5 out of 5 stars short stories to music..........2007-05-14

Gretchen has always been one of our best songwriters. Lucky that she's also been the most affecting interpreter of her own compositions. BURNT TOAST AND OFFERINGS adds another masterful collection of gorgeous, smart songs to her impressive catalog. She sounds like no one else. She writes like no one else. She's effusive with words yet spare in delivering them. The palette of instruments is exquisite: her and Doug Lancio's great guitars, subtle and moving use of strings, and thrilling appearances of an accordion, a concertina and a pennywhistle. But the heart, the joy and the tears start with her words--sung so poignantly with lots of quiet spaces between them for the listener to contemplate.

from "The Way You Move Me:"

YOU LEFT YOUR WORDS
ALL ACROSS MY MEMORY
YOU LEFT YOUR MARK
LIKE A BURNING BRAND
YOU LEFT YOUR FINGERPRINTS
ALL OVER ME
AND NOW YOU'RE EVERYWHERE I AM

IF I CRIED A THOUSAND TEARS
IF I LIVED A THOUSAND YEARS
I COULD NEVER FIND A WAY TO MAKE YOU SEE
I'LL NEVER UNDERSTAND THE WAY YOU MOVE ME

from "This Town:"

THIS TOWN IS A LOT LIKE ME
SADDER AND WISER THAN IT USED TO BE
A LITTLE SPRAWLED OUT, A LITTLE RUN DOWN
I WONDER WHAT'S GONNA BECOME OF THIS TOWN

ALL I WANNA DO TONIGHT IS KISS YOU IN THE STREET
SWAYING TO THE BEAT OF A RUSTY RADIO
ALL I WANNA DO IS FEEL YOUR ARMS AROUND ME TOO
PULLIN ON MY BODY LIKE AN UNDERTOW

THIS TOWN IS A LOT LIKE ME
A LITTLE COAT OF PAINT AND SOME TLC
AND SHE'LL LIGHT RIGHT UP IF YOU COME AROUND
YOU KNOW THAT YOU NEVER WANNA LEAVE THIS TOWN

BURNT TOAST AND OFFERINGS is filled with moments like these. Songwriting and the singer delivering the song don't get much better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding country singer-songwriter.......2005-05-17

Gretchen emerged in the mid-nineties as one of Nashville's finest songwriters. She has had many big country hit via other people's recordings of her songs but has never made it as a solo singer despite some brilliant recordings including this, her second album.

It's not difficult to see how Gretchen has made it as a songwriter - the lyrics are inspired. In the opening track (Souvenirs), Gretchen complains that souvenirs are only a substitute for real things, then tells her man that she doesn't want his souvenirs but that she wants the real thing. Great stuff! That song sets the pattern for the album, which seems to be a mix of dreams and reality. Another song here (Love is a drug) contains the great line - Romeo's on the Internet searching for his Juliet. Remember, this was at the start of the new millennium was the Internet was not as popular as it is now. There are many other brilliant songs here. Who could resist songs with such titles as Love and Texaco, Picasso and me or Eddie's first wife?

This is a fascinating album. I don't know why Gretchen isn't a major star. Perhaps she doesn't want stardom with all the pressures that would bring. In any case, she certainly lives comfortably on the royalties that her songs generate. Just occasionally, she releases an album full of her own songs, so that we can enjoy hearing her own versions of a few of her creations. This is one of them. If you enjoy contemporary country music, give Gretchen a listen.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect record for last thing at night.......2004-06-23

Gretchen Peters' self-titled cd from 2000 is easily my favourite record. From the masterly first note of 'Souvenirs' you are in the hands of a perfect artist: you are taken on a quest for the Promised Land, the perfect world, the realisation of your ideals, the real thing -- and the journey is achingly beautiful. Every song surprises with a new perspective on the American dream of freedom and the pursuit of happiness, even if it's only the delusion that you can truly own a Picasso, and we are dropped at the end of all the album's roads onto a street at night with a band playing a plaintive hymn to life, 'Revival'. You have heard two of the most moving love songs ever, you have been made to think both of how robust and frail humans can be, how wise and yet how deluded we are, and how change and reaching out are what make us fully human, which is debatable, I know. If you truly listen to this record you will not find another worthy of following it, so it's the perfect record for last thing at night. If you are truly wise, this is the only record you'll ever need again.

