About the Artist
Stony Sixma is a life long resident of the state of Florida. He was born in DeLand and raised on a ranch outside the city. Stony's love for the entertainment insudtry started at a very early age. As a child, Stony would sit and watch his older brother perform as the lead guitarist in a local band. He knew then that he too, wanted to be in the entertainment field. At eight years old Stony began piano lessons and soon after started playing guitar. He began by performing in local talent shows and at social functions. Stony attended DeLand High School while he played guitar in a rock band and began song writing. He has written and performs over fifty original songs.

After Graduating from high school, Stony attended Daytona Beach Community College where he studied music for two years. At twenty, intrigued by the popularity and success of the band Alabama, his music style began to shift toward country music.

Stony describes his music as "UP BEAT with a down-to-earth country flavor that most people can definitely relate to."

Building on her Grammy-nominated collections of classic women's blues from the '20s through the '40s (Richland Woman Blues, 2001, and Sweet Lovin' Ol' Soul, 2005), jazz/blues chanteuse Maria Muldaur returns with Naughty, Bawdy & Blue. It's an apt title for a sassy group of songs originally recorded by Victoria Spivey (one of Muldaur's mentors), Alberta Hunter, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and other female urban blues stylists the singer describes as "liberated socially, financially, and most of all sexually from the confines and mores of the times." Backed by the perfect fit of James Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band, who often performed with Sippie Wallace and whose sound seems to have time-traveled without alteration, Muldaur moves through a dozen vaudeville blues numbers with integrity and authenticity, and never resorts to campy riffs or faux black dialect. Her expressive soprano has taken on a depth and heft through the years, and she's smart to deliver such suggestive lines as "I love the way he whips my cream" (from "Handy Man") or "He's a deep-sea diver with a stroke that can't go wrong" (from Smith's "Empty Bed Blues") with a subtle wink, preferring to let an insinuating trumpet chase home the joke. The album finds its highlight with "Separation Blues," a duet with Bonnie Raitt, who introduced Wallace to new audiences on her tours of the '70s and '80s. Muldaur and Raitt--corduroy and burlap--harmonize with the ease that comes from decades of friendship, and from the joy of preserving and appreciating one of America's purest musical forms. --Alanna Nash

4 out of 5 stars Urban Blues w/ Maria in top form.......2007-06-05

Thankfully there is someone carrying the torch to the Next Generation of music lovers. I can say, "Gee, I remember when I heard Alberta Hunter sing 'Handy Man' live in New York City." and count my blessings. Now there is someone who will keep these songs alive for others to discover.

The Chicago Jazz Band is one of the best bands I've heard in ages and they work hand in hand with Maria Muldaur. It's a shame this is just a single cd - they have enough material for a double, I'm sure.

I know there is that DRIVE to hit the ultimate cut of a song, but I think a second version of Empty Bed Blues wasn't quite necessary. I keep thinking there were two or three other songs that could have been used. Coming in at just a shade over 45 min. seems like a big tease.

Coming down to it - she's the best blues singer, she gathers the best musicians and arrangers around her. She just oozes sex appeal and she knows just what she's singing about.

Hopefully she's got a Naughty, Bawdy & Blues Pt. 2 up her sleeves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tribute with Awesome Backup.......2007-06-01

This album is great. I discovered her music back in college in the 90s, and she really is one of the best blues singers around. . .and amazingly productive putting out an album a year since Louisiana Love Call came out in 1992. She has done all types of genres of jazz and blues.

Naughty Bawdy & Blue is one of the best. The songs are mostly uptempo with a great backup of trumpets, trombones, clarinets, saloon style piano, etc. It is urban upscale blues of the 1920s and 1930s, a tribute to the great female singers of the era.

The songwriting is terrific. You don't get this kind of smart, bawdy, and often moving type of songwriting today. The Chicago Jazz Band brings an infectious mood to the songs.

In short: This is a really fun album of great songs, singing, and musicianship. I guarantee you will like it. It is one gem after another to the point you are disappointed when the album ends. My favorites: Down Home Blues, Up the Country Blues, Separation Blues (great duet with Bonnie Raitt), New Orleans Hop Scot Blues, TB Blues, One Hour Mama (very funny), and Yonder Come the Blues.

