Down in the root cellar with the blues.......2004-05-11
Ferguson finds his own mysterious muse in the sounds of New Orleans. NRBQ's original guitarist is part musical archivist, part myth-maker; the accompanying story of Mama-U-Seapa in the liner notes is a saga of music, murder and "easy virtue." The music, with the help of the Midwest Creole Ensemble, is a house-rent party: there's Piano Red's "Coo-Cha" and "Right String Baby," a cover of the Time's "Jungle Love," and a batch of Ferguson originals with titles like "Pig Latin Love Song" dressed up with a horn section. Most of NRBQ make guest appearances, and Chuck Berry's piano player Johnnie Johnson is along for the ride, too. Play this one loud, and just make sure you invite the neighbors!
THE MAN!!.......1999-04-04
steve ferguson is WELL known in the music world but not known to most of the public. he is the GREATEST guitarist that has ever played. period! jimi hendrix used to watch this man play in NYC. he has played with clapton, the headhunters etc... los lobos watched in awe as he opened a show for them in detroit. the original guitarist for NRBQ is solo now and making the best music of his career. if your ever able to see him live it will be the best experience of your life! buy the album and share it with all your friends and you will be a loyal fan like all those who listen to him before you. ferguson is THE MAN!!!

A White Soul Brother.......2000-06-25
Jody Davidson's Creole Mama CD is a lyrical gem. The title piece, for example, expresses the love and acceptance a young man feels toward the Black woman who helped to care for him. This song transcends the boundaries of time and race and moves us to appreciate the matters of the soul. Plymouth Valiant is a spirited, playful piece about that first automobile we all can relate to which got us to where we wanted to go, sometimes, but more importantly, marked a moment in time, we will never forget. Peace and Stillness creates a wonderfully serene mood which is spiritually transforming. By contrast Vietnam is a sobering portrayal of the consequences of war. As an artist Jody's style and substance reminds me of a younger James Taylor and a contemporary Sarah McGlachlan, a cross-fertilization of folk-rock, blue grass and country- " honest, earthy, mystical, finally very fulfilling- the stuff of the human spirit." Porter Shreve, Houston, Texas, June 26, 2000
Storytelling from the heart.......2000-06-21
While attending school in Houston several years ago, I caught this artist performing a set at an "open mic" in an intimate, inner-city venue. "Creole Mama" released in 1998, is characteristic of that earlier work...soul-inspired, poetic vocals accompanied only by a cherished Martin guitar. Jody Davidson epitomizes just about everything good about traditional folk music. His lyrics are clearly based upon past experiences which appear to have enriched his life, his gentle spirit, and his compassion for others, as well as for nature. The title track "Creole Mama" is a blusey tribute to a loving caregiver of long ago, and an intense longing for her is expressed in melancholic lyrics. The more upbeat "Don't Hold Back" is a disk favorite. This simple ballad not only showcases Jody's almost angelic voice and superior guitar talent, it also emphasizes the importance of living life to the fullest. Jody Davidson's debut disk wraps up with "Peace Is All I Want" in which he reveals his soul's longing: "There's a spark on the ocean/ A shimmering light in my eyes, melting away all my sorrow/ Peace is all I want/ ... The love of God in our hearts/ I believe." Don't we all long for peace in our lives?
The Spirit of Love in Folk Music.......2000-06-20
There are songs on this album that touch the spirit and remind us of our connection with each other. Creole Mama is a song of love for Davidson's family housekeeper while he was growing up in Louisiana. "Peace & Stillness" and "Peace Is All I Want" are beautiful songs about connecting with the spirit within. Without sounding preachy, Davidson writes songs that reminds us of our universal spirituality with songs like "Spirit Man" and "Post Card". Creole Mama is Davidson's first recording and is a simplistic album that touches the heart.
