"We play Haggard and Jones... and anything by ol' George Strait," sings Damon Gray, and that summarizes Gray's sound to a tee. Everything on this New Mexico-born singer's debut is flawless but wholly received: lines you can finish the first time through, melodies you've already heard on any number of Strait singles, themes as old as the hills, phrasing and arrangements courtesy of the Mark Chesnutt catalog. There's not one thing here to distinguish Gray as his own man. Then again, what's wrong with modeling yourself after Jones, Haggard, and Strait? Gray's smooth and twangy tenor is applied here to state-of-the-art, turn-of-the-century honky-tonk, to country songs that, while predictable, are solid enough. The charm of Lookin' for Trouble is precisely in the way you've heard it all before--and in the way you know it's all still true. --David Cantwell

Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson plays a deeper and darker shade of blues when he's performing under his own name, and Lookin' for Trouble, his first solo studio recording in six years, successfully showcases an assortment of traditional styles all invigorated by Wilson's virtuoso harp work. Wilson's continuing evolution as a singer and songwriter (he had a hand in composing nine of the tunes) is impressive, but his harmonica heroics, such as on the echo-heavy, midnight-blues rendition of Jimmy Rogers's "Money Marble & Chalk," remain the primary attraction. With his working band--featuring yet another hot young guitar discovery in Troy Gonyea--behind him, Wilson rolls through 14 songs, mixing a bit of horn-powered jump blues, some Memphis soul, and a tasty slice of New Orleans (via Dave Bartholomew's "Hook Line & Sinker") into his classic Chicago sensibilities. The title tune, co-written with fiancée Amanda Taylor, gets two takes (a straight-ahead shuffle and a harder-edged rock rendition) to bring the total to 15 tracks, most of which have different approaches but all of which are unified by Wilson's Herculean harp work and experienced grasp of bedrock blues styles. --Michael Point

Captures Kim Wilson Live.......2004-04-19
"Lookin' for Trouble" represents the spirit and energy of a live Kim Wilson show. While Wilson may not have the level of vocal "chops" that he displays in his harp playing, he more than holds his own as a singer and interpreter of the blues. Having just seen a Wilson show at a local Boston area club, I enthusiastically recommend not only his excellent discs, of which "Lookin' for Trouble" is one, but also encourage listeners to see him live. He and his band have such commitment, technique, and passion that one is swept up in the joy of a uniquely American art form.
Lookin For Trouble? You've Come to the Right Place!!.......2003-10-17
Kim Wilson, leader of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and all-around harmonica player extraordinaire, gives us a first-rate goody bag of music in his 2003 effort, Lookin For Trouble. All of the traditional blues numbers really shine, in particular "Hand to Mouth," a six-minute, mid-tempo workout strongly reminiscent of Howlin' Wolf's "Spoonful". Great singing! Also, there are not one but two different renditions of the title track, a full-throttle rocker to open the set and a T-Birdesque shuffle in the middle; the band really cooks on both numbers! Another band standout is Jr's Jump, featuring great guitar by Troy Gonyea and a fine Hammond B3 organ solo by Mark Stevens. Kim's harp work is at it's soulful best on the blues standard "Money, Marbles, and Chalk." It's wonderful, even if the harp is mixed up a little too far. Most listeners will indeed love this album, but blues purists may be put off by the fact that some numbers are not traditional blues but instead are performed in "West Coast House Party" style (a name taken from a solo album by former T-Birds bandmate Kid Ramos), a mixture of jump blues, New Orleans shuffle, and 40's pop. These numbers, including "Hurt on Me," "Love My Baby," and especially "Hook, Line and Sinker" are fine but may be a little too sugary-sweet for some tastes. Also, the sound quality is a little raw. Still, there are many juicy numbers on this lengthy CD to enjoy, so you might indeed want to purchase it. Because, if you're lookin' for trouble, you've come to the right place!
Showing Us His Real Side........2003-09-27
I feel that what some of the more negative reviewers are missing in their comments is the fact that this is a raw CD. It was cut on the fly. Kim seemed to put more effort in the feel and the soul of this record instead of focusing on the nerdy aspects of sound and perfecting his vocals. It's raw & real, it's down &dirty and more that, it is honest & sincere . He draws from the spirits of Howlin Wolf, Papa George Lightfoot, Little Walter andSnooky Pryor, non of whom were vocal virtuosos to the main steam public, however, they are geniuses to me! Kim lets us view him from the inside out. He forgets about pleasing the main stream joe public and focuses on pleasing himself, it comes through loud -n- clear and I love it. Lazy Lester never cared if you didn't like his singin' he just knew he loved singin'. Kim has shown us here that the pupil has become the teacher. I say Teach on! I don't care what it says in any past liner notes. This ablum shows us and tells us what he's really believing...and I 'm buyin' it!
Not Quite Up To Standard!.......2003-09-23
Kim Wilson is among the finest harp players of all times and his playing on this disc is exceptional. However, that playing is sometimes overshadowed by Wilson's rather limited abilities as a vocalist. Wilson's limited vocal range is a definite draw back to this CD and one that narrows considerably the creative envelope in which his band plays. Much of the disc seems retro, flat and repetitive. If you have to have this, buy it used and then look for other Wilson releases like "This Joint Is Smokin'".
Excellent Album from a blues master.......2003-09-21
This is an excellent collection of varied blues/jump styles from Mr. Wilson. I suppose if you want strictly blues you might be disappointed, but I think the variety makes it much more interesting. "That's Life" was supposed to be his best effort, but I think this is far superior. Now I'd like to see him live.