I cannot imagine anyone not liking this album. It makes me want to seek out the original singers and songwriters of these songs, which is exactly what a tribute album should do.

3 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-05-25

Just love the delicious old-time racey blues. The harmony with Bonnie Raite is so tight.

PAYING HER DUES, AGAIN

If you ever wondered who, if anyone, was going to carry on the tradition of great female blues singers now that the likes of Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Sippy Wallace and Memphis Minnie have long been gone from the scene look no further. As I pointed out in a review of her last album Sweet Lovin' Ol' Soul Maria Muldaur has paid her dues and here she is doing it all over again. This is the third album in series that she started in 2002 to cover the old great blues singers. In the present album she covers the above-mentioned singers and others in a style in which they would surely recognize their style. These are the classic female blues singers of the 1920's and 30's. Maria is in fast company but she does not miss a beat.

Pay particular attention to her rendition of Victoria Spivey's Handy Man and the covers of Sippy Wallace songs. Damn if Maria does not sound like that unfortunately not well known singer (Maria also covered a Wallace classic Don't Advertise Your Man on her last album).

I would also add that I had the pleasure of hearing some of the cuts on this album live in concert by Maria in Cambridge (one of her old stomping grounds in her youthful days with the Kweskin Jug Band back in the sixties) and she can still belt them out. If there is any truth in the assumption that former President Clinton was our first `black' president no one can deny that Maria is our first `black' classic blues singer. And has the stage presence, to boot. The tradition lives. Listen on.

If there's such a thing as narrow-focus versatility, this set's a prime example. Duke Robillard has cut jazz, swing, rock, and instrumental albums, and he was Tom Waits's 2006 tour guitarist. Now the virtuoso returns to his true love--the music that first brought him acclaim as founder of Roomful of Blues--with two CDs that explore all aspects of the style. Dirty Chicago grinds like "You're Killin' Me Baby" tumble into gentle swingers like Robillard's take on T-Bone Walker's "Treat Me So Lowdown" and the hushed Wes Montgomery-influenced "Stoned." He conjures a raw Mississippi-juke-joint sound to interpret "Everything Is Broken," a tune penned by another former employer, Bob Dylan. And electric and acoustic guitars, plus some lute-like sax, are used to magnify the hoodoo vibe of Waits's "Low Side of the Road." Robillard also experiments with his voice, dropping to his lowest register to echo Bo Diddley's brawny growl as he covers the rock godfather's "Who Do You Love." These 23 numbers culminate with "Stretchin'," a nine-minute guitar-and-organ showcase that evokes the soul-jazz style invented by Jimmy Smith, concluding a "World" tour that'll please blues guitar lovers. --Ted Drozdowski

Corb Lund and his crackerjack band, the Hurtin' Albertans, lassoed a pen full of awards in the recent Canadian Country Music Awards (and the Western Canadian Music Awards), and for anyone just coming to Lund's brand of ranchin' and ropin' tunes, this album (ironically recorded in Nashville) serves as a fine introduction. The baby-faced Canuck blends a prairie upbringing with 10 years as an indie rocker in his last group, the Smalls, and throws in a smattering of acoustic blues, folk, rockabilly, ragtime, and country-rock to balance his traditional cowpoke leanings. While his subject matter generally hangs around the chutes and the plains, or follows the white line down the highway, Lund is so lyrically and rhythmically inventive that special guests Ian Tyson, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and Riders in the Sky's Ranger Doug and Too Slim probably begged to ride herd. Put your boots up, pull out a can of chew, and get acquainted with the brightest new star under the western moon. --Alanna Nash

I first got hooked on Corb Lund after purchasing his last release ( Five Dollar Bill) and have been anticipating more.
Well, "Hair in my Eyes Like a Highland Steer", does not dissapoint to say the least.
Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans mix the introspective ( The Truth Comes Out, The Rodeo's Over) with the witty ( The Truck Got Stuck, Hurtin' Albertan) to produce a great album full of hooks you will be humming all day.
As a Texan and a rancher, I find it reassuring our "neighbors to the North" share many of our experiences and outlooks. "The Truck Got Stuck" in particular caught my ear, as I have had similar experiences in muddy pastures ( minus the canola seed.)
While these are mainly "cowboy" songs, I think anyone with a love of the West and rural life will find them enjoyable.

