Previously unreleased studio album is a 'lost' recording from 1986 while Hackett and Steve Howe were still running the guitar 'supergroup' GTR. Featuring the sort of pounding rock tunes that should have been featured on GTR's abortive second album. Guests include Brian May (Queen), Ian Mosley and Pete Trewavas (Marillion), Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann's Earthband) and Bonnie Tyler. 2000 release. Standard jewel case housed in a slipcase.

Bad Brains have always been rather tough to figure out, even as their influence extends across several realms of rock. Their interests in hardcore, reggae, and metal don't always gel into a cohesive overall sound, but on this long-awaited new album they are relentlessly pursuing all of their interests with a nearly flawless new focus. Somehow, Bad Brains make songs of different and seemingly incompatible styles work on the same album. Nobody else could sound even remotely believable jumping from hardcore punk to dub reggae to anthemic metal in successive songs. The band's always complicated lynchpin H.R. sounds rejuvenated and his lyrics and vocals have found a strong (but still as nearly-unhinged as ever) focus around Rastafari. Earl and Darryl jump from style to style flawlessly, and Dr. Know continues his savage mutations of every guitar style known to man. The band's diverse interests are probably combined most evenly in the opener "Give Thanks and Praise." "Jah People Make the World Go Round" is a high-flying slab of metal, and especially punishing hardcore workouts are found in "Expand Your Soul" and "Let There be Angels (Just Like You)." Meanwhile, Bad Brains lay down dub-inflected reggae like the best of the Jamaican masters in "Natty Dreadlocks 'pon the Mountain Top," "Jah Love," and the surprisingly sinuous "Until Kingdom Comes." And finally, the Bad Brains attack climaxes in the sinister and insistent "Universal Peace," the apocalyptic music of which belies the title perfectly. [~doomsdayer520~]

I am as big of fan of the Bad Brains as you're going to find, going back to the early 80's. In fact, to this day, the best show I have ever seen was the Bad Brains in 1984 in San Francisco. So, when this release came out, I was totally pumped and picked it up the on the release day. Unfortunately, this CD just hasn't clicked for me. As others have said, it's almost as if the band is trying to make one record and HR is trying to do something else. Lyrically, it's what we would expect: Religious undertones and positive messages. On the punk songs, the music is fast, although somewhat sloppy. The production by Adam Yauch is decent, although fairly straightforward and simple. The vocals, however, are 2 or 3 tempos below the music and there are heavy effects on the vocals, including delays up the wazoo, which just get silly. In one way I respect what the band is trying to do, but they just don't seem to mesh with one another.

The band is on fire for the hardcore tracks, which definitely recall the ROIR sessions. HR, however, opts out of the rapid-fire delivery of yore and is content to repeat mantras or hang back and let the delay do its thing. It's evident that he's more into the reggae, which to my ears is the best the band has ever issued. Adam Yauch's production lends itself well to the reggae tracks-- filling them out with clavinet, brass, B-3, and other choice funky reggae and dubby spice. The reggae tracks sound so good that I'd almost rather hear the band do a whole album of them next time out (if there is a next time out). While HR sounds good on the smokin' rock tracks, it's obvious that he'd rather slowly and soulfully praise Jah than sing "Pay to Cum."

This is a fanatastic album from a band who never truly got thier due. They have influenced countless musicians(See 90% of Punk bands) and they have undeniable chemistry. Like Jenifer said "When Earl clicks those sticks, the synergy comes alive!!! So many bands search for a sound that is thiers alone and only a few achieve that goal. Bad Brains should be at the top of the list of those that succeeded. Thier music is thier recipe not trace paper (See 91% of bands out now). When I was listening to "Build a nation" I was amazed. If you play thier debut and than play this record, its like no space of time has passed. It feels vibrant, alive, energetic, and the grooves ebb and flow and throb. Sometimes the music kicks in high gear other times it just chills in waves, crashing and rolling against your lucky ears.

I have the utmost respect for the Bad Brains and I am truly grateful for this latest offering from a group of guys who are without equals. Jah loves them indeed!!!

And if you heard that one with "Banned in DC," "Pay to Cum," "Sailin' On" and the rest of the tracks on it, you KNOW what a ringing endorsement that is of this slab of wax. It's so fantastic to see the Brothers Hudson playing with Daryl and Dr. Know again. Hardcore Heroes are Hard to Find.

