Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!
Stellar cast in a first rate musical.......2006-01-29
A sparkling Broadway lead debut from Sutton Foster (run, don't walk to any live performances given by Ms. Sutton) with superb comedic support given by Mark Kudisch and Harriet Harris (who won the Tony Award for this performance)
Thoroughly Modern Millie.......2006-01-27
Truth be told it took me a while to warm up to this cast Album beacuse at first listen it is dull, bland , and completly boring.
But after a few listens I really got into it althought there are still problems and I only like a few songs I don't completly detest it like I did the first time I heard it.
The songs I enjoy are:
Not For The Life of Me
Thoroughly Modern Millie
They Don't Know
The Speed Test
What Do I need With Love
Forget About the Boy
Long As I'm here With You
The problem with Millie is that the slow songs are boring or from another show which is annoying. it seems the the people who wrote the music and lyrics for this show only used their talent on the up-beat songs but slacked on the slow ballads.
Buy this album only if you are a super Broadway fan like me , other-wise you will probably be dissapointed.

There's a Moon Out Tonight..........2007-06-01
This is a wonderful collection for those who remember the term "golden oldies". There are plenty of memories--whether real or perceived--in this extensive set. The perfect musical gift for that 60 year-old uncle you never thought could have been cool once. If you liked the soundtrack for "American Graffiti", this is right up your street.

The Only Big Band CD You'll Ever Need.......2005-08-30
It's a great cd to listen to while my students are doing math.
Great Introduction and Great Toe-Tapping Listening.......2003-05-01
Someone who knows the era better than I will have to tell how well-chosen the tracks are, but I've really enjoyed listening to this. The recording quality is indeed low but you need to regard that as akin to the tool marks in fine leather; they are proof of its authenticity. What do you expect for a track recorded in 1927? It's not going to be DDD. If you've ever heard some old tune that you wanted to hear again, and never knew its name, there's a good chance you'll find it on this CD
Excellent Sampler.......2002-08-12
The CD name is a little ambitious, but if you want an excellent sampler of the best in big band, this is a great choice. True, some songs are not up to current recording standards, but the quality is very good for recordings made back in the 30s and 40s. I don't care much for the Buddy Rich and Woody Herman songs (too "Las Vegas" sounding) but everything else is first rate. Totally appropriate that it ends with "Sing Sing Sing", which I consider the best big band song ever recorded.
Great Songs - Poor Recording Quality.......2001-09-02
Although the song titles are great, the music sounds very flat. these songs are all likely original recordings. If you want to hear the original sound and imagine your stereo systems as one of those old horn-type record players, you'll love this CD. Otherwise, find something else.
chocked full of big band.......2000-10-27
I love to listen to the old standards. Music has such a way of taking you back to a simpler time. This is the cd that achieves that. If you are new to big band music this is definately the one to buy.

What could possibly be cooler than hipping kids to some of the best pop music ever made? Music for Little People makes this project simple by producing a batch of the Beatles' sunniest songs performed by a prime adult band and your children's peers and slightly reworked in kid-friendly keys. The result is largely devoid of over-the-top cutesy-poo histrionics--these kids can really sing and the harmonies are quite commendable. Young listeners will be thrilled to sing along on the bouncy chorus of "Life Goes On," to count and do the alphabet on "All Together Now," and to distinguish the amusing sounds of a penny whistle, mandolin, and zither. Both Raffi and blues artist Eric Bibb make guest appearances, but the shining star at this party is child singer Bernie Steinberg, who takes lead on three tunes, including the touchingly performed "Mother Nature's Son" and the amazingly soulful "Birthday." --Paige La Grone
Customer Reviews:
Honest Effort.......2007-06-09
The songs of the Beatles are timeless. I loved most of the renditions on this CD, but there were a couple that I would have liked to have been done differently. This is strictly a matter of personal taste, and I'd still recommend it. I have no complaints about the seller, either.
Most songs Pretty Good for young kids.......2007-02-19
My children are boys ages 5 and 6. They love the "Birthday" song on this CD, actually. They also love "Yellow Submarine" and "All Together Now." A few others are OK, such as "Ob-La-Di" and "Octopus's Garden" and "When I'm 64." No, it's not the Beetles singing it, and I personally usually hate cover albums; it's disconcerting at first to hear a different version or different voice singing a familiar classic song. (We usually listen to kids music as well as "real" party songs-type music and other "real" music including even Johnny Cash.) And, yes, it's a little irritating to have some of the intro's by kids, such as a child complaining that it's been raining all winter before the kids sing "Here Comes the Sun." However, my kids (and their friends) do enjoy hearing other kids singing the songs. And I enjoy many of the songs myself. My biggest complaint is that many of the songs are too mellow and deemed to be not very fun by my bunch. Perhaps more suited to younger kids or girls or calmer kids? I would recommend it overall.
Fun version for kids.......2006-09-11
Who can sing Beatles songs better than the Beatles? No one, of course! But it sure beats Barney! Or, at least it's a nice change from many kids'albums. I play regular Beatles' music for my kids too. But they also like this album a whole lot. Another reviewer said that children like to hear children singing and this is definitely true in our case. I think it's well done and I base much of my choices in childrens' music on what I can stand to hear repeatedly in the car. So this one definitey qualifies for that standard. I'd highly recommend it.
lame.......2006-05-27
Birthday is as lame as it gets, except for the version on Bugs Bunny & Friends: Sing The Beatles. The better version is on White Album: disc 2
The kids love it...and I like it too........2006-03-16
My two kids love it --- my daughter since she was 1 and my son since he was 3 - and we've had it for about 6 months now. Ok not all the songs are so great and yes the Beatles sing it better then a bunch of kids do (but kids like hearing kids singing) and every once and a while I try to skip something but my son usually stops me and says "No, I want to hear the ...whatever... song. " They especially love ObLaDi, Octopus's Garden, Yellow Submarine, Birthday and All Together Now.