I heard Corb Lund described as Canada's answer to Cake, but that's not really true. The Corb Lund band is as rooted in Alberta as Cake is in California, and both have smart lyrics, but (even though I don't much like country music) I have to give the nod to this album. Great musical hooks, wonderful lyrics, songs that get stuck in your head and make you smile for days afterward.

I think I'd compare Corb Lund more to Steve Earle, with a catchier bass/banjo line. BRILLIANT album.

Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl are among blues guitar's hottest pistols, but their first studio union is no showdown. Although Robillard is steeped in all aspects of technique and Earl is a pure "soul" player, their styles overlap in the Texas and Chicago schools, which grant both giants plenty of space for elegant and biting single-note solos, daredevil string-bending, and chugging rhythms. Robillard sings two numbers and "Mighty" Sam McClain, whose red-clay voice is the perfect foil for their emotional fretwork, guests on Earl's heartbroken epic "A Soul That's Been Abused." The real mojo, however, is in the instrumentals, where these virtuosos who emerged from the New England scene to achieve worldwide acclaim maintain a beatific dialogue. They both swing like T-Bone Walker on "Two Bones and a Pick" and trade sliding chords and slide guitar licks on "Zeb's Thing," which dips into down-home Mississippi grit. The highlight is "My Tears," on which Robillard sings sad and dirty, Earl turns sustained notes into Zen koans, and both players stretch their flair for dynamics and brilliant, unhurried, lyrical playing to its limit. Fans of blues guitar need to hear this album. --Ted Drozdowski

If you've ever liked the T-Bone Walker style, or drooled over the pure T-Bone licks that both Ronnie and Duke have graced us with over the years, "Two Bones and a Pick" is eight minutes of pure jump-blues-guitar-heaven. I can, and do listen to this for hours on end. If any two white guys have got that jump-blues-guitar-thang down, it's these two. T-Bone is grinning like a Cheshire cat.

5 out of 5 stars A guitar duel with production and quality music to back it up.......2006-04-27

Unlike some artists who get together and try not to outplay each other, i.e. not show each other up, these two planned the session well ahead that allows each to show their virtousity against each other without the latter.

The production, songs chosen and performance from other backing musicians are brilliant.

If you like guitar duels in the jump blues fashion, this is a recording to buy.

    5 out of 5 stars Royal Rhapsody.......2006-03-09

This disc combines the considerable talents of two premier guitar players within the Blues genre. The Duke (Robillard) and the (Ronnie) Earl demonstrate why they are deserving members of Blues guitar royalty. It has been well documented that this effort is not a showdown between rivals or a stage to demonstrate one-up-manship but rather two friends kicking back to jam back and forth and effectively intertwine their extensive expertise. I can only offer that this fine effort is seamless, seeming to be an overall masterpiece versus a collection of individual songs. The instrumental flow and sequencing of the songs is superb. The songs don't seem as lengthy as they are, avoiding the tediousness that sometimes befalls such efforts. Quite to the contrary, the hour plus of excellent music contained within seems to fly by leaving the listener wanting more. The two players pass the baton back and forth in an effortless manner, almost overly conscious as to not dominate the other's time. Ronnie and Duke demonstrate they are passionate craftsmen and worthy members of the upper class. Mighty Sam McClain's plaintive plea on "A Soul That's Been Abused" will only leave you wanting more. Ronnie Earl's slide guitar work on "Zeb's Thing" is also worth special mention. This is a can't miss addition to anyone's collection.

1 out of 5 stars The Duke Meets The Earl.......2006-02-20

I bought this album on pure speculation it was an Amazon recommondation and was uncharted waters for me. Owning around 200 blues albums with close to 100 of them being lps. I had never listened to either of these guys. Read the reviews and seemed like it would be a good venture. Received my cd figuring it would be like most blues albums and would take several listens before it would start throwing its arms around me. Wrong! This is one of the few albums I own that nails you right out of the box! It has been in my car stereo for around a month now and shows no indication of getting old.The first three tracks are non stop adrenalin guitar work with number three at just over 15 minutes just being a total piece of work. Smooth like a well aged whiskey. The final track with guest singer is one of the more haunting blues pieces I've ever heard. It's one of the few pieces I know that actually brings you to the edge of reverse blues and makes you feel bad this track is also in the 15 minute time slot too. All and all you can just let this cd run and it becomes nice back gound music to what ever it is you are doing. All in the way classical music does. I'd be surpised if any one really listening to this could give a bad rap! This is a real guitar players record.

