Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

3 out of 5 stars Between two extremes........2007-02-25

I was once someone who despised Yung Joc. As I listened to a large range of far more intelligent hip-hop, Joc seemed rather laughable in comparison; and to be completely honest, Joc is still a rather laughable character. However, I think a lot of hip-hop heads are taking that as far too much a negative. Like Young Jeezy and Mike Jones before him, Joc is a borderline horrible emcee, with enough charisma to cross-over to a commercial market. Joc is by no means a great rapper; he's struggling for average. However, he is quirky enough, and unintentionally humerous to appeal to hip-hop heads willing to listen to the music for fun.

Joc dropping knowledge would be blasphemous to his record label(the man IS signed to Bad Boy, after all; a label that specializes in commercial friendly hip-hop, with the only notable exceptions being B.I.G., Shyne, and G. Dep), but what he does, he does well enough to warrant him a spot in hip-hop's current market. More skilled than the likes of the Ying Yang Twins and Dem Franchize Boyz, but not nearly as talented as T.I. or Chamillionaire, Yung Joc falls into the same category as Young Dro and Young Jeezy(many 'young' emcees[no pun intended] here, eh?) as mediocre emcees who still have the ability to, at the very least, release catchy pop-oriented rap that isn't completely fodder.

Joc's the next in a long-line of coke-dealing emcees, although he's certainly no Pusha-T or Raekwon; instead, his tales of peddling are brief, and mostly focus on whatever 'glamorous' side there is to it. Beyond that, he's got cars and broads; he doesn't go any deeper than that for the most part, however, in all of this lyrical mediocrity, there are genuine flashes of potential, that show Joc may very well only be hindered by a gimmick Diddy saddled him with.

The production is, for the most part, decent. Most of it is very minimalistic, but the simplicity isn't neccessarily a bad thing. Most of the beats are catchy enough not to offend, and Joc sounds at home over them. Contrary to popular belief, most of these tracks do NOT fall under the snap category; neither snap nor crunk, they possess the same 'trap' backgrounds best examplified by T.I.'s breakthrough hit in 2003, Rubberband Man, which has since become the staple for trap-rap production.

I know a lot of people hate Joc, and even have good reasons for it; however, you can do worse(must I remind you that Bow Wow, Jibbs, and Webbie all still have careers?), and Joc still has genuine potential hidden underneath the corniness. This album isn't for the headphones, but it serves its purpose well enough.

1 out of 5 stars New Joc City: the worst place to live next to Nellyville.......2006-12-16

Yung Jocstrap is probably the worst rapper out of the south(for now)right now. Its Goin Down is the lamest club record since.....Ray J's Wait A Minute! The elementary lyrics plus the nonbeat provided Nitti(whose so-called beats all sound the same)or S****i(you be the judge)makes you scratch your head like how can people buy into this s***? I Know You See It suffers from the same flaws as Its Goin Down: Kiddie Lyrics and an Ice cream truck sounding beat plus Miss B Havin should have thrown in the towel since Bottle Action. Now for all you of saying I shouldnt judge this album based on those two songs fine. I'll judge based on these. Filler: Hear me comin, Do Ya bad(boring beat and bland lyrics about his pseudo bravado), Knock it out(juvenile sex record. The worst since Cam'ron's Suck it or not), Picture Perfect(Dumb Joc trying to teach you something? Who does he think he is kidding?), Flip Flops, Dope Boy Majic(Dope Boy Garbage), Dont Play With It(dull song with a hook that sounds exactly like David Banner's Play). Bottom Line: Definetly one on the worst albums of 2006. Childish lyrics, awkward sounding beats pretty much sum up this album. Dont waste precious time on this jocless joc. You and I know this album is dookie shoot so flip this teenage mutant ninja turtle looking motherf****r the bird and keep it moving!

1 out of 5 stars Trash.......2006-12-12

This album is almost as bad as D4L's album Down 4 Life and is worse than Dem Franchize Boyz On Top of Our Game. Yes you heard me correctly, it is even worse then On Top of our Game which is almost a miraculous feat. In other words, don't buy this trash. The odd chance you do like it I also suggest Kevin Federline's new album Playing With Fire.

