The Paris News
From the rustic folk style introduction of the title track to the progressive country and western tunes, White's rich baritone voice caresses a listener's ear.

This album definately puts the Country back into Country. Every song you find yourself singing with either a smile on your face or a tear in your eye. It brings back the roots of Country music and tells a story that all listeners can relate to.

Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film of Annie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her, Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight in Let Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
One of the best ever!.......2007-04-24
Do I mean the best album or the best singer? You are correct if you said both! I saw Kristin Chenoweth on a PBS show "Broadway's Best at the Pops," (though it was not the first time I had heard her) and decided to check out the offerings here. This is a collection of the kind of music and performances I love. She has a great range, a precise pitch, and a great style that is at the same time true to the music and to herself. In an era when singers try to outdo each other re-interpreting the composer's original work, not usually with great success, she is a blessing!
Kristen Chenowith.......2007-02-26
I bought this CD for the Girl in 14G. Yes, it's that good...
Has its moments.......2007-02-19
After watching Candide endlessly and going to see Ms. Chenoweth in The Apple Tree, I was hungry for something more portable to listen to. At times this fits the bill, but what surprised me the most is how thin her voice comes across on this recording. Perhaps it was the joy of seeing her live that has ruined this listener; perhaps I need to upgrade my aging music system. Then again, maybe the recording is just not as good as Ms. C singing Bernstein or as good as staring at Ms. C command a Broadway stage.
Great CD!.......2007-01-19
I truly enjoy listening to this CD. Kristin Chenoweth's vocal style and abilities are very well-matched to the songs selected for this album. If you enjoy classic, older-style Broadway/popular tunes, I would highly recommend this CD. Ms. Chenoweth has a bright, expressive voice and does a fantastic job with this material.
As with any full-length CD, there are a couple of songs I am not as crazy about, but that has to do with the songs themselves, not Ms. Chenoweth's vocal performance. Overall, I love this album and have listened to it several times now, since receiving it as a Christmas gift last month.
This woman has what it takes, and then some..........2007-01-12
Kristin Chenoweth brings new life to some timeless Broadways tunes while introducing a few wonderful new ones. This high pitched vocal goddess effortlessly provides for a nearly flawless and easy listening experience. I definitly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys jazz vocals, showtunes, or just a new spin on some old classics.

vintage Hugh Martin score a complete delight.......2004-12-23
LOVE FROM JUDY, based on Jean Webster's novel 'Daddy Long Legs', is pure vintage Hugh Martin. The show never made it to Broadway, instead enjoying a sold-out London season and an extensive provincial tour.
Jean Carson played Jerusha Abbott, an orphan at the John Grier Home who is mysteriously supported by a never-named benefactor. June Whitfield, Johnny Brandon, Adelaide Hall and Bill O'Connor round out the strong leading cast. Barbara Windsor played one of the orphans (for some interesting backstage reminisces about LOVE FROM JUDY check out Barbara Windsor's autobiography 'All of Me').
The Hugh Martin-Jack Gray score is quite lovely from what is featured on this disc (the recordings were originally designed to fit 4 sides of a set of 78's). LOVE FROM JUDY runs a scant 20 minutes, so the disc has been filled out with extensive bonus material.
We get Jean Carson singing "A Kiss to Build a Dream On", "Hug Me a Hug" and "Barrels and Barrels of Roses" (on the 2 former tracks she's joined by her then-husband Bill Lowe); Johnny Brandon singing 5 numbers including his mega-hit "Glow Worm"; and Adelaide Hall singing 2 great numbers. June Whitfield sings 5 numbers including two songs from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES!
There are also selections from the Frank Loesser score of HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN; and a full-cast presentation of numbers from Disney's PETER PAN (both feature Jean Carson and Johnny Brandon).