    4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2006-01-25

First off; I really appreciate artists or labels that give you at least 60 minutes of play time and don't cut out lengthy guitar solos. This CD certainly delivers in this regard as Ronnie Earl and the Duke trade guitar jams in creative duets for a solid 70 plus minutes. This is a close 5 star recommendation but it isn't a classic and it isn't groundbreaking; although I would think some reviewers would seriously disagree with that point. It's just damn good music by two pros whose different styles compliment one another. Highly recommended.

As the title implies, Guitar Groove-a-Rama is a showcase for Duke Robillard and his guitar collection. It allows him to both flex his chops in a variety of styles and display his impressive set of instruments--on the cover and in the grooves. Although he has recorded jazz discs, the founding member of Roomful of Blues is primarily a blues player, and that genre grounds the majority of this crackling release. It's also a jumping-off place for songs that reference twang (a peppy version of Bob Dylan's "Down Along the Cove"), jazzy lounge/gospel ("Sunday Mornin'"), and tough swamp ("Sewed Up"), plus a "Tequila"-styled surf take on Sonny Boy Williamson's "No Way Out" and even a swinging instrumental rendition of "Danny Boy" with a surprise Beatlesque ending.

The album's 16-minute centerpiece, "Blues-a-Rama," is a magnificent vehicle for Robillard. He uses a standard slow blues to introduce and play licks in the style of about a dozen influential guitarists, from the usual suspects such as Buddy Guy and Freddie, Albert, and B.B. King to the slightly more obscure likes of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. That track, like this terrific album, is a mini history lesson in blues guitar that every lover of the genre will enjoy and newcomers can use as a handy course. --Hal Horowitz

4 out of 5 stars Guitar Groove-A-Rama, my review from Barcelona.......2007-06-04

What a great guitar record, totally based in the "twelve compasses rhythm", in the Blues, with some shades of jazz. I would only leave aside some free kind of bolero in the tune "Danny boy" and a kind of tango "Dark eyes", in spite of the nice playing Doug James's baritone sax and Al Basile's cornet but I thing out of place in a Blues record . The rest of the record is simply magnificent. The album highlight is perhaps "Blues A Rama", in which Robillard pays homage to all his mentors and idols of Chicago Blues, New Orleans Blues, Texas Blues and so on... like Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Jones, Johnny Guitar Watson, T-Bone Walker, the three kings B.B.King, Freddie King y Albert King and the possibly current top Chicago Blues performer, the great Buddy Guy. In a few words, this record is a must to all Blues lovers and even more if they love guitar music, of course. My evaluation is 4,5 stars. Very outstanding.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2007-03-13

This CD is in heavy rotation in my player.Duke hits on so many different styles of blues and the disc really flows with great continuity.I love cranking it up while sitting on the back porch on a warm summer evening. The 17 minute "Blues-o-Rama" is one of my favorites. If you are a fan of the blues then give this album a try.

4 out of 5 stars Great album, with a notable exception.......2006-10-18

Overall, a wonderful comtemporary blues album, although more in the "blues light" vein than anything real down and dirty.

The one glaring exception is "Danny Boy". What was Duke thinking when he did this? This song just doesn't make it as an electric blues number and his arrangement and playing on this track fall short of the performances on the rest of CD.

5 out of 5 stars Give Duke a Handy Award for this one.......2006-09-12

I have several discs from this guitar musicologist but I have never seen him live until this year at Chrome in Las Vegas. What a treat. When he debuted "Sunday Mornin'" from his latest, I was hooked on this one. This disc allows the listener to sample a wide range of styles from the greats of blues, so students....a perfect contemporary primer. Start groovin'!

5 out of 5 stars Duke hits on all cylinders.......2006-08-12

I remember seeing Duke play at the old Lone Star Club on 5th Avenue in Manhattan about twenty years ago. He was opening for the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and it was an unforgettable night. He opened with a perfect rendition of "Honky Tonk". You could see and feel the love in his playing that night. I have been a fan of his ever since. He put out a couple of albums with his great trio, and I still own both on LP.

