Funny, funny, funny.......2007-06-27
If you love comedy you need this CD. Rodney Carrington is one of the funniest comedians today. I also purchased his DVD "Rodney Carrington: Live at the Majestic". This DVD is his "King of the Mountain" album but the fact that you actually see him acting out the show makes it that much funnier. My favorite part is the "Chicken Song". If you get the DVD (which I highly recommend) it will keep you laughing long after you see it. Trust me you will want to watch it over and over again......... I know I did.
Another Good Collection.......2007-06-19
This is another entertaining collection of countrified humor from a man who mostly has one thing on his mind; that is the thing that most men have on their minds. He is self deprecating and usually funny. That's enough for me.
Rodney is also known for his songs. These are usually scattered throughout his albums but in this one, they are all concentrated at the end. First come the live performances and then there are some repeats using studio recordings.
Its not a bad collection
Absolutely hilarious!!! .......2007-06-11
This is one of the funniest CD's and/or albums I have ever listened to. I heard these live on tour but, I still laugh like crazy. Also, Angel Friend is a very touching tribute to his good friend and fellow comedian Barry Martin. The song actually brought me through a very bad time and gave me hope when I lost my best friend.
Funniest Man In Comedy!.......2007-06-05
I've watched this dvd 5 times already and could watch it 10 more...you will laugh the whole time its on!
Rodney almost does it again........2007-05-21
This was really funny, but I don't think it was quite as funny as his earlier stuff.

Though the uptempo "Wrecking Ball" shows that King Wilkie can function just fine as a straightforward bluegrass band, most of the music by the acoustic Virginia sextet draws more from classic rock and vintage country, and particularly from the influences where the two converge. The harmonies of "Millie's Song" recall those of the Everly Brothers, "Savannah" sounds like one of the Band's evocations of the American South, the singalong "Crazy Daisy" and the atmospheric insistence of "Stone & Steel" suggest the Byrds of the same era, and the honky-tonk shuffle of "Angeline" draws from the country side of the Rolling Stones. Yet bittersweet ballads such as "Rockabye (Farewell Lonesome Dove)" and "Captivator" are the sort of material that could fit just fine on country radio. From the chamber strings of "Oh My Love" to the ragtime whistle of "Ms. Peabody," this label debut showcases a band of impressive range, depth, and potential. --Don McLeese
Album Description
Even as they were named 2004's Emerging Artist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association, the sound of King Wilkie was extending outward in directions that could no longer be comfortably contained under the bluegrass banner. The band spent the next two years touring non-stop, building a die-hard following and honing an idiosyncratic new sound. The result is the evocative, harrowing Low Country Suite - a dramatic push into uncharted sonic terrain. Produced by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks, Wilco), Low Country Suite draws on the pioneering spirit of Sweetheart of the Rodeo-era Byrds, Gram Parsons' solo LPs, and "Country Honk" Stones, while the album's gentler songs are equally informed by the stark, confessional folk of Nico, Nick Drake, and Leonard Cohen. Haunting yet strangely uplifting, Low Country Suite is the captivating sound of a band willing to leave precedent behind to create intoxicating new music from the jagged remains of yesterday.
Customer Reviews:
A heartbreaking mediocrity.......2007-07-06
Following a brilliant debut album and a lively, imaginative self-produced EP, King Wilkie has spiraled downward into the mind-numbing, self-indulgent depths of contemporary singer-songwriterdom. The band's mostly lackluster original songs get a full-tilt, budget-busting studio treatment from Los Angeles producer Jim Scott. And for what? Satellite radio airplay? Opportunities to play trendy alt-country venues? Unfortunately, this sophomore effort completely undermines King Wilkie's key strengths: its youthful energy and dynamic use of contrasts. King Wilkie isn't the first bluegrass band to take a shot at a broader pop audience. But "Low Country Suite" is no "Wheatstraw Suite," if you catch my drift. Don't do this again, boys.
