Customer Reviews:
The Best Of Their Later Work.......2007-01-19
Sawyer Brown made their first real impact on "Star Search" many years ago as a somewhat goofy, pop-induced Country act. They made their mark with lightweight songs like "Betty's Bein' Bad" and "Step That Step." As they entered the 90's, Sawyer Brown held fast to their upbeat roots, but delved into deeper and sometimes very touching songs. This particular "Greatest Hits" plainly shows the listener that they're getting the top tunes from the group's albums from 1990-1995. What's amazing is that in only five years they did manage to build up such a catalogue worthy of being called "Greatest Hits."
Things start off with my personal favorite upbeat Sawyer Brown tune, "Some Girls Do." I actually requested that this tune be played at my wedding reception. It's quickly followed by "Thank God For You" and then the album takes a dark turn with "All These Years," which is, in my opinion, the toughest and greatest song ever put out by Sawyer Brown. It deals with not so much with adultery, but with what was happening that lead up to it. It's a great song. After that we get the humbling "Dirt Road" and another uptempo number in "This Time." "The Walk" follows that and shows us a more touching side to the band. "Trouble On The Line," another fun song about a broken heart comes next, followed by the decent "Cafe On The Corner" and "I Don't Believe In Goodbye." The last song on the album is "The Boys & Me" and it closes the album with a lighter touch than the songs that immediately preceded it.
Overall, this is a legitimate "Hits" album. Many other bands will toss a couple of modest hits and some filler tunes into a single album and try to pass it off as a "Greatest Hits" collection, but Sawyer Brown has enough songs in their catalogue to draw from to warrant two "Greatest Hits" collections.
If you enjoy punchy, upbeat Country that straddles that fine line between bands like Exile and Restless Heart, you're sure to enjoy this album from Sawyer Brown.
Highly recommended.
phenomenal.......2006-11-02
This was a terrific album featuring many of Sawyer Brown's great hits like "Cafe on the Corner" and "All These Years." It offers a wide variety of songs and was quite good, I thought. If you are a fan of Sawyer Brown, odds are you will like this album.
Its been awhile.......2005-09-13
Since i've listened to anything by Sawyer Brown. I remember them way back in the day being on Star Search and thinking. They are gonna be pretty big one day, i'm guessing from the fact that they have a couple greatest hits albums that its happened. This cd has a good amount of some S Brown hits from the period 1990-1995. I think this is a good intro to anyone that wants to get into Sawyer Brown.
Solid Hits Collection.......2004-01-03
Some people probably still remember Sawyer Brown as the country act discovered on the original Star Search. Their music was somewhat flimsy but fun then. However, they quickly developed into a solid country act, as witnessed by this greatest hits collection. All 10 songs hit the Billboard Country top 5 singles, with "Thank God for You" and "Some Girls Do" going all the way to #1.
The band include a nice mixture of up-tempo songs and ballads here. Their up-tempo songs really swing, especially "Thank God for You," with its clever chorus, "I thank the bank for the money/ Thank God for you." Perhaps their best ballad is "The Walk," which went to #2 on the Country charts. The song brilliantly captures the fear that a child can feel when separating from his parents, with its haunting refrain, "Cause I took this walk you're walking now/ Boy, I've been in your shoes." Impressively, all of the songs were written or co-written by lead singer Mark Miller or other band members; the band clearly has depth and talent.
Like many older country bands, Sawyer Brown hasn't made much noise on country radio in recent years. However, they were signed to Lyric Street Records (home of Rascall Flatts and Shedaisy) in 2003, and they're still recording and touring. If you're not familiar with their music already or don't have any of their CDs, this greatest hits compilation is a terrific place to start.
Fine introduction to their music.......2003-09-20
Sawyer Brown carved their own niche in country music with their brand of mostly lightweight, upbeat songs but with the occasional serious song. As their career progressed, the number of serious songs increased. This collection of their music covering the early nineties showcases both aspects.
The set begins with Some girls do, one of Sawyer Brown's best-known songs, typical of their upbeat music. Other songs here in similar vein include Thank god for you, The dirt road, This time, Trouble on the line and The boys and me.
Café on the corner is a very poignant song about hard times that shows the serious side of their music. Other reflective songs include All these years, The walk and I don't believe in Goodbye.
This is a wonderful collection of music by a group that may at first seem to be just like any other country band but isn't quite like any of the others.

