Customer Reviews:
amazing collection.......2007-06-01
An incredible bargain ... the only surprise is that it doesn't have "Right or Wrong," which is on the one-disc "Essential" collection.
"What A Great Deal !.......2006-06-29
I own 2 other Bob Wills box sets - Anthology 1935 - 1973, which is a 2 CD set with a lot of good music on it, mostly old. I also have the box set "Encore" that has all Bob's newer stuff from the early 60's (when Tommy Duncan came back) to his recordings in the early 70's before his death (at this time in his career his band cosisted of a lot less members and no horns)both these sets are "pretty" good. But this set from Proper Records "Take me back to Tulsa" is one of the Best deals on the internet today. I paid about 18 bucks for this set "Brand New" and it has four CD's that are loaded with tons of great music going all the way back to when Bob was still playing with Milton Brown (Proper's box set "Milton Brown and his Brownies" is also pretty darn good, but it doesn't have that Wills Western Flair). Bottom line if you are a fan of Western Swing and can't afford at this time to put out about $700.00 for the two Outstanding Bear Family box sets then go for this one, over 100 Great songs you won't be disappointed....the price is right too! "Enjoy" Joe Kopeck - Parkville , MD.
"Come in, Tommy...".......2006-01-06
This boxed set is amazing for the sheer volume of wonderful music it proffers at a fraction of what one would expect to pay for it. Concentrating on the early years, it presents Bob Wills at the dawn of his recording career and continues through the height of his creativity. This is the cream of early Bob Wills, and contains about 60% of his very best material (I am long of the opinion that Bob Wills never made a bad record in his life, and he continued to be productive through his so-called "lean years" of the 1950's, 1960's and beyond). But these tracks are the classics that most fans cherish above all.
Tommy Duncan, Wills' favorite featured vocalist, appears here on many sides, including Time Changes Everything (my personal Bob Wills favorite) and many others. Besides the early Columbia sides, there are examples of his Decca years and other smaller labels. A few of my own favorites include My Little Cherokee Maiden (close runner-up to Time Changes Everything as my favorite Bob Wills record) Sunbonnet Sue (recorded with Milton Brown and His Brownies before Bob formed the Playboys) Maiden's Prayer, Steel Guitar Rag, Basin Street Blues, San Antonio Rose, Silver Bells, Lone Star Rag (an overlooked masterpiece, and one of the catchiest instrumental tunes you've ever heard), Take Me Back To Tulsa, Miss Molly, My Confession, Roly Poly, Hawaiian War Chant, Sugar Moon, Bubbles In My Beer, Deep Water, Faded Love (which Bob wrote and Patsy Cline had a monster hit with) and I Laugh When I Think How I Cried Over You (what a great title!).
For anyone who doesn't know, Bob Wills was a fiddle player who played his first professional gig as a young boy, substituting for his father at a barn dance. Although he grew up around Western music, the Wills family lived in a poor area where there were many black families, and very early he was exposed to and grew to love the Blues and other forms of traditional African-American music. Legend has it that he once rode fifty miles on horseback to attend a Bessie Smith recital, and was the only white person in the audience. He was one of the founding members of Milton Brown and His Brownies, the band credited with creating the style of music now known as Western Swing. When he started his own band, the Texas Playboys, he took a cue from Count Basie and included Brass, Horns and rhythm instruments, and if he couldn't claim to actually invent Western Swing, he certainly perfected it. In the 1940's he was one of the highest paid bandleaders in the US.
Bob was most famous for his "calls" or "hollers". When the band got hot, he would frequently holler "Ahhhhh-hahhhh" or prod them along with such exclamations as "Take it away, Leon" or "Here's that old piano pounder". Or, if the band was playing below his expectations, he would shout, "Johnny in key, please" or virtually anything else that came into his mind.
For many years during the height of his popularity, Bob and his music were rejected by the orthodox country music establishment for being too "jazzy" and ignored by the jazz world for being too "hillbilly". Western Swing is a blend of jazz and western music - it is primarily dance music, with a strong emphasis on vocals (like country), but it also includes jazz instruments like saxophone and trumpets. What makes it most unique are instruments that are traditionally associated with country music (like fiddles and steel guitars), being employed in a "swing" or jazz fashion. Any performance by Bob Wills Texas Playboys incorporates spotlight solos, improvisation and other musical trademarks generally associated with jazz. In other words, his band and his music are totally unique.
Fortunately, there was a revival of interest in Bob Wills and his music which started in the 1960's and continues to this day. After his death in 1974, there was an explosion of new Western Swing bands, with young admirers anxious to copy the Bob Wills sound and keep Western Swing alive. Even country music has finally paid him his due, for today Bob Wills is proudly embraced and revered in country circles as a pioneer and a true original. He is now acknowledged as one of the first to incorporate African American rhythm and Jazz into country music, and his influence has been acknowledged by such diverse artists as Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and even Elvis Costello.
If you are not familiar with Bob Wills, you can't go wrong with this set as an introduction, especially at this price.
HERE THEY ALL COME!.......2005-09-13
Some of these songs aren't on any of the other CD's and if they are, they're different versions. A couple you will want to hear if you haven't already are "Fan It" and "Pray for the Lights To Go Out"- MAN, ARE THOSE OLD BUT GOOD!! "Cowboy Stomp" is another one I hadn't heard before that's in this collection. Anybody who loves Bob Wills should have this, it is worth every penny.
Red Hot Jazz Cowboy blues band!.......2005-01-13
Mix two parts twenties jazz, one part blues, one part swing, two parts honky tonk, and one part crooning music and what do you have? Bob Wills and His Texas Playboy Band! I was turned on to this band by their recording of "Too Busy," which sounds like a cross between early fifties rock and roll and dixieland jazz. These guys were hot! Bob Wills and his band were a perfect example of a group of musicians who played live several hours a day, perfecting their craft - not the talentless celebrities of today who rely on tape loops and beat machines. This set is an unbelievable value. You get four cds for 22$! And this isn't filler. Each cd has songs that you will want to download into your ipod. Excellent!