This album is like a big hug from Duke for all his fellow blues and roots music lovers. I always find Duke's other albums enjoyable (I particularly like his guitar duets with Herb Ellis), but this one is different in that it embraces you and doesn't let go. Beautifully engineered too.

I think it is worthy of a Grammy. Thanks Duke.

5 out of 5 stars Time to switch to Corb Lund.......2006-02-23

What's extraordinary with country music, is that owing to its large diversity, it allows us to discover bands like the Corb Lund Band. This Canadian band around Corb Lund is really surprising, their compositions are varied and original, telling a world they know well : the ranchers. Sheer bliss! That's the country music we like, sometimes influenced by whiskey with the splendid "Time To Switch To Whiskey" or the Canadan prairies with "Short Native Grass". 13 songs likely to give you a nice change of surroundings and really cheer you up for good. It's a piece of his soul that Corb Lund offers in this album, well, four generations of rodeo riders have left their marks. The Honky-Tonk influence is undisputable, but it is hard to classify this album where bluegrass stands next to more modern country tunes. That will keep a lot of people satisfied. This album is to listen to with one's ears as much as with one's heart. A real treat!

5 out of 5 stars Five Dollar Bill.......2005-11-14

One of a very few original, contemporary cowboy songwriters, Corb Lund's "Five Dollar Bill" is well-worth twenty bucks Canadian to anyone who can appreciate hands-on humor and imaginative musical scores. His lyrics are not laments about how things used to be, nor twenty-gallon rhymes for the Nashville scene, but upbeat and clever perspectives from the wide-open and semi-tamed spaces of Alberta that work just as well south of the Canadian border. Halter in hand, his ode to a hard-to-catch mare, "She Won't Come To Me," is a jewel while "Roughest Neck Around" walks the politically incorrect edge of the oilfields with due respect. Corb has an unusual way of incorporating introspection and humor that celebrates life, and he can put together fun songs like "Time To Switch To Whiskey","(Gonna) Shine Up My Boots" and "Buckin' Horse Rider" that never get boring. I've packed this CD in the pickup for ten months straight and continue to marvel at its originality that seems to fit any ranch landscape.

      5 out of 5 stars One of Canada's Finest.......2003-08-01

Corb Lund brings us country with a unique flavour. If you ever get the chance to see him live, you'd understand exactly what he can give to the audience. This stripped down album captures Corb's sound perfectly. Nothing interferes with his voice and guitar, the production of the album allows Corb's true musicality to shine through. "Five Dollar Bill" is a fun album; a great album to drive, drink, party, relax, (hopefully not at the same time). Corb captues Alberta and the prairies like no other artist can. You know he's well aqainted to the big sky of the prairies, the open roads, and the partying spirit we all cherish. This album is probably one of the best country albums I have had the pleasure to listen to. I highly recommend this addictive album to anybody, especially if you're not a country fan. You just might find yourself hooked to Corb's wonderfully catchy voice, and his simple, strong songs.

In so many ways, this offering from Maria Muldaur--her 25th--is a surprise. To begin with, there's the overall rootsy feel, with a very classic, traditional aesthetic governing most of the material--unusual indeed for a vocalist whose Meet Me Where They Play the Blues and Music for Lovers were rooted in much more of a pop sensibility. Then again, since Muldaur started out with folksy jug bands, often in the company of ex-husband and modern folkster Geoff Muldaur, maybe this return to the roots isn't too surprising.

But then, there's her choice of guest stars; Richland Woman Blues is as much about Muldaur's collaborators as it is about her own voice. Some of them are obvious, given the album's bent: there are two excellent duets with Alvin Youngblood Hart, one with Taj Mahal, and a couple of tracks featuring Californian blues guitarist Roy Rogers (no, not that one!). But there's also keyboard work from Dave Mathews on two tracks, a devotional duet with Bonnie Raitt, and a rich, throaty duet with Tracy Nelson, in which both women acquit themselves admirably. While a departure from her usual idiom, this is a sound, solid entry in Muldaur's body of work, where she holds her own with a cast of distinguished guests. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Timeless and priceless.......2006-12-24

I've been tracking the music of Tracy Nelson and when I saw her name listed on the credits I had to give this album a shot -- this body of work is timeless; I know it's been out for years but the songs themselves have stood the test of time and Ms. Muldaur has done them justice. So has everyone on the album.

