About the Artist
Jack Tottle is an internationally-known musician, author, and composer. His songs have been recorded by numerous bluegrass artists including James King, the Bluegrass Cardinals and Blue Highway. (For three months Blue Highways recording of his "Its a Long, Long Road" was #1 on Bluegrass Unlimiteds national airplay charts and his "Id Rather Be a Lonesome Pine" was nominated for IBMAs Song of the Year award.) Tottle is also the founder and director of the Bluegrass and Country Music Program at East Tennessee State University, now in its seventeenth year and the only program of its kind at a four-year institution. Among its alumni are such noted musicians as Adam Steffey, Barry Bales and Tim Stafford, all of whom have won Grammy awards for their work with Alison Krauss and Union Station. Other alumni include Rounder recording artist Beth Stevens, of the Stevens Sisters, and country star Kenny Chesney, who was recently named best new male vocalist by the Academ! y of Country Music. BAND_MEMBERS: Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Tim Stafford, Ron Block, Pat Enright, Bela Fleck, Mark Schatz, Charlie Cushman, Wayne Taylor, Glen Rose, Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury
Product Description
The Bluegrass Sound is a compelling CD featuring sixteen new songs and tunes by singer/mandolinist Jack Tottle along with the winners of eighty-seven International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards and fourteen Grammys. The album showcases the exceptional musicianship of legendary innovators Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck, super-pickers Stuart Duncan, Ron Block, Tim Stafford, Charlie Cushman, Glen Rose and Mark Schatz, plus premier vocalists Pat Enright, Wayne Taylor and Ronnie and Del McCoury.
For anyone with more than a passing interest in bluegrass, The Bluegrass Sound not only provides some excellent new music, but also highlights modern bluegrass close and vital relationship with its roots. There are songs about remarkable musical figuresboth well-known and obscure. There are vocals and instrumentals which are intimately linked with the dance tunes, traditional mountain songs, blues, jazz and gospel music from which bluegrass has drawn inspiration over the years. As award-winning guitarist Dan Crary remarks, "If youre new to bluegrass music this CD is maybe the best introduction ever recorded. Or, if youre a veteran fan, its about to be the next great bluegrass album."
A twenty-page booklet -- complete with abundant photographs -- provides numerous insights into the roots of bluegrass as reflected by the music contained in The Bluegrass Sound. In addition, CD-ROM technology allows the listener to access -- and to print out if desired -- an additional thirty-six pages of information about the players, the history of bluegrass music, listening suggestions and more. For back porch or living room musicians (of whom there are many among bluegrass aficionados) the Bluegrass Sound Song Book is also included on CD-ROM with lyrics and chord charts.

Like Nickel Creek and the Duhks (and Alison Krauss and Union Station before them), Crooked Still employ bluegrass elements as a springboard for an eclectic, expansive dynamic. Behind the sweetly ethereal and occasionally jazzy vocals of Aoife O' Donovan, the interplay of Gregory Liszt's banjo, Rushad Eggleston's cello (both bowed and flatpicked), and Corey DiMario's double bass gives the young New England band a sound that is closer to chamber-grass than hoedown. Though none of the material on this label debut is original, the transformations typically are, with the murder balladry of "Little Sadie" given a surprisingly sprightly reading, Bob Dylan's early "Oxford Town" taken at double-time speed, and Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen" sounding more meditative than bluesy. The band and veteran producer Lee Townsend enlist a number of guests for harmony and instrumental support, but it's plain that the drummerless quartet has the talent and musical vision to deliver on this album's considerable promise. --Don McLeese

