Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

I heard this band on fm94.9 in san diego and the second I heard it, i knew I had to get the CD. Each song is a stand alone work of art with the whole set making for a classic first record. If this band can keep up the momentum that they've started on Introstay, I can even imagine what they'll have in store for us in the future.

This 20-track collection of Sun-label Howlin' Wolf boasts great music, superb sound, straightforward (if not overly-literate) biographical info in the liner notes, a feast of photos, and an economical price. Most of the tracks boast in-the-studio fidelity, including the wonderful alternate take of "How many more years," which is obviously mastered (and very well) from disk. Recording dates would have been nice (these hail from 1951 and 1952), but you can't have everything. No complaints from this customer.

This CD features Howlin' Wolf at his jazziest and refreshingly removed from the manufactured Delta sound the man is so much better known for from his Chicago days. No doubt, Wolf will be forever described in print as primitive and raw and primeval and Stone Age, and so on, but there's little that's primitive about these swinging, extended-chord-driven numbers, in spite of their speaker-taxing intensity and drive. Dig the whole-tone dominant-9th progression (gloriously distorted) that opens "Chocolate Drop" and which reemerges in the first instrumental chorus as quarter-note vs. eighth-note triplets. Marvel at the superbly smooth Willie Johnson lead-in to "Come Back Home" and the beautifully assured syncopation of "Everybody's In the Mood," a tune borrowed from, er, inspired by Glenn Miller's "In the Mood." Back door men and rural-style metaphors for procreative activity would have to wait a couple of years; at Sun, Wolf was too busy being in the groove. Too bad he couldn't have stayed there. This is, by far, his best material, which is another way of saying the blues don't get any better than this. For God's sake, buy this!

    Purcell compositions for Queen Mary span the whole of her brief reign. He provided music for her coronation, on April 11,1689; for the formal celebraton of her birthday on April 30 each year; and for her funeral, on March 5, 1695. At the coronation of William and Mary his 'I was glad' was one of 9 anthems performed during this ceremony. Purcell, in his position as Abbey Organist had tailored the music with precision. The opening passage is in stately block chords-straightforward for the choir to co-ordinate while proceeding along the nave, and arriving in their places just in time to watch the conductor for the closing bars. Later in the service the 2nd anthem by Purcell was sung:"Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem",
    The centerpiece of this disc is the Ode for Queen Mary's birthday"Now does the glorious day appear" and glorious it is!!! It is divided into 14 sections; some solos, some duets and some choruses. It was easily the finest royal ode he had as yet composed, and also the most richly scored; laid out for five part strings, the violas being divided. Thanks to this exotic scoring, the ode abounds in moments of gorgeous opulence. For Mary's funeral services (she died at the age of 33) Purcell composed 3 pieces all included in this disc and all memorable.
    The performers include Westminster Abbey Choir; the New London Consort; soloists: sopranos Emma Kirkby and Evelyn Tubb-countertenor Michael Chance-tenor Ian Bostridge-basses Stephen Richardson and Simon Birchall. All of this under the direction of Martin Neary.
    The notable distinction of this recording is as follows and I quote from the accompanying jacket:"Complete music for Queen Mary's funeral, newly assembled and edited, and performed in Westminster Abbey by the Abbey Choir for the first time since 1695". The recording is beautifully adorned inside and out, and the sticker on the outside proclaims that it is music featured in the Westminster Abbey Funeral service fo Diana, Princess of Wales.

    This CD is subtitled "A Celebration of the Life and Death of Queen Mary" and it thus divides into two sections. To begin with, we hear a number of works written for the Queen during her life, among which are short songs by John Blow (including "The sullen years are past" which has never been recorded before) and a massive setting of one of many odes for the royal birthday celebrations by Henry Purcell - "Now does the glorious day appear," which is a sweeping and powerful work with a variety of ground bass arias, duets, recitatives, choruses and orchestral symphonies - all making for a fine and rewarding listening experience.

    In the second section, the focus moves onto music written during the mourning period after Queen Mary's death. Purcell continues to prove himself the greatest composer of the time, in his semi-sacred songs (in Latin) mourning her death, and in the music he wrote for her funeral. This section is indeed a highlight of the disc as it attempts, in a very scholarly way, to recreate the funeral in the Abbey as it might have sounded in 1695, with the Funeral Sentences by Thomas Morley interspersed with Purcell's own material and a number of Farewell Marches for trumpets and drums only.

    The members of the Abbey Choir under Martin Neary do an admirable job of stepping into the shoes of their forebears under Purcell; accompanied by the period instrument-equipped New London Consort, the sound is truly magnificent. In addition, a number of prestigious soloists appear, including Emma Kirkby and Ian Bostridge (undoubtedly key performers for capturing the purity and delicacy of this music), Michael Chance (who seems a little under-utilised), Stephen Richardson (a rich and profound bass voice if ever I heard one) along with members of the Abbey Choir itself. Of special note- one does not often find a choral CD on which all three senior musical officials at the cathedral (Organist, Assistant Organist and Organ Scholar) are heard playing, but this is one such recording: Martin Baker and Stephen Le Prevost fill in organ continuo parts in various places, as does Dr Neary himself (who also plays the harpsichord for most of the solo pieces).