4 out of 5 stars Country With Class.......2001-10-26

Gretchen Peters' self-titled CD is a class act! Her songwriting is strong; her singing is beautiful and sincere; and the production and arrangements are first rate. "Souvenirs" is a great country pop opener, a wonderful road song, "I've been searching for the promised land, but it's just another neon come-on roadside stand." Tight hooks and a great chorus highlight the second track, "Superman would always win the fight, everyone would always do what's right, and I'd always be your girl in a perfect world." A slower track comes in "I Don't Know," "...whether I'm hurting or healing." The reverb is turned up high on the guitar on "Love & Texaco" which has one of Peters' best vocals, equal parts country soul and fragility. "Love Is A Drug" is popping country rocker. "Like Water Into Wine" is a slow burn with expressive vocals, if someone lacking a distinctive melody. On "Eddie's First Wife" Gretchen sounds a bit like a country Alanis Morrisette with background vocals from a Joni Mitchell-soundalike. It's a loping tune about changing partners. "Picasso & Me" is slow and pretty. Another strong classic road song is "Lillies of the Field," a thumping ballad with a gorgeous melody. "Lillies of the field, they neither reap nor sew, I wanna buy me a Winnebago and a map of Mexico." "Waiting for Amelia" is a midtempo upbeat tune, "Come on Amelia, you've got this battle won; only angels fly into the sun." "Revival" closes the CD with churchlike piano chords and strings, "If God can forgive me, baby, why can't you?" This CD is country with class; one that you'll enjoy listening to again and again!

5 out of 5 stars She has got me hooked!.......2001-07-31

After buying her previous album "Sercert of Life" (which you should also buy) I became and avid Gretchen Peters fan. I would scan the liner notes on ever album I bought looking for her writing credits to be listed. Finally, she released her follow up album..and it was worth the wait!

It is exciting to hear a songwriter interrupt her own songs. Gretchen is not only a great songwriter, shhe also has one of the most wonderful voices in country music. Her ability to evoke emotions in her songs is phenominal!

Some of the stand out tracks on the CD are Souvenirs, I Don't Know, Love Is A Drug, and Eddie's First Wife

Order it (and her first album "Secret of Life") Today!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Poetry & Emotion.......2001-07-12

Gretchen Peter's latest is pure poetry. No one else could cover such a wide range of topics in such a intelligent, emotional way. From young, optimistic love to love as an addiction to Amelia Earhart, the range of experiences on this CD is exceptional. The highlight may very well be the inspiration close, "Revival."

If you're a country music lover, you'll recognize a few of these songs as they were recorded by other artists.

Gretchen Peters is a rare treasure. You may wonder why she's not a bigger name, but are thankful she has never sold out and continues to deliver from her heart. If you enjoy stories set to music, you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars best songwriting of the current day-.......1999-07-25

This CD has it all.. it is deeply introspective, from so many points of view, it reflects life in different lights that aren't thought of every day-the best song on this in my opinion is Circus Girl, this is one example of the amazing aura that Gretchen creates throughout this album. Everyone needs a copy!!

5 out of 5 stars It made me reflect on life and its many meanings........1999-04-20

I loved this album-i had only seen it reviewed as a country album, which didn't do it justice, because this couldn't be put into a specific genre, in my opinion. Every word on this album is so deeply thought out, and the vocals show that Gretchen really put that amount of feeling into it too...i recommend this to anybody who wants to sit back and relax and just listen to a great album with lots of amazing stories.

5 out of 5 stars Whimsical and touching "slices of life".......1999-02-18

Isn't it great when you come across a new artist whom you know will become one of your favorites? For me, Gretchen Peters is one of these. If you like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Cheryl Wheeler, Beth Nielsen Chapman, and Eliza Gilkysen, you will probably like her too. I'm glad this CD has been out for awhile. Hopefully that means there's a new one due in the very near future.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful and thoughtful lyrics. i want more.......1998-08-28

The lyrics are wonderful and thoughtfull. I want another album of the same caliber, please.

The Secret Of Life is one of the strongest releases I have heard in a long time. Gretchens ability to communicate an idea or emotion is amazing and her vocals are truly beautiful. If you like well written material sung by one who is well versed in evoking thought and feeling, this ones for you.

5 out of 5 stars The "Love and Texaco" girl is back........2004-11-24

It's been four years since Gretchen's last cd. She's back with a wonderful collection of songs and in superb voice. Such irony that she records in Nashville, writes rings around most of those "composing" there and then has to release the album in the UK. No matter. She's here and deserves heaps of attention and success. A gorgeous collection of songs. Gretchen perfectly combines the personal touches of the best singer/songwriters with the savvy of a pop song writer. Relatively brief, the songs hit many poetic and emotional highs. "This Used to Be My Town" and "If Heaven" are archetypal Peters compositions filled with concrete touches and lovely metaphors. "Germantown" has so much atmosphere you can feel it surround you. Superb use of instruments throughout--especially the accordion, soprano sax, delicate piano, harmonica and a cello and mandolin among other strings.

"If heaven was a hour it would be twilight when the fireflies start their dancin' on the lawn..."

"If heaven was a town it would be my town on a summer day in 1965..."

"If heaven was a pie it would be cherry cool and sweet and heavy on your tongue..."