hauntingly beautiful.......2007-05-14
my wife and i heard aoife o'donovan a couple of times when she was one of the singers with wayfaring strangers. when we were perusing the concert schedule at the somerville theatre my wife recognized her name as the vocalist for the band crooked still. we decided to give it a try but we weren't sure what to expect. within the first 10 seconds of the concert i was in love with the group. we travelled over to vermont later that month to hear them again and then travelled down to club passim in cambridge a couple of months later for a tuesday 10 o'clock at night concert to try out new material. we're going to see them again in july. i've bought four copies of each of their cd's, one copy for us and the others for friends. i am thinking of rewriting my will and leaving everything to aoife if she will sing at my funeral.
i really like wayfaring strangers and have lent my wayfaring strangers cd's to friends and relatives. hardly anyone cares for them as much as i do and i understand that it can take some getting used to. crooked still is not like that. it is so accessible that i think just about anyone would like it and some people will love it.
Shaken By A Low Sound .......2007-05-13
Great CD, I bought it after hearing then in concert!!
Solid follow-up to "Hop High", but with a muted edge.......2007-05-10
So, what do you get when you combine a lead singer with an airy, sultry, velvety smooth voice, a rocking double bass, a banjo player that actually earned his Ph.D. from MIT, and a cellist that's totally bonkers? You get Crooked Still, a band who's unique style of bluegrass music is turning heads wherever they play. I had the fortune of stumbling across these guys at Merlefest and I was hooked from the first song. Their style of music is generally referred to as "Alternative Bluegrass"; basically, they take a traditional song, break it down, and then add their own unique rhythm and melody. These guys take a _very_ creative approach to bluegrass/American folk music (for example, flat-picking a cello), and if your listening habits tend towards the more traditional approach, this may not be the band for you. As good as they are, I'm hoping at some point they will start creating some original material. Also, as many have noted, their second album "Shaken by a low sound" lacks the freshness and edge of both their first album and the live performances of the songs on the album--though that may reflect the influence of the label rather than a conscious decision by the band. Bottom line: if you can only purchase one Crooked Still album, get the first one, "Hop High". If you get a chance to see this band live, do so. You won't be disappointed.
The Madman of the Cello!.......2007-02-27
This record is fine...wonderful, in fact. The band (a cello-bass-banjo power trio!) combines a profound understanding of the "trad" repertoire with hot chops and a hot chick singer with a breathy-but-tasteful delivery. BUT GO SEE THIS BAND LIVE!! I have just returned from Wintergrass and feel safe in saying that I have seen the future (of something or other) and his name is Rushad Eggleston, virtuoso madman. Rushad is evolving into a major force and, in addition his magical cello, he has--for lack of a better word--a schtick you have to see to believe. He is the Jimi-Django of this fabulous aggregation. GO SEE HIM BEFORE HE EXPLODES. Holy, holy bejesus!
Love at first sight.......2007-02-06
I love this band and this CD does them great credit. My favorite cut is Come on in my kitchen, a song I knew 40 years ago but they do it here with depth and feeling.

Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The "classics" here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" we also get "Dueling Banjos" from the film Deliverance, a cut that is to classic bluegrass what Walter Murphy is to Beethoven. There are less immediately obvious choices too, though. If your previous exposure to bluegrass doesn't go beyond the Holy Trinity of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers--for example, if you've never heard J.D. Crowe & the New South's stellar example of progressive bluegrass, "Old Home Place," or experienced Jimmy Martin lay down the law on his rousing "You Don't Know My Mind"--then you're in for a high-lonesome surprise. --David Cantwell

Album Description
Porter Wagoner is a much misunderstood artist. Singing about the peaks and troughs of the human experience from inside a purple sequinned Nudie suit he has created the most extraordinary catalogue of any country music artist, and quite possibly any popular performer, ever. Don't believe me? Then check out the skull cracking and heart rendering reverberations of The Rubber Room, the troubled soul of George Leroy Chickashea, the desperate howl that is Lonely Coming Down and the seething hurt that is Fairchild. Yet amongst this human train-wreck there are jewels of burning pathos and profound spirituality like Moments of Meditation and Little Boy's Prayer. It is indeed this collision of an image that is at times admittedly pure kitsch, with songs and a delivery that are soul-shakingly sincere, that makes Porter Wagoner perhaps the most compelling recording artist of all time. Still not convinced? Then go now, right now, and listen to The Party by Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton. For the first time the darker, more poetic highlights of Porter Wagoner's astounding career have been compiled with love and care, featuring a slew of tracks never before sighted on CD. Once you have heard this album you will never be quite the same ever again!Psychotronic, dark, heartfelt country... with a touch of showbiz! First time on CD! Deluxe collectors 16 page package featuring original LP artwork and exclusive liner notes. All tracks are remastered in 2006 from the original master tapes! Compiled and curated by noted musician (Snog, Soma, Black Lung) and film composer David Thrussell.

