4 out of 5 stars Excellent comp, however..........2003-01-28

The upside is that these are the ORIGINAL versions of Webb's hits, not the awful remakes he made later. However, there's one thing you should know: the version of "Slowly" included here is NOT the hit version, but rather an earlier one. While it's nice to have this alternate take (as it isn't available anywhere else other than the Bear Family box, I'm sure), it seems odd that the more familiar version of "Slowly" wasn't used. I say this because of its historical significance -- Bud Issacs' pedal steel intro was really the genesis of pedal steel in country music; it was hugely influential, and it seems odd to hear "Slowly" without it. This quibble aside, the whole CD is worth it for the chance to hear "The New Raunchy." One wonders what them boys was drinkin' in the studio that night!

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of 50s material.......2001-06-04

If you're looking for a comprehensive set on Pierce's 50s material, go for the Bear Family set. However, this piece offers a good skimming off of many of his top country hits of the entire 50s decade. Although there are several compilations of Pierce's 50s stuff, this is one of the few that offers "Bye Bye Love" (the Everly Bros. cover) - one of only two songs by Pierce that managed to crack the top 100 pop charts. The sound quality overall is good considering some of these tracks go back to the early 50s. The entire disc is in mono with the exception of "I Ain't Never" which is in stereo. A decent quality compilation of Pierce's 50s output.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A-1 Collection.......2005-11-26

One of out true father's of country music, and definately the King of Honky Tonk, here is the finest collection of early Webb you'll ever find (and, of course, it's a Bear Family product). Besides the magnificent 4 CD collection of songs, there is a large-sized booklet enclosed with extensive notes and background on these years of Webb Pierce's career. I know that these Bear Family Collections can be expensive, but they are worth every penny, and these folks do the most admirable job you can imagine of putting together a collection! Like all of their box-set collections, there are a few numbers included that are repeats (inclusions of re-makes of the same song more than once), and there are a couple of those on Webb's collection. I believe you'll enjoy the sounds of the Wilburn Brothers, as well as early Red Sovine and Kitty Wells duets here. Like I said, this is one complete collection. A+++

5 out of 5 stars An great collection of early hits from a honky tonk legend.......2001-12-12

A big, fat, honkin' four-CD box set representing the holy grail of Webb's work that's actually in print. The LP-sized package includes 113 tracks and a lavish booklet with great liner notes by Webb-ologist Otto Kitsinger, as well as a complete discography of Webb's Decca sessions, giving info on side musicians, writers, producers, etc. Plus, there's over an album's worth of this material which had never been released before! ... So why do I so seldom actually listen to these discs? Well, slowly I find myself coming to the conclusion that Bear Family might do better off if they made single CD "economy" versions of some of their fabuloso box sets... The multi-disc boxes are great fetish items, but somewhat pricey and a bit daunting to delve into once you actually shell out the cash and drag one home. Don't get me wrong, though -- this collection is ace bunny killer. Not a bad track on it. Worth every pfennig. And the second that Bear Family puts out a follow-up collection of stuff from the late-'50s and early-'60s, I'll be standing in line to pick up my copy.

5 out of 5 stars real country.......2001-09-24

Thus is a great boxed set, which reveals Webb as being the closest country artist to Hank Williams stylistically. A few songs have some odd percussion-almost sounding like coconut shells being banged against a table. A few other songs-although good-suffer from the intrusive piano found on numerous Nashville songs of the time. But, all in all, this is a great collection from a man who belongs in the Country music hall of fame and like most Bear Family boxed sets-a little expensive but worth the cost.

4 out of 5 stars The Way It Used To Be.......2000-06-14

If you want to hear country music like it used to be, in the great era of the 1950's and 1960's, this is the set for you. Disc 4 is particularly outstanding with classic but little known songs like "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down" and the great prison song "Life To Go." It doesn't get much better than this, both as to songs and Pierce's unique style. A clear illustration as to how the style of country music has drastically changed over the past 40 years - for the worse, I would say! If you want total immersion in classic country music, buy this boxed set.

5 out of 5 stars "If you were me and I was you".......2000-02-27

Webb Pierce music was playing on radio and juke boxes through out the fiftys and sixtys and it is just as good today as it was then, if you are a true country fan you have to have this album because this is the roots of country,"dont do it darling"and "how long will it take"are among my favorites and of course "wondering" is the song that gave him the name Wondering Boy.. this album is an important part of country music'and a "must Have"for country collectors