Project 86. Long time listener, long time review writer. To put it bluntly this band has a butt that just won't quit. The band has taken me through a surge of rabid emotions through their long career. They have surprised me, bored me, and come back to win me over time and time again. I enjoyed "..and the rest will follow" but something was missing. It seemed to pale in comparison to the emotionally charged "Songs to burn your bridges by." Rival Factions took me completely by surprise with its electronically charged synth beats. Andrew's blatantly melodic vocal rhythms. Its almost as if this was the record "truthless heroes" aspired to be. A more accessible sound that didn't sacrifice so many of the bands excellent sounds.

The band is comforable with their new found ability to go almost anywhere at this point. You can always count on Andrews deeply meaningful lyrics which range from political, sarcastic, humerous, and allegorical. With every listen this record is villianously infectious. It's guilt free 80s inspired dark synth metal for the masses as only Project 86 can bring it. The perfect record for new fans. Even for a band on their 6th release.

First spin around, and I was like "WHAT, WHO, WHERE, WHEN, WHAT (again)"
Second spin around, and I was like "WHAT, HMMMMMMMM"
Thrid spin around, and I was like "YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

All, that I can say is that I love this album. I would put it #2 or #3 in the list. I still love Drawing Black Lines first, and this one is fighting with Music To Burn your Bridges By for second.

All, I know is that I cannot wait to see them in concert again. The energy on the CD is the same as the stage and that is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Weird and I like it..........2007-06-27

I was surprised like everyone else (no one saw this coming believe me) when I heard some of the new tracks and the samples. After listening to the cd one time through I discovered how creative, catchy and intense the songs were. It was still Project 86, but totally evolved. Things that you hardly hear in other Project albums such as lots of synth, guitar solo's, alternate vocals (lots of singing but also high pitch screeching which I have never heard Andrew Schwab do, awesome).

Here is my appreciation of the songs individually:

Evil 10/10: The first time I heard this songs I thought I was listening to Queens of the Stone Age, and apart from the synth solo it it is reminiscent of their sound. The groovy rythm and atmosphere of this song are wat make it really good. If you listen to it too much, believe me it will not leave your head. What works really well is that in the chorus you hear two vocals: one singing the melody while the other voice shouts the lyrics.

Put your lips to the TV 8/10: After the deceptive and cheesy piano intro (did I forget to add that there is a lot of humor on this album and it's not only in the lyrics ;-)) the song kicks off with an old-school guitar riff, followed by a more typical Project 86 verse after which the incredibly catchy chorus grabs you by the throat with beautifully desperate sounding vocals from Schwab. To top it off we hear a solo from Randy that sounds pretty basic but works very well in the song as a bridge.

The Forces of Radio have thrown a viper into the rythem section 10/10: This song is awesome lyrically and musically. The things that stand out on this track are the drums, they build up really well to the different parts of the song and Andrews vocals are the best on the album, including aggressive gnarling and snarling in the verse and gut wrenching vocals in the verse.

Molotov 7/10: This song is good although it is not my favorite on the album. The coolest thing about the song is the 'Truthless Heroes-esque' lyrics that criticize modern culture for being all about the party and less about what counts in life. The keyboards play a big role in this song and are always haunting in the background and sometimes on the foreground. The song has a cool ending with Schwab adding extra vocal layers over the melody giving it a very full sound.

Slaves to Liberty 9/10: The lyrics are incredibly positive and kind of remind me crazily enough of 'Lean on Me' but the rock version haha. Again we have a very retro-rock intro riff. I especially like th driving bass on this one. The best way to listen to it is driving on the highway at full speed, you will not be able to stop. Lots of energy and groovy rythm are the signature of this song.

Pull me closer, Violent Dancer 8/10: Think "My Will Be a Dead Man" but then with synthesizers. The vocals are creepy in this song and the synth effect in the chorus sounds like they ripped it off of a classic horror movie. I love the way the synths and guitar blend into a melancholic and dreamy cocktail. The synths are the highlight of this song all around.

Illuminate 6/10: This song is not bad in fact it's really catchy, but it does not possess the intenseness of the other songs. I wouldn't call it a filler but it is the one song that I'm still not incredibly excited over although it does grow on you.