    Arc of Light have done it again- a recording of extreme loveliness, going right down to the packaging which features some beautiful artistry (in fact, the main cover photograph is given an explanation in the booklet notes owing to the special way in which it was produced). A true gem in all respects.

    4 out of 5 stars Good music, okay performances.......1999-03-26

    This disc presents a somewhat eclectic collection of music devoted to Queen Mary (mostly by Purcell, but by some other contemporaries as well). Despite the common theme I couldn't get rid of the feeling that the pieces didn't "click." Neither did the soloists sound at ease. Michael Chance, perhaps, deserves the most praise. But alas, some of the pieces that he normally sings (e.g. Incassum Lesbia) were given to sopranos, who couldn't do them nearly as much justice. The voice of one of the sopranos kept cracking up (don't know which one: the past-her-prime Emma Kirkby or whoever-she-is Evelyn Tubb). Ian Bostridge is undeniably a great performer, mainly known for his brilliant lieder interpretations. I don't want to say that baroque is not his cup of tea because he is vocally well suited to this repertory. Yet I didn't think he was as great in Purcell as many of his countrymen, such as John Mark Ainsley, Charles Daniels or Mark Padmore (to the extent one recording is enough of a basis to judge, which perhaps it is not). I don't want to be unfair, but I've heard Purcell performed better. This is not a bad recording, just not the best.

    I was introduced to Charlie Rich in 1973 by the means of the radio. "Behind Closed Doors" was a smash hit and the song was flooding the airwaves. I became a Charlie Rich fan at 10 years of age. I began to buy all of his albums and I became introduced to his Rock-A-Billy hits at Sun Records. Sam Phillips who founded Sun Records, has been quoted to say that "Charlie Rich was the most gifted musician at Sun Records". The Sun Years C.D. is a collection of songs that show Charlie's talents as a musician and a song writer. Charlie was a rocker at heart. If you think all Charlie did was country music....boy are you in for a treat. The Sun Years C.D. has numerous hits such as "Lonely Weekends", "Break Up" and "Everthing I Do Is Wrong". These 3 songs showcase this C.D. "Break Up" was written by Charlie and Jerry Lee Lewis was suppose to record it, but something happened in England and the rest is history. If you are a Rock-A-Billy Fan, a 50's Rock Fan, a Charlie Rich Fan, this C.D. is for you. Charlie Rich died in 1995 without much fanfare. Charlie was GREAT and deserves to be heard...Enjoy this great collection of songs.

      I am not absolutely sure but I have every reason to believe that the first Johnny Cash song I heard was "A Boy Named Sue." So when I first encountered the Cash persona it was as the guy who was performing to convicts on the classic "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison" and "Johnny Cash at San Quentin" albums. What I did not not know was that "Folsom Prison Blues" was one of the first songs that Cash ever wrote back in 1954 when he was in the Air Force and it was not recorded until two years later when he signed with the legendary Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Memphis. These are some of the things that I learned from the Cash bio-pic "Walk the Line," and I suspect I am not alone in being interested in checking out Cash's early work after watching the film. That is what led me to track down this 18-track collection of Johnny Cash during "The Sun Years."

      "Folsom Prison Blues" was set up in the film as Cash's first hit for Sun, but in fact when Cash came back to show Phillips that he could do more than gospel what he really played was "Hey Porter," which was released with "Cry, Cry, Cry" on the flip side and made #14 on the Country Singles chart in in 1955. The following year "Folsom Prison Blues" hit #4 and Cash had his first pair of #1 country hits with "Get Rhythm" and "Walk the Line." There are three more top Country singles with "Guess Things Happen That Way," "There You Go," and his biggest hit, "Ballad Of A Teenage Queen," which topped the charts for ten weeks. In 1958 Cash signed with Columbia and wrote fini to his days at Sun. Virtually every song here was a top ten single on the Country charts, "Give My Love to Rose" being the exception because it only made it to #13. You look at the chart success of these songs and you can see why Cash became a major figure in Country music in the 1950s: "Home Of The Blues: (#3), "Big River" (#4), "Next In Line" (#9), "Come in Stranger" (#6), "Train of Love" (#7), "So Doggone Lonesome" (#4), and "The Ways of a Woman in Love." Backing up Cash on all of these songs are the Tennessee Two, which originally consisted of guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant.