It's an irresistible concept: Wayne "The Train" tearing it up on 14 original juke joint/swing tunes backed by a raw, first-rate band. He's got the assets to make it work: sharp, incisive vocals, fresh numbers, Lloyd Maines as producer, and an awesome recording band featuring the blazing lead guitar of veteran Hancock sideman Eddie Biebel, guest guitarists Paul Skelton and Dave Biller, and non-pedal steel guitarist Eddie Rivers. By avoiding self-conscious imitation (a pitfall that's done in many acts inspired by the past), they often come fetchingly close to capturing the feel of any number of obscure '40s Texas honky-tonk 78s: swinging out on "Tulsa," down and dirty on "Drinkin' Blues" and the Ernest Tubb-inspired "I Don't Care Anymore" and "Goin' Home Blues," and the earthy "Brother Music, Sister Rhythm." Given Hancock's often-stated affinity for Bob Wills-style swing, the sole disappointment is the scarcity of those sorts of songs here. With a group of musicians this dynamic, a few more rip-roaring moments would have been welcome. --Rich Kienzle

Great Country Swing!.......2007-02-20
When I first heard "Tulsa" on the radio, I didn't know who was singing and I had never heard of Wayne Hancock, but I thought at the time, "This guy, whoever he is, is channeling Hank Williams!" Luckily, I found out who sang that song and immediately went out and bought this album. If you like country swing, you will love this CD!
This here motel livin' is the only life for me..........2007-01-24
Wayne the train...what can I say? Been listenin' to this fella for longer than I can recall now, seeing him live in so many dingy joints than I care to remember. Played pool with him in Birmingham, had Coca-Cola's with him in Atlanta (he's a double a daddy after all), just shot the breeze with him out west. Been there and done that so many times, and he never fails to touch my soul with his lyrics and music and give it all he's got. Few others are like that these days. Remember hanging out with him and Dale Watson once and just wishing my granddaddy was around to have heard them both...
Those who are coming across are either doing so by accident or because they know the scene and Wayne. If the latter is the case, then no words that I half-a*sedly string together can do him justice...you already know. If it's the former case, I still can't do him justice, but you can now at least hear it for yourself.
Start by getting every single thing you can by him. Start with Thunderstorms in my opinion. Then go on to What Daddy Wants...from there, well fella, I really can't pick anything over the other. You just gotta hear it for yourself and then you'll understand.
Can't recommend this cat highly enough...both as a person and through his music.
The Real Deal.......2007-01-11
Wayne "The Train" is the real deal. I own every Wayne album and I just can't get enough. I've seen Wayne's live show twice and he plays non-stop just about all night. I would highly recommend any of Wayne's albums especially if your ready for some real country music.
Review of Live Show from Wayne's Tulsa Tour.......2007-01-08
I saw a great show at Fishlips in Bakersfield last Wednesday: Wayne "The Train" Hancock. He sang like a modern-day Hank Williams, and had a great band, just Jake on stand up bass, and Johnny on the Telecaster. Wayne just strummed an acoustic guitar, one stroke per beat, but was always right in the pocket, his guitar was holding down the tempo while the electric guitar filled in when he wasn't singing, and the bass just kept the beat going like crazy. It is a testament to the trio's chops that they could inspire someone to dance right from the first song. They had a really crazy rhythm going and it never let up. And there was not even a drummer in the band. The bass player was always pushing the beat, but with perfect placement, and intonation, which ain't that easy on a fretless stand up bass.