Slightly Stoopid is very smart sound........2007-02-01
Great unique sound. Excellent laid back sound. I am so glad I found this band.
Totally Unique.......2006-05-30
You will not find another band like Slightly Stoopid. You can put them in the same category as bands like 311 and Sublime, but they have a style all their own. And as any person with a good taste in music will tell you, their style is impossible to hate. I've played this CD for a person who ONLY listens to country and she loves it. It's a brilliant mix of ska, reggae, and punk. I also highly recommend their newer CD Closer To The Sun. Get this CD if you want your summer to have the perfect soundtrack.
good reggea surfers band.......2006-05-26
its a really good ,band that remind me of sublime, BUT WHY THE SONG KILL ME DEEP INSIDE IS SO MUCH BETTER ALIVE ,THAN THE ONE OF THE ALBUM
Everything You Need.......2006-05-25
Slightly Stoopid is one of my favorite bands, and their album, Everything you Need is definatley my favorite album. It is an upbeat mix of reggae and punk. This CD is fresh, the band plays more reggae and less punk now but they hold true to their punk roots. Their previous CD was an acoustic only, which was a nice change from the usual loud instruments and rock star attitude. One of their songs is repeated on their acoustic CD and on Everything you Need. The song, Wiseman is very different when listened to plugged and unplugged. With the different instrumental accompaniments, the singer, Miles Doughty's, voice is really showcased well. It is hard to describe his voice, though it is very unique. It has a calming effect. I have personally seen them live and they put on a spectacular show. When you listen to the lyrics, you think all they talk about are drugs and having a good time. But if you listen closer, the lyrics are about more than just that. They talk about brotherhood and love from a different angle. Their fun reggae rhythm and rhymes mixed with their upbeat punk style and imagery make them an interesting band to listen to. I cannot wait to see what the future holds in store for the band. As I said before, I have seen them live and I will not miss them if they come through town again. The best way I can describe the band is 311 sound of music with more of Sublime's lyrics, and the Rancids hair. My second favorite album is their newest one it is on the top of my shopping list.
THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL.......2005-09-07
If you are into rock/reggae/acoustical music, this CD is worth your while. It contains good music and catchy hooks. My friend told me about this CD and I am glad I bought it.

Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Could any single disc live up to the title The Only Broadway CD You'll Ever Need? Of course not, though this 76-minute disc gives it a good try. Out of the RCA vaults come original cast performances such as Zero Mostel's "If I Were a Rich Man," Carol Channing's "Hello Dolly," and Oliver's "Consider Yourself." From topnotch revivals come Patti LuPone's "Anything Goes," Peter Gallagher's "Luck Be a Lady," Alan Cumming's "Money," and Bebe Neuwirth's "All That Jazz." Also included are selections from newer shows Titanic and Ragtime. The collection starts to get thin when it has to hunt for available versions of classic songs, ending up with an "America" from Jerome Robbins' Broadway, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" from the 1979 Oklahoma! revival, and an "Impossible Dream" from Colm Wilkinson's solo album--all fine recordings, but nothing that could be considered a first choice. And of course there are many omissions, most notably the shows of Stephen Sondheim (a longtime RCA artist, even!). A follow-up, The Only Other Broadway CD You'll Ever Need, proved what everyone expected--the original's title was indeed an impossible dream. But it got your attention, didn't it? --David Horiuchi

