Before Sgt. Pepper, no one seriously thought of rock music as actual art. That all changed in 1967, though, when John, Paul, George and Ringo (with "A Little Help" from their friend, producer George Martin) created an undeniable work of art which remains, after 30-plus years, one of the most influential albums of all time. From Lennon's evocative word/sound pictures (the trippy "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," the carnival-like "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite") and McCartney's music hall-styled "When I'm 64," to Harrison's Eastern-leaning "Within You Without You," and the avant-garde mini-suite, "A Day in the Life," Sgt. Pepper was a milestone for both '60s music and popular culture. --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.......2007-07-03

Good to hear this again after so many years. So many familiar songs on one album.

5 out of 5 stars The Genius of the Beatles.......2007-07-02

I can't decribe how much I love this album. I strongly believe that this is the groups best album and the best album that's ever been released. It's meant to be a studio album and not played live cause the guys were just so sick of touring, and it just was the only way with this new direction they were going in.

Paul came up with the concept after hearing about Elvis' Car went "On Tour." He thought that Sgt.Pepper would be an interesting concept to have these alter egos, so the music "wouldn't be songs that they necessarily wrote, but Sgt.Pepper did." The opening track "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and " the Reprise are really the only songs that directly match up with the concept, but the songs inbetween are just as close to perfect as one could get them to be.

With a little help from my Friends is great, but I personally like Joe Cocker's version better (the one from the Wonder Years.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was written after a drawing Julian lennon did and commonly thought of to be a drug song. It's one of my favorite Lennon songs. I love the intro with Paul's Bass, it's so simple but it just hits my ear drums the right way.

Getting Better is about the time when John was really falling for Yoko.
I love George's guitar in Fixing a Hole. It sounds a lot like (Ticket to Ride)

She's Leaving Home is a sad song that's got McCartney written all over it.
The following track has that weird surreal circus sound that's very fitting for the album. George Martin was great at helping the group come up with new sounds.

Within You Without You often goes unnoticed i think. It's a great song by George, that I think is great, the sound, the lyrics, etc.

Lovely Rita and When I'm Sixty four are nice little tunes but not very fitting i don't think, I would have liked to have seen Strawberry Fields be on this album cause it was the first track recorded during the sessions and because it's a great lennon song.

I like the randomness of Good Morning Good Morning. The title comes from a Corn Flakes commerical that John overheard when he was writting one day.

A Day in the Life is right after the reprise. I love how John and Pau tied in their separate parts with a great orchestral crescendo. Everything just goes together and it just works.

Definitely pick this album up if you haven't or download it or check it out at your library cause it's a must have for any music fan or art fan cause this is such an important album in music history and it changed music forever, no joke.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Beatles...Must Have.......2007-06-26

Takes me back to my youth. My kid loves it and doesn't believe I know all the songs and the order they are in on the CD.

5 out of 5 stars the album that changed the course of music..........2007-06-26

this album created the legacy of the 'concept' album. No longer was an album all about selling singles it was about the collective soul of the songs. Very few albums have more soul then Sgt Pepper's even after 40 years. The story goes that the Beatles were blown away by 'Pet Sounds' by the Beach Boys which in their minds far surpassed anything that popular music had come up with. Their answer to 'Pet Sounds' was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club. With the creative genuis of producer George Martin the Beatles put together an album that belongs in any aspiring Beatles fan collection. The White Album, Revolver and The Anthology are all great but this I think stands as the pinnacle of the Beatles music.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie.......2007-06-15

I don't think anyone has been able to match the creative genius of Sgt. Pepper's.

