About the Artist
The Texas-born daughter of a Southern Baptist minister father and a choir director mother, Nelda Sisk grew up singing gospel music and hymns, but by the time her family moved to California, Nelda, still a little girl, was already exploring musical diversity. A burning desire to be one of The Supremes at age 11 soon gave way to idolizing Joan Baez and other '60s Folk Revival icons in high school, eventually finding her way to bluegrass, Nelda met multi-instrumentalist George Sisk when she was 21. Through years of traveling, raising a family and unflagging self-exploration one thing held constant: music. "I have always been in some kind of weekend band, Bluegrass usually, but for several years we had a band that was such a weird mixture of musicians that we played dang near everything. We lived on a small island that only had one drummer available who happened to play jazz. The keyboard player was into new age music and '60s folk rock, a rock & roll guitar and bass player, George playing rhythm guitar, and me singing everything from country to jazz and rock...even a few show tunes. We called ourselves the New Tasmanian Devils."

In 1996 the Sisks moved to Nashville, where Nelda started a home business called Music Travels, booking airline and hotel reservations for music professionals. She also began writing songs more seriously than ever, becoming a new folk finalist in the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival (an honor that Nanci Griffith, Hal Ketchum and Steve Earle have shared in the past). And she began making plans toward fulfilling an old dream to record her own CD...

I live in the Nashville area, I hear a lot of singer songwriters, and I buy a lot of cd's...This one is one of the best! I actually play this one over and over and have really enjoyed it. There is something real about the lyrics and the songs are upbeat. The best money I've spent in a while on entertainment!

Thanks Sisko's for putting out a great album, I'll look forward to more in the future.

I have listened to their Cd over and over, again and again. Why? The lyrics are well thought out and reach deep into the heart and mind. The musical melodies compliment the lyrics in every way. It states in the liner notes that "no exotic plants, animals or organs were used or abused in the production of this project" and I truly believe that to be true--production-wise, this puppy is as clean as a whistle. Great tunes (all written by Nelda and George Sisk) are the strong suit, but it sure doesn't hurt to have the likes of Doug Jernigan (one of my favorite steel players) and guitarist Shane Theriot on board, either. And is that the same George Sisk (on banjo) who was such a figurehead in the infamous Acidophilus Rangers? Nice stuff all the way around...

Momma Sisko and the other kids may not like that title, but I do. I've heard a lot of singer/songwriter projects over the years, and this one's a real standout.

Good, solid writing, outstanding production and a real sense of heart to Nelda Sisk's music herein contained.

Buy a copy, and you'll be transported to a Texas Road House, ala The Devil's Backbone Tavern, one of the last two places Hank William (yeah, I know there's no such thing as "Sr," but he was the first one everybody knew) played a paying gig. You can still see the bullet holes in the walls, and you can almost hear Smokey Dacus warming up for a standup drum solo.

She can swing that good.

And, that's a good thing.

In the event it's gone unnoticed, I like this CD. I own one, and I just might buy another.

IF YOU ARE IN THE HABIT OF READING THE CREDITS ON RECORDINGS YOU WILL SEE THIS LADY A LOT; MOST NOTABLY WITH ROBERTA FLACK AND THE LATE LUTHER VANDROSS. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT INSPIRATIONAL SET WITHOUT ALL THE HISTRIONICS WE SOMETIMES HEAR FROM OTHER ARTISTS. THIS SET IS SMOOTH AND UPLIFTING.
