About the Artist
Ransom has been together for seven years, five of which were spent as the house band at Austin City Saloon in Lexington, KY., known as the home of John Michael Montgomery. Ransom came in and took over when John left and in the years that followed, were able to build up a substantial fan base. With the release of their debut album on Bamboo Records, they left the house gig and are now playing around the region in support of the album. The band has showcased for labels such as Asylum, Mercury, Polygram, and others and has opened for countless national acts. They have won regional and statewide contests and are considered by the music community to be the best of the Central Kentucky region.

Product Description
"Livin It Up" is the debut album from Ransom, long considered Central Kentuckys best rockin' country band. The album features guitar driven upbeat country with an attitude, with songs about real-life issues that everyone can associate with. The songs are fun and energetic. The vocals range from powerful and driving to touching and moving. The music is guitar fueled, with a rock influence that sets it apart from other country sounds. The songs are country, the music southern rock infused, and the entire thing is just good, plain fun!!

Having long ago earned his rock wars stripes as working class foil and foiled Van Halen superstar, Sammy Hagar finally understands who's laughing best. A half-dozen albums into a post-VH second solo career where Hagar has sometimes seemed more like Dorian Grey than Red Rocker Redux, the veteran rocker kicks off his shoes again--along with some longstanding presumptions. Hagar succeeds here by nimbly channeling the Ghost of Jimmy Buffet Whenever--even if the veteran rocker's Gulf of California acoustic blues is about as authentic as Robert Johnson's Delta surfing legend. The opening "Sam I Am" sets the tone, a slice of slide-guitar autobio-blues that borrows from the folks who stole it from the people who nicked it from the southern blues masters; Sammy's "Ice Cream Man," if you can forgive him (and after his greasy cover of Dylan's "Rainy Day Women" you might not). Hagar does a subtler job suggesting the spirit of Brian Wilson via the harmonies of the loping "Living On a Coastline," channels a little faux Tennessee twang into "Halfway to Memphis" before a thoroughly Hagar-ized cover of the Pointers "I'll Take You There" and the surprisingly tender lullaby "Some Day" close the album out on a high note. With tracks like "I Love This Bar" and "One Sip," it's a party-hearty record whose crafty appeal seems to vary in direct proportion to one's number of empty cerveza bottles. This is music with a purpose: to make sunburned drunks dance badly. Sober pale people take heed. -- Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I am glad I didn't buy it ! .......2007-05-29

After listening to the songs on the album, and then hearing a song from "The Pointer Sisters" -- Let me take you there -- I decided not to buy it. I could not listen to Sammy sing the song, the same one I heard the Pointer Sisters sing in Vegas, years ago. Man, what happen to the old Sammy?

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy RED Heads!.......2007-05-15

You have to be a TRUE RED Head to totally appreciate what Sam has put together on this release. I love the addition of the Country version of Half Way to Memphis, it works. Rock On Sammy and I'll see you in Cabo!

2 out of 5 stars I had to buy it to believe it...........2007-04-03

...but it's true. Sammy's gone country. There are 2 MAYBE 3 tracks on this whole album that are any good. My taste in music is very broad with one exception - country. If I had to name one rock icon of mine, it would be Sammy and...Sammy...you really let me down with this album. It pains me to say so, but I can't recommend this album to the classic Hagar rock fan.

3 out of 5 stars There's a fine line between writing about your life experiences and just being a shill.......2007-02-15

The Good
I want to get this out of the way before we get started; I love Sammy Hagar's music and I love Cabo Wabo Tequila. With that being said, on to the review. The Red Rocker toots his own horn on the acoustic/country opener "Sam I Am." The track has an incredible bounce to it, as Hagar drops references to his past and present life. "The Way We Live" starts off with a great rock riff, but breaks down to a heavy vocal track. Hagar's new found affection for country music is expressed again on the touching ballad "Halfway to Memphis." Sammy's always had a way with the ballad, but come to think of it, his heavy stuff was kind of pumped up ballads. Anyway, it's another great emotional acoustic ditty with "Sailin'."

The Bad
Tough to be the hard rock Jimmy Buffett when your new album has you sounding almost exactly like Buffet. There's a lot more country influence to Sammy's sound. In fact, two of the songs were co-written by country music stars; "I Love This Bar" (Toby Keith) and "One Sip" (Kenny Chesney). And if you didn't know that Hagar lives in Mexico, owns two bars, a tequila company, and lives to tell you all about them; you certainly will after listening to this album. Livin' It Up is basically an advertisement for all things Sammy.

