Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Uncle Petrus is a solo artist who composed and multi-track recorded the bulk of the material on this album, with remaining contributions by family, friends, and studio artists as outlined on the liner. He resides in Austin, Texas.
Product Description
An eclectic mixture of diverse musical styles, with each song unlike any other on the album. Although the first track is a soft instrumental with flute and piano, it soon kicks up with a variety of lively compositions. It features 8 original works written, recorded, and produced by the artist, who devoted several years to the project, including three mastering sessions. No piece was considered finished until it was approved by the artist. The tongue-in-cheek humor of the lyrics never fails to produce a smile for listeners.

Customer Reviews:
Nanna /Christmas.......2007-01-10
I have always enjoyed the voice of Nanna Mouskouri for many years. She has a voice of a nightingale. This cd is full of beautiful international Christmas music. If you enjoy music in multi languages then you totally agree with my rating of this cd...
A Christmas Trip Around The World.......2004-12-01
When it comes to singing in many languages, Nana Mouskouri is among the best. This album covers beautiful carols in French, English, Greek, German, Italian, and Latin. Her clear voice and perfect diction give a wonderful glimpse into the traditional Christmas songs of many lands. I especially enjoyed hearing "Kalin Iméran" - it's not easy to find Greek carols and this one is excellent.
A truly international album from a classy singer.......2003-11-16
Nana is a huge star in mainland Europe with a string of hit singles in several countries. She only had one big hit in Britain but her albums have always enjoyed healthy UK sales. I don't know the extent of her following in America but this Christmas album was finally given an American release in 2003 to coincide with a tour. Nana sings in several different languages and you can hear some of them on this collection, including English, French, German and Greek.
The only songs here that Nana sings in English are Deck the halls, O come all ye faithful, Hark the herald angels sing, White Christmas, God rest ye merry gentlemen, All through the night and Lullaby.
Five songs are taken from an album of German Christmas songs, including Stille nacht heilage nacht (Silent night), and O tannenbaum (O Christmas tree).
Nana sings Minuet Chretien (O holy night) and L'enfant au tambour (Little drummer boy) both in French. Ave Maria is here as well but I haven't worked out in which language. I recognize some other songs here from the tune, but there are plenty of high quality songs that I don't recognize at all (or only recognize from other foreign language recordings).
I have the French edition of this album, which has the title Les plus beaux Noels du monde, but the track listing and front cover artwork is the same as the American edition.
Frankly, it doesn't matter what language Nana sings in - if you enjoy any of her music, you'll love this album.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24
Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.
This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.
Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.
My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Customer Reviews:
Visions Need Some Glasses.......2006-06-01
I must admit that I enjoyed this sampler CD introduction to the musical world of Alan Hovhaness more than the other reviewer. These are peaceful and lovely recordings and renditions of these works. It was refreshing to hear a more varied collection of Hovhaness' sound than the repetitiveness that he is often criticized for. One of the criticisms of Hovhaness was that he was trying to be like Vaughan Williams in every piece (which is not true). He had a specific spiritual "vision" that lent a characteristic sound to his music like many other composers.
My one problem with this affordable disc is that the track listing is incorrect for the pieces: Mountain Idyll and Sonata Fred the Cat (both solo piano works). They are listed as having multiple tracks (#5-7) and (#9-12) when in actuality they are on the CD in single one track movements, so the CD comes out actually having 8 tracks (1 per work sampled). For a while I thought I had the wrong CD or it was defective. Then I figured it out by putting it in my CD Rom and it displayed the actual track listing with titles through Windows Media Player.
If that glitch doesn't bother you too much, this is a nice and afforable intro to Hovhaness' music. - - Max Stoltenberg, LPC
Hovhaness needs more maturity.......2005-02-02
I was very dissapointed when I heard this album. The sound is tinny, strident, and unbalanced. I can imagine how hard it is for unfunded orchestras to make recordings, but this sounds like a scraggly bunch of pickup players who play with no soul. Hovhaness demands a fuller, burnished tone. Even worse than the poor sound quality and sketchy intonation is the lack of a sense of flexibility and nuance. The hollowness of the playing would not be so offensive if there were a feeling of expansiveness, languidness, or generousity. I can't help thinking the composer would be very saddened by this effort. I hope Mr. Clark's realizes someday that music is not something that can be hammered out like a wall street stock deal. The kind of crassness on display here is better suited to commerce or (lamentably), politics.