The Sanctuary Hum 9/10: The verse of this song sounds like something that fits well into the Truthless Heroes era, which I really liked. The opening riff actually reminds me of Projects first cd a little. The vocals first sound like what Schwabs voice evolved to on ...And the rest will follow. The verse has Randy and Schwab dueting to a very mellow and dark background. This song is about abuse, church and truth an explosive mixture but then again Project 86 is never afraid of venting thir opinions. Expecially the lyrics in the chorus are very provacative: "God save us, from your chosen ones" It srips in sarcasm and yearning for justice. Beautiful.

Caveman Jam 10/10: When I first heard the name of this song I thought it was a joke, but when i saw it on the actual tracklisting I freaked. Now a little while later it is my favorite song. The fuzzy guitars, the sarcastic lyrics, the high pitched synth building up just before the chorus and erupting into a sonically eery sound, the rythmically hammering vocals in the verse. I'm not a dancer but I can easily see a room go crazy on this vibe and at the same time I could see a rockers rocking out to it, it's that versatile.

Normandy 8/10: This song is again very different from the other songs. The lyrics are some of the best on the album. It is very melodic and not really in your face. It is a cool closer and very fitting for the album.


Verdict:
If you are a closeminded hardcore fan then don;t buy this, but if you like music and are open to innovation you will like this because it is a product of craftmansship. It is a little on the short side but the catchiness and groove of the songs compensate that. The album on the whole has some outstanding songs on it and despite some songs not being perfect the album is because they fit so well together.
This is retro-rock meets hardcore meets synths meets 80s.

4 out of 5 stars New Taste, Same Great Project 86........2007-06-26

Six albums into their career, and Project 86 show no signs of slowing down. Consistently touring, and putting out new albums every one and a half to two years, you have to admire their work ethic. And yet, with each album, they still come through with sincerity and a sense of importance intact. "Rival Factions" is possibly the band's most experimental and unique album to date, which some might view as them changing their ways to find a home on radio. But to throw around such lofty accusations is a waste of time. You won't find any semblance of emo or noisy metalcore with Project 86's newest. Just a new take on the groove heavy, ultra melodic sound we've come to love from our favorite hardcore Christians.

If "Truthless Heroes" or "Songs To Burn Your Bridges By" weren't enough indication, Project 86 are truly the most politically charged Christian band on the scene today, and aren't afraid to stand out from the pack. The great thing about this album and each one before, is that even if you don't follow their faith (I don't) you can still appreciate their message and understand the fire that drives them. From the suggestive packaging to the blistering "Slaves To Liberty," Project 86 have yet to ease up on the themes established early on in their career. If anything, it's at least more exciting than 2005's "...And The Rest Will Follow," which felt like a Project 86 re-run.

Longtime fans may feel turned off at first by the slight change of style for this album. Fact of the matter, the songs are much catchier than before and capitalize on the grooves that used to give way to some of the band's heaviest moments. "Pull Me Closer, Violent Dancer" is a stunning example of how they make a new style work gloriously in their favor. For the moments that the band shifts gears into 80's gothic-dance inspired territory, they still don't let up their signature sound, cryptic lyrics and infectious hooks. Take a listen to the synths on "Illuminate," and yet tell me this isn't just as good as what they've been doing their whole career. It puts a new spin on a tried and true sound. The only thing that truly hurts this album is that it is but a mere thirty five minutes long. It makes for one breezy listen, which is good because it's going to take a few for you to appreciate it, but one can't help but feel that the album ends just as it's getting good. But then again, you know they'll be back in another year and a half with another album, so all is well.

All and all a solid effort. This is much more lyrical than their last two. In the songs that actually had a screamo part, the voice could have been replaced with regular singing and would have been marketable by the Newboys. This is in definite contrast to "...And the Rest Will Follow" where the screamo style was needed to complete the feel. The lyric content is in line with the rest of their albums. Right now, after three listens, I put it at my fourth favorite.
Great packaging and freebee with the pre-order. On a production note, there are a few times on the album where there volume steps down for no apparent reason.
It feels sort of like they might have tried to go more commercial (although I consider that a grave accusation). But it could be the group working with different ideas. Personally, I am hoping their next effort feels more like Follow or Bridges.
Buy it, you won't regret it.

All my favorites. I can start the CD player, which is wired to speakers in every room of my house, and just let it play, along with "The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the World" and "The Most Relaxing Classical Guitar in the World." I was not really a classical music fan but I am now. I purchased this cd for my 14 year old grand-daughter, not knowing we would both enjoy the music so much. She has always enjoyed classical music along with all of the other teen music, rap, rock, country, etc.
Also, it really helped being able to listen to parts of the music before purchasing.