The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars Summer music is here --- again!.......2007-06-14

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-13

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

5 out of 5 stars Great Seller.......2007-06-12

Service was excellent and product in excellent condition. Would love to do business with seller again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sounds!.......2007-06-09

For those of us who remember crusing down the highway with the radio blasting, you can't beat this CD. You just have to sing along. It's a reminder of the times when music was exciting and fun. It's simply great music.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia.......2007-01-29

Every time I hear the music and songs it brings back memories of seeing the Broadway Show

1 out of 5 stars Not good at all.......2007-01-09

This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

The themes may be familiar, but the spirit is fresh: Working with his United Streets D-Boys of America crew, Young Jeezy finds his flow on Cold Summer and has no compunction about settling into it, even when that means his compadres Slick Pulla and Blood Raw get bumped to the side of the beat. From the hot, hooky "White Chick" (street code for cocaine, despite all the shout-outs to Christina Aguilera) to the bangin' second single "Corporate Thuggin'," this is Jeezy's baby--introspective, Jeez-ified joints like "I Keep Tellin' Myself" and "Live My Life" lay street life out for close inspection, and "Check" and "Focus" chug along to characteristically unstoppable choruses. Slick Pulla and Blood Raw step up most notably on "Get It Up" (Pulla) and "Respect the Shield" (Raw), and they give off an energy Jeezy clearly coasts on; overall, though, the title gets it right. Jeezy's doing the presenting here--he's a cool, capable leader in a unit whose players don't yet equal him, but probably will in the space of a few mixtapes. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars USDA: Hot Summer!!!.......2007-07-06

To eloborate on C. Allen's review... the tracks on this album are bangin'. Coming out of ATL, its refreshing to hear an album that doesnt have a dance to match every freakin song. Young Jeezy successfully kept the same winning formula from his debut album with USDA. He still keeps it as street on this album as he did with his underground mixtapes like "I Am The Street Dream" & "Snowman."

I heard he has a mixtape with Fabolous coming out called "When The North & South Collide Part 2"...should be a banger!!!

5 out of 5 stars Almost got it.......2007-07-04

I gave this a 5 star rating based on the fact it is a mixtape and not an album. If it was an album I would have given it 4 stars but that's besides the point. The USDA did their thing on this album and I'm happy Jeezy introduced them to the public on a commercial standpoint. Like all of other Jeezy related material, there is some solid production. If your not familiar with Jeezy or what he's about then the content of this mixtape may be over your head. Besides that, Jeezy drops some very good verses. Slick and Bloodraw need a little more time to develop.

Some songs I preferred were:
12. I Keep Tellin' Myself, 09. Live My Life, 07. Pam, and 05. Corporate Thuggin'.

5 out of 5 stars YESS SIR!.......2007-06-11

Y.G. iz my dogg on tha real, his beats and lyrics be madd ill-matic, when I heard tha first track I just knew It guna be off tha hook, if u ain't got it now...then wut tha hell r u doin!?!

2 out of 5 stars As a true jeezy fan I give this garbage 2 stars.......2007-06-08

Are you guys serious?!?!?! How can you rate this piece of junk of a cd anything higher than a 2. I am not hating on them, just being honest. There isn't one song on this cd where I caould listen to the whole thing. Jeezy has fell off. If want to hear some real Jeezy music before he got saturated with mainstream, listen to Thug Motivation 101, Boyz N Da Hood album, and the DJ Drama Trap or Die Mixtape.

5 out of 5 stars this cd is underrated.......2007-06-07

this cd is hot! at first i was skeptical because of a bad review but after hearing it for myself i realized the person that gave it a bad review probably never heard it. this is a slumper for all the people who have systems in their cars or not. im gonna bump this cd througout the summer and probably long after. there are plenty of good songs on this album like white girl, pam, throw this money, quickie, and the go getta remix is better than the original. i liked the consistency of the album and its one of those that you can play the whole way through. if your a jeezy fan then pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You'd Want.......2007-06-12

This is a great compilation of Donna Summer's works. If you're old enough, it'll take you back to your youth and fun times at the disco.
I thank the powers that be for this gift and reminder of how great Donna Summer is.

5 out of 5 stars very best of donna summer.......2007-05-14

its a double cd and it is excellent listening. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes fast music.