ISSUE RESOLVED ON THE EUPHRATES.......2005-06-19
One question I might find among the more difficult in my life would be - which is my favourite Handel oratorio? I suspect that my answer would generally be 'the one I heard most recently', and that, as I write this, is Belshazzar. It is a magnificent thing, a heavenly thing. It has taken me longer than it should have to come to an appreciation of what makes Handel the phenomenon - as a genius, as an artist, as a craftsman - that he is, but I am comforted to reflect that no less a genius than Haydn, at the age of nearly 70 gaining a more thorough knowledge of Handel in performance, was driven to say that he felt a mere apprentice. In his sense of how to pace a dramatic narrative, in his instinct for how to use the human voice in song and above all in chorus, in the matchless flexibility and adroitness he displays at word-setting and in the audacity of his melodic and harmonic effects I can think of nobody who can approach Handel on his own terms.
Belshazzar was not a great success at the box-office, although this may have had more to do with difficulties in the casting than because it was deemed insufficiently biblical for oratorio, which seems to have been the fate of Hercules. It seems to me to be perfectly well described as oratorio in other ways too, with (for one thing) the extensive use of the chorus that we find in, say, Samson but not in Hercules. The one passage that cries out for visual effects is of course the apparition of the moving finger itself. Even here the composer can go a long way with sheer power of suggestion, by the strange unaccompanied violin figure creeping upwards and the frightened brevity of the vocal numbers. Otherwise for me Belshazzar is as much an oratorio as Samson is. It has the same librettist too, the crusty and formidable Jennens, who had also collaborated with Handel on Saul and on Messiah itself. Jennens' full text is not provided, but I think if you read the synopsis first and then follow the work from the headlines to each number you will have no difficulty in catching the words, so clear is the enunciation by soloists and chorus alike. As usual, Handel was driven to make alterations to the score for practical reasons. He had been a little concerned about its length, roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes in this performance, but where he wishes to be expansive he gives us full measure - two arias in Act I scene 4 take well over 7 minutes each. The liner-essay (a good one, by Anthony Hicks) goes into the issue of the version of the score used here, and I personally have no problem with it.
I have no faults to find with the performance in any way. Pinnock is an established specialist, the instruments are period instruments and vocal cadenzas at the end of the arias are kept minimal. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, James Bowman and David Wilson-Johnson are tried and trusted Handel singers and at their best here, and Nicolas Robertson and Richard Wistreich in the smaller parts are every bit as good. The part of Cyrus is a soprano part, taken by Catherine Robbin, and when I thought I heard just one touch of strain in `Destructive War' in the final scene she makes up for it instantly in her superb duet with Arleen Auger in the following number. Auger as Nitocris the mother of Belshazzar has the biggest part, and she covers herself with glory all the way through.
The recording is perfect, and when I saw an aria entitled `Destructive War, thy limits know' near the end I felt a sharp sense of irony in the year 2005. Cyrus, Handel, Jennens, you should all have been living at this hour.
Enjoiyable, but lacking, too........2004-08-16
This 3CD set of George Frederic Handel's (1685-1759) "Belshazzar", from Archiv Production, a division of Universal Music, is proof again that transfer from vinyl to tape to disc brings with it improvements in listening that make the purchase a worthwhile addition to anyone's listening library. Written in 1744, "Belshazzar" is an oratorio in the operatic style that is wonderful oratorio, but lacking the true depth one expects to hear in an opera. London opera audiences of Handel's day agreed, as both "Belshazzar" and Handel's other offering of the period in the same style, "Hercules", were not terribly successful. Instead of the scheduled 24 performances only 16 were given and Handel never offered a full season of oratorio again. The Libretto by Charles Jennens (1700-1773) is, as the production notes say, meant "not only to show the fall of Babylon but to show it as a fulfillment of divine prediction and to confirm the biblical testimony by reference to classical history." There's only one problem, as good a quality as the CDs are, it is not possible to follow the full libretto and the accompanying booklet includes no text, which is a shame. I think the listening experience would have been increased immeasurably if one was able to follow the text of what is being sung. Nonetheless the dramatic narrative is fluid and even, and the English Concert and Choir provide nice balance to the less full vocal passages, as in Disc 3s "Oh Glorious prince", cut 10. There is enough of this throughout to keep one's interest, but disappointing if what one expects is another ""Messiah".

