girls from school' ended up doing with their lives. I will always remember K.T. being the best of the 80's; a strong and vibrant woman who wasn't afraid to break down the weaker sex stereotypes. If she had been my mother, I wouldn't have been embarrassed of her at all, I would have held my head high and said, "Yep, that's my mom!"
Required Listening.......2003-05-26
This is K.D. at her finest. This woman has always stood apart from the crowd of bowers and scrapers doing whatever the industry dictates to get a hit song. She's nervy, she's strong, she's independent, and she's ungodly sexy. Some of her songs send shivers cascading down my spine.
Don't miss out. This lady is one of the music industry's best examples of a reason for existing.
K.D. Darlin', Where Are You?.......2003-05-26
I am a diehard fan of K.T. Oslin. I have been hopelessly in love with her since the eighties when her megahit, Eighties Ladies, dominated the airwaves. I mentally worship at her feet and have erotic dreams about meeting her in person.
The title song of this album, "Live Close By, Visit Often", lyrically expresses my own take on relationships (and probably that of many others of us baby boomers as we ooze past middle age) and was the catalyst that spurred my purchase of this CD. I found this song to to be perky and aggressive, very much in keeping with K.D.'s style from the beginning til now. It definitely validated my purchase.
Unfortunately, it's by far the best song of a CD that serves mainly to emphasize that the ravages of age (facelifted photos on the cover not withstanding) are gonna gitcha if ya don't watch out--in more than just the looks department. K.D. puts forth a valiant effort to project her former power and vocally cynical interpretation, but succeeds only intermittently. When she fails, she's painfully reminiscent of a 60-year-old Nancy Sinatra attempting (and failing) to sing "These Boots Are Made For Walking" (shudder).
K.D.'s strength here lies in her up-tempo songs. She whips out "Live Close By", "Somebody's Leavin' Somebody", and "Mexico Road" with her traditional upbeat spirit and power. "Mean To Me", a big-band torch song rendition, is also rendered acceptably. Unfortunately, every slow song on the album (and there are too many) causes the listener (at least, this listener) to wince.
The album ends up with K.D.'s rendition of the Rosemary Clooney classic, "Come On-a My House", originally a provocatively sexy, seductively up-tempo tune. But here, incomprehensibly, it has been transformed into a slow, eerie, sound-effect-filled production worthy of theme music for a Twilight Zone episode. All the driving, demanding sexuality of the original is missing (yes (sob)... K.D. did a sexual song without sexuality).
Summing up by song:

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
If you liked this bunch's self-titled debut, you will certainly dig the dozen raunchy tunes that populate Time Bomb. Wiry, wild Joshua Todd--a classic blues-belting, tattoo-bearing frontman--possesses a gift for irony that, while not easily gleaned, does exist. Behind him, guitars grind away, while big production by John Travis (Monster Magnet, Sugar Ray) helps create a believable street-grit feel that recalls early Guns N' Roses. The Sex Pistols-like "Place in the Sun" is a winner, as is the full-tilt "Frontside" and the suitably nasty "Porno Star." There are even a couple decent ballads! At its hard core, Time Bomb is that rare breed--an in-your-face, aggressive rock album that shows off a wonderful (and too rare) punk rock sensibility. --Katherine Turman

Time Bomb.......2007-03-28
Time Bomb-Buckcherry *****
If you heard the debut album then you know what to expect. With their hard rocking California style and their punk leanings Buckcherry have once again released an album that will please even the hardest of rock credicts. This was the bands second album before their nearly eight years hiatious causing phenomonal frontman Joshua Todd to persue a solo project which while promising was nothing compared to the power of Buckcherry. Keith Neilson laid low over the next couple of years until Buckcherry reformed in 2005 with all new members except Neilson and Todd for the album 15 (also recomended).