1 out of 5 stars The title of this CD should've been DOPE BOY GARBAGE.......2006-12-11

Ok, 1st of all if you wanna be a rapper, DO NOT SIGN W/ BAD BOY. Ever since the late great KING OF NY "NOTORIOUS B.I.G. passed away, Puffy has been trying to make as much money of BIG as possible & exploit the dirty south by starting up Bad Boy South, & giving us such garbage as New Jock City. Anyone that knows anything about real hip hop should stay away from this crap.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great CD!.......2006-12-09

Everything about this cd is GREAT! I especially love the song "1st Time" with Marques Houston. That song is HOT! Check it out!

This is a great CD for any fan of the Boston Pops - especially those who have seen or been to their annual 4th of July performance - or for those who appreciate patriotic music. Many of the pieces they play at the Pops Goes the 4th concert are on the CD. My personal favorite is the 1812 Overture for its live cannons.

Oh what a joy to listen to one of the richest voices of our time! A truly great singing legend. Breathtaking depth and effortless power!

Don't Know. Holder had a CD of Ludwig con Beethoven! Awaiting the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars Superb! As Always, superb!.......2003-12-27

There's not enough words that can express how wonderful Miss Jessye Norman's vocal talent is. What a wonderful opera diva! I thought the George Bizet's Carmen (CD) was magnificient but then when I got this (CD), I was thrown back. The range and style in "Ave Maria" is splendid, so is "Let's Break Bread Together," "Amazing Grace," and many more songs found on this CD. Miss Jessye Norman, Ms. Leontyne Price, Miss kathleen Battle, Miss Joan Sutherland are top opera divas on my list. So you know I have a fine taste of hearing great vocals; you can't go wrong in purchasing this CD. It's a treasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Timeless.......2003-09-08

Jessye Norman is one of my favorite opera singers. I hope that she may release another CD of Gospel songs very soon. We have waited too much!!! How about to revisit Marian Andersons' Gospel recordings!!!

5 out of 5 stars Why was I such a fool?.......2003-06-17

Okay, if you look at my other recommendations, you'll see that I'm a conservative. So, before my full embrace of the classical vocal artistry, and when I was just beginning to grasp politics (I'm only 21 now), I heard a beautiful voice and rejected it because it was singing at the inauguration of Bill Clinton.

I've learned a little since then. I've learned to ignore an artists political leanings, because they don't tell you much about quality (contrast the Republican South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone with the Democrat Robert Redford). I've also learned to (sometimes) listen to the recommendations of friends. And well, after a friend heard me laud Reneé Fleming, Kathleen Battle, and Leontyne Price, she told me I needed to try Jessye Norman. So I did.

Jessye Norman here offers here own takes on many of the most-loved (i.e. trite) pieces in the religio-classical tradition. She renders one of my own favorites, "O Divine Redeemer", with great beauty. When other reviewers mention shivers on the spine, I can only nod. As a wonderful introduction to Ms. Norman, the great spirituals and hymns, or repudiation of foolish artistic discrimination, I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

I was very pleased with the CD and would recommend it to everyone.

All of Andre Rieu's music is very enjoyable to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Collection That Is Just Plain Fun.......2005-11-19

Sometimes I think the only person who is happy that Public television is financially challenged, other that certain legislators who believe that it is too liberal and the culmination of all that is evil, is Andre Rieu. Now don't get me wrong, this happy Dutch musician who models himself after Johan Straus is not a cruel or vindictive person. At least from what I can tell he's not, but let's face it. If PBS did not have financial woes, Andre Rieu, one of its favorite stars, would not have received the exposure he has, and his sales in the United States would probably be next to nothing. Of course for anyone who has ever seen one of his extravaganzas, we would be missing something enjoyable. He's musically sound and he knows how to entertain, and quiet frankly, though some classical purists may cringe at his name, I don't believe the composers whose music he uses are rolling in their graves because it's become popular once again.