I first developed a taste for this music a number of years ago when my daughter started playing in the orchestra. The reason I made this purchase however, was because I have a great deal of difficulty with anxiety and I was looking for ways to find help. I love these CDs. It helps so much to sit and close my eyes and enjoy the music. The CDs are full of beautiful music.

How can it be that a recording by one of today's indisputably unequaled pianists performing some of her prime repertory--made fresh within months of her triumph in the 1965 Warsaw International Chopin Competition--could languish for decades in the vaults before its official release? Chalk it up to the exclusivity clauses of rival recording companies and legal constraints from which not even Wotan with the help of Loge could extricate himself. Thankfully this belated EMI release--recorded in a few sessions at the Abbey Road studios--is finally available.

It's a significant complement to Argerich's other accounts of Chopin on disc. From the white-hot intensity of Argerich's way with the composer, you can easily extrapolate a sense of what had recently wowed the jury in Warsaw. The Argentinean pianist undertakes the Third Sonata as a vast, big-voiced, far-reaching statement that encompasses both molten power and moments of almost unbearably intimate lyricism (listen closely to her gestures of illumination in the Largo). With a characteristically unforced spontaneity, Argerich sounds the shattering chords that launch the finale (recorded in one take); her sense of flow in the Nocturne No. 4 is a perfect mesh for the illusion of improvising that is so central to Chopin. She commands the logic--both emotional and musical--of the composer's skittish turns in the Scherzo No. 3 and crafts three of the mazurkas into perfectly chiseled character pieces. The sheer force of Argerich's personality might seem overwhelming to those accustomed to a tamer Chopin--listen to how she dives into the A-flat Polonaise--but it's always at work dusting off tired clichés and uncovering the music's expressive wealth. For those who know about Argerich's artistry, this disc is indispensable; anyone who has yet to make that enviable discovery will find it (together with the Argerich anthology in Philips' Great Pianists series) a great place to begin. --Thomas May

This Argerich Chopin performance, recorded by EMI in 1965 while she was actually under contract to DG is formidable for an artist so early in her career. Both the artistry and sound are superb and it's a shame we fans had to wait so long for this recording to appear. These Chopin performances completely justify the competition judges decision to award her the grand prize at the 1965 Warsaw International Chopin Competition. It's a collection must have!

If I had to pick a single CD to win awed admiration for Martha Argerich, this Chopin recital would be it. Only 24 when she made these long-suppressed recordings, Argerich's musicality and dazzling technqiue defy belief. Every ounce of praise for her Third Sonata is deserved--it's spontaneous, flexible, intense, by turns tender and declamatory. The most blessed quality is that she doesn't bang or harangue us--not always the case in later years. Her sense of urgency doesn't become eckless; the bursts of excitment aren't oerly explosive.

My only caveat would be for audiophiles. Although an Abbey Road studio recording, you get the feeling somewhat that Argerich is performing in a boomy hall. Also, in the loudest fortes there's mircophone shatter. For many listeners these drawbacks won't matter a whit, not in the face of an undisputed keyboard genius.

So Depeche Mode releases a singles compilation featuring only one previously unreleased song ("Only When I Lose Myself") in anticipation of a major tour. Sound suspiciously like a shameless cash-in? Sure. But The Singles, 86-98 needed to be made. This is a worthwhile purchase for casual admirers and completists alike. The two-disc set contains revamped versions of the major singles from 1986 to 1998 and a version of "Little 15" that was first released only in France. The set's "grand finale" is the live recording of "Everything Counts," from the 101 album. Although the original studio version of the "Everything Counts" single appeared on 1984's People Are People, DM fudged the chronology to justify including this astounding live recording on the album (a ploy to psych up concert-ticket buyers?). The live recording highlights the worshipful crowd applauding, cheering, and chant-singing "The grabbing hands / Grab all they can / Everything counts in large amounts" long after the song has ended. Depeche Mode does their brand of electronic music very well, with songs that are catchy and stick in the head and are a few times even emotionally evocative. This is a 2-disc compilation, with the first disc being the stronger one, probably cuz it's the one with the radio hits. But the second disc definitely has some gems too. Good stuff on disc 1:

Great CD. Practically every song on this is good and enjoyable to listen to. If you like Depeche Mode, you will most definitely like this. Depeche Mode is a great group. They have great vocals and the music is like no other. There is a reason why Depeche Mode has been around for over 20 years. Their music is top-notch.

