2 out of 5 stars CLASSIC PLASTIC.......2005-07-21

Gershwin CD is strangely lacking in atmosphere and reference, with over an hour of Gershwin's more classical side, including Michael Tilson Thomas conducting The Columbia Jazz Band's "Rhapsody in Blue", featuring Gershwin's original 1925 piano roll, Leonard Bernstein conducting The New York Philharmonic's "An American in Paris", and composer John Williams on guitar in "A Foggy Day". With song titles like, "Medly From The Woody Allen Film 'Manhatten", at just over three minutes, and "Medly From 'Porgy and Bess'", the CD is a classy cash cow thrown together by CBS Records. Tilson Thomas' "Three Preludes for Piano", stops and takes a dramatic musical breath in the context of these slam-bang offerings. Truly bland CD liner notes by Bobby Finn and Kay Swift, whoever they may be.

5 out of 5 stars Musical pleasure.......2001-07-16

I have always loved the Gershwin music. It seems to Americana. When I first heard the recordings of the music from the piano rolls, I was fascinated. When I then heard this album with the jazz sound and the symphony sound combined with the pure sounds from the piano rolls, I was captured by the sound. The mighty ending of The Rhapsody in Blue is as powerful as this music can be. Add songs like Summertime and the Porgy N' Bess favorites and I find that this album is just the right combination of composer, performer and directors. Michael Tilson Thomas pulls forth from the group he is directing, a crisp and powerful sound. Bernstein needs no critique. If you are a lover of Gershwin and piano music, you can't miss with this.

5 out of 5 stars Brenda in romantic mood.......2005-09-08

Brenda Lee is best remembered these days for her Christmas classic (Rocking around the Christmas tree) but she had a long string of hits in the early sixties around the world. British buyers generally preferred her up-tempo rocking songs while American buyers generally preferred her love songs. This particular compilation of love songs avoids all the big hits (although a few minor hits are here) so makes an ideal companion to a collection of hits.

While Brenda's own hits are generally missing, many of the songs will be familiar as they are covers of other people's hits. One song that may appear to be a cover (Always on my mind) is actually a Brenda Lee original. Although written for Elvis Presley, Brenda recorded the song about six months before Elvis and had a minor country hit with it.

Elsewhere, Brenda does great covers of Georgia on my mind, Crying game, Teach me tonight, Always something there to remind me, End of the world, Softly as I leave you, You always hurt the one you love, You don't have to say you love me, Crying time, Sweet memories and many other classics, all of which Brenda sings in her own distinctive style.

If you already have a collection of Brenda's hits and you enjoy the love songs, you'll love this collection too.

5 out of 5 stars Splendor, glamour, beauty, versatility, and velvet voice!.......2005-03-21

What else may you request of a singer? She was the sum of these adjectives and even more, according to trustworthy testimonies of people much older than me who had the honor to appreciate her craft in live performances.

Few singers have the requested versatility and the necessary voice to get that so well know pieces of the repertoire sound so fresh and rich.

Brenda Lee is a singer which offers us every sound as we had not ever listened never before, being that hard to find quality the basis of his applauded popularity.

It has been said about her, she was a very dedicated artist in every detail; yes indeed. she and Connie Francis incarnated the essential profile of the beloved sixties girl. One of my loves of youth and remind this comment of Jimmy Mc Hugh composer of Don't blame that "she was in those ages the number one singer in the world" .

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent collection.......2003-12-27

of Ms Brenda Lee's beautiful ballads, with an exemplary good taste for the choice of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Every track is great.......2003-04-24

The best of Brenda Lee in a romantic mood. What more can I say?

5 out of 5 stars YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS THING.......2002-08-17

What a great voice she has! Sweet, broken, loud, soft, loud... every thing to make a ballad sound magnificently.
Only a native from Georgia (as Brenda) can sing Georgia On My Mind with that sincere emotion, I know the original and several versions of Funny How Time Slips Away, Brenda's rendition is absolutely the best of all, listen to Sweet Memories, Crying Game, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, just to mention a few of this excellent compilation.
I listen to this CD over and over and never get tired, each time it is a pleasure.
I have the CD that Brenda recorded in 1991; I wait for another CD of new recordings. Hey producers: don't miss the opportunity, you find a voice like hers only once in a lifetime.
I also wait for another compilation like this one, without the current hits of Brenda that, of course, I already have too.

4 out of 5 stars Voices from a pastoral past.......2001-08-28

While you can certainly buy music with better production (these songs were produced "on the spot" in sometimes less than ideal conditions),better musicianship and more competent vocals, you would be hard pressed to find a contemporary collection that is more heartfelt and stirring as the one offered here. This music embodies our past ~ the roots from which grew blues and bluegrass. The "artists" represented on this CD are just plain folks that learned their instruments and songs from family and friends, passed down from the preceding generations. When taken within the context of the collection each selection is a gem on its own. Among these gems, many have a rare and haunting beauty. You should buy this CD if you have even a passing interest in American roots music

4 out of 5 stars Southern Journey, Vol. 5: Bad Man Ballads.......1999-12-19

Alan Lomax recorded these folk songs during the late 1950's in people's houses and in prisons. Incredible to have recordings of prisoners singing to the beat of their axe strokes as they work. Housework seems less mundane when doing it with this music on. Wide range of music represented here, but many of the songs in this volume are concerned with crime, especially murder, and prison life. Two (actually three) great versions of Po' Lazarus, and an interesting John Henry. I would have given it 5 stars except there's 1 track I hate and two others I don't care for. That leaves 14 great tracks.

"Sweet Country Ballads" is part of the Time Life Classic Country series. This cd is one of my favorites. Some of the music in this series is an acquired taste: really old and twangy. But this cd is all beautiful music and very easy to listen to and sing along with. It is definitely one of my favorites in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Tries to do too much, but succeeds in doing a lot.......2004-12-30

Putting the musical contributions of African-Americans into perspective is a daunting task, but at the close of the century, a group of execs at Universal decided they should do it. Fortunately they chose to take ten full CDs and a long essay, complete with photos and historical context, to tell the story, creating in the process a sort of 20th-century time capsule.

The collection focuses on popular vocal music, so jazz is largely ignored (though at least they didn't leave out Miles Davis or John Coltrane), and it condenses the first half of the century (1900 - 1945) into a single disc. But their choices for that disc are impeccable: Scott Joplin, Louis Armstong, Paul Robeson, Bessie Smith, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Robert Johnson, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Nat "King" Cole, and more than a dozen other giants give props to a representative slice of Black artists.

None of the nine remaining CDs covers more than 8 years. But what years they were! The choices on these discs are generally as judicious as on the first disc, though with the greater space, a bit of dross slips in, particulary in CD 7 (Disco Inferno) and the last few discs, where a lack of time and perspective make it difficult to judge what really is of lasting value. But the first six are to die for, especially the soul sides (CDs 4 - 6). Almost without exception, the songs included are ones the performers are most famous for (and justly so).

Since there are 220 sides in all, however, there are dozens of performers and performances that you may have forgotten or never heard, and they flow together well. And the box is a great conversation-starter; what recordings would you have included or left out?

Only ten singers rate more than one cut: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, James Brown, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Marvin Gaye. A sprinkling of blues artists (among them B.B. King), rock (Jimi Hendrix), reggae (Bob Marley), pop (Michael Jackson), and rap (Public Enemy) round out the collection. Recent hits by the major stars of hip-hop and rap are well-covered.
