4 out of 5 stars Great album. Not quite a "Zipless", but get it anyway........1999-05-21

A friend couldn't get into this CD and gave it to me, one of the best things I've ever been given. Vanessa always takes me to another world full of desire, wanting, and passion for a man and a woman; one positive yet dark, safe yet unfamiliar, Beautiful music, well arranged, and Vanessa's breathy voice is unexplainable. I immediately sought Zipless and after a long quest found it, which was good and bad. Good because it is even better (have to make effort to return from fantasy world now), bad because Zipless drew my attention away from Slow To Burn somewhat. Nevertheless, I am a Vanessa Daou fan for live. Now if only I could see the Black Forest video, the sexy clip on her website isn't enough!

4 out of 5 stars Very addictive.......1999-04-29

I first heard Vanessa Daou's "Two to Tango" on a local soft jazz station. I really liked it so I went out and bought the CD. It's been so long since Sade has come out with something new so I was looking for someone to take her place in my life. It took a while for me to get into some of it b/c it seemed a little pretentious but I warmed up too her style and I've become a big fan of hers. She is very smooth. I consider the second half of the album the best, with her rendition of Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain" haunting and passionate. A really good album, I listen to it all the time.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Soothing.......2000-07-31

I had hoped they would group these two songs on a single; they have such similar messages that they fall into place perfectly together. This is also an interesting single when you consider the band. It has Crash & Burn, an instrumental of C & B, and a mainly vocal remix of I Don't Care, which collectively showcases for the listener Daz's side of the creative process as well as Daniel's, and then it shows you what the two can do together: it's a beautiful thing. The best part about this single is the instrumental, which is as beautiful and soothing as the lyrics. I rather feel they destroyed the US single by cutting out almost all of the instrumental bits, probably in fear of time constraints. Those quieter moments of this song are its best though, giving you a period of rest after the emotional release of the lyrics like the calm in the eye of a storm.

    5 out of 5 stars Great song!.......2000-07-22

This is one of the best songs Savage Garden have written. It comforts the listener. I love it. Everybody should buy this.

    5 out of 5 stars Worth it........2000-07-17

Savage Garden did it again and this single is not the exception. As you can see we have two rarities in this baby besides from the title track which I adore. First, the instrumental version of the beautiful song Crash and Burn which is very soothing and a masterpiece by itself. Second, a special mix of "I Don't Care". It is rare because I must say it is the only rare track (I mean, bside songs not mixes or acoustics from album tracks) that I know is remixed. I love it. I like it just as much as I like the original version. Wow this is getting confusing. So, in synthesis, you'll love this one. Plus, it comes with a small poster. How cute. Buy it.

    5 out of 5 stars A must for collectors.......2000-04-16

    5 out of 5 stars do yourself a favor..........2004-12-16

and buy this album. I don't like hardcore. I don't like pop-punk. I don't like emo. I don't really like any of the genre you could classify this group into. But... I LOVE THIS CD. Its melodic and perfectly harmonic for the music snobs out there, and its lyrically astoounding for the poets in all of us. Music and lyrics blend to form a sort of sonic alchemy and create a true listening experience. Don't close your eyes... you may get chills.

5 out of 5 stars finch rocks dude.......2004-07-18

finch is by far one of my favorite bands, their riffs and double bass pedals add so much to perfection through silence... this song gives me chills.... the newer what it is to burn was so influential.... finch rocks, nate is awesome... end of story

    5 out of 5 stars 1,000 stars and you're still falling..........2004-05-10

There isn't enough words to say about this band and this cd...I first heard Finch when their ep falling into place was released in 2001...ever since then...I've been so hooked I can't even hardly listen to any other band...with the post-hardcore guitar riffs from Alex Linares and Randy Strodemeyer (R2K), and the thumble bass lines from Derek, and the caffinated beats from Alex Pappas, and the insane range of vocals from Nate Barcalow, Finch is a band that no one can touch, Falling into Place was an amazing ep that made What it is to Burn one of the most anticipated albums of 2002...every song on this album sounds nothing like the one before or after each other. Finch is a band that everyone should atleast give a try...there is a song on this album for everyone...from opener "New Beginnings" to the Bonus track "What it is to Burn"...this album and band is my favorite in my whole collection of cd's...and I recommend it to anyone who listens to anything from Hardcore to pop-punk...