Pictures From Life's Darker Side.......2007-04-28
The fact that Porter Wagoner brought non-other than James Brown in to perform at The Grand Ol' Opry should give you some indication that he is much more than a pompador & purple Nudie suit.
Johnny Cash once remarked, "No one tells a story like Porter Wagoner" & the likes of "Fairchild" & "Jim Johnson" are all the proof you need. Murder, lust, madness,& sheer unmitigated heartbreak abound here. In short, this as macabre as Country Music gets. With perhaps, just the right amount of unintentional kitch thrown in to sweeten the deal. Regardless of that, the sincerity of of "Moments Of Meditation" & "Lonely Comin' Down" cannot be denied.
Though perhaps somewhat overshadowed by a certain tall haired protege, many of the songs here reveal not only a consummate craftsmen, but also someone willing to push the boundries of his genre. I'd be hard pressed to find another song quite like "Rubber Room" filed under "Country". At times, it borders on 60's Psyche. Fortunately, Wagoner's forays into Disco have not been included.
Songs like, "Fairchild" & "The First Mrs. Jones" have more in common with the Pulp Noir novels of Jim Thompson than anything you might have seen on Hee Haw. Despite sometimes lush arrangements, these songs capture the true bleakness lying behind Country's shopworn cliches. Many of the songs here bring a chill as they tickle the funnybone.
While Hank Williams Sr.'s Luke The Drifer recordings are an obvious influence, I'd say it all lies somewhere inbetween a Countryfied Serge Gainsbourg & Leon Payne's "Psycho".
Maudlin, macabre & heartfelt, this is one of the finest Wagoner collections on offer. Not to mention some of the darkest stuff to ever come out of Nashville. It's rapdily becoming one of my favorite Country albums of all time. Much more than the man who introducted us to Dolly Parton, here's proof that Wagoner is truely one of the most underrated figures in Country Music.
Who knew life was so desperate in the country?.......2007-04-20
Desperation, poverty, adultery, insanity, murder... they're all present and accounted for. Vintage country music is great stuff! An excellent collection from one of country music's unsung greats. Hipsters will love this...
Haunting Country Storytelling .......2007-03-29
First off, this is not a greatest hits package, so if you are interested in that, you might want to look at some of the RCA packages that are excellent. But . . .
Storytelling has long been a basic facet of Southern life and country music strongly reflects the storytelling infleunce. There was a time when those stories weren't all happy, fluffy pieces like you will hear today. Go far enough back in country music history and murder songs abound, some repentant, others defiant. "Rubber Room" compiles a ranging collection of story songs recorded by Porter Wagoner. The truth is that these songs aren't always pleasant and they aren't feel good. But they plunge into the depths of the human condition with deep insight. What you get is a portrait of an extremely strong artist performing some powerfully written songs. Summarizing them is difficult so I would say they best thing you could do is experience this CD. Everything from miscegenation to adultery to the paralyzing impact of alcohol is explored here. And it helps to underscore what all of us Southerners have known, Porter Wagoner is a fine singer and interpeter of song.
if John Waters put together a Porter comp, this would be it.......2007-02-21
Great stuff...the kind you will never hear on the radio...unless you listened to Laura Cantrell's show on WFMU.
Revolting Beyond Belief.......2007-01-13
As a lifelong Porter fan, I have been waiting for decades for a
CD overview of Porter. Instead, I get this awful collection of
duds that could only be titled "The Worst Of Porter Wagoner."

Jim Reeves.......2007-06-08
Good compilation. However, on some of the numbers the background music practically covers Jim's great voice. I know strings were in at that time, which really dates the recordings, but somehow they could be toned down a bit. Altogether, a great addition to your collection.

Awesome Voice!.......2005-08-09
This guy has got the richest most sincere voice in the history of male singers in my book. Sweet, sad and silly lyrics adorn all of these songs, and his voice just adds to the quality of the overall music. I definitely recommend this for those who enjoy oldies but goodies.