There was no hesitation picking this one up in the record store. All the singles by Depeche Mode you've heard and loved ( excluding their latest ) are all on this one. Some tracks can get a little anoying - its always about "a question of" this and that ( you DM fans should know what I'm talking about ). But since this two disc set has all the favorites, ITS A MUST HAVE! I'm not so much of a Depeche Mode "fan" but I am pleased to own this set. You'll be just as pleased, it's just a question of whether you get this one or not. So go on and get it already!

The Singles 86>98 covers all the hits the popular synth-pop band Depeche Mode put out during this 12 year period. Included are the radio classics "Personal Jesus", "Enjoy the Silence" and "Policy of Truth" as well as more recent material like "Home", the exclusive track "Only When I Lose Myself" and a live version of the old single "Everything Counts." It seems as though this 2CD set was compiled mainly for the casual fans of the band, such as myself, but it still does a good job laying out all of the band's top work in chronological order. That said, it seems as though maybe 2 discs are a bit unnecessary - as several tracks from the second CD don't particularly hold up quite as well as those from the first. Still, this is an excellent package that showcases some of the finest work of Gore, Gahan and Fletcher.

Highlights: "Stripped", "A Question of Lust", "Personal Jesus", "Enjoy the Silence", "Policy of Truth", "Home", "Only When I Lose Myself."

This CD is just pure magic. I know that is such a cliche' thing to say, but it really is. Of course, it really won't appeal to those people who are into EXTREME LIVING...whatever the hell that means, because to me, extreme living is living close to the soul, close to the spirit, close to the Invisible Source that makes and creates all things in and out of Itself.

Debussy was a composer who lived very close to this Invisible Stream. His music reflects a gentleness and yet a strength that flows throughout each composistion. The arrangements are dreamy and mystical and allows one to go into their "inner chamber" and pray in secret to the One who knows their heart as well as their soul.

As much as I love this CD, I tend not to listen to it in the car. I once listened to it while making a routine drive to Santa Monica. The CD stopped and I had somehow missed all of my exits and ended up in Ventura...talk about being in dreamland!

It's a great CD to put in your walkman and go to an outdoor cafe' where you can sip a cafe latte and write poems to an unknown lover whose face you cannot remember, but whose gentle breath is the scent of lavendar...oh, I wax poetic...so sorry...

If you are into quiet and stillness, get this CD...it's truly a breath of fresh air in this noisy, crowded, extreme world we have to be in but not necessarily of...

This music evokes both emotions and images of life waking up in spring, even being in a magical forest where anything can happen, or floating on clouds. You can just enjoy the music and let your imagination soar or the music can take you into that trance-like state where you can access creative ideas and creative solutions to any problems - and maybe they just dissolve of their own accord.

If you like Debussy - whom I have heard called one of the progenitors of ambient music - you will love having his most inspiring and beautiful works together on one cd. These works are tranquil and serene, and yet they don't fade into the background - no matter what you are doing - because they are true art. When this cd is playing you can't help but listen and sigh. My cats love this cd, too.

Compilation CD's like this are an excellent first CD to purchase when first exploring a new composer or style of music ("Expressionism" in Debussy's case). And this Philip's "Set your Life to Music" collection is usually a sure and safe way to do that given their well thought-out selections, themes and quality recordings. This CD here contains many of the most popular, lyrical and enchanting works of the 19th-century French composer, Claude Debussy. The range of selections are diverse and satisfying: from his major solo piano works through his top chamber music (for 2-5 instruments) to the full-blown orchestral selections of great imagery and dreaminess that can transport one into another world of great serenity. (But, there are enough sudden changes in loudness and rhythm to upset any notions of perfect bliss and keep the daydreamer from falling asleep - hence the title, "for Daydreams" and not "for Bedtime" like in other offerings in this Philips' series) Regardless, this CD is an excellent introduction to Claude Debussy as well as being overall relaxing music to enrich one's life.