Customer Reviews:
Pretty damn good.......2004-06-22
Crows have always been one of my favorite bands, and though I often don't buy singles, I decided to make an exception to hear Mercury (a track I previously was fairly ambivolant over) live, as well as one of my favorite Crows' songs, Goodnight Elizabeth.
It didn't disappoint.
Crows have always been referred to as a live band, and this is an excellent example. The two live tracks are spectacular, not to mention the classy (and cathy!) Hangin' Around (track one of 'This Desert Life')
Well worth a buy; even for those cynics who never buy singles!
Awesome!.......2001-07-26
For a start hangin'around is a great track from the This Desert Life album. But Counting Crows - known for their excellent live performances include to live B-Side tracks, Mercury - "This is not a song about love, this is a song about addiction" as Adam stresses! And Goodnight Elisabeth with some wonderful guitar and piano intro's. Definetly worth getting!
Buying a Pig in a Poke ?.......1999-12-01
Long ago, the expression "buying a pig in a poke" was applied to those who paid for something essentially sight unseen, on promise or the word of another. In many ways, the same could be said about this CD because Amazon doesn't tell you how many songs/tracks it contains, or even what their titles are.
So, to let the pig out, lemme tell you that for your money you will get a grand total of three songs: the title track (also from the full album "This Desert Life"); Mercury (from "Recovering the Satellites"); and Goodnight Elizabeth (ditto). Also no lyric sheet.
That's one new song outta three (assuming you haven't paid another $2 to get the complete Hanging Around CD), tiny, tiny print, and recordings that probably wouldn't have made it onto the first album. They're coasting and living on their reputation.
And Geffen is asking you to buy this pig (and Hanging Around #2) on faith and hope. Now you know what's inside the jewel case and on the CD. If these three songs make your got to have list-- part with your money.
GREAT BUY!.......1999-11-24
This CD was one of their best. If you don't really want to buy their whole album, i see your point of view. This song is a great song, and their single makes it so you don't have to buy the whole CD. GO COUNTING CROWS!
Funkadelic.......1999-11-08
This song is SO groovy! I just love playing this on the car stereo. These guys are so cool. Them and 98 Degrees, I cant decide whose better. I hope there album comes out soon.

Customer Reviews:
Vintage Hiatt.......2005-09-27
John Hiatt was already an accomplished song writer on this, his first recording. His sharp wit and irony are apparent on the title track, and his keen melodic sense permeates the songs. The clever photo collage on the cover caught my attention in a record store back in 1974, and it's still one of my favorite album covers. But what pushed me to buying the album was seeing Milwaukee's virtuoso guitarist Doug Yankus listed as a member of the Hot Babies Band, which provides stellar backup throughout. I was raised in Milwaukee and was a big fan of Soup, the popular local power trio Doug fronted. Doug also appears on Hiatt's "Slug Line" album, and his brilliant contributions on these two Hiatt albums cement Doug Yankus' legacy as one of the great unsung 60's guitarists. I'm glad I took a chance on this album by someone I'd never heard of- I've been a Jon Hiatt fan ever since. This is one of my co-favorite Haitt albums, along with "Slow Turning" and "Bring the Family". Alas, "Hangin' Around the Observatory" has been out of print for years, and my patience wore out awaiting a reissue- so I got a mint used copy from Reggie's. Hopefully someday we'll have a remastered version, ideally with some previously unheard Doug Yankus performances.
Early Hiatt.......2004-01-06
This earliest of Hiatt's album shows the different aspects of his talent that makes him a such a great unique singer-songwriter.This is a roots rock record with acoustic and electric guitar, organ, piano, etc. Many aspects of Hiatt's songwriting are covered- all out rockers like Full Moon, love ballad like Little Blue Song For You, jaunty-life lesson song Sure As I'm Sittin' Here, country song Whistle In My Ears .This is clearly Hiatt showing at a young age how far his talent reached. His singing on this album shows how his soulful voice was always there--if anything his singing has got clearer through the years and range better. However, at such a young age no singer comes to mind that was ever as soulful as this guy.You believe his stories!
Intriguing first album.......1999-06-16
Fans of Hiatt's later work may find this one a bit of an oddity. There's a curious mixture of folk, rock and country here, not very well produced, that doesn't quite gel. The title track is probably the best - suitably weird lyrics and music, and John sounds so young! So, it's a weird album from a young guy. Worst thing about it is the dull sound quality.

The Pioneer Of Rock Still A True Master Of His Art.......2007-05-30
Around his 15th birthday, in may or june 1951, Charlie cut his own "Boogie-Woogie Blues" a song which combined his rhythm-and-blues and country influences long before Presley, Vincent or Holly ever been inside a recording studio. He has survived them all! He made it into the bigtime in 1957 selling millions of records. Now, 50 years later, he still delivers -on stage and on records- his dynamic singing and guitar-playing (which has been described by Beatle George Harrsison as brilliant). Buy it, you won't regret it.
It's fabulous!.......2007-02-09
I recently discovered Just Hangin'Around on Amazon. I expected it to be pretty good since it was by Charlie Gracie. I ordered it, recieved it, and loved it! I've been listening this CD for weeks now. It's rockin', charming, and just plain fun! You can't go wrong with Charlie Gracie. He's fabulous!