Both musical careers of Jim Ed Brown.......2007-05-13
The CD features songs Jim Ed Brown recorded with his sisters, Maxine and Bonnie, and later as a solo artist. The Browns songs include their #1 crossover, "The Three Bells (Los Trois Cloches)" and the equally spiritual themed ballad, "Scarlet Ribbons (For Her Hair)". Both favorite songs of mine. They cover The Louvin Brothers' "I Take The Chance", Hank Locklin's "Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On" and "They Call The Wind Maria" (from the musical "Paint Your Wagon"). Wish this CD also included their cover of Jim Reeves' "Then I'll Stop Loving You". Jim Ed's solo hits include "Pop A Top", written by the late Nat Stuckey and later covered by Alan Jackson. Also beautiful, uplifting songs, "Angel's Sunday" and "Morning".
Jim Brown.......2007-01-19
This CD brought back so many great memories from our teenage years. Always loved The Three Bells and now we can listen to it "whenever". Great music.
Great Album.......2005-11-07
Jim Ed Brown remains one of the purist voices in Country Music, and it is doubtful there will ever be anyone as smooth. This album begins with 6 of the biggest hits of the Browns (Jim Ed, and his Sisters). While I realize this review is for Jim Ed, the harmonies of the Brown trio are simply astounding. There is absolutely nothing to compare to the vocals you'll hear on "I Take the Chance" or the famous "Three Bells". After leaving the Browns for his solo career, Jim Ed retained his trademark style of delivering a song, but like may in the early '70's, seemed to have lost his musical roots. The selection of songs presented here are good, but it also includes the sappy and tired/goofy sound of the dying Nashville Sound, the best examples being "Man and Wife Times" and "Angels Sunday"......if you can keep you're lunch down after hearing these, you're a better man than me! BUT, such was the sound of the day, and Jim Ed redeemed himself with more traditional songs, such as: "Pop a Top" and "Bottle, Bottle". If I had to make a sincere criticism of this album, it would be the lack of numbers including his duet with Helen Cornelius. But, the CD does run nearly an hour, so maybe it was best to leave these off. Still, all in all, this is a nearly perfect collection of songs for the Jim Ed Brown fan.
Take the Chance!.......2004-05-07
Jim Ed Brown from Sparkman, Arkansas had 52 Billboard hits from 1954 to 1981. The 27 year sequence is unique: 16 were performed as `The Browns' with his sisters Bonnie and Maxine, 10 were duets with Helen Cornelius (of Hanibal, Missouri) and the balance were his own singles. "The Essential Jim Ed Brown" has none of his duets with Helen. Those are available on their "Anthology" CD. Keep scrolling down! Some of my amazon friends may be unaware. This particular 20 track CD does feature a good solid sampling of Jim Ed's solos as well as his duets with his siblings. The latter are the strongest tracks, especially "I Take the Chance (1956), "Here Today and Gone Tomorrow" (1955), and their first chart hit, "Looking back to See" (1954). There is also a wonderful 1960 rendition of "Send Me the Pillow That You Dream On", which also made the charts via Hank Locklin and Johnny Tillotson. Jim Ed does quite well on his own with "Sometime Sunshine" (1974) and "Gently Comes Love" which somehow failed to make the charts. There are two classic country drinking songs "Pop A Top" (1967) and "Bottle, Bottle" (also '67). Jim Ed was a versatile guy but this reviewer prefers his more mellow "Nashville Sound" releases and not the more upbeat tracks like "Southern Lovin'. Other amazon friends have written that Jim Ed is very similar to the great Jim Reeves. This reviewer disagrees. Both are country greats from the old school. Listeners can enjoy Gentleman Jim, Jim Ed -and his talented sisters-without comparisons. The "Essential" group appears to have done it again. This series does a consistently good job of providing solid compilations of country music from the good old days long since gone. Pardon the pun but one may safely "take a chance' on the "Essential Jim Ed Brown" or most compilations from the "Essentials" series.
In the shadow of Jim Reeves.......2003-05-25
Jim Ed Brown's recording career spanned a quarter of a century, during which time he had plenty of success. Even after his recording career was over, he remained an active performer for many years after - indeed, he may still be performing. His early recordings were made with one or both of his sisters. He then spent some years as a solo singer before teaming up with Helen Cornelius for some duets in the seventies.
The early recordings with his sisters include The three bells (a translated version of a French song), which provided the Browns with an international pop hit - by far the biggest success of Jim Ed's career.
Jim was an excellent singer, but he sounded a lot like Jim Reeves, an even better singer, so while Jim Ed Brown could (and did) sing love songs superbly, it is difficult to avoid thinking of Jim Reeves when listening to him sing those songs. For that reason alone, I prefer (when he's on his own) listening to him singing more upbeat songs, like Pop a top (revived by Alan Jackson on his covers album, Under the influence), You can have her, Southern loving and (best of all) Barroom pals and goodtime gals.
When he teamed up with Helen, the comparison with Jim Reeves (who rarely recorded any duets) is forgotten, but those recordings are outside the scope of this collection. To me, those recordings (including the brilliant Christmas song Fall softly snow, mentioned by earlier reviewers) are the most enjoyable of Jim Ed's career, but as I write this, they are all out of print.
If you enjoy the music of Jim Reeves, you will probably enjoy this collection. If you don't like Jim Reeves, pass this by.