Wayne played for about 2 hours, and he let his girlfriend Gina play a few songs while he took a break. I took that opportunity to get Wayne's autograph. When he got back on stage he sang and talked about all the counties where he was incarcerated. Quite a few.
I loved the show, it was a prodigious display of musical virtuosity. If you closed your eyes you could have sworn it was Hank Williams, yet he had his own style, and wasn't just a clone of Hank. He was what Hank would sound like if he were alive and just a little bit older than Hank Williams III, his grandson is right now.
The songs on Tulsa are great, and whether he is live or in the studio, he sounds fantastic. Wayne Hancock refuses to compromise his music, to sweeten it, to make it more commercial, to do anything other than play music he really feels deep down inside, and to make you feel it deep down inside, too.
Montgomery in Oklahoma, by way of Texas.......2006-12-10
This is a fine album. It's Hank I channeled through Bill Haley and Bob Wills. It's a nice assortment of rockabilly swing interspersed with some nifty, jazzy ballads, the highlight of which is "Highway Bound." Perhaps the songs on average aren't quite up to Williams' standards. On the other hand, these musicians have chops the Comets never dreamed of.

Jesse.......2007-05-13
What can you say about CCR. Absolutly amazing. I own over 40,000 songs and this is one of my top 5 bands being that they are so original and you can tell they love their music. I love punk rock, grunge, and classic rock and these guys really are in their own genre. I love their remake of "Wanna rock'n'roll" This is really the CD you need to check out if you haven't heard these guys before... Its just to bad there is no "Boys from Oklahoma" ...
Great Collection of My Favorites.......2007-02-15
This double disc live CD includes all my favorite CCR songs, and also pulls up some of their friends to sing with them. Unlike most live CD's there is not a lot of talking, just a lot of great music. This live compilation is a vital for all CCR fans.
Cross Canadian Ragweed.......2007-01-10
If you like Cross Canadian Ragweed, buy this cd. It is a two disc set, with mostly previously recorded tracks, but also some new ones. We are really enjoying it!
Simply the Best.......2006-12-10
Finding out where some of the songs came from (inspiration) was great! I hope everyone read the thank yous...that was just as great as the cd itself. These guys and their families are some of the best people.
Rock and Roll is alive and well.......2006-12-06
If you think the days of true rock and roll are dead and gone, check out this CD. As someone who can barely stand to listen to rock radio anymore, Ragweed is a welcome sign that good music is still being made, whether the mainstream wants us to hear it or not. Cody Canada has really turned into a shredder on the electric guitar, and this CD is worth buying just for the sake of listening to his solos. Canada's playing makes Robert Earl Keen's "Lonely Feeling" into one of the most powerful rock ballads I've heard. All of the tracks show off the skills of this band, and it's amazing how far they have come since "Live at the Wormy Dog" (which is another great CD if you want to hear the early days). The last few songs on the first CD are acoustic, which gives you a chance to hear a side of Ragweed that you maybe haven't heard before. Canada's cover of Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done" really shows off his voice and acoustic guitar skills.
If I have one complaint about this CD, it might be that the CD is a true live CD (no remixing), and sometimes it's hard to hear the awesome musicianship or Canada's vocals over the noise of the crowd. A lot of people will probably love it for the same reason though. All in all, anyone who loves good old fashioned rock and roll will love this CD.