      There are only 18 tracks here so this is not a comprehensive collection (there is a five-disc version that has a better claim to that distinction). A few hits like "Don't Make Me Go" (#9), "All Over Again" (#4), and "What Do I Care" (#7), so there is room to quibble, but they are minor all things considered (remember, this is a Rhino album and they are the masters of reissuing blasts from the past). Besides, the three songs that are included that are not "hits"--"Rock Island Line," "Luther Played the Boogie," and "Mean Eyed Cat"--certainly represent the early Johnny Cash, which is ultimately what this album is all about. Just do not be surprised if this collection only whets your appetite for going back to the early years and hearing more from that period.

      This is a solid 18 track collection of some of the best songs that Johnny Cash recorded for Sun Records. Of course, almost everything Johnny Cash recorded for Sun Records was good, so this is by no means a complete collection of all his essential Sun recordings. But it is an excellent place to begin to discover the early years of Johnny Cash. Highly recommended.

      If you only buy 1 Johnny Cash cd, make it this one(though your 2nd purchase should be his life stuff from Louisisana Hayride Shows). This cd has the majority of hsi Sun hit songs, and his finest and most rockabilly oriented material from Fulson Prison Blues to Get Rhyth, as well as novelty hillbilly bop numbers like Luther Played the Boogie Woogie and ballads like I Walk the Line. A great cd, and a perfect into to the Sun recordings of johnny cash.

        It may be no secret by now that Charlie Rich was eclectic himself in his choice and style of music, so eclectic, so wide-ranging that he could not be categorized (a bit like Ray Charles). Due to that he never really achieved the success that he really deserved, years of countrypolitan or not, as nobody knew how to promote him. After "Behind Closed Doors" hit, the umpteen record companies that he had recorded for all seemed to release his songs from their vaults to capitalize on his new fame. I bought them all since I was not always able to when they first came out; they are all included in this package. Charlie had made new, equally as good or better. versions of his so-so hits (or non-hits) as he moved from record company to record company. Apparently he never did so with "A Little Bit Sweet", a favorite of this then-romantic teenager in the listening area of his home base of Memphis. "On My Knees", included here, was redone effectively with country singer Janie Fricke near the end of his countrypolitan reign. There was more than one version of "Sittin' and Thinkin'", a regional hit. The bluesy "There Won't Be Anymore" was restyled into a country hit in the mid-70s. The more ambitious version of "Midnight Blues" became an often-played album cut from "Every Time You Touch Me (I Get High"). The particular selection of the songs here seem very similar to the compilation "Original Hits and Midnight Demos" available in another venue. In any case, these are the originals from which the other versions sprang. This is a great piece of musical history. I value my own well-kept collection of these songs by a musician talented on all levels. I miss him.

        Years before he found the sophisticated countrypolitan formula that would vault him to international fame in the mid-70s, Rich was a second-generation Sun rock 'n' roller. Starting in 1958, he released a string of truly fine singles that wed his background in R&B, blues and jazz to the reverbed energy of Sun's rockabilly sound. Surprisingly, he had virtually no commercial success in his six years at Sun, peaking at #22 with the self-penned "Lonely Weekends," hitting #67 on the country chart with "Who Will the Next Fool Be," and scraping the bottom of the pop chart at #111 with "Just a Little Bit Sweet."

        Perhaps his delivery at such an early point in his career was just too similar to Elvis' contemporaneous work at RCA to capture its own audience. He sang with authority and not a little bit of swagger, but his Sun sides (actually released on the Sun subsidiary Phillips International) never ignited a commercial following. His success in placing songs with Sun labelmates suggests that perhaps Rich's style may have cut too smoothly across genres to engage those coming strictly from the worlds of rock 'n' roll, blues or R&B. It would be another 15 years before the record-buying world would wake up to his synthesis.

        Rich's first single, "Whirlwind" b/w "Philadelphia Baby," shows a purer rockabilly sound to be a good fit for Rich's voice. By his second outing he was mixing in gospel ("Big Man"), and his third, "Lonely Weekends," adds blue country soul to the rock 'n' roll. He sang (and to a large extent, penned) doo-wop ("School Days"), Latin ballads ("On My Knees"), blues ("Who Will the Next Fool Be," "Midnight Blues"), R&B ("Easy Money," "Finally Found Out"), and pop jazz ("There's Another Place I Can't Go"). His versatility is admirable and effective, though it was probably confusing for the marketing folks at Sun.

        Varese's compilation of Rich's original 10 singles (both A and B sides) is augmented by three album tracks and a pair of cuts previously unissued by Sun. Highlights among the bonuses are Rich's heartbroken, yet bouncy "Goodbye Mary Ann," the Jerry Lee Lewis styled piano rockabilly "Yes Ma'am," and the jazzy piano-driven blues growl "There Won't Be Anymore."

        Fans familiar only with Rich's hit '70s sides, and perhaps "Lonely Weekend," as well as fans of '50s rock 'n' roll (or modern day revivalists like Big Sandy), will delight in this lesser explored side of The Silver Fox.