4 out of 5 stars I Luv Donna.......2007-04-06

Excellent CD! Donnas voice is timeless. The second CD is all 12" dance mixes. I forgot how great the MacArthur Park Suite was. If They included the Hot Stuff/Bad girls Mix (Anthology) in the CD, It would have got 5 stars from me!.

5 out of 5 stars Donna Summer Rocks!.......2007-01-10

Donna Summer is a Diva of all times. I listen to this CD
over and over again. Her vocals are outstanding and her music
is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars Donna Summer: THE JOURNEY: THE VERY BEST OF DONNA SUMMER (2003).......2006-11-19

In September of 2003, Donna Summer released her twenty-seventh album entitled, THE JOURNEY: THE VERY BEST OF DONNA SUMMER. This is, yet, another great album by the Queen of Disco, despite the fact that it is missing a few tracks here, a few tracks there. But still a great compilation.

LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY

I WILL GO WITH YOU (CON TE PARTIRO)
From the album VH1 PRESENTS DONNA SUMMER: LIVE AND MORE: ENCORE! (1999). An awesome song. I must have listened to this one at least ten times.

THAT'S THE WAY
Previously unreleased. Great.

DREAM-A-LOT'S THEME (I WILL LIVE FOR LOVE)
Previously unreleased. Great.

Even though I am asking myself, "How many 'Greatest Hits' compilations can someone have?", this compilation is still very amazing, even though the compilation is missing the following: "Spring Affair", "I Remember Yesterday", "Our Love", "Once Upon A Time", "Rumour Has It", "Sunset People", "Cold Love", "Unconditional Love" (performed by Donna Summer & Musical Youth), "There Goes My Baby", "Supernatural Love", "All Systems Go", "I Don't Want To Get Hurt", "Love's About To Change My Heart", "When Love Cries", "Friends Unknown", & "Carry On". But still a great compilation.

It's all about the power chord and the sing-along chorus. With the exception of the stark title track, Christopher Carrabba's once-prominent acoustic strumming is now in short supply. Along with Scott Schoenbeck, John Lefler, and Mike Marsh, the Dashboard Confessional mastermind cranks it all up on his fourth full-length: the guitars, vocals, drums, the works. Consequently, some listeners have been tossing around the letter "U" and the numeral "2." It's a bit of a stretch, although the album was co-produced by Daniel Lanois of Joshua Tree fame (and mixed by Nevermind's Andy Wallace). The Florida outfit also opened for the Irish superstars in support of 2003's A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar. That said, Carrabba is still the same earnest young man, just more amplified than before. Aside from "Dusk and Summer," quieter tracks include "Stolen" and the piano-driven "So Long, So Long," decorated with husky croons from Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows. But even these seem loud compared to Carrabba's stripped-down early material. It isn't a bad move, but like most stylistic shifts it's sure to send a few longtime fans packing, while making room for new ones who've never heard Dashboard Confessional before or who found the old stuff too whiny and angst-ridden. Well, there isn't much whining on Dusk and Summer--just a whole lotta (heartfelt) rockin'. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Dusk and Summer.......2007-06-17

This CD is neither great nor horrible. Some great songs such as Don't Wait, Stolen, Rooftops and Invitations, and So Long, So Long make this CD worth getting because of the expressive vocals. The best song is by far So Long, So Long, which almost makes me cry. Most of the CD is just average songs like Reason to Believe and The Secret's in the Telling. Slow Decay is easily one of the worst songs that Dashboard has ever recorded. To sum it all up, most of the CD is average, there are a few really good songs, and a few horrible ones.

5 out of 5 stars Really happy with this purchase.......2007-05-14

Sometimes you take a gamble with cd's but I was happy to find that all the songs are great.

