Customer Reviews:
a terrific songsmith.......2006-06-20
Unless one's name was Dylan, Baez, Guthrie, or Collins, folk artists in the 1960's had a rough time of it in the USA. There were a group of folkies ( David Ackles, Tim Rose, Tim Hardin, and Fred Neil among them ) whose songs were mined for hits with great success by Rock performers--and who still never became famous.
I knew of Tim Hardin on the strength of "Hang on to A Dream", which the Nice made into a big production, and was probably the most beautiful piece that Keith Emerson ever played. Rod Stewart did a fabulous version of "Reason to Believe".
As good as those two songs are in their original versions, every other song on this collection is just as stellar. After hearing just a couple of these tunes, you will realize that Tim Hardin was a huge influence on Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, and especially Stephen Stills.
Tim Hardin did not have the greatest voice in the world, but he knew how to write great, unpretentious songs. There are few frills here--reportedly, Hardin was unhappy with what did get overdubbed, and would have preferred no string arrangements at all.
Listening to this album, I still find myself marveling, wondering how Hardin came up with songs that are so simple yet so profound. These are some of the best songs ever written in the 20th Century. They will endure forever.
Mede me feel good.......2005-03-25
I saw Tim Hardin sing and he was as good in person as he is on this album. The songs are not only believable but every
song is sung so wonderfully you might miss how gut wrenching the story is. Tim was way ahead of his times. What a loss when
he died. He had so much talent and not many people even know
about him today. Rod Stewart cut Reason to Believe as his A side
instead of Maggie May in 1973. This Cd is special. Do no miss out.
great until drugs and the 1960s did him in.......2004-09-16
i hate it when people romanticize the 1960s drug culture. they must not have seen the wrecked lives i saw. the 1960s and drug use were an unmitigated disaster for working class young people. tim hardin coulda been great. he shoulda been great. unfortunately he was a junkie. he never lived up to his potenial. live at town hall ("tim hardin live in concert") was his best album. there is only one song from that album on this cd. its a shame. almost 40 years later i can still remember his heartbreaking song "lenny's tune" (from that album) for his friend and fellow junkie lenny bruce. that song and others should be on this cd. along with bob dylan and joni mitchell, tim hardin was one of the very best 1960s singer songwriters. drug use and the 1960s did him in. these few great songs are all we have left.
Great Album And A Great Talent.......2003-12-07
Tim Hardin was a great American singer and songwriter.
Lucky enough to see him live at the Speakeasy, London 30 years ago.
Sorry he died too young. Rod Stewart, the Nice and Bobby Darin sing his songs "Reason To Believe" and "If I were a Carpenter"

This is the Tim Hardin compilation to get........2007-04-17
I first came across this CD at my local library and had remembered reading that Tim was one of the greatest singer-songwriters that most people have never heard, so I took the disc home. I was blown away from moment I first heard his voice. I have a massive musical library, but I can say without reservation that Tim's my favorite singer. The man had the gift of pure expression and he truly channels both the beauty and tragedy of life every time you listen to his work.
I have a collection of his CD's now, but this is still the best compilation and the one I usually reach for. I can't imagine anyone listening to this CD and not being moved and I definitely recommend it.
Hardin At The Top Of His Game.......2002-02-09
Tim Hardin was a gifted song craftsman who led a troubled life offstage. The purity of his voice and his unique ability to convey emotion in his singing, make Hardin one of the wonders of popular music in the 1960s. His first two albums are the crown jewels of his recorded legacy. The understated arrangements of the first two albums make him the progenitor of what we now call chamber pop. If you don't beleive that listen to the arrangements and vocals of Stuart Staples of Tindersticks.
This Polydor collection of Tim Hardin trumps any of the more expensive anthologies, simply because it contains material only from Tim Hardin 1 and Tim Hardin 2. You don't have to pay big bucks to get a bunch of songs from his later works, many of which are overproduced and wallow in pathos. If you like Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake or Tindersticks, give this album a listen. His nakedly emotional vocals, his tender song writting and the shimmering production values will seduce you.
Reason To Believe (The Best of).......2001-08-05
As the previous reviewer stated, this album is awesome. However, the rendition of Reason To Believe was best done by The Youngbloods in the late 60's.
I find myself pulling this CD out often. The tunes are short, simple, melodic and to the point.
tim hardin, reason to believe (the best of).......2001-03-08
i ordered this cd just to hear the man who wote reason to beleive. (for rod stuart) holly cow! where has this guy been all my life?this is a major artist in every sense of the word. his haunting voice and sparce arrangments really let him tell his stories, mechancoly as they may be. if i were a carpenter brings tears to my eye no matter how many times i play it. every song on this collection is a true gem. i highly recomend it, as i can't live without it. shakey jake key west fl.
Hauntingly Beautiful!.......2001-01-29
Back in 1967, with my heart freshly tromped by my first love, I spent months alone, caressing my guitar, and absorbing the healing tenderness of Tim Hardin's beautifully intimate songs. Sharing deeply, his painful disillusionments with love---his sense of loss and injustice---I licked my wounds, gradually got back on my feet, and moved on to love again, living to this ripe old age. Tim didn't make it. How many of us leaned on Tim's songs for support & understanding back in those days before there was a family counseling center on every block? They're all here, 'Reason To Believe', 'How Can We Hang On To A Dream?', 'It'll Never Happen Again', 'Misty Roses', Don't Make Promises', 'If I were A Carpenter', 'Black Sheep Boy', 'Green Rocky Road*', 'How Long*?', 'Lady Came From Baltimore' and more... (*sweet harmonica by John Sebastian on these two) Tim's soothing music, haunting voice, and lovely words give us hope that even the black sheep among us might smell the misty roses, and find reason to believe we can hang on to our dreams. Words of wisdom for survival, held up by a drowning man, generous loving words of eternal strength. Thanks Tim...
