4 out of 5 stars Plenty of covers but no big Four Tops hits.......2005-04-15

The first album, Yesterday's dreams, was released in 1968 and yielded two hits, both of which were minor hits in Britain and America, these being the title track and I'm in a different world. The album also includes covers of By the time I get to Phoenix (Glen Campbell), Sunny (Bobby Hebb), Never my love (Association), Daydream believer (Monkees) and A place in the sun (Stevie Wonder).

The second album, Soul spin, clearly didn't impress Motown as no singles were released in Britain or America, but it contains covers of Got to get you into my life (Beatles), This guy's in love with you, The look of love (two Bacharach-David classics), Light my fire (Doors), Honey (Bobby Goldsboro) and California dreaming (Mamas and Papas).

The original songs that weren't released as singles from the two albums are nothing special though they're OK. I doubt if any of them would have been big hits had they been so released. It may be that the proliferation of covers on these albums is a consequence of the dearth of good original material at the time.

The two albums that make up this set are not the most important in the career of the Four Tops but committed Motown fan who enjoy covers may wish to give them a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait... for Tops fans like me.......2001-11-26

It's been over 30 years since either of these albums have been commercially available, and although they don't feature any big hits, who can argue against the amazing voice of Levi Stubbs?

You'll find the Tops' usual bunch of MOR covers here ("This Guy's In Love With You," "The Look of Love," "The Sweetheart Tree"), which mean that gems like Smokey's "So Far" and "I'll Pay Double" (on the box set "Fourever") got left off. However, this disc is only place you can find the breathtaking, ultra-rare LP mix of "I'm In A Different World" that's worth the price alone.

It might be just me, but "Nothing" sounds even clearer here than it did on "Fourever."

Anyway, there's a lot of obscure Motown classics like "Can't Seem To Get You Out of My Mind," "We've Got A Strong love (On Our Side)," and "Remember When." There are also fine covers of "Light My Fire," "Never My Love," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," and "Sunny."

Most of Soul Spin is throwaway material; no singles were even released from it. However, Stubbs and the other Tops never falter vocally, and the material is something unusual. "Look Out Your Window" and "Lost in a Pool of Red" are two of the funkiest Motown tunes I've heard to date, while "Barbara's Boy" has a silly pop groove where, IMHO, a serious tone would have been better. I'm surprised that it wasn't "Four Tops Now!" as the other album, but personally, I love to collect the mega-rare.

I'm glad that all the greatness here is finally available after being overlooked for so long. "Yesterday's Dreams," in particular, is an awesome album. Now all we need is "Four Tops Live!/Four Tops On Broadway."

5 out of 5 stars Sleeping with Dan..........2003-01-12

A while ago I was given Dan Chadburn's CD, Solo Piano as a gift and had set it aside until recently. While I was down with the flu, I went looking for some soothing music to help me sleep. I found Mr. Chadburn's CD and thought it sounded like a perfect choice - and It was! It not only quickly ushered me into peaceful dreams but (having my player set on continuous play) was there to welcome me awake with inspiration, energy and HEALTH! I'm no Doctor, but I figured if sleeping with Dan Chadburn helped me get well, what would living with him do for me? Ok, I'm being silly here...but I really am a HUGE fan now! Playing his Solo Piano while I work, play, and LIVE has really been amazing -- his music speaks the perfect language of inspiration and peace to my soul. Please, don't take my word for it... Let your soul decide -- Enjoy!

A classical piano masterpiece... this is easily one of my favorite soothing cd's. I have the sheet music book as well, which is amazing... complex! I ordered Reflections from Dan and once I have it, I'll get that book too... Buy this album! --mark-- np: Dan Chadburn - Solo Piano

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2000-02-02

Dan Chadburn's debut recording is a soaring collection of thirteen wonderful compositions and improvisations. Some solo piano albums seem a bit empty and in need of accompaniment, but Dan clearly indicates why solo piano can be the most expressive of any musical medium. I've probably listened to this album at least twenty times, but each time, I've discovered something new, and the songs always seem as fresh as the first time I heard them. Dan's playing style reflects his classical background, as well as his love of improvisation, and his compositions are full of passion and emotion without being overblown or melodramatic.