Partys, durgs, alcohol, getting laid, and living the rock n' roll lifestyle are the main subjects of this album. From the start of the album with 'Frontside' you can tell the band means buisness. It's a killer song with high energy, and great way to start the album. Next is the semi-hit single 'Ridin' which is one of the bands best songs and a concert favorite. A great party song! 'Time Bomb' the title track is exactly that...a bomb waiting to blow. In your face from start to finish and some great guitar work from Keith and Yogi. It's easy to see why this is the title track. 'Porno Star' is about what else..."big 'blank, mother blank porno stars." Great bluesy guitar playing here and some great vocals from Todd. 'Place In The Sun' is very Sex Pistols esq. It is done well but the song could have been better. 'Helpless' is a great song, very emotion and personal. Once again Todds vocals are at the top of his game. 'Underneath' is alright I do think the album would be alright with out it but it does make for a nice addition. 'Slit My Wrists' is killer, without a doubt one of the best songs the band has ever composed. Very high energy and yet laid back at the same time. 'Whiskey In The Morning' is one of the better songs on the album. It has a great bridge in the middle where everything slows down and Todds vocals get real high. The guitar playing is probably the best on the album. 'You' is so good it hurts. A bitter sweet love song with out of this world good lyrics. This really shows that the boys are more then just dirty gritty rock and roll songs. 'Slamin' is just everything Buckcherry is. Thats the best thing to say about it and really the only thing you can say about it. It maybe the best song one the album, at least the second best. 'Fall' is a great song that was released as a single but did not chart very well and it is hard to explain why because it is a great song. 'Open My Eyes' is a bonus track on the album and it goes without saying that it is the best song here. Just Joshua Todd, a piano, his voice, and the best lyrics he has ever written in his life and really some of the greatest lyrics ever written. This man is a genius. On a personal note this song helped me to purpose to my wife. This song is amazing and a brilliant way to end the album.
Surprsingly this album flopped. The record company Dreamworks folded right after the release of the which left no money for videos or any promotion of any kind making the album vertually unknown with the exception of the 'Ridin' video. So they decided to go their sepperate ways and only Todd and Neilson have done anything since then.
Time Bomb is an album that I would recomend to anyone who loves rock n' roll. If you heard the debut, 15, or even Joshua Todds solo work "You Made Me" then you will surly love this album as well. I am just glad that the band is back togther making great music once again because Buckcherry is truly the best band to come along in the last fifteen years.
Vastly underrated band and album.......2007-03-21
The label needs to hurry up and get this album back into print, hopefully these guys are on the rise again. Timebomb is a solid sophomore effort for Buckcherry, I even prefer it to their first album. The highlights in my mind? Time Bomb and Porno Star both have great choruses, granted you don't buy the "clean" version I imagine. Slit My Wrists is great, and Whiskey in the Morning is just a good old fashioned rocker that I love about these guys. On the other hand, you can play Open My Eyes to get your girlfriend to shed a tear..lol.
Must-have. Absolutely must!.......2007-01-28
There's just something about this band, and especially this album... it's powerful. Amazon really needs a sound sample of "Slit My Wrists" - THE best song on here, with strangely beautiful and melodic parts placed inside a fast, upbeat tune (despite the dark title). The band is generally raunchy but some lyrics are surprisingly deep and unbelievably intense. I wish I had gotten into this band sooner - they're amazing, and just get better as they go!
Slamin' Rock 'N' Roll.......2006-02-13
If you love a band that has that great classic rock sound Buckcherry is the band for you. I got this cd the day it came out and I still listen to it to this day. If you ever get a chance to see them live you will understand what all the buzz is about.
Stand Out Tracks:
Ridin' (single)
Porno Star (single)
Whiskey In The Morning
Slamin'
They Tried.......2005-09-20
You gotta hand it to 'em, they tried to bring the talent and the attitude back to Rock n Roll, but sadly thanks to deaf ears and corporate radio, it didn't add up to sales. Time Bomb was a killer follow-up to their debut, but much to my dismay, the wayward, "impress me today because you're so yesterday" fans they made w/ their first cd abandoned them. This cd did not disappoint in any way, it was just a dropped ball by the record co. , radio, and "fans". The good reviews it received on this site say it all. The "GnR Lite" reviewers are the people who only liked Buckcherry for the 'caine reference in Lit Up. How sad. Their new stuff will probably be just as killer as the S/T and T.B cd's , but unfortunatly, the whole vibe of the rock scene is still the same.