4 out of 5 stars True Talent.......2007-04-30

This CD features 10 songs from a four-piece band. Most of the cd displays tight harmonies, passionate vocals and clever lyrics. The bass and drumbeat are steady and the guitars are used well for rhythm. There is a ballad ("So Long, So Long") that features a piano and a guest vocal appearance by the familiar voice of Adam Duritz (he of Counting Crows).

The front man and songwriter/lead vocalist Chris Carrabba is extremely talented, he hits on all cylinders on the disc, though "Slow Decay" proves he is at his best when he is writing love songs, not anti-war songs.

This is one of the best young pop bands out there.

5 out of 5 stars What was I waiting on?.......2007-04-27

I have heard of Dashboard Confessional before, just never taken enough time to listen to any of the music. Some of my friends kept telling me how good the music was but I didn't listen. Well, I heard Chris Carrabba on a radio show the other day. It was just him and his guitar, and I was moved to actually buy Dusk and Summer. Where have I been? This man can not only play and sing, but the lyrics he writes are so different, moving, reflective, intoxicating, and sad. I haven't had the chance to listen all the way through but I can tell that I will be buying more of his music. I bought it for "Stolen" but "So Long, So Long" has quickly become my favorite. It is very bittersweet, as most of his songs are.
This is a new fan that would recommend getting this. It will, at the very least, be great road music, and quite possibly make you reflect, smile, rock out, and tear up a little. Wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Good album, not their best........2007-03-23

This album is probably the most marketable and radio friendly of all of dashboard's albums. For the peripheral listener it may be the right one to get to introduce you to this band. But as a Dashboard fan of 5 or so years I truly hope they return to their original sound for their next work. Not for the listen-ability but for the show. To this day the fans react best to the songs from "Places" or "A Mark, A Mission." I recommend this album to everyone but I also recommend any and all of their other work.

Wilco's de facto frontman, Jeff Tweedy, sports a colorful past, one where he wrote paint-peelers dedicated to late Minutemen founder D. Boon as a member of the feted (and maybe fated) Uncle Tupelo and where he dolefully crooned Woody Guthrie lyrics on 1998's Mermaid Avenue. But Wilco's Summer Teeth shows hardly a tatter of Tweedy's herky-jerky postpunk intensity or the agrarian rootsiness that so often came in the past from him. Instead this layered album spreads its digits far into guitar-heavy Britpop, with full-group backing vocals carrying bouncy choruses and synths whistling over the melodies. The tunes sound like a crosshatch of orchestral plans and an execution drawing on Alex Chilton and Big Star, the Kinks, and, only distantly, Wilco's debut, A.M. "We're Just Friends" and "Via Chicago" stand as harmonized twists on ballad formulas, the latter recalling Mermaid Avenue's "California Stars" with the opening line, "I dreamed about killing you again last night / And it felt all right to me." So it's not always uplifting or cheery, but it's got dozens of surprises in a mere 15 songs. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Definitely CAN Stand It..........2007-06-21

Summerteeth marks the point where the wheels officially fell off the wagon for die-hard Uncle Tupelo & AM/Being There Wilco fans. From the opening pop-rocky "Can't Stand It" (intentionally made radio-friendly by the record label), it became clear that alt-country wasn't going to be the name of the game anymore. "She's A Jar" briefly confuses you into thinking otherwise, but "A Shot In The Arm" - possibly the best song on the record - sends the album in yet another direction with the help of a looped piano track and synth effects.

The first three tracks pretty much set the tone for the remainder of Summerteeth. The album continues swinging between up-tempo toe-tappers ("I'm Always In Love", "Nothing'severgonna...", "ELT"), borderline alt-country ("Via Chicago", "When You Wake Up...") and slow, soft tunes ("We're Just Friends", "My Darling").

Overall, I like this record because it's so ecclectic. You never get bored due to all the variety, and the hidden/bonus tracks provide a nice little surprise at the end. Not as good as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but VERY close.