Mélange.......2003-03-08
This CD is a mixture of songs that are "classic" only in a wide sense of that word. Admirer of Nana though I am, and happy though I am to add it to my vast treasure of her songs, I do wonder what prompted the issuance of this strange collection. Many of the selections are religious. Some of them are connected with the Roman Catholic liturgy: two in Spanish from the Missa Criolla, but in reverse order; one Latin "Panis Angelicus" appropriate to the Communion, but again in a strange position (and sung too rapidly). Then there is Beethoven's Ode to Joy from the Ninth Symphony, sung not in the expected German but in French and English. The CD opens with "L'Amour Gypsy" from "La Traviata," sung in French against a chorus from which it is difficult to distinguish Nana's voice. Strangest of all, perhaps, is a charming Scottish love song "Blow the Wind Southerly," attributed to a source called "The Episcopal(ian?) Anthology." Nana's great proficiency in languages is evident throughout this CD, and her singing is fine. However, the collection strikes me as "mix without match" or "mixtum gatherum." Hence the four stars rather than my usual five for anything Nana does.
The most sublime album ever recorded........2002-12-06
I have been collecting Nana Mouskouri CD's for years and have recently discovered many fabulous albums by her on LP (through ebay) which have never been released on CD (but which should be). Nana has, what in my opinion is, the most beautiful voice mankind has ever known. She is also very unique in that she can sing in many different languages perfectly (regardless of how fast or slow the rhythm of the song is). Even though she is Greek, she can sing in English, French, and German with no foreign accent at all. She also sings very beautifully in Spanish and Italian (but these languages are phonetically easy for a Greek, while English, French, and German are not). There are, of course, other wonderful singers who can sing spectacularly well in Spanish and Italian but whose pronunciation of English, French, and German is horrifyingly awful (I won't name them).
In this album, Nana has chosen a wonderful array of arias and sacred songs which she interprets amazingly well. Her voice is just as spectacular as ever. It's amazing how she goes from one language to another so gracefully and flawlessly. This is something very few artists can do. There ARE other artists who can do nice interpretations of SOME of these songs but no one who can do so with ALL of these songs. Most Greek, Italian, and Spanish vocalists cannot sing in French, German, or English (at least not very well). Likewise, most English, French, and German vocalists do very well in their respective languages but poorly with other languages. Nana seems to have no language barriers.
This CD is truly amazing.
Ageless Wonder.......2000-08-03
I have been a fan of Nana's for a long time and I never cease to be amazed by this woman's talent. I never expected that "Classic" would be this wonderful at this stage of her long career. The clarity and strength of her voice continues to shine through. With every passing year I have said to myself "Okay, I'm sure the next album will not be as good" because surely, age will catch up. Nana fans everywhere can delight in knowing that this is not the album in which age catches up to her voice. It is a wonderful Nana album, equal to other Nana albums. I absolutely adore it! Vive Nana!
Astounding.......2000-03-12
Once again, the Diva amazes me! This CD has been on my player since last Thanksgiving. Amazing performances, elegant arrangements. La Mouskouri's voice and interpretations are in "classic" form! This is my 128th Mouskouri album, and the quality of her work just gets better. I highly recommend this to people who've been enjoying her work for years, and it's an ideal introduction to the Classical side of this amazing woman.
Truly a Classic.......2000-02-19
I have nearly 60 Nana Mouskouri CDs in around 10 languages, but I must say that this new release has left me astounded! To have recorded such a credible album at this point in her career will assure old and new fans that Nana Mouskouri is still in top form and should stay that way for some time. On Classic, an album of mostly arias and sacred works, Mouskouri gracefully makes the transition through Greek, French, German, Italian, English, Latin and Spanish all on the same album. Usually her albums are in the same language and marketed to the corresponding countries. Classic is a refreshing change from that. Not that I can think of any significant weak points in Mouskouri's career, but this album should remain as a highlight. (Although I would compare it favorably to the recent Concert For Peace.)