Acoustic blues, superb musicians and vocalists - you need this album in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Richland Woman, Indeed.......2006-07-06

Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The origin of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.

Mississippi John Hurt continues to live in this classic rendition of Richland Woman. Maria makes it come alive in a much different way than he did and while most of his work is not as well covered by other artists as his own renditions this is an exception. I believe that it really is more of a women's blues song in the Bessie Smith- Memphis Minnie (whose material is included here also) tradition. It continues to amaze me how many artists are still paying kudos to the talents of that old, departed country bluesman. If you get a chance compare this version with the one she did with Jim Kweskin's Jug Band. Except for a maturing of the voice (a plus here) she has still got it. Some of the other material is a little uneven but you will get your money's worth.

      5 out of 5 stars Basic Blues.......2003-01-31

After having ordered this cd I let languish on the shelf for four weeks. After being told that this was some great blues listening I decided to crack it open and give it a listen.

I was absolutely amazed at the blues put down here. This music is some of the most simple, basic, down-right good blues that I have listened to. Very simple accompanyments and strong blues by Ms. Muldaur and her guests. I really can't do justice to how wonderful these blues were and how easy to listen to.

      5 out of 5 stars Blues 2 Make U Happy.......2002-06-26

After Maria Muldaur's 3 amazing CDs "Fanning the Flames," "Southland of the Heart," & "Meet Me Where They Play The Blues," and Telarc's conglomerated mishmash of these 3 CDs into "Music for Lovers," Maria released this gorgeous "Richland Woman Blues" on Stony Plain. What a treat!

The opening title track is a sexy blues # with John Sebastian's happy guitar, "Give me red lipstick & a pot of red rouge." Her voice squeals with the emotion of a woman who's so worked up she can't eat, can't sleep and can't stand still on "Grasshoppers in My Pillow," "The man I've been loving for 20 years said he don't want me no more." Bonnie Raitt's voice blends joyfully as Raitt's guitar plucks the melody on "It's A Blessing." "Me & My Chauffeur Blues" is playfully naughty with Roy Rogers' tasty guitar. Dave Matthews lends a great jelly roll piano on "Put It Right Here," "The bee gets the honey & brings it to the comb, else he's kicked out of his home sweet home." Alvin "Youngblood" Heart sounds like Loudon Wainwright III on "I'm Going Back Home." "My Man Blues" unfolds like scene from a play with Maria in a cat fight with Angela Strehli. Angela sings, "That's my man & that's a fact"; Maria sasses back, "I ain't seen your named printed up & down his back." My favorite track is the peppy melody of "In My Girlish Days." For me, Tracy Nelson sounds churchy rather than bluesy on Bessie Smith's "Far Away Blues." The sweet roll of a Jimmy Reed-style guitar propels "I Got to Move." "Lonesome Desert Blues" has great Dave Matthews piano, "Temptation he can't refuse, that man of mine I know I'm bound to lose." Taj Mahal joins in on "Soul of a Man." I think I've heard this tune listed as "Angel Band," but "I Belong to that Band" makes you want to rise up & praise the Lord, "Hallelujah, I belong to that band, halleloo..." The CD concludes with a reprise with Bonnie Raitt. This CD is great both for Maria's artistry and passion and because it makes the blues live much as it must have been sung by Memphis Minnie in her day. The grammy nomination was well deserved. Don't miss out!

5 out of 5 stars MARIA PAYS HER DUES.......2007-01-29

I have often noted that when white women cover blues songs done by the old classic black singers like Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith, Big Mama Thornton and the like some undefined ingredient is missing. Call it `soul' or the `miseries' or whatever you like but somehow the depths of a song are generally not reached. Not so here, as Maria Muldaur presents the second of an anticipated three albums covering some great classics of old time barrel house blues. (The first album was Richland Woman's Blues). Bessie Smith's Empty Bed Blues sticks out as do her duos with the legendary Taj Mahal. As Maria points out in her liner notes some of these songs here are ones that she wanted to do earlier in her career but was either talked out or could not do justice to then. But now Maria knows she has paid her dues, I know she has paid her dues, and you will too. Listen.