3 out of 5 stars Wilco Summerteeth.......2007-05-13

Not their best album but it's pretty good. I like YHF and AGIB better. My favorite songs: Shot in the Arm, She's a Jar

5 out of 5 stars Wilco's Deceptive Masterpiece.......2007-03-29

If this album was playing at a pool party and you could only hear the melody and beat, you might think, wow, what a fluffy little pop album, sounds like the Beatles or something. HOWEVER, when you start to listen to the lyrics and examine the dark lyrical content, you realize that this album is not what it appears on the surface. The arraingments are a little more complex than you think. "I'm Always In Love" ranks with the best of Wilco's material, a song with cryptic lyrics and a real toe-tapping rythym. "I Can't Stand It" is also addictive. Overall I would say the album explores the lonliness of life on the road. I put this up there with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as Wilco's best.

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly my favorite Wilco album.......2006-07-30

Maybe it's because I live out in the country and don't listen to the radio, but I got on the Wilco boat after most folks had been around the lake a few times. There was a huge buzz surrounding Wilco after the release of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2002, but I didn't get my hands on it until much later. After I fell in love with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, I was recommended Summerteeth. While I'm on the boat now, I still consider myself a newcomer to the Wilco. I don't have all the albums yet and I haven't read the books (though I did enjoy the documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart), so this review is for all those other newcomers that I eager to find out what this Wilco band is all about.

One thing that strikes me as odd is that across the board, Wilco is classified as a country band. I'm not sure how that happened, but to all those narrow minded folks out there saying "I like all kinds of music except country," don't be like that; give it a shot. I maintain that truly great music transcends genre. The arrangements of these songs are rich with harmonicas, piano, guitar, and ambient electronic noise. The lyrics are nothing short of brilliant.

Summerteeth is not as intricate as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. That isn't a criticism, just an observation. Summerteeth is a shining example of Wilco's beautiful and humble beginnings.

Truly excellent tracks: Can't Stand It, She's A Jar, I'm Always In Love, Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again), Pieholden Suite, Via Chicago, My Darling,

Songs that will grow on you: A Shot In The Arm, How To Fight Loneliness, ELT, When You Wake Up Feeling Old, Summer Teeth

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs!!! Don't Miss Out!!.......2006-07-13

Of all Wilco Cds, this one is by far my favorite! I absolutely adore Jeff Tweedy. These songs just wouldn't be the masterpieces they are without his vocals. "Shot in the Arm" "How to Fight Lonliness" and "She's a Jar" are the outstanding songs of the disc, however all the songs are great. I just can't say enough about this cd!! I love it. If you enjoy this cd, you may also like Mermaid Avenue. While both volumes are great, I highly suggest the first.

It's a heck of a start to a career. Before he had released any material in the States, Alexi Murdoch was championed by KCRW's influential tastemaker Nic Harcourt. (Murdoch moved to LA in the late 1990s.) This led to the release of the Four Songs EP, which led to appearances in Garden State and on the The O.C.. Even arranger Van Dyke Parks (Tim Buckley, Harry Nilsson) became a fan, praising his "imaginative chords." Fortunately, Murdoch's self-produced full-length lives up to that early promise. The Nick Drake-inspired "Breathe" and "Orange Sky" are likely to be familiar to most listeners. Another standout is "Home," which shakes up his folky formula with feedback and trip-hop beats. If Time Without Consequence has a fault, it's simply that Murdoch sounds remarkably like fellow Drake devotee José González (right down to his spare finger-picking style). One singer-songwriter is from Scotland (by way of England and Greece), the other from Sweden (by way of Argentina), so it seems unlikely that either musician influenced the other. Plus, great minds do think alike. In any case, Murdoch has fashioned a satisfying debut; the true test will be to follow up with an album that reveals a more distinct personal identity. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the full album - worth the wait.......2007-07-03