where is all the music.......2001-11-05
Okay all of those songs are great but I have a question. Where is Andrew LLoyd Webber on this CD? Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, Evita and CATS? How can you manage to make a CD of Broadway with out Andrew Lloyd Webber? They need to re-do this cd.
Terrific, except for...........2000-01-08
The CD only had one problem. Where's Annie? It's one of the best musicals out there with some of the best songs. Where's TOMORROW or HARD KNOCK LIFE? Other than that, it's a great CD
I LUV this CD.......1999-12-27
This CD (and her new one THE ONLY OTHER BROADWAY CD YOU'LL EVER NEED) contains some of the the greatest hits of the broadway musicals, from the very beguinning to this years smash hits. I knew very little of the songs when I got it, and now I know them all by heart! Enjoy!

This CD may not be the only Broadway CD you'll ever need because it leaves out songs from many high profile and popular musicals, but it does have a wide variety from what RCA Victor produced. It is a nice CD with some sound choices of music ... I enjoy listening to it.

Great For Newcomers.......2005-04-13
As an 18 year old univeristy student i would have to rate "The Only Classical Cd You'll Ever Need" as excellent. I dont know much about classical music but i was able to recognize almost every song and able to appreciate the music. Classical music is excellent to study to when i am up late for an exam and amazing to calm down to will i am simply resting. For anyone who has never been interested in classical music i would recomend this CD as a great start to an appreciation for an amazing genre of music.
Classical for Complete Beginners.......2004-07-17
If you're totally and completely new to the genre, this is a fairly good cd, strictly for the purpose of getting to know the popular and familiar classics that everyone knows, but can't place. However.
I found the recording of some of the tracks to be of pretty poor quality, especially the Swan Lake waltz. It sounds as though it were recorded during dinner - lots of talking, clatterinig dishes, and overall movement in the background that's very distracting. I also found the Air on the G string, track two, to be what I would call an okay performance. You can definitely find better recordings of these and a few other tracks.
Also, if you really want to delve wholly into classical music, not just listen to the popular few, try a cd that also encompasses opera, and more "modern" classical music, such as Gershwin.
So, as I've said, for the absolute beginner it's alright, but try to find these same tracks and a few additions on another cd with better quality, and it would be your money better spent.
There's a much better "The Only ...." album . . . ........2004-01-24
When you assert a title like the above you should deliver. Another almost identically titled album does much better. I offer details about that recording below, revised from my review on the Amazon.uk web site of "The Only Classical Album You'll Ever Need", by Slatkin and others, on the Classics label.
"I'm a classical music activist and an advocate for imaginative ways to reverse classical's decline. From this standpoint 'The Only Classical Album . . .' demonstrates first-rate creative showmanship and sophistication on the part of its producers. The album does more than just stimulate impulse purchase. The outrageously inspired title was obviously designed to attract newcomers to classical. Having lured the uninitiated, a wrong start on the first track could be the last heard. The inspired choice of Orff's primal rhythms in Carmina Burana as an opener probably breaks stereotypes people may have about classical. Luscious, delicate ballet music by Delibes creates an abrupt but artful change of pace. Then follow all-meat-and-no-potatoes romantic masterpieces in the Dvorak 9th Symphony (appropriately performed by a Czech orchestra) and the Grieg Peer Gynt Suite. The album includes popular classic hits like the Pachelbel Canon and Albinoni Adagio, but embraces diverse styles and less common classics such as the Spartacus Suite by Khatchaturian, and Bizet's the Pearl Fishers (opera). Toward the end come full and unchopped performances of core classical repertory like the Bach instrumental suites and Vivaldi violin concerti (in resonant living-tradition style, led by James Galway). This is a superb present for musically-inclined newcomers to classical. More experienced listeners can relax and enjoy masterly programming and fine performances of great classics."
Well not exactly but great for newcomers............2003-08-31
This CD is excellent for introducing classical music to those unfamiliar with the genre. This is a collection of the most popular classical tunes that you have heard everwhere but don't recognize by name. Use this CD for what it is...a stepping stone.
No, the title lies a viscious lie........2003-02-18
It has some very decent stuff, though mainly just the most popluar things. Get it if your starting out listening to classical. Otherwise, youll own all the songs anyway most likely.