The CD opens with "Beginnings", a sweetly uplifting piece full of hope and the joy of discovery. "Solitude" is spare and very atmospheric - I can picture someone playing this in a dark, empty room with only moonlight for illumination. My favorite song on the album is "Silence Once Served", an introspective piece of musical soul-searching. The melody is simple, but so heartfelt that it affects me every time. "Midnight Romance" is a gently swirling waltz - quiet but passionate. "Elegy" is my other favorite piece. As its title indicates, there is a feeling of loss and sadness, but there is also a feeling of celebration of someone's life. Gentle, yet very strong, there is an intensely personal feeling in this piece. "Home Again" lightens the mood, conveying warmth and a sense of relief at being back "home" - very contented!

Excellent from start to finish, I highly recommend this album!

A rare breed of singer/songwriter, Jack has the ability to combine the storytelling skill of Jimmy Buffett with the extraordinary melodies of Vince Gill. This CD, "I Should Have Left Yesterday", clearly demonstrates Jack's capacity as both a writer and an artist. From the pop-rock groove of "The House" to the traditional country sound of "My Memory Won't Forget", Jack weaves a musical thread that creates a blanket of music appealing to a wide variety of tastes. Throw in the Latin-rhythms of the title song "I Should Have Left Yesterday" with the sexy undertones of "Heatwave, Heatwave" and you have a virtual tapestry of story and song.

Almost unbelievably done, by the second time listening to this cd, these songs rang in my head. Now, I can name that tune in 3 notes, no matter which song I'm listening to! I really like listening to this cd, but do yourself a favor and when listening to track 12, get a bottle of wine and a box of kleenex, make sure the lights are low....

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone!.......2000-08-22

Todd has covered a lot of ground in this effort. His music has come straight from his heart, and he delivers each cut with a life of it's own. This is a great CD, with some top-flight personnel on it as well. The music, writing, production and graphics are second to none, and the styles are as varied as Missouri weather! There is definitely something for everyone on this CD!

            5 out of 5 stars Ear Candy!.......2000-08-16

Is it country? Adult easy listening? Folk? Todd Anthony's debut CD defies categorization and is what makes his music so appealing. Todd's rich earthy baritone puts the listener at ease--as if you're listening to an old friend. The harmonies are tight and well balanced, not overbearing or overused. His singer-songwriter abilities are evident in the meaningful and flowing lyrics. The music itself is held together by some very nice acoustic work and the occasional saxophone. On my second listening I found myself saying "I like that one the best" after each song. Treat yourself to a very pleasant listening experience!

            5 out of 5 stars Yesterday's Dreams.......2000-08-12

Todd Anthony is a newcomer to the recording scene, but his debut cd shows the heart, and skills, of a seasoned veteran. The cd is a varied mix of styles, and tempos. From the Spanish flavored "Vuelve Mi Amor", to the country rock "Things Here Are Different", to the haunting ballad "One Night In Reno", to the Moog driven rocker "Yesterday's Dreams",to the touching "Hey TJ". Todd has covered several different genres of mucic successfully. Mr.Anthony opens up his heart and soul, and invites the listener inside. Todd has a voice and style all his own, reminding you of several artists, but no one in particular. From the performances, to the production, to the packaging, "Yesterday's Dreams" is a well crafted piece of work, a nice addition to your cd collection. Do yourself a favor... get this cd.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Medley.......2001-10-13

ISLAND OF DREAMS serves a worldly-wise medley of delicious new and standard tunes that saunter and swing in a body of sophisticated rhythms, sing from the soul of the African diaspora, and think with the eloquence and polish of jazz.

McClerkin's renditions of "The Look of Love," and, especially, "In a Sentimental Mood," offer fresh takes--the former with its upbeat island rhythms and catchy new phrasing; the latter with lush chord changes that seem to chime the very lyrics of this ballad. And McClerkin's own instrumental works, especially "Slick 'N Slide" and "Cancel Me Out," reveal a talent for writing that should easily put his charts on bandstands everywhere.

Vocals aren't lacking here either: "Africa" and "Los Ninos" are loving homages that are impossible to resist dancing to, and "Don't You Know How Come," with Dee Alexander's saucy vocals, and "I Say Freedom," featuring an uplifting lyric that is espeically fitting considering today's global tensions, linger long after you've heard them. But the lovliest of all is surely "Farewell, My Friend," which, on the heels of the latin-infused "Los Ninos," is a heartstring-tugging R&B melody infused with harmonies--rendered with precision by Joan Colasso and Kevin McIlvaine--that take your breath away. This ballad invites a salute to McClerkin's incredible ability to compose absolute beauty.

"Island of Dreams" is truly a feast for ears; it's a delicious blend of Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Latin, and African melodies and rhythms that make for a wonderful worldly-wise medley.