Alexi Murdoch stands out amongst today's up and coming singer songwriters. With songs like Breathe, Orange Sky and A Song for You, Murdoch is setting the tone in today's folk scene. The way he melds his vocals and guitar is reminiscent of Nick Drake and some of Cat Stevens' acoustic music. But he is really his own thing. If you ever get a chance to see him live, it is well worth it - like the wait for this full length CD.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable piece of art.......2007-06-27

Alexi Murdoch has created a piece of art with this CD. The songs are slow and mellow, but they wash over you like a wave, so filled with such passion you can't help but feel the raw emotion that he sings about. All the songs are great which these days is a rarity. Definately get this cd, if you like any of his songs.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly beautiful music.......2007-06-11

I'm not at all familiar with Nick Drake so I can't attest to how much Alexi does or does not sound like him. What I can say is that I absolutely love this album. I'm not much of a music reviewer, but I know what I like. His voice is soothing and beautiful. I can't recommend this enough to anyone who likes pretty music.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully sublime.......2007-03-11

Alexi Murdoch's simple and delicate lyrics fuse with his whimsical melodies to create a warm soundscape reminiscent of Nick Drake on his Pink Moon album (minus the depression). I recommend this CD to anyone who loves music for rainy days, my favourite song on the album is the lead-off track which features beautiful subtle cello, "All of My Days" is a definite stand-out. If you like this, try out indie surfer songwriter, Todd Hannigan.

3 out of 5 stars Shameless Nick Drake ripoff, but still oddly compelling.......2007-03-05

Every musician or band is, by definition, derivative and influenced by a band or musician who came before.

The best musicians and artists are derivative and influenced by someone else, but forge a sound uniquely their own. One example is Robyn Hitchcock, who is mostly influenced by John Lennon and Syd Barrett, but has crafted his own sound that sounds like no one else. Another example is Talking Heads, who forged their sound from Roxy Music, Brian Eno, and Velvet Underground, yet, again, developed their own sound, which in turn has become tremendously influential. Ryan Adams has channeled the Grateful Dead to great effect, yet retains his own identity. Cat Power/Chan Marshall melds Sinead O'Connor with Janis Joplin, yet, again, has carved out her own sound.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, on the other hand, are just so blatantly ripping Talking Heads, that they don't really have their own identity. As such, they're interesting for a few songs, but then you want to pull out your Talking Heads CDs and hear the real thing.

In spite of the fact that just about every one of Murdoch's songs sounds like Nick Drake, he still gets your attention, and he has the ability to pull you in. He'd be a lot more interesting, though, if he threw in some other influences, or at least took Nick Drake's sound and forged his own identity. As it stands, there's probably no one else out there who does as good a Nick Drake imitation, but while imitation is the highest form of flattery, you could never put Murdoch on an opening bill with Nick Drake if he were alive today, because he just sounds too much like him.

Good for Murdoch that he's got a fanbase who don't really mind the copycat sound, and maybe some like him precisely because he sounds like Drake. I suspect many of his fans aren't familiar with Drake.

This isn't intended as a negative review. As stated above, I will listen to him play KCRW, but it makes me want to pull out my Nick Drake CDs. There will never be another Nick Drake, in spite of people like Murdoch's best efforts.

Court and Spark had earned Joni Mitchell mainstream pop acceptance, but its underlying spirit of discovery pushed her to risk new-found success with this edgier, experimental sequel released in 1975. Although the session crew is largely the same, and sleek jazz elements again abound, these songs find her introducing Burundi drums (on "The Jungle Line"), layering magisterial but forbidding vocal harmonies ("Shadows and Light"), and casting rueful shadows across the sun-dazed Southern California of the title song. Her daring promptly earned critical scorn and halted her commercial expansion, but the album's confident eclecticism and dark beauty have outlived that reception: from the safety of hindsight, Hissing was a promise to stay hungry and creatively adventurous, a promise kept then and now. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Joni at Her Best.......2007-04-19

Joni has famously quipped, supposedly to a fan attending one of her concerts who wanted her to sing one of her old songs, that "nobody ever asked Van Gogh to paint 'Starry Night' again." And maybe when she did she was thinking of the reception this album (which I see that most of the reviewers have given four or five stars to) received upon its release as the followup to "Court and Spark."