Familiar but fresh........2007-06-15
My wife first heard this album and told me about it because I am both a Beatle's fan and a lover of good jazz. On several of these tracks the song was instantly recognizable and on some it took longer. The musicianship is outstanding and I thought the arrangements were creative and enjoyable. Easy listening and fun.
Always listenable, sometimes remarkable.......2007-04-08
By and large, Beatles covers are a dreadful lot.
They tend to follow one of two paths: a one dimensional transposition of melody performed over standard charts or noodling by small combos whose self indulgence rarely resolves itself in a satisfying statement of the melody.
Truly transcendent reinterpretations like those by jazz pianists Brad Mehldau and Fred Hersh are sparse.
The group BeatleJazz--consisting of Brian Melvin on drums, David Kikoski on piano, and Larry Grenadier on bass--has devoted itself exclusively to performing Beatles pieces. This, their fourth outing, is at worst pleasant and listenable. At its best, it is remarkably good.
Joined by Toots Thielemans on harmonica, Richard Bona on vocals and electric bass, and Joe Lovano on saxophone, this collection succeeds best where it takes the greatest liberties.
Some pieces, like Fool on the Hill and The Night Before, fall into the pervasive category of pedestrian covers. All You Need is Love, featuring vocals by Richard Bona, is similarly pleasant but forgettable.
The standouts include Lady Madonna, which defeats expectation at every turn and demands repeated listening and even analysis. In the midst of bold liberties and interpretations, the piece returns to the peg of a signature phase before launching back out on trajectories that take it to rapturous experimentation on the edge of time signatures and sonority.
Also notable is the trio's treatment of I Want You. The dark Beatles original seems an unlikely candidate for the transition to jazz ensemble. More improbable still is the group's decision to underpin the tune with a funky little backbeat. It works.
The Continuing story of Bungalow Bill shows Joe Lovano to his best advantage and the Beatles at their least recognizable. When the theme finally appears, it's almost a taunt, a deft sleight of hand before the music disappears up the sleeve again.
This album is a gamble for both Beatle fans and jazz fans alike. But there's something here that will seduce the radicals on both sides of great divide.