A new sound - King Wilkie.......2007-06-27
Do yourself a favor and buy/download/share this album. Best so far of 2007, and combines influences such as the beach boys, the byrds, stones, simon/garfunkel. But the voices here (both literal and lyrical) set them apart as their own. They aren't a bluegrass band, or a country band, or any other "kind" of band - they're just King Wilkie.
oh, and see them live in small venues while you still can.
thank me later
A Class of Their Own!.......2007-06-27

... and 1/2 .... A genuine, relaxed, good-time vibe full of alluring radiance & emotional pathos .......2007-06-26
Playing Time - 42:48 -- From Charlottesville, Virginia, King Wilkie has a new contemporary Americana sound. Named for Father of Bluegrass Bill Monroe's favorite horse, the band's easy-going acoustic jaunt in this set is more of a canter than a gallop. Rather than high lonesome bluegrass, King Wilkie's "Low Country Suite" gives us a soothing folk-pop sound with rootsy feeling and earthy lilt. Striving for a more personal musical statement than traditional bluegrass afforded them, their approach has come to emphasize life experiences, their individual strengths and personal influences.
Initially formed in 2002 by Ted Pitney (guitar) and Reid Burgess (mandolin), these two graduates of Kenyon College in Ohio moved to Virginia to start a bluegrass band. The rest of the group includes Abe Spear (banjo), Drew Breakey (bass), Nick Reeb (fiddle), and John McDonald (guitar). In 2003, King Wilkie signed with Rebel Records. In 2004, they won IBMA's Emerging Artist of the Year Award. In 2005, their thoughtful melody-driven songs began marking an evolution of their musical makeover. The compositions on "Low Country Suite" are a number of pleasantly smooth movements that take us on a breezy jaunt through nostalgic, romantic or placid emotions. With some understated lap steel, organ, piano, harmonica or percussive embellishment in the mix, the set's result is one of mostly serene, laid-back imagery. "Angeline" is one of the more raucous offerings, with a hint of 1970s folk rock tonality. With its raw emotion and gritty realism, "Wrecking Ball" is a wild, thrilling ride with old-time spirit. "She's a wrecking ball coming through my wall so tall, like a house of straw these beautiful dreams will fall ....." The slow swing and bright lyricism of "Ms. Peabody" also provides some nice diversity to a mostly ethereal set mainly about "restlessness, coming of age, loss of innocence." The themes of absolution and liberation are clearly stated in "Captivator."
Produced by Jim Scott, an objective of "Low Country Suite" was to capture the band's own pioneering spirit in a manner reminiscent of the Byrds, Gram Parsons, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, or Bob Dylan. "King Wilkie creates their own genre of music -- a beautiful, true and honest sound," Scott once said. It's a lofty goal, and King Wilkie demonstrates both the aptitude and confidence to make a significant mark. The band now has the support of the reputable Rounder label, and I commend them for their flexibility, adaptability and relaxed sophistication. Thirty years from now, "Low Country Suite" may not be looked at as their defining work that established King Wilkie as an irresistible, clarion voice, but it certainly is a genuine, relaxed, good-time vibe full of alluring radiance and emotional pathos from their collective gut. Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28
This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12
This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

If there is a recording that is required listening for every blues fan, it's this one. Robert Johnson wasn't just King of the Delta blues; he was one of its founding fathers, and these re-mastered tunes are as timeless and important today as they were all those years ago. The songs that passed into the blues canon, to be covered by countless guitarists over the years, are here: "Crossroad Blues," "Preaching Blues," "Come On In My Kitchen," "Walking Blues," and more. And on this particular version of this often-reissued recording, there's an additional treat: a previously unreleased version of "Traveling Riverside Blues." Absolutely essential. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
More of a historical document than a fun listening experience..........2007-06-01
After listenting to Eric Clapton's "Me and Mr. Johnson" tribute, I decided to go back and have another listen to Robert Johnson. I'm sorry to say that this recording is worth more as a historical document than as an enjoyable listening experience. The compositions are strong, the singing is inspired and the guitar playing is O.K., but the recording quality is terrible and the overall sound is very thin. This record is for the dedicated blues fan, not for the casual fan. If you're curious to know where Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones, B.B. King and many other great artists got their original inspiration from, this disc will clear up any doubts. But my suspicion is that most of the listening public will have only an academic interest in this recording. It simply doesn't bear repeated listening when you consider how terrible the over-all quality is. I wish I had a time machine so that I could go back and capture these recordings using the love and attention that they truly deserved.