It's laughable that a work of genius like this, containing "On France They Kiss on Main Street," the title track, "Shades of Scarlett Conquering," "The Jungle Line," and the miraculous "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow" could have been branded as one of the worst albums of 1975 by "Rolling Stone"--but it was.

Now of course it's considered a masterpiece, and well it should be.

4 out of 5 stars Joni Mitchell does Luis Bunuel.......2007-03-05

What is there to make of the Joni Mitchell that emerges on The Hissing Of Summer Lawns? This Joni Mitchell seems to have no connection with the Joni Mitchell who, up through Court and Spark, released the previous year, was in her creative peak, a winning streak that spurned out one perfect album after another (what artist working today could make albums the astonishing quality of Blue, For The Roses, and Court & Spark in succession?). Mitchell, it seems, was interested in taking her music in a very very different direction - the lyrics now are not the coherent, eloquent epistles of angst and regret, they are works of beat-poet stream of consciousness (this line starts "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow": Don't interrupt the sorrow/ Darn right/ In flames our prophet witches/ Be polite/ A room full of glasses/ He says "your notches liberation doll"/ And he chains me with that serpent/ To that ethiopian wall"), and the music itself wreaks of the Steely Dan 70's. The attempt? To say something in the vein of a Luis Bunuel about the stagnating complacency of the bourgeoisie. I didn't much care for that Joni Mitchell when I started listening to the record, as many people still don't - her less-transporting verse is a meaningless ramble and truthfully, even some of the great writing is lost in its song form. A song like, for example, "Edith and The Kingpin" might read like great morality tales, but is as far from memorable as the weakest of her material, and its opener, the single "In France They Kiss on Mainstream" is energetic enough, but is dying in search of a tune. Yet something struck me after a while - that middle section of the record! "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow," "Shades of Scarlet Conquering," "The Hissing of Summer Lawns," "The Boho Dance," "Harry's House/ Centerpiece" and "Sweet Bird" work with at least a fraction of the full conceptual and lyrical fire that Mitchell intend, and, in the case of "Hissing" and "Sweet Bird" allow Mitchell to fulfill a grander ideal with songs attempting more daring commentary and soaring past their already large intentions. It's a flawed record to be certain, but what works about The Hissing Of Summer Lawns is its ambition to be a work of great concept that, even when failing, makes you admire the drive.

5 out of 5 stars Worth 20 stars alone for the songs "Hissing of Summer Lawns and Harry's House"!.......2007-02-26

I have been known to repeat those 2 songs over and over and over, better each time you hear them.. they are masterpieces of storytelling and vivid imagery. Could Joni, dear brilliant beautiful multi talented humble Joni be even greater? These songs are worth the price of the CD. And luckily there are all the other gorgeous songs too. How many superlative albums has this woman made? Is it every album!? I think nearly so. But this, this is a totally incredible mind altering experience. Put on your iPod headphones and let her lyrics and music take you places and show you things you have not ever heard or seen or at least not thought about consciously. If there was ever a complete artist, I would say Joni is the one.

4 out of 5 stars A world away.... .......2007-01-23

Joni Mitchell was coming off of the well deserved success of " Court and Spark" as she entered the studio to fashion " Hissing". Considering the extensive self exploration Mitchell had put forth in earlier work, ranging from pictoral reflection ( "Ladies of the Canyon") to inside-out musical expression ( the irrefutable classic " Blue")then back again with astute, more mature searchings on " For the Roses" and " Court", this fan thinks she earned the right to turn the conversation from "I" to "You".

However, if one really looks at the lyrics on "Hissing", it's apparent that Mitchell didn't turn the lens completely away from herself. In fact, she was examining the decadence she sometimes found herself a part of, or at least in a position to analyze by proximity.

