Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Songs you'll treasure for ever!.......2000-11-21

Steve and Jenny Moss are two very bright lights on the old-timey and bluegrass songwriting scene. Their album is chock full of incisive lyrics and attention-grabbing turns of phrase, combined with some marvellously intriguing arrangements. Their vocal harmonies are smooth and compelling as well. The underlying theme of these songs, that of cherishing love, be it present or past, is timeless and makes every song come alive and remind you of your own experiences with these universal ideas. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I'm willing to bet that most people will remember where they were, who they were with, and what everyone was wearing/eating/drinking/saying the first time they heard "Silver In My Dreams." It's a classic, already.

5 out of 5 stars One foot tapping and a voice singing along!.......2000-10-23

Steve and Jenny Moss's debut CD has snappy tunes that make you sing along on the first listen (such as "Shake Your Footprints Off My Heart" and "Back in Omro") and ones that make you think of days gone by ("January Wind"). "Liza Dear" is a loving message from parent to child, and "Something Borrowed" tells the warming tale of a couple who meet at the wedding of their respective ex-sweeties. Lyric-wise, Steve and Jenny Moss are storytellers. Throughout the album, song after song tells a story: love found and love lost, old friends, his ex's mom's crystal vase the divorced fellow keeps to remind him of her, the widow and mother of four whose "paper plates/ And plastic spoons" are all "Silver In My Dreams."

These stories are timeless, and you'll identify with the tales being told, if you've ever loved anyone anywhere. What's more, you'll think again and again of the characters in the songs as you listen, "Hmmm, I know that gal from Omro, and that fellow in Omaha, and 'East St. Louis Men' ain't that much different from those in Long Island or London."

The quality of the Mosses' lyrics, vocals and guitar playing keep the album flying, and their extensive musical background in Old Timey folk music style, bluegrass, and contemporary folk styles, gives them the knowledge and technique to pull it all together. The singer-songwriters have also pulled in a talented pool of guest musicians to help out with a range of instruments from fiddle and mandolin to pedal steel guitar and dobro.

Have a listen and you'll find yourself running this one on continuous play. I must confess, I am the artists' sister and sister-in-law; it's only fair to let you know. But this review is straight from my own listening, and come to think of it, straight from the heart (just like these songs). Fans of contemporary singer-songwriter folk music, country and bluegrass are bound to be pleased to find here, in the songwriters' words, "something borrowed... something old, someone new" ("Someting Borrowed"). You'll like what you hear too!