As a sidenote, I would just like to add that, because Mr. Johnson died at a tender age, these recordings are probably only a hint as to where he was headed as an artist. Eric Clapton, by contrast, is in his 60's and is a very technically accomplished musician with a great back-up band. Pick up "Me and Mr. Johnson" for an enjoyable listen, and consider "King of the Delta Blues Singers" for the original blueprint.
best sounding cd .......2006-11-25
I have the box set. Sure it's (almost) complete, but the sequencing sucks and the digital clean-up is kinda sterile sounding. I got this cd awhile back just because of the extra song not available on the box. What I didn't expect was the far warmer sound of this disc in comparison with the box set. Occasionally the surface noise can be a bit a an obstruction, but, for the most part, this is the best way to hear these recordings without having to resort to 78 rpm records. Alas, sound quality should not be the determining factor as to whether or not one should be able to enjoy music, but this cd makes the case that a better sounding recording can enhance great music.
Oh, by the way, Johnson is good but Muddy is the king.
good stuff.......2006-04-13
The initial burst of lo-fi sound alienates everyone at first, but if you get past that the legend is there. Robert Johnson is as every bit as good as he gets credit for and songs are song with a full throated passion and the music features almost every great blues guitar lick ever recorded. Even if you never get past the crappy recording, this is a must listen just for the historical importance of Robert Johnson.
King of the blues!.......2005-09-06
Excellent transaction, this CD was in perfect condition. I've spent hours of amazing fun listening to this amazing artist. thanks so much for such a great transaction!
How to get the really complete "Complete Recordings".......2005-08-29
As other reviewers have commented, this album is great (and is the compilation which in its original LP form triggered the whole British blues boom that lies at the foundation of much modern rock), but you should really get the Complete Recordings instead. However, you will also want the newly discovered alternate take of Traveling Riverside Blues, which is on this CD but missing from the "complete" set. The solution is to get Elijah Wald's book "Escaping the Delta", which gives a fascinating analysis of Johnson's work within the context of his time and environment. Apart from being essential reading for any Johnson fan, it comes with a bonus CD that includes the missing track. Problem solved!

This five-disc set was the first release in BMG's effort to present Elvis's recorded legacy in a manner befitting the most important musical artist of his time. The strategy was simple--showcase, in chronological order, remastered versions of the King's 1950s output, from his sessions with Sam Phillips at Sun Studios (where they arguably invented the very notion of rock & roll) through his 1958 Army induction. Not everything Elvis recorded in the '50s was great (just as not everything he recorded in Hollywood was rotten), but there are dozens of tracks here that, quite simply, can make a bad day seem all that much better. Which surely still makes him the king of something. Suffice it to say this is one box set that lives up to its title. --Bill Holdship

The Complete 50's Masters.......2007-04-12
Do yourself a favor and order this collection along with the 60's & 70's. There are songs you won't find on other CD's, and hear Elvis as a regular "guy" just makes you love him more.
Definitive Elvis '50s compilation.......2007-02-25
THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL: THE COMPLETE 50's MASTERS is a four-CD set, with a bonus disc containing alternate studio takes, and a lot of "live" Elvis recordings-- MGM Grand stuff, mostly. Except for the acetate of "That's When Your Heartaches Begins" and the few alternates, DISC 5 is fluff.
The other four CDs however are a treasure trove of the music that defined "The King." From his one-of-a-kind 1953 recording booth acetate of "My Happiness" to the 1958 fast version of "Ain't That Loving You Baby," this set documents Presley's recording career in chronological order and without gaps.
The 102-page long box-sized book includes sessionography, discography, color photos of all LP, EP and 45 picture sleeves, an excellent bio in easy to read print, and lots of other color and B&W photos. Sound quality is excellent. This one gets five stars for the biggest star of all!

The essential 50`s, 60`s and 70`s are something every Elvis Presley fan should have INMEDIATELY!!!!! The king will always live!!!!
An essential collection!.......2005-09-30
This is a comprehensive collection of Elvis' most influential work. Not every song is a classic, but there are many classics here. These are the recordings that shaped the foundation of Rock & Roll and popular music for a generation. From his early, ground breaking recordings for Sun Records to his smash 1950's hits with RCA, they are all here. Elvis at his creative peak! A must have!