Ahhh, the 80's..........2007-06-27
So I've been slowly rebuilding my music collection with music I used to listen to as a teen - grew up in the 80's - and I almost totally forgot about Rick Astley! What a great CD! Typical 80's dance music - almost slow techno?!?!? But his voice! Gotta love it! Most of the songs are a little dorky - but still a load of fun to listen to - wish he's put out something new - again, great voice! Love Rick Astley! Dig the CD!
Editorial Review.......2006-11-06
"In the '80s and '90s, England's dance-music team Stock, Aitken & Waterman was often accused of being too slick for its own good, and favoring style over substance. But the producers/songwriters (also known for their work with Dead or Alive and Samantha Fox) should definitely be proud of their work on fellow Briton Rick Astley's often captivating debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody. While the high-tech production is very '80s, Astley's soul/pop/dance music approach is very much a production of the '70s -- sort of the Average White Band meets Philly soul/disco meets Tom Jones. The best dance music works both on and off the dance floor, and this certainly holds true on such slick yet gritty fare as 'Together Forever,' 'Never Gonna Give You Up,' and 'Don't Say Goodbye.' There are a few weak moments -- the lackluster 'No More Looking for Love' being a glaring example -- but overall, this CD proved Astley to be a welcome addition to the British R&B scene. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide" [refers to 1987 Album Release Date, RCA Label]
a smash hit.......2006-04-13
Absolutely brilliant, from the SAW factory, Rick astley shines out in this record. With a voice that does not match his face, Rick Astley is my fav. Delivering such smash hits like "Never gonna give u up", "Whenever u need somebody"&"Together forever"
this album is a must keep for every Astley fan(like me).
I have the album on tape, and I listen to it as much as I can, my favourite ones being the tremendously funky" Whenever u need somebody" , "No more looking for love" & " Nevergonna give u up"
Astley songs do make way for the dance floors, and his ballads do touch hearts!!
THE MUSIC AND THE VOICE R FABULOUS
and I dont listen to Astley at nights coz then I cannot sleep-
the songs keep playing in my head all night
extremely relaxing.......2005-07-21
i dont have a long review to write cus the others have put it beautifuly already,i agree with others that ricks deep voice never got the credit it fully deserved..this album is really relaxing to listen to at home or whenever...i love the song "it would take a strong man"he really uses his voice in that one..whenever you need somebody is a fave of mine also as well as never going to give you up!!i would recommend anyone to have this one added to your library if you dont already have it
More than just a late 1980s Manufactured "Disco King".......2005-06-21
There are a lot of reasons why I consider the way Rick Astley burst on the music scene in 1988 with his debut album "Whenever You Need Somebody". The 1980s music landscape had undergone a major change. The early 1980s pop music sound started out as a Synth-Pop sound, but by the late 1980s transformed to a more "natural" guitar-laden sound. It was during this time that even Heavy Metal music was becoming mainstream. As the 1980s started, the Disco craze had already subsided and the backlash on Disco had begun. In reality, Disco really morphed into Dance Club music and there always was a niche for Dance Club music in the 1980s. However, by 1988 even Dance Music was beginning to take a secondary role on the pop-music scene to the more "natural guitar-laden" sound. But along comes a British Baritone named Rick Astley - who would take the music world by storm with a string of chart topping hits. The thing is - his chart toppers were defying a lot of what was happening on the music scene. For the most part, it was a Synth-Pop sound - and on the charts it was the closest thing that had been seen to classic 1970s Disco. Overall, Astley would give the British Invasion one last push in the U.S. Being that Astley's sound and style was a bit like a fish out of water back in 1988, it's no surprise that his burst on the music scene would be short-lived. While Astley's sound can be considered to be manufactured and to a large extent this is true - there are some clear signs on "Whenever You Need Somebody" that Astley is able to reach beyond the manufactured walls that were created for him.
For the most part, there is a clear dividing line on the songs on this album. Four of the songs are songs that Rick Astley wrote or co-wrote. There are five songs written by the combination of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. There also is a cover of Edward Hayman and Victor Young's "When I Fall in Love". It was the songs written by Stock, Aitken, and Waterman that made up the Rick Astley sound that took the music world by storm. In other words - much of this was the sound that seemed to give Disco one last push. For the most part, this is embedded in the hits "Never Gonna Give You Up", "Together Forever", and "It's Gonna Take a Strong, Strong Man". This was also found in the songs "Whenever You Need Somebody" and "Don't Say Goodbye". While these are all catchy songs, the only thing I found of substance to these songs was Astley's terrific baritones. For the most part - the music in these songs was what I consider "manufactured". The music in these songs was heavily synthesizer-laden - and it consisted of a drum machine. If you extracted Astley's voice off of these songs - you wouldn't hear much more than what I would term "filler music". While "Never Gonna Give You Up" and "Together Forever" were the two #1 hits in the U.S. - I felt that "It's Gonna Take a Strong, Strong Man" and "Don't Say Goodbye" were the two songs that took much better advantage of Astley's vocals.
What clearly surprised me on this album was "the other side of the fence" - the songs that were written by Astley. While these songs were not as catchy as the Stock, Aitken & Waterman numbers, the Astley songs were better songs from a musical perspective. These songs don't abandon the synthesizer-laden sound at all - but I think they are clearly better in both the music and the lyrics. The first of the Astley penned songs is "The Love Has Gone". This song has a clear Rhythm and Blues sound to it. I can't say Astley was able to pull off the R&B vocals perfectly - but he does have his moments in the song. He does a very good job at penning an R&B sound - so he deserves credit for that. Astley does a far superior job with the both the R&B sound and vocals on "Slipping Away". This is a song that was penned by Astley alone. While again Astley relies on a Synthesizer-laden sound, he does bring in some horns and this supplements the song beautifully. There is a terrific trumpet solo midway through the song. There are also some nice background vocals on this song. On "You Move Me", Astley again reaches for the Rhythm and Blues sound. This song almost has a Luther Vandross feel to it. Once again, I can't say that Astley pulls the R&B vocals off perfectly, but somehow he finds a way to make it work. This also seems to be the best song from a lyrical standpoint on the collection. There are some nice background vocals that provide the perfect compliment to Astley. On "No More Looking for Love", this is probably the one Astley penned song that sounds like the Stock, Aitken, and Waterman sound. This was probably the weakest of the Astley penned tracks, but again Astley uses his baritones to make this song work.
It's the last song that really made me realize that Astley is well-rounded musician. On Hayman and Young's "When I Fall in Love", we see a new side to the Astley baritones - crooning! Astley sounds completely different, but to me it was no surprise Astley was able to pull this off. His vocals are what dominated many of the songs on this album - and this is a necessary ingredient as a crooner.
After this album, Astley would begin to take his career in different directions and look at things a bit more artistically. Whether you like what he did after this album or not, this album shows the signs that Astley could do this. It might not be the strongest album, but still is worth checking out.