My Top 1 Album.......2007-05-10
I first came across THE THE, when I picked up a cassette called "Soul Mining". Ever since then, Matt Johnson has been a lyrical and musical demi-god of dark, hypnotising and haunting sounds that I've grown to love over the past number of decades. Mind Bomb typifies this is every way. I recommend it to all. Go buy it now.
truly a mind bomb.......2007-03-05
i loved this cd it is deep and cutting edge provacative thought provoking and just controversial. i have always liked the the since they first came out in the eighties i just wished they would of come up with a valid name for their band because every time i looked for their albums back then i would ask the counter person to help me look for an album by the the and they would reply with the the what? great band stupid name. i have one complaint about this album and it is the use of a terrible racial slur in the song violence of truth was that neccessary? well despite that this is a great cd.
A replay of "Infected".......2007-02-22
I'm not sure why anyone thought it necessary to reissue this album, except that its themes of conflict between Islam and Christianity became more prescient after Islamic fundamentalist terrorists mass-murdered innocent people on September 11, 2001. For the most part, the album sounds like a replay of "Infected," which sounded much fresher than "Mind Bomb" when it was released two years before this album. Critics had panned "Infected" for sounding too self-absorbed, and "Mind Bomb" hardly improves upon such solipsism. Actually, both albums sound very dated, as if that "Manchester sound" from the late 1980s and early 1990s were put into a time capsule. I listen to the drum track from "Armageddon Days (Are Here Again)," and expect the chorus to repeat, "Face the face...got to face the face!" from Pete Townsend's "White City" (which was used in a TV ad). The silliness of the music undermines any warning of the coming apocalypise.
Perhaps the truest album title of all time!.......2006-09-04
This album came out 2 years before Desert Storm and more than a decade before the current situation in the same corner of the world. This was the summer before even the Berlin Wall collapsed and European Communism with it. Matt Johnson doesn't even touch that part of the world, choosing instead to focus on the Middle East.
I was casually familiar with The The before this, notably Heartland and This is the Day. I first heard this album about two months after it came out in mid-1989. The new CD a friend of friend picked up that afternoon and wanted to hear before we went out that night to the bars. The rest of that night, ignoring the blaring music all around, I racked my brains trying to sort out what I had just heard.
Periodically, an album comes out that screams "CLASSIC" or "MASTERPIECE" before the disc is even done spinning for the first time. This is one of those albums. As immediate as it is, it expands, deepens, and feels different with every listen. Musically it has aged exceptionally well. Lyrically, well, it is prophetic to say the least.
Matt Johnson has almost spelled out the near future, to a T, on the first three songs. His songwriting never came close to this before or after.
Criminally underrated, this album is deeply religious but venomously blasphemous. He loves God but would never trust any religion to do the right thing by mankind. His love songs are as poetic as classic English literature.
This album is in my top 10 list of the 80's. I even discovered, purely by accident, a great early computer animation video that I synced up with this album, ala DSOTM w/ Wizard of Oz. What?...oh, no, I'm sorry, I ain't tellin' you the name. My special treat. Tee Hee!
Thanks for reading. Do yourself a favor.........
Amazing........2006-06-03
I can't get over how amazing this album is. The music, the lyrics, Matt Johnson's voice, and Johnny Marr's guitar playing make me gasp, cry, shiver, just feel so many emotions all at once. Few artists have been able to do this. It's absolutely mind blowing (no pun intended). One of the songs, "Kingdom of Rain" also features Sinead O'Connor, who is a personal favorite of mine as well. Every song is a standout song. I'd rank "Armageddon Days Are Here Again" higher than the rest because it was clearly ahead of it's time, in an eerie way.