While some artists feel the need to reinvent themselves on a regular basis or to throw together records chockfull of guest stars in order to revive flagging careers, J.J. Cale remains content to continue his reign as king of the laid-back guitar groove. Anyone who thinks it is easy to continually wring new permutations out of the back-porch choogle--Cale's calling card for near three decades--should try it some time. A little violin ("My Gal"), a stab of horns ("Chains of Love"), or some vibraphone tones ("New Lover") is all he needs to freshen the mix. While artists like Eric Clapton and Lynyrd Skynyrd have scored by adding testosterone to Cale's tunes, they would be the first to admit that his music is no less potent for being more relaxed. In fact, it's the off-hand manner in which he presents his political tunes--"Stone River" (ecology), "The Problem" (the President), and "Homeless"--that gives them their poetry and power. --Michael Ross

Is this the best yet - A great album for the J.J. virgin.......2007-02-20
J.J. has done it again. Distinctly J.J. but once again with some great new sounds - this one is as fresh as ever. Is this his best yet? - could well be. Right from the kick off,"My Gal","Chains of Love","New Lover" and on and on. A must have for Foot Tapping Guitar Fans.
Great CD.......2006-10-29
I can listen to J.J. Cale night and day and never get enough. I enjoy all kinds and styles of music but this guy rates towards the top. This cd is 5 stars all the way. If you like Clapton and Knopfler mixed with blues and a soulful voice, you are going to like this cd and J.J. Cale.
True Chill Out Music.......2006-08-14
Great music for a relaxing sunny day at the beach. Despite some serious themes in the lyrics, you can put a smile on your face, have your favorite beverage or whatever, and kick back for the sunset. Having owned Clapton's 461 Ocean Blvd. album for 20 years, I see why people compare Cale to Clapton, though it should be the other way around. Great album from start to finish.
6+ stars.......2006-04-25
I sometimes wonder what makes the difference between an artist and a shooting star ? I'm listening to Cale's music for almost thirty years. Actually I grew with it. From one album to another he never ceases to surprise me. Probably the difference that I'm talking about lies in some magic blend of musical wisdom, imagination, loose attitude and passion for creation. Cale has them all. This album makes no exception. It has everything from each one of his previous approaches: the misty mood of "Naturally", the punchy sound of "Troubadour", the stompy rhythms of "Shades"... For any Cale passionate this is a must. And the sound of the CD is wonderful. Just listen to "The Problem" and "Fancy Dancer" and you know what I'm about.
Amazon, is there a possibility to grant him 6 stars ?...

This is a very nice show with some incredibly extended jams. The show opens with a nice Shine. However, disc 2 is the heat of cheese, Sweet Melinda,Climb,RTW>Howard,Drifting too bad this was not all part of the same set. One of the nicest Howards you will ever hear with spacey jams gallore. But as always Born on the Wrong Planet never lets down with a funky rave breakdown. This is indeed a must have for any Cheese colllection.