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

As the line in the opening track, "The Peanut Vendor", says: "Fifty million monkeys can't be wrong." And back in 1971, the purchasers of this debut LP (originally The King's Singers: By Appointment) found overwhelming proof in its vinyl grooves that a refreshingly new quality product was on the market. Soon the unlikely lads known as The King's Singers were all over television screens in the company of the likes of Val Doonican, Shirley Bassey, and Nana Mouskouri--also, of course, performing bucketloads of serious repertoire in concerts. For those who rushed to buy the original, this re-release is a real trip down memory lane, the excellent sound enhanced by the extra detail and color in the CD transfer (though, please note, there's less than 35 minutes of music). "Cherry Ripe," "Scarborough Fair," and Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers" are here, along with lots more, performed with that familiar mix of vocal perfection and effortless poise and complemented by the discreet contribution of the Gordon Langford Trio. --Andrew Green
Customer Reviews:
King's Singers Debut.......2007-01-12
I am a real fan of the King's Singers, and this album was very well received. I loved it. Recommend it to anyone.
Thirty years old: still terrific.......2003-02-02
We have loved this album for 30 years. We are so pleased it has been released on CD. It was originally part of a very small collection of gramophone records, and is now one of hundreds of CDs, but it is one we keep playing and playing.
The singing is flawless, the songs are wonderful and the arrangements are very clever. What more could you want?
It includes The Kings' Singers theme song, "What Kind of Things (do the Kings' Singers sing?)" which is a humorous description of the variety in their music and in their vocal ranges.
Other highlights are:
Summertime, which is quite close to the orignal sheet music, carefully arranged for 6 voices.
The folk song Scarborough Fair adheres quite closely to the Simon and Garfunkel arrangement, whereas The Oak and the Ash and Blow Away the Morning Dew are special creations for the group by Gordon Langford.
Time Was and The Green Leaves of Summer show the group's ability to create a wonderful mood through slow, soulful singing.
Highly recommended. Timeless music.
This is vintage King's Singers!.......2001-06-09
In the thirty or more years that the King's Singers have been going, they've released dozens of CDs. And as much as I adore some of their recent recordings, I still regard this first album as some of their best work.
This performance is both of a very high quality and is also a magnificent showcase of the variety of things the King's Singers sing. I doubt you would find many other recordings which contain works by Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Bacharach as well as traditional folksongs from the British Isles and America - especially not recordings that are of such a high standard. The vocal harmonies are just delicious, and the Gordon Langford Trio also provides a brilliant accompaniment and gives songs like The Peanut Vendor, Shenandoah and Summertime a delightful relaxed feeling. Then there is also the lighthearted and whimsical What Kind of Things - a song all about what sort of music the King's Singers sing!
I was going to give this CD four stars rather than five (mainly because I hesitate to give top marks to anything ever - I know, I'm picky), but in the end I honestly couldn't think of anything which would justify taking a star away. It's worth all five!

nice assortment.......2007-03-13
I enjoy historical music, and this cd was a good assortment of songs. I was expecting all bouncy country dances, but some tracks sound more complex and serious. I'm no expert on country dances, so I don't know if the selections are representative, but I enjoy the entire album. Perfect for an afternoon of relaxing with some good music and it won't put you to sleep.
aka "apollo's Banquet" watch out!.......2006-10-05
I can say that this was a surprise, and it's my fault for not checking the contents track by track. This is a re-issue of Apollo's banquet, and also a re-issue of the same from yet another name! I've had Apollo'w banquet for a long time. Somehow, I thought this CD would be mixed consort English music. Not so, it's mostly violin + cittern/ continuo.
Under the name "apollo's banquet" it's been a favorite of mine for years- very good division violin work, very nice improv too. This is top notch.
Nevertheless, beware! $6 for this disk is a real bargain- but it's still too pricey if you've already got it on your shelf! It seems this series is a fabulous value- I have the Italian renaissance dan ces vol 2 too, and it is also superb performace practice.
This series is a great way to buy excellent performances on the cheap- just watch out in case you already have it!
You may not want this if . . . ........2006-03-26
Personally, I found the music a bit slow and subdued. Not what one typically thinks of country dance music being like. However, the reason I rate it so low is because of the deception on the part of the producer/manufacturer/packager/whatever of this cd. This CD is actually the same - track for track, down to the timings - as "English Country Dances from Playford's Dancing Master". But this CD is deceptively attributed to the individual members of the band instead of naming the group, The Broadside Band. It is cheaper than the original cd, though. The short and sweet - if you have the Broadside Band cd, you don't want this one.