Customer Reviews:
Any Hoyt is good Hoyt.......2007-04-22
Axton is as important to Americana as Dylan and Springsteen and deserves all the respect and attention given him and more. Seeing any CD release of his music is a pleasant suprise but many of his best are missing from this release. If you want Hoyt's best, you've got to have - 500 Miles, Hotel Ritz, Pride of Man, So Hard To Give It All Up, The Devil, Mountain Right, Cowboys On Horses With Wings, Wild Bull Rider, and the most beautiful song he ever sang: I Collect Hearts. Other glaring ommissions include- I Love To Sing, The Way Of The World, Southbound, I Left My Gal In The Mountains and California Women.
Excellent Collection of Hoyt Axton's songs.......2007-03-08
This CD is the best collection of Hoyt Axtons that I have found. I could not find much selection in retail stores.
Best compilation of overlooked star.......2007-01-09
Hoyt Axton grew up in the business of making music. With obvious regard to his mother and her song writing efforts, Hoyt carried the family music torch for several decades. It's a mystery why he never quite got his just due with Billboard charts and radio air-play. No matter, if you're interested in country, folk, story songs, or just fine music, Hoyt Axton's Flashes of Fire will not disappoint!
Excellent Retrospective.......2004-07-17
Flashes Of Fire's 25 diverse, brightly remastered tracks reach from a live '62 "Greenback Dollar" (later covered by the Kingston Trio) to 1990's whimsical "Fearless The Wonder Dog." For all the rock hits he penned (Three Dog Night's "Joy To The World" and "Never Been To Spain," Ringo Starr's "No No Song"), Hoyt Axton's albums and singles surprisingly never cracked Pop's top 40 - only Country's - though his literate, left-of-center writing was as far from mainstream country as it could get. A wide range of artists such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby and David Crosby were among those who covered him.
In the drug-hazy `60s and `70s, Axton's anti-drug songs never seemed square. Cheech & Chong make a cameo appearance on "No No Song." Steppenwolf's seering "The Pusher" cover powered Easy Rider's soundtrack. "Snow Blind Friend" (which Steppenwolf also did) viewed substance abuse with pity. As for Axton's country top-tenners, "Boney Fingers" showed his droll side, while "When The Morning Comes" (a duet with Linda Ronstadt) was, as its name implies, a beguiling morning-after song. A big bear of a man, Axton died at only 61 in 1999 after a career spanning writing, singing and Hollywood acting. His mom was Mae Axton who co-wrote Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel."

the capitol collection.......2007-06-02
I was disappointed in the fact that I already had 3 of the CD's. I feel it was unclear in the description what all the CD's were. I thought it would be a "collection" on 6 CD's, instead it was 6 separate CD's that had already been released.

Chris,
Is is Truly one understimated artist. When I think of cowboys, I think of Mr. Ledoux.
I have his CD, greatest 20 hits. But, clearly that would not do justice to the man. buying this box set was a great way to give me a better understanding of his music. and what he means to Cowboys, Rodeo, country music, and his influence on artists like Garth Brooks.
We miss you Chris, and may you rest in peace sir.

This comprehensive collection had every song I could imagine you would want from Chris.
its good,but not great.......2003-06-30
why do 2 box sets that overlap each other? this set has (atleast) 10 cuts you can find on the American Cowboy set, now yes, there are the other good cuts that are on here (the Stampede cd, for example, is awesome). But in my mind, if you want his best stuff, just get AC since it gives a better (and more rounded) view of his carreer