It would be fine if it was subtle, but it's too in your face. For example; "Living on a Coastline" (about Mexico), "Mexico" (um, Mexico again), "The Way We Live" (Cabo Wabo Cantina), "I Love This Bar" (um, Cantina again), "One Sip" (Cabo Wabo Tequila disguised as a love song), and "I'll Take You There" (it's a cover, and Hagar found a way to work his cantina and a former Van Halen song [Cabo Wabo] into the lyrics).

The Verdict
Livin' It Up is a decent lounging album, but its more so catered to Hagar's bars (or any Mexican themed bar). It's not so great for fans of Sammy's hard rock past or rock music fans in general. There's a fine line between writing about your life experiences and just being a shill for your lifestyle. Sammy Hagar has crossed the line into shillsville. (Guess I blew my chance at some free tequila?)

5 out of 5 stars George in relaxed mood.......2005-05-17

This is in many ways a typical George Strait album of the eighties but it finds George in a particularly relaxed mood - almost as if he's trying to tempt a few Don Williams fans to buy the album.

The album yielded two number one country hits (Love without end amen, I've come to expect it from you), both original songs, and a country top five hit (Drinking Champagne), which was a cover of a song originally recorded by Cal Smith. George recorded two songs (Someone had to teach you, She loves me she don't love you) with his road band. The other tracks including the hits were recorded with studio musicians - however, the album flows seamlessly and if you didn't read the credits (or this review) you probably wouldn't realize that different musicians were used. There are plenty of other wonderful songs here including Lonesome rodeo cowboy, We're supposed to do that now and then, When you're a man on your own and Stranger in my arms.

This is a very enjoyable George Strait album. It probably isn't the place to begin a George Strait collection (unless you're also a Don Williams fan) but it definitely desevves a place in such a collection.

4 out of 5 stars Real country style album.......2001-09-12

Livin it up is a good album by George Strait for the most part. I really think though that the singles are the best songs of the cd and they were wisely chosen. All 3 singles stayed at #1 on the country billboard charts back then for then 5 weeks each. These were some of his biggest singles ever. The other 7 songs are good but are very dry though and alot of the nonsingles are missing emotion. But livin it up is a great record by george.

5 out of 5 stars Out of 26 albums, this is my favorite.......2000-05-30

What can I say? After 10 years in release and 25 other albums, this is still my favorite. When six out of ten songs rate as instant classic, including four non-singles, you know it's a premier collection. Love Without End, Amen nicely summarizes every father's feelings, both in this world and the next. Extra points for using the word "shiner" in a song. A driving beat and reproachful lyrics that aren't too reproachful put I've Come to Expect It over the top. Satisfaction that occurs when a person's dumper becomes a dumpee themselves is conveyed nicely in Someone Had to Teach You, and We're Supposed To Do That recognizes the fact that love isn't always 24 hours of perfection. The other two favorites, Lonesome Rodeo Cowboy and She Loves Me do great with their respective tempos.

Drinking Champagne is perhaps a tad too lethargic for the emotion it wishes to carry, and its message is nearly a sequel to the situation in When You're a Man On Your Own.

An almost-perfect balance of slow and fast tunes is attained, and feeling and attitude are utilized almost perfectly on every song. The bar is raised even higher than usual.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Record.......2000-01-12

This is the first George Strait record I got. I'll never forget when I got it, I listened to it alot, more then alot. Great songs on this record of course classics like Someone Had to Teach You, I've Come To Expect to From You, Lonesome Rodeo Cowboy, Drinking Champane, She's Got Me, Love Without End Amen, and Stranger In My Arms make you want to sing, stomp your feet, and let out the Country feeling HEEHAW...Classic George a MUST GET

4 out of 5 stars A strange mix, but a great album.......1999-12-25

Most Strait albums are so well formulated, and predictable. He knows what works, what the fans want and delivers! This album departs a little from the norm, as did 'Beyond the Blue Neon'. Some of the traditional songs are very melancholy, while the others remind me of what Sinatra would sound like if he made a country recording. This rift in styles makes a strange mix for the album, but it is still good. I like this ' Frank Sinatra side' of George, and he shows his Sinatra influence with sincerity, while still being country thru and through.

This is great stuff --Spirited, toe-tapping, knee-slapping, boisterous Celtic Rock with a Christian outlook! The songs are fun and joyful, the messages positive and uplifting -- including a rousing instrumental piece ("Piping Hot", featuring Uillean pipes), a traditional Irish song (Raggle Taggle Gypsy), and "Hey Paddy", a great song for your next St. Patrick's day celebration!