Delightful Music-making!.......2005-08-27
These selections of English Country Dances from the publications of the English music publisher John Playford are recorded and played so well as to relegate any criticism to spoiled grapes. Perhaps a musicologist might carp on some fine points, but then again probably not - musicologists actually enjoy a good tune, too. There is a nice couple pages of notes by Jack Ashworth on the historical background of the music, and a further short page by David Douglass on how he envisioned the 'nature' of several of the pieces. There is also a French translation following the English notes. Seven instruments are mixed higgledy-piggledy as the performers deem best - a copy of a 1652 Amati Violin, and copies of a Theorbo, a Cittern, a 16-string harp, an Italian Double Harp, an Irish Harp, and a Guitar. For the curious Douglass plays the violin only, but offers playing consanguineous with his name.
Among the choices cut 15 - "Long Cold Nights" - seems almost New Age in its evocation of the heavens: one might be in Big Sur looking up at the stars. The many other pieces come in divers moods and tempi, with great care given to which instruments are employed. It's difficult to imagine anyone disliking such engaging tunes, such joy in their making. The recording is of course digital so it helps to have a system capable of taming the inevitable string stridencies, but that said - if you like music from this period, or are curious, this CD offers a wonderful selection.
Buy it!!!.......2003-09-12
This is a great cd! Very lively at times; very mellow at other times - but all tracks are wonderful interpretations of traditional songs by highly talented musicians....and who can argue with the price? BUY THIS CD if you are at all into this type of music!

Mandolin and fiddle maestro Sam Bush helped pioneer "newgrass" in the 1970s by deftly mixing and matching traditional bluegrass influences with contemporary rock, reggae, and jazz sensibilities. On this outing, Bush is joined by a tight-knit coterie of fellow super-pickers--including Brad Davis (guitar), Jon Randall (vocals and guitar), Byron House (electric and acoustic bass), and Chris Brown (drums)--to forge a similarly exhilarating, genre-bending blend of traditional and cutting-edge influences. These 11 masterful cuts--ranging from a spirited, old-timey reprise of Grandpa Jones's "Eight More Miles to Louisville" to a soaring instrumental extravaganza called "The Mahavishnu Mountain Boys"--are every bit as soulful as they are super-charged. --Bob Allen
Customer Reviews:
Another great album from Sam.......2005-07-30
This is another great solo effort from Sam Bush. In fact, all his solo albums are extremely strong, going all the way back to "Howling..." or "Late as Usual". There isn't a throw-away track on this CD, and like someone said before, it's hard to imagine anyone not enjoying this collection. I was lucky enough to see this crew perform in Memphis around October 2004, and the music was possibly even better live. I've seen Sam a number of times live, and it's worth any drive you have to make to see him play. As a very amature banjo player, I wish I had enough talent to pick with these guys for 10 minutes!! Anyway, buy this album (just buy ALL of Sam's and NGR's stuff) and enjoy....LDG
My Goodness, What an Album!!.......2004-06-20
Well, if you like Sam Bush, then this is a no-brainer. Simply put, this is a great collection of both traditional and not-so-traditional bluegrass, etc. that almost anyone can enjoy. To be sure, you can hear strains of Sam's New Grass Revival heritage on certain songs, but there is a lot of great traditional picking as well. "Eight More Miles to Louisville" will satisfy any bluegrass traditionalist. My favorites are "A Better Man" and the title song, "King of the World," which are a little more contemporary but I found rather moving and personally satisfying. All in all, one of the best albums I've bought in awhile. Highly recommended!!!
Sam Bush: King of My World (Sugar Hill).......2004-06-18
Sam Bush is a musician's musician and a really nice guy (I've met the man). His playing is deeply rooted in American traditional music. Sam doesn't let tradition stand in the way of expressing a fresh look at his world, which he is the king of.
If you are talking tasteful tunes with mando lines "like butter": Sam is the king. Look at it this way, Sam is driving his rambler while we ride shotgun for a little fun, see the sights, and maybe take in a ball game.
So here is a question: What do Grandpa Jones and Johnny Clegg have in common? Answer: they've both written tunes played by Sam Bush on this album. "Eight More Miles to Louisville" and "Spirit is the Journey" as interpreted by Mr. Bush are as fresh as Rocky mountain snow (near Telluride of course).
The backing players fit like a glove and include Byron House (bass), Brad Davis (guitar) and Jon Randall (vocals and guitar) who generally tour with Sam. These guys are tight and it really shows especially on the instrumental numbers co-authored by the group "Puppies `N Knapsacks" and also on Sam's original "Bananas".