Wonderful memories.......2007-03-14
Merle has that wonderful early country music warmth when he sings. It is all about his experiences and his feelings. He doesn't rely on all the electronic back ups to high light his voice, it is just him.

You've gotta love this CD - It's the best of Merle.......2005-11-03
I was fascinated to find out that Merle either wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on this CD. I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes the "real country" music. All you have to do is listen to this CD and you will know that Merle has lived what he writes about. You will like this CD!

Still the best.......2006-08-24
I still have the LP of this disc that I received as a birthday present when it came out. I can remember the night Campbell and John Hartford appeared on "The Smothers Brothers Show" to sing "Gentle on My Mind"; the next summer The Glen Campbell Show replaced the Smothers Brothers. Not that I was happy to see them go, but it meant I got to hear Campbell's new music at least once a week.
What of this disc? "Gentle on My Mind" is the greatest of a list of great Campbell songs; it was his starmaker. This album sounds quite a lot like the title track; it doesn't have as many of the orchestrations and "produced" sounds of his later hits. Those are fine too (especially "By the Time I get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", and "Rhinestone Cowboy") but these songs focus more on the voice and the guitar. If you like the produced sound, you'll enjoy "You're My World" and some of the others. Besides the title track, I remember loving "Mary in the Morning" and "Without Her". The album closes with a convincing cover of "Crying".
Wow, and this is four bucks? Gotta have it at that price.
Still A Great Listen.......2002-07-06
I hadn't listened to this in over 25 years. I have come to appreciate Campbell's use of voice and instrumental backup. Some wonderful songs here like Catch the Wind and It's Over as well as the title cut. An excellent listen.

Buck Owens's role as co-host of Hee Haw hokum was imprinted so strongly on the public's consciousness that it tends to overshadow his musical legacy. As this set of chart-toppers attests, no country artist dominated the early-to-mid 1960s like the Bard of Bakersfield. His twisted, elongated syllables and twangy interplay with guitarist Don Rich put a signature stamp on material ranging from the uptempo "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail"--a pop crossover smash as well--to the heartfelt balladry of "Together Again" and "Only You (Can Break My Heart)." A late '80s revival of "Streets of Bakersfield" in duet with Dwight Yoakam, Owens's leading disciple, put Buck back atop the charts. Liner testimonials from Chris Isaak and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons attest to the reach of his influence, while his breakthrough hit, "Act Naturally," inspired a popular cover (on the Help! album) by the Beatles. --Don McLeese
Album Description
This collection documents the hits of country music icon Buck Owens as he defined the Bakersfield sound and became a major architect of west coast country overall.

Buck Owens again.......2007-06-09
I love this CD. When I was a child I used to listen to Buck Owens all the time. As I grew I just started listening to newer singers. I went on the Web and found the album and decided to order it. I love it. I like listening to the older singers again. Listening to the older singers bring back my childhood and my life when I used to live in Idaho.