Amazon.com essential recording
Backed by the sterling Buckaroos, Owens's trademark Bakersfield honky tonk was grittier and meatier than that of contemporaries like George Jones. Relying heavily on the crisp lead guitar of Don Rich and the steel-guitar strains of Tom Brumley, the music possessed a distinctive locomotive rhythm. Rhino's comprehensive 62-song collection follows Owens from his landmark 1961 duets with Rose Maddox through early collaborations with Harlan Howard to his first number one hit, "Act Naturally." Owens would put a stranglehold on the country charts, reaching the top spot consistently with hits including "Together Again" and "I've Got a Tiger By the Tail." Along the way, he'd mix in Chuck Berry covers, bluegrass staples, and even a Paul Simon tune. His later work features duets with Susan Raye, Emmylou Harris, and Dwight Yoakam. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Buck lives on!.......2007-05-26
Like Merle Haggard and Wynn Stewart, Buck Owens is the personification of the Bakersfield sound. This box set covers some of his very best material, and features a well-written booklet cram-packed with information to help take you through the years of one of country's top artists. Like Haggard, Buck's backing musicians are as good as they come, led by the incomparable Don Rich.
Buck You will always be with us!.......2006-08-24
Where do we start,
Buck will always be missed by us.
A great human being, A major influence on the bakersfield style and the country music industry.
A Songwriter like no other, and ofcourse Hee Haw was a great success due to him and to Roy Clark.
Now regarding the boxset, I really enjoyed it. 3CDs are packed with hits that will surely entertain you.
But, please note that the boxset has missed a number of amazing songs. So, please don't overlook buying the boxset, but also purchase:
1. The Carnegie Hall Concert by Owens, Buck .
2. In Japan!.
3. Buck Owens sings Harlan Howard.
4. In London [LIVE]
These 4 titles are what come to mind.
Thanks & enjoy,
Nawaf
buck is king.......2005-09-03
this is a wonderful box set! a must have for any serious music collector. of course, his early material is some of the greatest music to ever have been performed but also included is the best of his later 'stuff'. the only disappointment for me was/is the lack of any of his 'live at panther hall' material. A++++++++ five star box, buy it now!
Good set.......2005-09-01
I'm really not into box sets, but this is a good one. Buck Owens has no peers and once you listen to this set, you'll understand that noone will ever come close. The first two discs are my favorites, with the third seemingly out of place. Dont get me wrong, the third (late Buck) disc has some gems, but it lacks the magic of Don Rich and is infused with the weird late-'60's vibe that hit country music. There will never be another combination like Buck & Don Rich; and there will never be another star who can sing the saddest "cry-in-your-beer" song in that famous 3/4 upbeat. This is what country music is all about; and forget the Buck of Hee Haw....this is the most addictive collection of songs you'll ever come across. My teenage daughter and son even poked fun at the true honky-tonk, down-home, lyrics when I play them in the car....but I've since caught both of them humming and even singing the songs when they thought noone else was around. This is timeless music so dont miss out on it.
bcuk owens is a great artist.......2005-04-02
this is a great box set collection. i could only think of a few i really like that didnt make it here with the other great songs.. but mainly live ones. i love buck owens' music he was great back then and to me he is still great today. yes dwight yoakam kinda helpd get buck back on the radio' in someways i know he got him to a younger group' i grew up watching him on heehaw. him and roy clark. but i guess my peronal favorites on this box set would be all the hits. im so glad to see buck still alive and goin strong' buck's the king of bakersfield country.

This 2 CD set represents the best introduction to Hooker's trademark sound: one- and two-chord vamps delivered with a hypnotic, perpetual boogie rhythm and accented by reverberating staccato runs and intense foot-stomping. With his deep, rich voice, Hooker electrified the blues of the Delta, bringing the stark, brooding sound to the city and influencing scores of rock musicians. Most of his highlights are here: from early Modern classics "Boogie Chillen," "Crawlin' King Snake," and "House Rent Boogie"; to Vee-Jay singles "Boom Boom" and "Dimples"; to 1966 Chess work with Chicagoans Lafayette Leake and Willie Dixon; to 1971 collaborations with rockers Canned Heat; to performances with modern blues stars Roy Rogers and Bonnie Raitt. --Marc Greilsamer

One of The Best Hooker Anthologies.......2007-04-03
John Lee Hooker: The Ultimate Collection 1948-1990 is one of the best, if not the best anthologies of the blues master early work and some of his later work.
Hooker, who because of legal entanglements, recorded under a lot of different names (John Lee Cooker, etc...), is one of the alltime greats, able to evoke haunting tones and moods on some songs, while kicking off a rocking boogie vibe in others. Just about all of the blues standards that he is known for are on this collection - Boogie Children, Crawling Kingsnake Blues, House Rent Boogie, One Bourbor, One Scotch, Onr Beer, and many others.
If you want to get the best representation of his early era, and pickup his later comeback material elsewhere, this is a great way to get your fill of Johnny Lee.