If you are a fan of Celtic Rock-- buy this CD! If you are a fan of Christian Rock -- Buy this CD! And if you like both -- you'll be in heaven, laddie! BUY THIS CD!

I really like this CD. It has a great sound. I have been to an Electrics concert here in denver and i would go to another one in a nano. They are an exellent group...worth listening to!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great celtic music with a great christian message........1998-10-14

This disc is a lot of fun. The opening track delivers a punch and a message about the joys of responding to the invitation to the "Party Goin' on Upstairs" .

You can tell this group is having a good time as they plow through "Rolling Home", slow down for a minute with the ballad "Come Back Down" (about the troubles we see now, and will things be restored "when you come back down"), then jump right back in with the fast moving "Living it up When I Die" (self explanatory).

Sometimes the vocals are a little weak, but the pipes, fiddle, guitars (they even got Phil Keaggy in there on the very strange track called "Face"), organs, drums... even an acordian... really keep things together.

This is a great second release (in the States). Get this CD now, and don't miss them if they come to town; they give a great performance.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked since day 2.......2000-05-18

I am an admitted skeptic when it comes to new music, especially when it comes to swing. It's not that I don't like many of the "neo-swing" artists, it's just the tremendous glut of them that became big while sounding generally the same. So said skepticism was on full display when I first met Jon Ceperano and listened to "Livin' It Up." Then I realized after a second listen that Jet Set Six is not a swing band. Sure, their music definitely has elements of swing, and you can do all those crazy dance moves to it, but why pigeonhole such an amazing piece of art by lumping it into one genre. It's like putting a Picasso next to the poker playing dogs. Sure they're both cool, but the true greatness and feeling of the artist shines through in the masterpiece. "Livin It Up" is such a masterpiece. Instead of rehashing an old (but great) sound, Jet Set Six evolve it. The horn section not just has talent, but also power. They assert themselves so you can't miss them, but never overpower the whole. Jon's lyrics are at once ingenious and also remarkably simple. His way of translating everyday situations into his remarkable wordplay is pure magic. I can't leave out the rhythm section, who are able to rock out and mellow down but always seem to keep my foot tapping. Bassist Josef Pelletier offers a great vocal turn on the old hobo folk tune "Jack and Joe" also. Let's put it simply... If you like to have fun and feel good, this is the CD you NEED. Buy "Livin' It Up." Now. When Jet Set Six comes to your town- and they will- see them play. Jet Set Six is just that good.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it, buy it, buy it.......2000-02-22

Everyone else is right, there's nothing more to say. These guys are smart and funny, and they can really PLAY. I saw them live and let me tell you, they can plan ANYTHING. If you can see them, go. If you can't, buy this album. They even make their phone number sound great. One of the best swing (or any other) albums I own -- and I own a LOT!

5 out of 5 stars Foot stompin' crazy stuff !.......1999-10-02

The songs just don't leave you for days after listening to it once! It's a new twist on swing and rock, really gets you going. I've bought a bunch of copies as presents. Can't wait for another album!

5 out of 5 stars Jet Set Six Injects much needed vitality into swing movement.......1999-09-02

Whether you have grown weary of the typical fast blues and the conveniently hip yet slightly anachronistic lyrics of the modern swing band, or if you "dig" all of the modern "swing" bands, Jet Set Six is for you. On the one hand, "these cats can really play." If you like upbeat, danceable, and generally fun music, you will like Jet Set Six. On the other hand, "these cats can really play." The band features musicians with advanced degrees in Jazz studies and years of studio work. They aren't satisfied to ride the crest of the swing music by churning out just what you would expect...and yet their music doesn't impose itself upon you. It just feels right. Do yourself a favor and see them live if you can. If you hear them live, I guarantee you will want this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars 90s swing -- finally!.......1999-08-31

if i have any beef with the neo-swing movement -- at least musically -- it's this seemingly mindless evocation of the original swing era, as if merely by singing "zoot suit" this or "big daddy" that, one has a swing lyric.

the timeless tunes of that era were about life and the people and happenings in it -- and that is why i like this jet set six recording so much.

not only do they have a great ear for tunes, mr. ceparano and co. manage to give a modern spin to the swing form with smart, clever lyrics on the more anxiety-ridden relationships of the 90s ("every single day," "the perpetual bachelor," "the dame that knotted my rope").

given the glut of pretentious nostalgia most neo-swingers probably never knew, the jet set six are one of the few originals on the scene with a natural feel for the material.
