About the Artist
How a Grateful Dead tribute band is born from a single conversation, grows to become a local phenomenon, and then pays their dues to gain their OWN cult following is the story of Midnight Rain. It all started when two admittedly passionate deadheads started chatting in line for the J.G.B. Halloween show in 1994. Like most, the two discussed their passion for the Dead and made a typical musician promise to "get together and jam sometime". Fortunately the two (Tom & Barat) made good on their promise. They formed the precursor to the present band and begun playing throughout the New Jersey bar scene. Their innovative set mixed Dead tunes, "San Francisco music" and most importantly, original material.

As the band's popularity began to grow, an event that altered the band both personally and professionally occurred. Jerry Garcia was dead; a tragic loss for the band, as Garcia was the band's inspiration (and the very reason for forming). Professionally, however the band's popularity heightened. No more Grateful Dead shows proved to be more than loyal Deadheads could handle. A prestigious mention in Relix magazine listed Midnight Rain as an excellent option when choosing "Where to go now that there aren't no shows." Consequently, Midnight Rain began to fill the void for die-hard fans. Soon, the band came to represent the spirit of Garcia and his music. To this day in many ways, the band keeps the "long strange trip" going.

Tom and Barat's vision has come a long way. At their live shows, now the audience asks for Midnight Rain originals such as "Predicting the Weather" and "Hard World". It is also not uncommon for pal Buddy Cage (of the original New Riders of the Purple Sage) to sit in on pedal steel guitar.

Band members: Buddy Cage - Pedal Steel Guitar
Tom Brown - Guitar and Vocals
Ben Norgren - Bass, Guitar, and Vocals
Barat Dickman - Guitar and Vocals
Karen Lauber - Keyboards and Vocals
Scott Edelman - Drums and Percussion

5 out of 5 stars MR Rocks.......2006-04-15

How a band like Phish can become known as a Dead disciple when a REAL band like Midnight Rain exists is beyond me. The song writing is exquisite, the finger work is intricate, the moods are intimate. If you like intelligent but unpretentious music, try this disk.

5 out of 5 stars Gimme that great "Jerry feeling"!.......2000-05-05

This band ROCKS! I was a Deadhead until Jerry's untimely demise. I was crushed and thought I would never be able to jam to that type of music again. No one could ever sound that great. Boy, was I ever wrong! These guys know how to play. I have even used "Roam" as the theme music for my answering machine at home. I will be a loyal follower forever! Thank you, Midnight Rain, for giving us that great "Jerry feeling" again. I am looking foward to seeing this band live (again). THEY RULE!

This blissful set of songs remind me of hanging out with some good friends on a summer evening. Some of the tunes touched me immediately, while others took some time. But once I discovered the layout of the songs, I began to appreciate their texture, their personality. More specifically, "Roam" and "Predicting the Weather" happen to be some of my favorites. I could swear that Jerry speaks thru this band, and Dickman's fingerwork. Kudos to MR: May they carry on the music and spirit of their predecessors!

This is an amazing disk. I actually heard these guys in a little bar in NJ a while ago and their catchy tunes lodge in your head instantly. The title song, Predicting the weather will probably hit the charts as soon as the word's out on these guys. Good luck, Midnight Rain!