pretty good but a little disappointing for the price

A truly original Emperor of the Blues has left behind a legacy that few of us can fathom. Where does one begin? This collection of 31 classic hits, though some 12 years premature to be complete, is an excellent start, and will literally save you hundreds of dollars if you are an avid collector. I might add that you will need that money to own every recording he's made since 1990; they are superb! You will be disappointed if you go out and buy everything out there. You can run into some pretty iffy recordings and collections, and lots of rehashed material pieced together under different titles, especially when rummaging through all the Best ofs and compilations that have been produced over the years, so it is best to stick with John Lee's early and later classics, like Live at the Cafe Au Go-Go and Live at Soledad Prison, and for more recent excellence The Healer and The Best of Friends. My favorite John Lee Hooker treasure is the The Healer Original Master Recording Gold CD B000000IS9. Beautiful.
Get Hooked.......2006-04-05
Thank you Rhino for doin' it one more time. This fabulous 2-CD compilation, nicely packaged and including a good booklet, profiles The Hook in all his glory. Perfect if you're new to John Lee and an excellent overview for those attempting to efficiently replace several worn-white Hooker LPs, The Ultimate Collection 1948-1990 provides everything except the board he's beating his foot on. Those who would weep and wail that this compilation is incomplete are losing sight of the basic truth about Hooker, he only did one thing. And it was incredibly simple. And he did it over and over and over. Most Hooker songs aren't even structured like songs, they seem to begin and end in vapor. But what happens in-between is nothing short of magical.
The blues has never, never produced a richer or more authoritative voice, as a singer, John Lee Hooker is untouchable. His guitar playing is beyond simple, it's rudimentary, but that boogie groove is his and his alone and he works it to death - you can feel it in bones you didn't know you had. What is really nice about this compilation is the authenticity, you get The Hook in the raw. (Some later work had him collaborating in very unfortunate over-productions.) You simply can't go wrong in this anthology but I guarantee you that if you begin with Peavine you will find it almost impossible to turn back. In a world of manufactured music that is slick, shiny smooth, and totally without soul it is thoroughly refreshing to encounter this. Buy it.
I'm teachin' the blues to this cat........2005-06-22
This is a solid collection of songs by John Lee Hooker, spanning most of his long career. It doesn't have every important track by him, but it's the best that's available.

Brief, but cool-- with oddities.......1999-06-14
At only 10 songs, and without either "Travelin' Man" or "Hello Mary Lou", this doesn't quite live up to its title. Rick Nelson fans should know at the moment, there IS no such thing as a "perfect" or "complete" best-of package available. But this is a "must-have" for the following reasons: it's the only CD where you can find his 3 earliest recordings in one place. "I'm Walkin'", "A Teenager's Romance" and "You're My One And Only Love". It also has different versions of 2 songs that appeared on the EMI "Vol.1" CD, "Never Be Anyone Else But You" (EMI inexplicably included an "alternate take") and the classic "Believe What You Say" (this is the LP version with The Jordannaires!). Toss in "Stood Up", "Lonesome Town", his 30's remakes from 1963, "Fools Rush In" and "For You" and you have an album that would only have been better with a few more tunes added. But did they HAVE to include "Garden Party" from '72? (Sure it was his biggest hit ever-- but here, it just sounds out-of-place!)
INANE.......1998-10-17
This is an amazing one piece grindcore band. Some of the fastest I've ever heard. The bass is tuned very low and the vocals are extra growly like Napalm Death. Buy this album!!!!!!

