New Classic.......2007-06-16

I just discovered this band through browsing online and decided to take a chance on it , well... was i lucky .
Its absolutely superb from start to finish and i can't stop listening to it , it just gets better and better every time. Now i hear that its getting released over here by Proper ( a fine label , i love Nick Lowes latest stuff) so im even happier cos they may tour . If so , please come to Scotland guys you'll get a warm welcome. Get known quickly by getting the record to Allan Jones at UNCUT , he'll love it ! It done wonders for Richmond Fontaine !
Anyway , great album , a new Americana classic if im not mistaken , and i rarely am . Lovely.

Bottlerockets reborn.......2006-10-10

This album very much captured the feeling of The Bottlerockets in their early years. Each singer/songwriter has their own style, ranging from melancholy to lighthearted to rockin. If you're a fan of Son Volt, Bottlerockets, and early Wilco, you'll looooooove this album.

up to vol.5 of harlequins series of edmundos classic 1940-1950 recordings.sound quality is good as can be expected unless decca ever decide to release this stuff , remastered from original master tapes, if they still exist.their are several latin styles edmundo tackles here, including 3 or 4 caylpsos. ros had a very effective voice for this type of story tellers song, his warm tone giving the song a friendly feel. also included are :the wedding samba: his biggest hit (3 million copies sold), copacabana one of his most popular sambas, cuanto le gusto (from the carmen miranda film :a date with judy: i believe)and the maharajah of megador agreat novelty number. listening to this c.d evokes a feeling for a bygone time when people relied on artists like edmundo ros and xavier cugat to bring a little latin romance into their living rooms,longhaul jetplanes didn,t exist yet.the muscianship is as always with ros excellant. if you like 1940;s style latin dancebands it dont get much better.

I remain both shocked and saddened by the recent passing of Stan Jarmiolowski. He is mourned by many, and the untimely, tragic loss of this individual - as a friend, gifted musician, talented songwriter, great performer, and warm, wonderful human being - will be so deeply felt among all who knew him. He will be remembered fondly, and forever remain in the hearts of everyone he touched, befriended, and influenced over the years.

In terms of recollection concerning my personal relationship with the man, I consider it both a distinct honor and a special privilege to have been able to share the stage with Stan upon numerous occasions during my tenures with "Tabernash" and "Big Whiskey" in the Great Pacific Northwest! May God bless him, and may he rest-in-peace!!!

Stan Jarmiolowski passed away wednesday, 43 years old, I've known the man since we were 4 years old. He was one of my best friends and he will always be in my heart. This CD is his legacy, listen..........

refreshing change of pace in country music!.......2001-10-01

one of the few country oriented CD's i regularly listen to. big whiskey has got more happening on this one CD than most popular country "artists" have in five of theirs. heartfelt songs and vocals, great sound, and fantastic guitar work all around!

FRESH NEW COUNTRY.......2001-04-22

There is so much variety on this cd. Every tune is captivating, from foot stompin to emotional blues the entire cd spans the complete country spectrum. If you haven't paid much attention to country music this would be the best place to start. Jarmiolowski has done an incredable job demonstrating not only that he has the ability to write and play all the country styles but to orchestrate them on one single cd. Recording quality is superb. Musicianship top notch. Content, content, content. This cd has it.

Sam Jones' "My Front Porches" is a masterwork that truly defies comparison, but critics worldwide have compared this record to Bob Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde," the Beatles "White Album," The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds," the Clash's "London Calling," and Nick Drake's "Pink Moon."

The record was made in Jones' "Big Orange Studios" over the last two years, with Jones playing many of the instruments, and bringing in his friends to flesh out some of the tracks, ala "The Basement Tapes." Included on this record are drummer Dan McCarroll, who has played with Aimee Mann, Sheryl Crow, and the Grays, Davey Farrager, who is now in Elvis Costello's band, and Val McCallum, who's latest project is playing guitar for the Wallflowers.

The songwriting is the thread that holds this incredible American patchwork of song styles together, with Jones' distinctive voice telling tall tales of truth over swirling melodies, mysterious soundscapes, and honest playing. The record ranges from the punk-rock snarl of "Astronauts in Motion," a song that is so very biting in its demystification of heroes, but at the same time aware of the pyschological undercurrents that drive people's dementia: "we are astronauts in motion/divorcing our wives and leaving our children/nothing on earth can ever compare/with the feeling of just floating in the air," to the lush pop sensibilities of "Suit of Lights. This song is a brilliant telling of a love lost not through carelessness, but through self-destruction. The lyrics evoke comparisons to Elvis Costello, while the music would make Brian Wilson smile.

"My Front Porches" is a record that grows and grows on a listener. Sam Jones has created a piece of music that will last long after his own death.

i fell in love with 'front porches' the first time i played it and have purchased it for several friends (who have all loved it, too)! i got to mr. jones' music from the wilcofim links page and am now a bigger fan of sam jones the musician vs. sam jons the filmaker and/or photographer. a good album has to connect and carry your soul. the vulnerabilty he reveals in his vocals and lyrics ('suit of lights', 'hard to love', 'nervous system') do that as do the varying melodies from 'smile when you frown' to 'astronauts in motion'. it's a keeper!

A unique and distinctive voice.......2002-05-04

I really liked this cd. Sam has a unique and distinctive voice, and he doesn't sound like anyone else I can think of. I compare this album to other "personal" records that are hard to market, but that stick with you for a long time. I am reminded of artists like Joe Henry, the Flaming Lips, and Damon Gough. Artists that are hard to categorize, but that are willing to put themselves out there in an honest way.

I'm giving this 4 stars because I want to give Mr. Jones someplace to aspire to for his next album. And I hope there will be a second offering from this talented musician. The tunes are at turns romantic & hard driving, which makes this an album that takes some listening & growth time- which are always my favorite kind. Mr. Jones' voice is full of personality & emotion: a rare & lush treat. A new & unique musical voice in every way. I'm addicted. If you're a fan of Dylan, Wilco, Jon Brion, etc.... this is a must hear.

This late-'70s German recording by one of the blues' finest musicians is being released in the U.S. by Evidence music, marking the first time that No More Whiskey has been available in the United States. Recorded only a few years before Williams's death, in 1982, this CD is an excellent example of his later work and, in fact, of his music overall. It's all here--Williams's rich, expressive singing; his heavily rhythmic guitar work; and several classic songs, the standout of which is "Lonesome Train Blues."
