About the Artist
How a Grateful Dead tribute band is born from a single conversation, grows to become a local phenomenon, and then pays their dues to gain their OWN cult following is the story of Midnight Rain. It all started when two admittedly passionate deadheads started chatting in line for the J.G.B. Halloween show in 1994. Like most, the two discussed their passion for the Dead and made a typical musician promise to "get together and jam sometime". Fortunately the two (Tom & Barat) made good on their promise. They formed the precursor to the present band and begun playing throughout the New Jersey bar scene. Their innovative set mixed Dead tunes, "San Francisco music" and most importantly, original material.
As the band's popularity began to grow, an event that altered the band both personally and professionally occurred. Jerry Garcia was dead; a tragic loss for the band, as Garcia was the band's inspiration (and the very reason for forming). Professionally, however the band's popularity heightened. No more Grateful Dead shows proved to be more than loyal Deadheads could handle. A prestigious mention in Relix magazine listed Midnight Rain as an excellent option when choosing "Where to go now that there aren't no shows." Consequently, Midnight Rain began to fill the void for die-hard fans. Soon, the band came to represent the spirit of Garcia and his music. To this day in many ways, the band keeps the "long strange trip" going.
Tom and Barat's vision has come a long way. At their live shows, now the audience asks for Midnight Rain originals such as "Predicting the Weather" and "Hard World". It is also not uncommon for pal Buddy Cage (of the original New Riders of the Purple Sage) to sit in on pedal steel guitar.
Band members: Buddy Cage - Pedal Steel Guitar
Tom Brown - Guitar and Vocals
Ben Norgren - Bass, Guitar, and Vocals
Barat Dickman - Guitar and Vocals