None of the reviewers here have rated this album anything below five stars. I'm not going to change that. It deserves all of the praise it's been given. BUY THIS ALBUM NOW. If you like intelligent quality music, you won't regret it.

Even if Social Distortion have lost some their edge on more recent studio releases, this new live set is solid proof that the band's musical urgency is still intact. Seventeen years of classic Orange County, California, punk is represented over 17 tracks, as the band moves through speaker-rattling alternative-radio hits like "Bad Luck," "Let It Be Me," and "Ball & Chain." Singer Mike Ness's rockabilly roar is in fine form, as is the grinding rock energy his bandmates put out. Recorded over three nights at Los Angeles's historic Roxy nightclub, the disc serves as a great testament to one of America's finest punk bands. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
The Next Best Thing To Being There..........2007-03-30
Social Distortion has always been known for its live show. This CD really is the next best thing to being there. Live albums usually are a very mixed bag; however, this one lives up to all of the expectations. The sound quality is amazing and the setlist is a nearly perfect selection of their live performances during that era (it should have included sick boy though). It is also notable because this is the last Social Distortion recording featuring Dennis Danell before his death.
The only thing that could have been done better on this album is that the tracks should have started at the beginning of the songs rather than beginning with Mike Ness's long speeches before each tune. Sometimes, it would be preferrable to just hear the songs without having to listen to or fast forward through Mike's views on the punk rock scene, the establishment, the "old days", or the government. Still, that really is the only complaint about this cd.
Great even for the casual Social D fan.......2007-01-05
I consider myself a casual fan of Social Distortion, and this disk is pretty good. The sound is good, and the energy is excellent. Even Mike Ness's cheesy commentaries between songs are worth listening to. I also bought this disk for musicians I know, because Social D, especially LIVE Social D, should be required listening for anyone performing music onstage.
Highlights, IMO, are Ball and Chain, Prison Bound, Ring of Fire, I Was Wrong. It's worth checking out whether you LOVE SD, are a casual fan, or never even heard their music before.
live.......2005-10-29
1 hour ago just saw Social Distortion Live in Atlanta. People yelled all the way through the concert. Whoops and yells spilling out on the street after the concert. "Live" is the best word for this band when you see them in concert. "Live" for both girls and guys. All seemed to linger after the concert. Total adrenalin. Why see the Rolling Stones live when you can see the real deal?
Some things are totally fresh after 20 years. How is that possible? 5 stars.
Transition album for Mike Ness.......2005-09-28
It's during Ball and Chain, more than Ring of Fire, where you can FEEL the Johnny Cash influence on Mike.
This a pretty important album to have and I spin this way more than any other SD's.
I always thought SD took awhile to find their identity, I wasn't a big fan of Mommy's Little Monster and prior (so I tend to skip some over some of those songs -I know that puts me in the minority) but once they did they didn't turn back (kinda like AFI).
Ball and Chain on this album will always rank as one of the greatest country/rock songs ever written and I know that's the direction Ness wants to continue in. I just hope he keeps uptempo guitar work because it's that constant balladry, well, and a few other things, that turns me off of most country. Check it out live - preferably with a bottle of JD. Really! You'll be feeling bittersweet once the crowd starts taken the 4th verse.
Best Band in the USA.......2005-05-25
You can forget about the debate over who the best band in America is. It begins and ends with these guys. Although not the same Social D of the 80's and 90's, in part due to aging, retirments (Johnny, we need you back on bass man!) and largely to the tragic loss of Dennis Danell, these guys simply put on the greatest show, every time. I just saw them live in Poughkeepise NY (for like the 30th time since 1992), and that show was as powerful and rocking as that first time I saw them at the Sting in New Britain, CT (and like a young dum-ass, offered Mike and Dennis a beer in the parking lot before the show).
Thank you Mr. Ness, for taking time from you family and touring. And for those of you who have never seen the band play, this album is as good as being there. "The kittens are out tonight!"