One interesting music history tidbit on Debussy that might interest the new listener: Even though Debussy did not like the label, his music was labeled "Expressionism" for the similarities to what the French artists like Monet were doing at the same time. In Debussy's case, his intent was to create "emotional impressions" with music that evoked specific moods and images in the mind - not unlike what the "impressionistic painters" were trying to do on canvas using pure color and form to evoke the fleeting, emotional moment of a landscape scene. "Prelude of the Afternoon of the Fawn" is a good example of this dreamy, lingering, emotive style of music.

This CD is one of the best among its classical collections. (bach for breakfast is my one of them) It puts me to any place I dream of whenever I listen to this cd. It usually brings me into outer space, or sometimes go to the sky or under the sea. You can also just sit back and relax while listening to the music. In addition, once I get mad or not calm enough, I just put this cd on and it cures my anger.
Classical music is magic.

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price.The sound quality is decent,however it is not great.This set will not provide you with the crisp,clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

Back in the '70s, the rapid development of synthesizers and electronic keyboards had a huge impact on popular music, with Isao Tomita among the leading exponents of multimedia, surround-sound events associated in Western Europe with such very different musicians as Rick Wakeman and Jean-Michel Jarre. The present disc has less grandiose aims, being a well-balanced selection of, to quote the original liner notes, "Virtuoso electronic performances of Debussy's beautiful tone paintings." It's easy to scoff at the concept behind Tomita's approach--take some of the most poetic music around and give it the consistency of aural cotton wool--yet there's no denying the skill with which he translates Debussy's soundworld, preserving the harmonic interest of the piano originals and bringing out many subtleties of texture. Inevitably the slower numbers come off best--"Clair de Lune" or "Reverie" could easily become chill-out favorites. "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," however, is not so much a travesty as a vaporization of the orchestral masterpiece. A mixed bag, but with enough musical interest to make Tomita's "sound clouds" of more than just curiosity value. --Richard Whitehouse

Released in 1974, this all electronic adaptation of works by Claude Debussy is really quite good and showcases Isao Tomita and his flair for synthesizer wizardry. I think that Isao more or less captures the dreamy and haunting mood of Debussy's compositions and also adds a bit of his own (humorous) flair here and there with some "light-hearted" synth sounds.

The music on this album was recorded entirely with a moog synthesizer although the sweeping and majestic sound of a mellotron with string setting pokes through the mix on occasion. As a big synthesizer fan, I thought it was interesting that the various settings on the moog were listed as "equipment" including things like oscillators and lowpass filters etc. This particular synthesizer was pretty versatile and a virtually infinite number of sounds could be generated, as is amply demonstrated by Isao on this album.

In addition to the works originally included on Snowflakes are Dancing, the last track was taken from his Firebird album (1976) and is another work composed largely on the moog synthesizer although other keyboards were used including a Fender electric piano and a Hohner Clavinet C.

The sound of this high performance CD is excellent and trust me, the changes in dynamics virtually leap out at you.

All in all, this is an excellent recording of electronic music by an excellent electronic composer. Highly recommended along with his 1976 adaptation of The Planets (by Gustav Holst).

During the seventies, the prog music of Yes, (early) Genesis, Renaissance, and especially Emerson, Lake & Palmer cast a hypnotic spell over legions of high school nurds such as myself. Much of what held it together was a fascination with the sounds eminating from the still somewhat new Moog Synthesizer. It wasn't long before my high school art room pals & myself began looking for anything Moog, and found quite a bit outside the rock music pantheon, most notably the 'Switched On Bach' recordings of Walter/Wendy Carlos. They were interesting, but nothing quite prepared us for the release of Tomita's 'Snowflakes Are Dancing'. Perhaps it was because the timing coincided with a 'high' point in our collective psyhedelic experimentations.... Debussy's music is already an alternative, ethereal experience in the classical world, and Tomita's choice of sounds & production techniques put this recording in a class by itself (umm... especially with a pair of good headphones). I am happy to report that, upon listening to this well produced CD release with nothing more than a cup of herbal tea, I was happily transported once again. It is one delightfully Bizarre recording. 'Highly' recommended.

Tomita was one of the early pioneers of electronic music. This CD, originally released in the 70's, was at the time a masterpiece. That was in the days of patch cords and laborious manual over dubbing, so not every cut is up to today's standars. Still, the finer pieces on this CD stand with anything ever done in the genre: luminous, melodic, and even entrancing. At its best, a magical CD highly recommended not only for the connoisseur, but for anyone who enjoys synthesized music.