The first track, " In France They Kiss on the Main Street", champions early rock and roll like no other; the images of 50's youth steaming in the streets is vivid. The remainder of the disc explores religious symbolism, the male/female saga ( as would be expected by this point), metaphor as a tool for illustrating stage characters ripe with an overload of "herd" culture. Contrasts between extremes provide a scathing glimpse into the undercurrents of what passes for the ideal standard.

" The Jungle Line" is a pioneer. World music before Paul Simon and the others, using primitive artist Rousseau to paint a picture of urban blight, comparing it to society excess. The title track, as well as "Harry's House/Centerpiece" take on the claptrap of the American dream, offering different results. " Hissing's" leading lady remains planted, while " Harry's" longs for freedom. Males and females are skewered equally for superficial desires and complicit provocation. Metaphor and symbolism, as stated above, require full attention to truly absorb the arc of this album. Short attention spans will lose most of its significance. As a sidebar, the CD has been criticized for lack of melody, which is nonsense. There is so much musicianship the less attentive might have trouble with the nuance.

The juxtaposition between the bland comfort mainstream society provides and the courage it takes to be true to oneself and escape its trappings makes this a philosophical entree into seventies culture. Ahead of it's time, " Hissing" is a CD that changes the formula, but aren't artists given that license?

5 out of 5 stars "THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS": JONI MITCHELL GAZES OUTWARD.......2006-12-13

Joni Mitchell's "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" was, at its release, and probably still is, avant-garde. It is the great artist's now legendary next step in her jazz submersion; and with third-world rhythms snaking through, before The Police or even Talking Heads, the folk-rock goddess proved she could still pack a punch, lyrically, whilst entertaining us with exotic musical sounds and stylings.

The album starts off with a nice rocker called "In France They Kiss On Main Street", nostalgically recalling teenage years at the birth of rock and roll in the 1950's, then jumps right into the heavy percussion of "The Jungle Line", the first glimpse we have of what this album is all about: Mitchell has turned her gaze from her usual highly personal divulgences and directed it outward towards a world of snakes in the grass. I particularly love her cover painting which perfectly encapsulates the emotions she feels about the world around her. If we take notice, there in the bottom corner of the fanfold cover artwork is a pool; and when we open the fanfold, there she is in her own space, perfectly aware of the hissing of summer lawns.

The album continues with songs that cast a scrutinizing eye on the makings of men (and women), so to speak. Edith, of "Edith And The Kingpin", is perfectly willing to sacrifice her pride and self-worth to a rather shady fellow in order to be in a shallow, but, obviously, someway-or-another compensative relationship, while the subject of "Shades Of Scarlet Conquering" proves to be a much more cold women towards everything. In the tile track, "He gave her his darkness to regret/And good reason to quit him/He gave her a room full of chippendale/That nobody sits in/Still she stays with a love of some kind/It's the lady's choice/The Hissing Of Summer Lawns".

A real highlight is "Harry's House". It's the engaging tale of a business man too busy for the family whose wife gets tired of the living even though it's oh so cushy. "A helicopter lands on the PanAm roof/Like a dragonfly on a tomb/And businessmen in button-downs/Press into conference rooms/Battalions of paper-minded males/Talking commodities and sales/While at home/Their paper wives and their paper kids/Paper their walls/To keep their gut reaction hid" she sings. The centerpiece of the song is a super-jazzy piano driven "Centerpiece", a Lambert, Hendricks and Ross song: juxtaposed with "Harry's House" as it's bridge, of sorts, is a stroke a genius.

I also really like "Sweet Bird" (a sweet condemnation of the beauty industry) and "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow", with it's broad acoustic guitar strumming over syncopated rhythms.

The album concludes with "Shadows And Light", a lofty tone-poem summarizing the whole thing.

With "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns", Joni Mitchell's musical journey proves to be an interesting, entertaining musical adventure for the listener.