This CD RAWKS!!!!!.......2004-10-24
The first time I heard this CD I was 15 years old. I was blown away to say the least. I'm 40 now and I still listen to it. This is classic Canadian rock at its best. Holly Woods has a voice unlike any other. And to hear her live is a religious experience. Lookin' For Trouble is a CD that rocks from start to finish. You just don't hear straight ahead rock n roll like this anymore. Especially with a female vocalist. Give it a spin. Its my favorite CD of theirs. I have them all and love them all but this is the best work they've ever done.

BLUES LIKE DAD DID IT!.......2001-07-11
THIS IS A SUPERB CD! EDDIE JR. HAS A STRONG RESEMBLENCE TO HIS DAD, EDDIE TAYLOR, IN HIS PLAYING AND SINGING. GREAT HORNS ADD TO HIS BEAT, BUT HE HAS THE OLD CHICAGO BLUES RHYTHM STILL THERE. WHAT A TERRIFIC DEDICATION CD TO HIS FATHER, WHICH HIS MOM AND BROTHERS ALSO ARE ON HERE TOO! ONCE YOU HEAR 1 SONG, YOU ARE HOOKED . I LOVE THE JIMMY REED SONGS AND EDDIE TAYLOR SONGS HE RE MADE ALSO! JUST A PERFECT CD!
Outstanding Chicago Blues from a new generation.......1999-07-31
This is a fine example of Chicago Blues from the well known sax of Eddie Shaw to Martin Lane's harmonica and the two Taylor family members on drums. But Edward is the centerpiece and is sweet on both vocals and guitar in this fine tribute to his father. This album is very inspired to listen to. Listen alongside his father's album "I feel so bad" on Hightone and you can hear that Edward got it from Eddie.
Perfect, the album is everything music should be........1999-04-26
If this album does not move you, not only do you have a hole in your soul, but your head as well. Everything a young american needs. All the musicians and volcalists are the best that american culture has evolved into. Not even the aliens from outerspace could come up with or duplicate this music. Every human emotion and situation is exemplified through this music. This album is a tribute to Eddie Taylor by his son, Edward Taylor, family members and other musicians who played with Eddie Taylor. Everything is perfect, turn the music up loud and enjoy. Nobody outshines each other, the music is a concerted effort to pay tribute to a Great Blues Legend. In a perfect world albums like this would be the norm and sell millions and millions of copies, we have alot of work to do. Buy this album and save the human race. This review by Olen Perkins

Damon.......2002-01-12
The received this album from my manager/friend out of Nashville here not too long ago. I've had time to go over it. It's good! Damon really has the ability to sing. He has a sense of character that allows him the free field of doing what he wants with his voice. He has the traditional country vibe, but also the get up and go to get along with the people that are now in the contemporary country world! It's rare to find someone with that mix. I hope Damon releases more albums. Broken Bow should advertise this upcoming singer more often. After all, Strait is still around striking up #1's after many years! There's always room for another like George.
He'll Make it!.......2000-05-10
I would just like to say that I am very proud of Damon. I remember when my dad once played music with him. He has come a long way, and he's going to keep going. He is a very good musician. "He can play the heak out of that guitar!" I can't wait till I see him on the Grand Old Opery on June 10, 2000.

finally made it.......2000-04-12
hey folks this guy has been working his butt off trying to be heard ever since I can remember I just heard his song on the radio the other day I was shocked , but I wondered what took so long, I grew up with Damon and his family in New Mexico and i know he deserves all the recognition he can get.He is a great talent in
the eyes of us New Mexicans. Give EM Hell Damon!
Thatta boy Damon.......2000-03-14
I grew up with Damons singing in our home town of Socorro, did alot of beer drinking and backroad driving with him to,and I'm here to tell you this is a real country boy, not no silver spoon imatation.Good to hear Damon again it's been a few years, this is what country is supposed to sound like,And this is the guy who's supposed to be singing it. Dewey Christensen (Tularosa New Mexico) SHOW'EM WHAT WE"RE TALKIN ABOUT DAMON!
Country Music is still alive and kickin'.......2000-03-07
It's so great to be able to listen to country music once again. With the way country music has been treated in recent years, I'm very delighted that this young man has been able to show the industry that country music does exist! Looking for Trouble has a wonderful and playful cut along with Terrible Two's. The first song 'YOU' on the CD has such a great sound that you will want to hear it over and over. This album is filled full of great country music, such as 'Your Memory Walks Through Walls'. I can hardly wait for the next album as I'm sure there is more great music to out of Damon Gray! I believe we have only seen the beginning of an artist that has many more things to come our way. From all country music fans, THANK YOU!