Customer Reviews:
good early solo Elvin collection.......2000-03-11
"Tulsa Shuffle" does a wonderful job of surveying Elvin's first three solo efforts after leaving the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The guitar playing alone makes this a worthy collection, and Elvin's party till the cows come home attitude offsets the admittedly less than beautiful vocals Bishop contributes. Jo Baker's vocals are a marked improvement over Elvin's efforts and add considerably to the overall quality of this recording. For anyone who remembers this period of Elvin's recording career I strongly recommend this collection.
Early days of Elvin pay off big time.......1999-07-14
This collection of tracks from the first three records from Elvin and his band of merry men (and women) includes some great soul and blues. Also features the wonderful Stephen Miller on B-3 and vocals along with the late great Jo Baker on vocals - strong stuff.

Album Description
3 CD set features 71 tracks. One of the most interesting and difficult-to-categorize singers in '60s pop, Gene Pitney had a long run of hits distinguished by his pained, one-of-a-kind melodramatic wail. Pitney is sometimes characterized (or dismissed) as a shallow teen idol-type prone to operatic ballads. It's true that some of his biggest hits -- "Town Without Pity," "Only Love Can Break a Heart," "I'm Gonna Be Strong," "It Hurts to Be in Love," and "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa" -- are archetypes of adolescent or just-post-adolescent agony, characterized by longing and not a little self-pity. Sanctuary. 2005.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Selection from Gene.......2006-08-21
I LOVE this collection of music from Gene Pitney. There are 75 tracks! They are organised in chronological order which makes it easy to choose which of the three CDs to listen to (his style changes quite a lot over time, in my opinion). Any other CD of his greatest hits that I have seen or own only have a limited selection of music. It's actually incredible that these are all hits between 1962 and 1972. An added bonus is the poster type thing included which has photos and a history of sorts written by him in 2005. I don't know what it is about his music but I love it. It was very sad to hear of his passing.
In-depth study of Gene's sixties music.......2005-07-05
This is a very comprehensive collection of Gene's finest music from his peak years. All his British and American hits from the sixties and early seventies are here, including his American country hits with George Jones and Melba Montgomery. Gene's late eighties duet with Marc Almond (a re-recording of Something's gotten hold of my heart) is omitted. Also missing is Gene's original recording of Hello Mary Lou, a song he wrote for Ricky Nelson. Apart from those two tracks, everything else that matters is here.
In the sixties, Gene had many high-charting pop hits in Britain and America. Curiously, none of them reached number one, although he reached number two in both countries with different songs. He finally got to number one in Britain via that Marc Almond duet.
I'm gonna be strong was Gene's only hit to reach the top ten in both Britain and America. Gene's other top ten American hits to be found here are The man who shot Liberty Valance, Only love can beak a heart and It hurts to be in love. Gene's other top ten British hits to be found here are Twenty four hours from Tulsa, That girl belongs to yesterday, I must be seeing things, Looking through the eyes of love, Princess in rags, Backstage, Nobody needs your love, Just one smile and the original solo version of Something's gotten hold of my heart. With a total of seventy-five tracks this collection includes not just the essentials, but all the minor hits and even a couple of songs recorded in Italian.
In the year 2000 a fifty-track double-CD was released by the same label (Looking through Gene Pitney. It contained forty-six of the tracks that you can find her. The other three tracks on that collection are Hello Mary Lou, One has may name (with George Jones), Close to my heart and the duet with Marc Almond. This collection contains two extra George Jones duets (Louisiana man, That's all it took) and a duet with Melba Montgomery (Baby ain't that fine) instead of One has my name. Close to may heart, good as it is, cannot be regarded as essential. So that leaves Hello Mary Lou and the Marc Almond duet. If you consider these tracks to be essential, you may prefer the double-CD. Otherwise, you will find everything you want and much more in this compilation of Gene's music. Of course, if you just want a basic sixties hits collection there are plenty of single CD's to choose from.

Great soundtrack CD.......2005-11-26
It's the sountrack to a movie that hasn't been made. That's the best way I can think of to describe this CD. Hammered dulcimers, guitars, and trumpets make this one of the most interesting discs I've heard in a long time. It's dark and quiet, with no vocals. An excellent disc to have in your collection!