Of all his concerts and CDs, I enjoy THE CHRISTMAS I LOVE the most. The jitterbug version of "Jingle Bells" shows that an old tune can produce new tricks. His arrangement of "The Holy City" (a.k.a. "Jerusalem") is almost as moving as when it is performed with a vocalist. The recording has a number of medleys that include favorites from all over Europe show how Christmas has such an international flair. For me, however, this album provides true variety. Many of the carols are not familiar to Americans, so we hear something different yet also authentic to the holiday season.

I'm surprised that there have not been other Rieu Christmas discs. He's an original musician and a consummate showman, so I'm sure there's more he could do with holiday music, but maybe he knows he has a classic with this collection and it will stand the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful; marvellous.......2000-09-30

Andre Rieu proves again he is the best of the best! I bought this CD in october 1997, a few weeks before Andre's concert In Quebec city. In this CD, you'll find all the classics of Christmas. They are well played because Andre and his orchestra know how to bring us the atmosphere of Christmas. The desing of the CD is well done. If you,re looking for good music, please try this CD You'll enjoy it. If you have the occasion to see his Christmas concert on TV, watch it. It's very beautiful.

This his not the first CD made by Andre. In 1992, he released "Spielt Die Schonten Weihnachtslieder".

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.......1999-08-18

Another wonderful Andre Rieu CD. All the Rieu recordings and videos are a breath of fresh air - a joy to the soul.

Set in dark, slickened streets and populated by a stellar ensemble cast, this adaptation of Frank Miller's hard-edged, film noir inspired graphic novels plays like comic-book-come-to-life—not surprising, as Miller is credited as Robert Rodriguez's co-director (with a bit of help from Quentin Tarantino). The soundtrack to this bleak, compelling exercise in pure noir stylism is provided mostly by director Rodriguez, with an occasional assist from past collaborators John Debney (Spy Kids and its sequel) and Graeme Revell (From Dusk Til Dawn). While their largely synth-driven cues tend naturally towards brooding atmospheric soundscapes, their tense electro-rhythms are seasoned with bracing doses of sinewy, sensual sax and dotted with the occasional bongo flourish, details that musically evoke both a shadowy humanity and the film's genre-savvy roots. Also featuring disparate, yet wholly integrated contributions from techno-house savants Fluke (the hypnotic "Absurd") and 20th century Mexican classicist Silvestre Revueltas, it's the sinister flipside to the future-jazz sheen of Vangelis' classic Blade Runner.--Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars trailer music.......2006-08-06

i listened to the servant song and i know everyone said its pretty well known that that is the song they used in the trailer, but if you listen to "broken chairs" by built to spill it really sounds like parts of the trailer music too. and its also a good song. so i would recommend trying that as well!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-01-17

Now, i loved the movie, but the soundtrack blew me away! all the songs fit the movie perfectly. However, it is missing the instrumental version of "Cells" by the Servants, which plays on the DVD title menu
so, here you go:

Is a very good soundtrack because i think that Robert Rodriguez has made a great choice with the composers and his own musical composition

While the previous reviwer was correct that Cells the trailer song is not on the soundtrack, Servant did indeed create an instrumental version and you can obtain it at this link follow the instructions it is at the Servant website so its legal and its for a limited time only!

Your Welcome ;)

4 out of 5 stars An addendum to "FangsFirst" comment.......2005-09-16

FangsFirst is absoluty correct -- trailer music is almost never on the movie's soundtrack. An interesting additional bit of trivia, however; almost all trailer themes ARE from a movie soundtrack, just from a DIFFERENT movie than the one the trailer is for!

So if you're looking for "Cells" by The Servant (the song from the Sin City trailer), take a look at the soundtrack to Transporter 2. You'll find it along with another song by The Servant. "Cells" does have lyrics to it (which aren't on the Sin City trailer), but it's still a damned good song.

Just thought I'd share that with everybody.