Sam borrows from one of his favorite songwriters, Jeff Black, for two tunes on this CD namely the title cut and "They're Going to Miss Me When I'm Gone". Sam really seems to find his voice with Jeff Black songs.
The final stop on the CD is the heartland with a swing tune tribute to his beloved St. Louis Cardinals and their shortstop, Ozzie Smith in the "The Wizard of Oz". This reminds me of swing tunes that came out in 1950s that paid tribute to players and teams of the era and of Steve Goodman's musical tributes to the Chicago Cubs.
As someone once said, Sam never misses a step, more fun that a barrel of monkeys, and always lets you sit back and enjoy the ride.
Thanks for the wonderful ride Sam!
Passion, energy, spirit and even with a little humor.......2004-04-18
Playing Time - 49:59 -- Sam Bush has always been somewhat of a maverick, an independently minded musician who isn't necessarily constrained by the traditional sideboards of bluegrass. While many appreciate his innovation and creativity, some will always struggle with and question his use of drums, piano, organ and electric instruments on this project. My advice to them is to take their blinders off. Bush associates himself with some excellent musicians, and the songs aren't so far out there that this is rock music after all. He follows his own muse and explores a jamgrass territory into Americana that melds new sounds with old, spicing them with electric flavors that invigorate his acoustic spirit. His primary picking pals include Jon Randall Stewart (guitar), Byron House (bass), Chris Brown (drums), Brad Davis (vocals, guitar, BradBender). Others that appear include Reese Wynans (piano or organ, two cuts), Andrea Zonn (fiddle, one cut) and Larry Atamanuik (drums, one cut).
Bush collaborated last year with David Grisman on the project, "Hold on, We're Strummin'," but it's been about four years since Sam put out his last solo album called "Ice Caps: Peaks of Telluride" in 2000. "King of My World" pulls from many genres from bluegrass to jazz, reggae to country. The mountain consciousness is most apparent on a couple tracks (Puppie `N Knapsacks, Eight More Miles to Louisville) that Sam even picks banjo on. I never knew he could do that. "Bananas" is an instrumental with a distinctly Latin jazz feeling. The band really rocks on "Spirit is the Journey" written by Johnny Clegg, while the bluesy downstrokes on his mandolin drive Ed Snodderly's composition, "Magestic." The album even closes with a swingy self-penned "The Wizard of Oz," presumably a tribute to the great St. Louis Cardinals shortstop, Ozzie Smith. An avid Cardinals fan, Sam collects baseball memorabilia, has a dog named "Ozzie," and even performed the national anthem in 2002 at a Cardinals home game.
Besides mandolin and banjo, Bush also offers some hot licks on slide mandolin, slide guitar, guitar, and fiddle to various tracks. Six of the eleven songs each span five minutes or longer, and this gives the arrangements plenty of room to breathe with dynamics and instrumental improvisations. Speaking of eleven, that's the age that Bush started playing mandolin. By age 19, he was involved with the New Grass Revival which turned a lot of heads until their breakup in 1990. Bush, of course, went on to be a member of Emmylou Harris' "Nash Ramblers" from 1990-94, then toured for a year with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Bush's first solo album hit the streets in 1996, and "King of My World" is now his fourth solo release. He also maintains a very hectic schedule of touring, as well as recording with others.
"King of My World" continues his high-energy unfettered approach to music that refuses to be restricted by certain boundaries. While a staunchly traditional bluegrass fan will find little to please them here, others with more open musical minds will realize that Sam Bush's eclectic music is impeccably performed with passion, energy, spirit and even with a little humor thrown in. The Bluegrass King has Done it Again!!!!.......2004-04-15
Known as the founder and a pioneer in the Bluegrass revival this album does nothing but reinforce that title. With this album Sam continues to create music that exceeds all expectations. Sam has always been known for his diversity, and the seamless way he blends a variety of musical styles. Although each song is of a different musical styling the album is so well constructed that it smoothly takes you from one track to the next and makes the whole album flow. Some of my favorite songs include classic rockin Bluegrass tracks like "They're Going to Miss me when I'm Gone" which includes Sam Bush trademark ripping mandolin solo. Some of my other favorites are the reggae infused "Spirit is the Journey" and the fun loving big bang/swing influenced "The Wizard of Oz". I highly recommend this album!!!!!
