Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

4 out of 5 stars For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

    I'm sorry the reviewer below felt it necessary to concentrate on the programme notes of this recording rather than the recording. Leaving aside any question of how or what caused the miserable end of Gurney's life, it is an inestimable pleasure to know that he left to the world a quanitity of songs which are gem-like in their miniature of human emotion, memory and almost calm imagery. They are indeed very English songs, but English artsong has nothing of which to be ashamed.

    The songs on this album include the perfect "Sleep" as well as many other, more unfamiliar, Gurney songs. Listening to the very, very beautiful tenor voice of Paul Agnew sing these songs with delicacy and sincerity is a wonder. (I cannot fathom why the reviewer below found anything at which to cavil in the superb singing of these songs!) Agnew's voice is somewhat difficult to describe - it is of a pure sweetness that is yet very masculine, like the smooth trunk of a birch. It has an almost woody quality to it, that nearly reed-like purity of an oboe, perhaps, yet with the sonorousness of a cello in its upper register. It is an instantly recognisable timbre, a haut-contre voice that is not only immensely attractive but controlled in such a masterful and intelligent way.

    Paul Agnew's approach to these songs is well-nigh perfect. I have played this particular CD several times, sighing with pleasure each time at the tone, the feeling and the beautiful phrasing.

    Recommended without hesitation.

    Unfortunately Severn Meadows ý Songs by Ivor Gurney is a disappointing recording, particularly since it is the first CD devoted entirely to Gurney's music. Gurney was a master of the song setting but this release does not do his splendid contributions to song literature justice. It is too similar in tone throughout and lacks the sparkle, color and intensity that other interpreters draw from Gurney's music. More disappointing and disturbing than the recording, however, are Michael Hurd's program notes in which he feels it necessary to repeat the irresponsible suggestion the Gurney suffered from syphilis. This information was presented to the public in 2000 without being carefully researched or documented and has, unfortunately, found its way into print too often as an explanation of Gurney's mental illness. Gurney did not suffer from syphilis or shell shock or paranoid schizophrenia. He suffered, as did Robert Schumann, from severe untreated manic-depressive illness. ...

          Remember singer-songwriters, acoustic guitars, gentle harmonies, and wistful lyrics about love and longing? If the mere mention of James Taylor, Neil Young, and Kenny Rankin makes you break out in a goofy grin, Full Moon Bay may be just the band you've been waiting for. On the band's debut CD, Robert Hauver sings his sweet songs of love lost and found accompanied by his own fingerpicked guitar, Patti DeMar Hauver's backing vocals, Rick Ecker's bass, Paul Gaschke's percussion, and assorted guest horn and keyboard players, with proto-hippie John Sebastian adding his soulful harmonica on the first track. This collection of radio-friendly tunes radiates good vibes from beginning to end. If peace and love are concepts that still mean something to you, you'll probably want to check out Full Moon Bay. There's sure to be at least a song or two on this album that you'll want to play for someone you love.