Where so many duet projects seem like shotgun marriages, this one sounds like a labor of love, celebrating Southern music as a common denominator that transcends racial and categorical divides. Among the highlights, the pairing of Lyle Lovett and Al Green finds revelation within the funky groove of "Funny How Time Slips Away," while the album-closing "Patches"--with George Jones playing father to B.B. King's son--achieves a spine-tingling majesty. Though Natalie Cole and Reba McEntire misconnect on "Since I Fell for You," Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave) and the late Conway Twitty are at their soulful best on "Rainy Night in Georgia." --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
rainy night in Georgia..........2007-06-22
so I'm in Atlanta a few years back visiting old friends, it's a rainy night and we're kicking back. I see a video of Sam Moore/Conway Twitty singing a duet of RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA that touches my soul. The next day I run out and pick up this CD. It still is one of my favorite cds of all time. Rhythm and blues artists singing with county and western stars, sounds like one of those hit and miss concepts but this cd is all hits. Sadly, it was the last recording Conway Twitty ever made but what a pairing, the soulful Sam Moore and the gravel voiced Conway. Other favorites are WHEN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY BABY, Patti LaBelle and Travis Tritt. THE WEIGHT, Staple Singers and Marty Stuart. AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING, Vince Gill and Gladsy Knight. A smashing fun rendition of SOMETHIN ELSE, Little Richard and Tanya Tucker. Great music!
Rhythm Country and Blues.......2007-06-11
I'd been looking for this but couldn't remember the name!! I kept looking and found it on Amazon. The music? Incredible!
Rhythm+Country+Blues = AMERICAN Music!.......2007-06-04
It's all been said here, and quite well, too. But if you are - or know somebody - who was born in 1977 or later, tell them that this disc is a stone-MUST HAVE if one wishes to see how (what used to be known as) Rock and Roll originated. Oh...MY fave? Trisha/Aaron's "I Fall To Pieces." Patsy is smiling from above...
RHYTHM COUNTRY & BLUES.......2006-11-06
THIS CD IS VERY GOOD LISTENING FOR ALL AGES, FEATURING THE MUSIC & VOICES OF MANY KNOWN ARTISTS.
Wonderful!.......2006-07-25
A friend loaned me a copy of this CD last week and I've been frantically searching for the name of it ever since so that I could buy my own copy and one for my folks. I'm glad I finally located it.
I don't know how I missed this when it came out but I'm glad someone found it for me. I'll be recommending it to all of my musically inclined friends.
My favorite cut is Rainy Night in Georgia; it is pure pleasure to listen to my old favorite Sam Moore. I'd lost track of Conway after he deserted Rock and Roll for Country but this song reminds me why I loved him when he sang "Make Believe" so many years ago. Travis Tritt and Patti LaBelle were made for each other, as were Al Green and Lyle Lovett. Aaron Neville is always a pleasure and Tanya Tucker and Little Richard are pure fun. Mavis Staples is always great when she sings "The Weight" and this version with Marty Stuart is no exception. These are my favorites but there isn't a bad song on the CD.
This is a "must have" for anyone who loves all forms of music.

A GREAT COLLECTION FROM A GREAT COUNTRY SINGER. IF YOU ARE A MEL TILLIS FAN THIS ONE IS A MUST HAVE.
Great album.......2007-01-09
Anyone who is a fan of Mel Tillis will enjoy the song selection on this CD.
I've Been Waiting for this one.......2006-10-28
If you've been looking for a definitive collection of one of Country Music's premier songwriters, well, here it is. This is a Raven Records release (Australian) and I admit to be a bit hesitant to order it. But, the sound and mixing is just fine and well worth the affordable price. This CD contains 25 songs (4 bonus tracks; including "Detroit City"). The earliest Mel hits are here, including "Sawmill", "Midnight....", and "Arms of a Fool". Best of all, they're Original, not lame re-recordings. There's also a fine set of liner notes which provide a detailed bio and quick-discography review of Mel for the decade of '70-'80. Get it while it's still available.
Eastwood Smile, Robert Redford Hair .......2006-07-12
I hate to sound like a broken record in my reviews, but here's another career retrospective that has been needed for years. Mel Tillis was a fine singer in that 1970s vein of country music, and he was an even better writer (Detroit City, now thats a song). Another victim of shoddy collections, Tillis gets his due in this nice lineup of hits and some lesser known interpretations of his compositions that hit for other singers. My favorite Tillis cut has to be "Send Me Down to Tuson," though "Coca Cola Cowboy" and "I've Got the Horse" are up there. And there are real nice liner notes. Why did an Australian company have to do this release, don't American labels understand what they have in the vaults? And again the broken record--dare we dream of a Bear Family box!
A Worthy Mel Tillis Compilation is Here at Last!!!.......2006-04-05
Several Tillis Compilations have been released over the Years, all of them SHORT, and all of them lacking many essential songs. FINALLY Raven Records has blessed us with this Treasure of Country Music...25 Wonderful Tunes, covering Multi Labels, and including all of Tillis' Greatest Sides, from His own #1 Country Hits to those He wrote that were Major Hits for others; An informative CD Booklet with some good Photos, and Excellent Remastered Sound. I am listening as I Type, it's very refreshing to Hear Old-Time Country, with Fiddles and Steel Guitar, and REAL Heartfelt Honky Tonk Vocals, unlike so many Rock-Oriented "Country" Songs of Today...Highest Reccomendation