    5 out of 5 stars A most excellent CD.......2004-04-22

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Heathen Single.......2003-12-17

The five stars are clearly for single status. This is in no way an album, and when you look at buying a single, you understand that it isn't an album.
That being said, I think this is a great single. Five tracks, all different, only one of them (Slow Burn)on Heathen itself. Pretty much what we're getting here is stuff that could have mad the "Toy" album, and well, I hope that one day that album comes out, but until then, it's single buying times, and this single is worth your money.
I personally think Shadow Man is a great song, perhaps my favorite of the single. Go get it.

4 out of 5 stars 4 great songs, one re-make.......2003-05-25

I love Wood Jackson, Shadow Man, & When the Boys Come Marching Home These 3 songs are mellow & slow, but excellent Bowie songs. Very much in the Heathen mood. His voice sounds great. 3 must-have songs for Bowie fans. The last track You've got a Habit of Leaving is a remake from Pinups I think. Doesn't do much for me. And of course Slow Burn is good.

5 out of 5 stars ::sigh:: Toy: What could have been!.......2003-02-27

This is brilliant: Bowie at his very, very best. His voice has never been better than on the title track, and the bonus songs from the discarded "Toy" only make the Bowie fan wistful for what seems to be a lost masterpiece.

Mark Plati, find a way to leak all of Toy online! ; )

4 out of 5 stars Worth Getting, but not quite 5 stars.......2003-01-25

Excepting the song Slow Burn which is on the Heathen cd (and a real classic), the other songs are interesting or pretty good. The standout is You've Got a Habit of Leaving -- it should have been on Heathen.

    5 out of 5 stars Memorable Burn(s) by Bowie.......2002-08-31

The great thing import singles from non-pop artist is that instead of giving you remixes they opt for previously unreleased tracks. David Bowie s Slow Burn , the song which features a screechy guitar by Pete Townshed, is the first single from Bowie s Heathen . With rock guitar combined with Bowie s soulful vocal and agonizing lyrics, this song is a classic. Four non-album tracks follow and all of them are mournful and melancholy. The object of ridicule, Woody Jackson , is a very sympathetic character and Bowie s whispering vocal makes it a very worthy album track. It does appear on the Japanese edition of Heathen . Shadow Man and When the Boys Come Marching Home are also standout works. The fifth track is worth the price of the import alone. You ve got A Habit Of Leaving is punk rock with old R&B crooning and alternative rock sensibility. It s a pseudo twisted love song with a rousing jam session after the all too short lyrical section of the song are over. Unfortunately, Bowie is not one the musicians on this track but his upbeat vocal through this bitter song leave their impression. For those wanting yet another companion disc to Heathen (that is, assuming you own the American special edition of this disc or the Japanese import), this should tide you over til the next single (hopefully, Cactus ).

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent melodic rock album from the voice of Magnum.......2006-08-29

Released in 2003, When Empires Burn is the first Bob Catley solo album not to be written and produced by Ten mainman Gary Hughes. Instead, Ten's keyboardist Paul Hodson is on board as songwriter and producer.

Fortunately, the album is every bit as good as Catley's previous work. While I tend to prefer Hughes's material, Hodson proves to be a first-rate songwriter in his own right.
The material on When Empires Burn has an epic romantic flair that reminds me quite a bit of Catley's debut album the Tower. Even the basic love songs have a certain aura of power and grandeur that only a unique singer like Bob Catley could provide. When Empires Burn is probably a bit heavier than the average Magnum album, but it also has its softer moments.

Overall, When Empires Burn is an excellent melodic rock album, and is sure to please fans of Magnum, Ten, and melodic rock fans in general. Catley has proven time and again that his albums are always worth checking out.

NOTE: There are a couple of different versions of this album (digipack, Japanese import, etc.) They all have the same track listing and bonus tracks (Heaven Can Wait and When the Earth Lies Still), so my recommendation is to find the one with the lowest price and grab it!

Just like any other Savage Garden cd, this one is great. The drum & bass remix is "Gunning Down Romance" is awesome. I would only buy it if you're looking for the remix though.

3 out of 5 stars Not really a must have for collectors.......2000-06-08

This single is, of course, good (because all of their music is good), but really doesn't have anything special on it. The tracks are: 1.CRASH & BURN: It's the "radio edit". Personally, I see nothing really different about it. It sounds just like the album version. 2.TWO BEDS AND A COFFEE MACHINE: An absolutely amazing song. However, it's already on Affirmation so, again, it's not really anything new. But for people that don't have their album, this will be a real treat. 3.GUNNING DOWN ROMANCE (drum & bass remix): This remix really isn't much different from the album version but it's still cool and improves on the album's. It's really the only thing in here for collectors.