Very few reconciled the often-conflicting agendas of art and entertainment as deftly as Roy Rogers. The King of the Cowboys owned a tenor voice so amiable and mellifluous that it had the power to disarm even the most jaded among us. Perhaps that's why he was such a popular figure in the years during and after World War II: his music was an antidote to the unsettled nature of the times, recalling the simple and sincere life of the cowboy, but revolving around timeless themes that even the slickest city boy could relate to. The bulk of this three-CD collection comes from Rogers's steady stream of radio shows, and the performances are highly professional yet never stiff, musically resonant yet never self-serving, and they usually are more exuberant and spontaneous than the original studio versions. The comprehensive set brilliantly showcases the range and depth of Rogers's talents: he could croon a congenial ballad one moment, yodel passionately and fluently the next, and lead a hot-swinging big band after that. Many of the cuts feature the incredible instrumental and vocal talents of the Sons of the Pioneers or the harmonies of wife Dale Evans, while the studio numbers usually feature the top players of the day. The majority of his Western songs were written not on the prairie, the ranch, or the trail, but in Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley. Still, Rogers had an uncanny ability to make the unauthentic and calculated sound genuine and refreshing. And while this may not be authentic Western music, it is without question authentic Hollywood-style Western music, which has its own distinct rewards. The result is an immensely charming collection that celebrates Rogers's charismatic performances, but more than that, pays homage to midcentury radio and film and their valiant (yet ultimately futile) attempt to recapture America's rapidly fading innocence. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Best ever collection of Roy Rogers music!.......2007-01-20
If you are a Roy Rogers fan, this is a must have. You will enjoy hearing all the songs that you enjoyed in his movies. His songs make you happy and it's easy to catch yourself singing along. He's the best cowboy singer. Wonderful voice! Anyone would enjoy this collection! 5 stars!
one missing.......2003-01-11
This is a great set,but where is "Think of me",a 1943 hit,on the Decca label(#6092)?
A Great Box Set.......2002-12-31
I have been a Roy Rogers fan for many, many years. I love his Western films, especially the ones with Dale, Gabby and the Sons of the Pioneers, but I also love his music. In my opinion, Roy is America's #1 singing cowboy. That's why I was so tickled when I found this boxed set. There are many great "movie" songs featured, some which I have heard over and over, still others that I have never heard before. I'm familiar with " Jingle, Jangle, Jingle" which has been recorded by other artists but this was my first time to hear it done so wonderfully by Roy and Dale. It is one of my favorite cuts. The same goes for "River of No Return." There are just too many great songs to mention here.
I hope Dusty, and all the people responsible for getting Roy and Dale's music on CD, will gather some more of those precious gems from Roy's countless B westerns and put them in yet another boxed set. One song in particular I would love to hear again is "Idaho", from the 1943 movie of the same title.
If you are a Roy Rogers fan, you will love this box set.
Overall, a good set.......1999-11-29
Overall, a good set.
A couple of caveats: - These are radio transcriptions, with really bad acting between the songs. - Some of the key songs are not performed in full. - Some of the songs have topical verses added ('Get Along Little Dogies' with a verse that the cattle would become meat for the soldiers!) - The swing orchestra on many of the songs is rather strange; but some selections have guitar. - Interesting to hear the aggressive commercials for tie-in merchandise (nothing new under the sun!) - Booklet is printed on dark paper in tiny type.
Still a good set.
awesome.......1999-09-05
Roy Rogers was a hero to me asa child, young adult and even now as an old adult. To be able to own a collectionof his music like this is beyond words. The music is a very good representation of his career in the movies. Thetribute to him by Dusty is something every parent would be proud of.

Sounds like I am getting carried away here, huh? Well, please come along with me. This CD is absolutely, no doubt, irrevocably one of the BEST greatest hit collections from a country artist of all time. The hits chronicle the three years that saw Tanya Tucker become a platinum selling artist . These are the songs that kept her a part of the new country at the time, proving she could keep up with the changing tastes in country music. They increased her sales, fan base and kept her a household word with the legions of new fans country attracted during the early 90's. The biggest hits of her thirty year career are here. It's A Little Too Late is a fast paced dance track that stayed on radio forever and also the video still plays on country video stations. Down To My Last Teardrop! "Some Kind Of Trouble" a bluesy, jazzy masterpiece. The phenomenal "(Without You) What Do I Do With Me". Her gorgeous duet with T. Graham Brown "Don't Go Out". The toe-tapping, two stepping "Walking Shoes". One of the best country heart-hurting, tear jerking tunes in years the incredible Oh, What It Did To Me." Only Tucker can sing 'em with that much feeling! The instant classic, still requested, sought-after, "Two Sparrows In A Hurricane." That is the tune that when all is said and done might be her signature song. Next, the fun and frolicking "If You're Heart Ain't Busy Tonight." And it all comes to an end.. SNIFF SNIFF. with the bouncy and witty "It Won't Be Me" As a lifelong Tucker fanatic I might be partial in lots of ways but I know several people who have this CD and LOVE IT! . This is a MUST HAVE. One of the most enjoyable country CD's EVER. Pick up your copy RIGHT NOW... and tell em Ron sent ya. Thanks y'all!

Just Enough For Me.......2000-01-06
I preface this by pointing out that I'm not a MAJOR Tanya Tucker fan. But this CD has much of her very best material. The title is self-explanatory. My personal favorites are the bluesy "Some Kind of Trouble", & the ballads "(Without You) What Do I Do With Me" & "Oh What It Did to Me". The rest, of course, were also big radio hits, including "It's a Little Too Late", "Down to My Last Teardrop", "Don't Go Out", "If Your Heart Ain't Busy Tonight" & "Two Sparrows in a Hurricane". She's a fine vocalist with one of the most distinctive voices in music.
TOTALLY Spellbinding........1999-10-05
Tanya Tucker as she sould be remembered. A great CD for any occasion because it has such a wide variety of great songs. My only complaint is I wish the album could be longer!