5 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Blues Albums.......2006-06-13

Muldaur keeps making blues albums and they are all good, but this is certainly one of the her better efforts. I was never a blues fan until I heard Maria belt them out. She knows how to do it and I would say this is blues for people who don't like blues. Her course voice is ideal for this kind of music and the accompanying band and instruments in all her albums (including this one) is outstanding. The duets are excellent too; she knows the right way to sing a duet. In short, it is just hard to find anything wrong with this album. A meaty 12 tracks with one song lasting over 6 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars How sweet it is! Highest recommendations........2006-02-11

I haven't reviewed an album here in ages, but was moved to do so after hearing Maria Muldaur's wonderful new album, Sweet Lovin' Ol' Soul.

Simply enough, this is one of the best albums in any genre that I've heard in ages. The album pays tribute to some of Maria's blues heroines of the 1920s and 1930s, but the music itself sounds incredibly fresh (not dated or forced) and the lyrics have a great deal of timeless/contemporary resonance. All of the tracks shine for different reasons, but her duet with Taj Mahal on Ain't What You Used To Have is a real showstopper, with the combination of its very funny lyrics and their soulful, poignant vocals. Throughout the album, the expressiveness of Maria's vocals will absolutely take your breath away, and the instrumental backing and production on each track is top-notch.

My very highest recommendations for this one. (Just hurry up and buy it already!) :)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful.......2005-09-30

In this day when the blues has been largely forgotten or, when remembered, is remembered only as something that was played by skinny little english guys with really loud guitars, this CD is truly a gift. The songs, the playing, the singing are timeless, fresh, comforting, charming--in a word, wonderful. The songs reach deep into american root music, but are played and sung as naturally and enthusiastically as if they were written yesterday. The interplay, in particular, between Muldaur's voice and Del Rey's guitar on songs like I Am Sailin' is truly amazing. It's great driving music, it's great beach music, it's great music to play at your next cocktail party. It lifts the spirits in a very special and genuine way. If you want to hear some real music, played and sung about as well as anyone has ever played and sung it, you need to buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Maria and the blues.......2005-09-26

I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this album yet. Put simply, if you liked Maria's "Richland Woman Blues," you'll like this one as well. The new album's material comes from many of the same sources (e.g., Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith), and Maria is joined by many of her same friends (e.g., Taj Mahal, Alvin Youngblood Hart) as on the earlier album. "Richland Woman Blues" was, in my opinion, one of Maria's very best efforts, and "Sweet Lovin' Ol' Soul" is right up there with it. I probably prefer this new album ever so slightly, but that's just a matter of taste -- they really are cut from the same fine cloth.

5 out of 5 stars Ol' Eon never gets old.......2007-05-13

Although Sylvia sings background with him on this album, it is primarily a solo album. It signals a new direction for Ian as this is more of a country sound than one would normally expect to hear from Ian Tyson. But it is an excellent album that bears hearing over and over again. I haven't heard anything from Ian that I didn't enjoy so for me this is just another in a long line of great albums.

5 out of 5 stars Another good one.......2005-05-22

I like everything that Ian Tyson does. I've never heard anything that I don't like from him. His great voice prevails through this as in all the others. I like all of his styles from the Cowboy & Western to the folk. He is an incredible musician with an incredible voice and I think it's good that lately he's experimenting with other styles rather than sticking to the expected. His voice and his arrangements are great no matter what he does, and this is another GREAT one.

5 out of 5 stars Great to see again.......2004-09-24

This was Ian Tyson's first solo album, in '73-- and it's
a testament to his talent that to me it sounds as fresh today as ever. It's a bit more country than the cowboy/western focus of his later stuff, and maybe not quite as psychologically complex as some of the recent stuff on, say, 18 INCHES OF RAIN or LOST HERD, but great. And as always, that voice! Some great songs too like "If She Just Helps Me," "She's My Greatest Blessing," fun 'road' song "Great Canadian Tour" & classic "Spanish Johnny." Tyson rules :)!