"If heaven was a train it'd be a fast one to take this weary traveler round the bend..."

If heaven was a song, it would be a Gretchen Peters song...

4 out of 5 stars So far so good..........2006-12-31

I just downloded the track "American Tune" by Gretchen Peters, from I-Tunes. Although Paul Simon wrote the original, I think Gretchen Peters did it better. I rarely like covers of songs and very few ever come close to the original, but she knocked this one out of the park. She opens the track by saying she thought about this song after 9/11, and I always wonderd why Paul Simon didn't perform it right after 9/11-instead performing "The Boxer"on SNL. I always felt that was the wrong choice. Anyway, a truly beautiful remake. I look forward to hearing the rest of this album and giving another star.

5 out of 5 stars This fine lady never fails to amaze me!.......2006-01-07

Being a Douglas Adams reader, I thought the secret of life was 42 . . . ha ha ha . . . until I learnt of this lovely lady! Gretchen Peters is someone I discovered one morning at work back in April, driving the truck and suddenly on BBC Radio 2, this beautiful song called ON A BUS TO ST CLOUD comes on. I just pulled over by the side of the road in tears thinking WHO IS THIS? And my prayers were answered! This classic Peters track features on this CD, along with many other of her favorites such as I AN'T NEVER SATISFIED, the acoustic folky CIRCUS GIRL which is another tender one that wil rip your heart out, all about being a performer on the road and how people can rush you by too quick to become real friends, ROOM WITH A VIEW, an uptempo country rocker about being content with what you have in life and making a point that there is definitely more to this life we have than making money. The title track THE SECRET OF LIFE also carries this theme; these days it's more relevant than ever, as many people crave the lifestyle of so-called celebrites. WHEN YOU ARE OLD, like other tracks on the CD, has some top piano playing by Barry Walsh, who also performed on Beth Nielsen Chapman's great SAND AND WATER. Another ballad that just makes me weep. Gretchen is also a lovely person and is very kind to her fans indeed; I met her after a concert in Bristol, UK, last September(2005) and she was simply wonderful to talk to. If you like artists like Beth NC, Faith Hill and Trisha Yearwood, I recommend Gretchen Peters with all my heart, you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars exquisite.......2002-08-05

never reviewed anything before but felt this one deserved the effort. Not only beautiful music but well recorded which is becoming incresingly rare in this micro system orientated world.
This is the one studio CD I would pick as giving the closest reproduction to hearing the artist live. Endless hours of enjoyment to date.

5 out of 5 stars A great songwriter proves she's also a great artist........2001-06-29

Gretchen Peters has written many great songs and also many hits to some of Nashville's most famous artists, but, unfortunately, she's not very well known as an artist. She has a, not perfect, but characteristic and very beautiful voice. And the songs are very good. Also the weakest song, "I Ain't Ever Satisfied" (the only song on the album she didn't write or co-write), is good and a potential hit single. The rest of the songs are all as good as the best ones on many albums of the artists who have sung Gretchen's songs. One of the first of Gretchen's songs I heard was "On a Bus to St Cloud". Her own version is even better than Trisha Yearwood's. It's a very beautiful song, but not the best song on the album. All of the songs are high standard and there are no fillers.

There is no doubt that Gretchen Peter's is one of the best songwriters in Nashville, maybe in the world, and she is also a very good singer. If you like music with good melodies and lyrics - Buy this album! I can almost promise you that you will love it and play it a lot. It's worth every penny. With better promotion, this album could easily be a best seller. It's better than most best sellers. It's probably one of the best albums, at least debuts, of the last decade.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing debut CD, now with bonus song.......2001-06-19

This is the new reissue of Gretchen Peters' debut album, "The Secret Of Life," with one bonus track. The tracks are: 1. Waiting for the light to turn green 2. Border Town 3. I Ain't Ever Satisfied 4. I Was Looking For You 5. On A Bus To St. Cloud 6. Over Africa 7. The Secret Of Life 8. A Room With A View 9. Circus Girl 10. When You Are Old 11. Independence Day. Several of these songs were later recorded by other artists and became hits...you will probably recognize Faith Hill's "Secret Of Life", Martina McBride's "Independence Day" and "When You Are Old", and Trisha Yearwood's "On A Bus To St. Cloud". Gretchen Peters has a sweet soprano voice that is clear and strong, and all the songs could fit equally in the pop, rock, folk, or country vein. If you like Sara Evans, Linda Rondstadt, or Martina McBride you should love this CD. There's a reason why copies of this cd were ...on ... when it was out of print...find out for yourself what you've been missing!

I have just recently seen Gretchen Peters perform at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in Australia. I thought her voice was just fantastic and her music was great. I had never heard of her before and just happened to come accross her and thought she was really good. If she ever came out here again I would see her again. I can't wait to get this CD so I can listen to her at home.