4 out of 5 stars City Boy anthology.......2006-12-01

A great underated band, this selection could have been better, but as a taster its ok. It does give a new listener an idea of how good they were.

2 out of 5 stars different strokes for different folks.......2006-09-04

There is (generally) a reason why bands do not get famous... they were simply not that good to begin with!

I saw City Boy warm up for UFO, it was not a good pairing. I did not care for them and teh UFO crowd did not give them a warm welcome.

5-7-0-5 did get a decent amount of airplay (at least where I grew up in Chicago) in the 1970's. The song was okay.

I bought this purely for the nostalgic aspect of being able to hear a song from my youth. I do not care for the other songs.

If City Boy was a favorite of yours then you were definelty in the minority. During their heyday, I did not see a lot of black rock concert t-shirts with "City Boy" on them!

5 out of 5 stars Los grandes desconocidos de los 70's.......2003-11-15

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS!!!.......2003-02-16

This is possibly the WORST compilation I have ever purchased. As a long time City Boy fan I am disgusted by the exclusions of such classics as "Mr. Shoes", "Summer in the Schoolyard", "Moving in Circles", "Machines", "Cigarrettes", "Mama's Boy", "The Man Who Ate His Car" just to name a few!!!!! The liner notes are completely wrong from the albums the songs came from to the personell on each album. I wonder if the band even knows about this release. The cover isn't even new. It's the "Young Men Gone west" artwork. Don't waste your money on this poor excuse for a City Boy "Anthology".....you can't call this poor representation of one of the greatest bands to come out of the '70's an anthology. Call it a ripoff!!!

4 out of 5 stars They Got Style!.......2003-01-07

One of the greatest under-appreciated Pop/Rock acts in history, City Boy first caught my attention circa 1977 with "She's Got Style" -- a "lost classic" if there ever was such a thing -- off the "Young Men Gone West" LP. Their sole U.K. Top 10 single hit "5.7.0.5." and its parent album "Book Early" ('78) were also worn out by the time I got through with them, while their later work ("The Day the Earth..." + "Heads Are Rolling") never found much favour with me due to me being otherwise occupied at the time (Punk/New Wave).

Recently, however, I had the opportunity to check all of CB's recorded work out more thoroughly and was pleasantly surprised by how well it has held up compared to much of the more generally celebrated popular music from that late '70s/early '80s era; solid musicianship, some of the tightest harmonies you're ever likely to hear, very well written songs + nearly always, ummm, "interesting" lyrics a la early Sparks -- these, duly, were CB's main strengths.

Musically, and for those who like to do that, it's tough to categorize this band. But for better or for worse, I would say at several different times they sound a little like such overall unsimilar acts as Queen, 10cc, around '80-era Rollers and the aforementioned mid-'70s Sparks -- which should say something about their overall diversity. Their first two LP's are a tad too "proggy" for my taste, but nearly always (again) "interesting" nonetheless.

Which brings us to this "Best Of" anthology-type-of-thing here. Although, as ALWAYS in such cases, I miss more than a couple of old faves ("Mr.Shoes", "Summer in the Schoolyard", Goodbye Lorelei"), it is indeed an exceptionally well compiled collection. But the biggest beef -- and that is also exactly what keeps this one from getting my full, flawless, 5 star rating -- is the sloppy packaging, the clumsy spelling mistakes and the highly inaccurate sleevenotes ("The Day The Earth Caught Fire" a U.K. Top 10 hit?! I don't think so). And althought the overall sound and (re?)mastering is good, it quite frankly escapes me why the the ending of "Mr.Shoes" -- which, lest we forget, is omitted from this collection -- is included as the beginning of "Heads Are Rolling", the next track behind it on the "H.A.R" album!! Evidently -- and in spite of managing to make this much-needed compilation sound good -- the people behind it weren't able enough to make it also sound RIGHT.

But for some people these may be just minor flaws and the main issue here is to finally have a (mostly) fine representation of City Boy available on CD. And for that we should just be grateful. As good place as any to start your exploration of this great, yet mostly unknown, band. Enjoy!
