Tennessee Ernie Ford's warm, commanding baritone lives on most dramatically in his vivid rendition of the Merle Travis-penned coal miner's song "Sixteen Tons," which topped the national charts in 1955. But by the 1960s, Ford, a leading entertainer in his time and host of an NBC-TV variety show that ran from 1956 to 1961, had turned heavily to sacred music. By the time of his death in 1991, he'd recorded no fewer than 81 albums of gospel and spiritual music. Some of Ford's most memorable hymns are collected in this ample set, which includes both the familiar ("How Great Thou Art," "Rock of Ages") and the relatively obscure ("When God Dips His Pen of Love in My Heart," "Blessed Assurance"). Across the years, Ford's voice continues to echo with heartfelt earnestness and warm reassurance that soothes the soul and transcends the test of time as he magnificently makes these gospel masterpieces his own. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Good Old-Time Gospel Music.......2007-05-05

Tennessee Ernie Ford is one of my favorite baritone singers. This collextion is derived and put together by Bill Gaither and his production staff. T.E.F. had the smoothest voice in early country and gospel music. If you like old-time gospel, you will like this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic as always!.......2007-03-20

Great selection of hymns by one of the all time greats! I really am enjoying this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-01-27

My husband started me on the hunt for this rare edition of TEF gospel hymns. I surprised him with it and he immediately put it in the cd player. It is totally awesome. He practically listens to it every evening. It is indeed one of his most prized possessions.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Better.......2007-01-16

A wonderful simple mix of arrangements and genre....some traditional classics, bluegrass and spirituals....and on many selections Ernie invites a quartet or more of other singers to join him. I miss Ernie Ford...a magnificent, underrated talent [even in his heyday]. A charming host who was unafraid to declare his homage to the Almighty at the close of each performance.

5 out of 5 stars One of Ernie Ford's BEST.......2007-01-10

This was a Great album on records and an outstanding job was performed in the "CD"conversion. In my opinion, Ernie Ford was one of the finest Gospel Singers of the twentieth century.

4 out of 5 stars My kids like it.......2001-03-21

I grew up listening to this singer's popular music (anyone out there know where to find his song "One Suit"?) but my husband didn't and he likes it too now. Some songs may be "rural" sounding but some numbers have a great sort of big band swing and a lot are just fun. His voice is surprisingly veratile and the arrangements are well done. Every song on here may not be my style but they aren't all the sometimes sappy hymn-style either. If you like his gospel songs that is no guarantee you'll like this for sure but if you just like his voice this will expand your appreciation of his abilities. And my kids really do like it.

3 out of 5 stars If I were you, I would stick with the hymns.......2001-02-22

Essentially, what we have here is a CD of songs that typify a certain lifestyle of the rural south in the early twentieth century. (I did not want to be so rude as to say hicks.)While I am basically a part of the region, I am not in love with the music of the era. If you are, more power to you. I am probably overshooting my dislike for this general style of the music because I love to hear Ford's powerful, magnificent voice sing the many hymn standards that he recorded. As it is, though, I feel that this CD is inferior to what he was capable of recording and, quite frequently, did record with his version of many hymns.

5 out of 5 stars There when I needed it........2006-02-25

My mother was dying in a hospice. We needed some music to play for her while she was there. Two of her favorite hymns were on the one cd. It was hard to find that. Amazon came through with the selection, and overnited it to me. My mother passed 2 days later. I'll always be grateful for that cd.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns.......2005-07-28

Tennessee Ernie Ford was a very popular singer when I was a child and my parents and siblings loved to watch his TV show. He would always end the show with a hymn and I wanted to revisit those songs and the happy days of my youth. The Hymns and Ernie are as good as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2004-11-23

I bought this CD specifically for the song "My Faith Looks Up To Thee" which is hard to find on a CD. This hymn was written in 1830 by Ray Palmer (lyrics) and put to music later by Lowell Mason, a man Palmer met on the streets of Boston. Mason took home the lyric, wrote a melody, and a few days later found Palmer and told him no matter what Palmer did for the rest of his life, he would be remembered for the hymn.

Another gem here is "Just As I Am Without One Plea." This is the amazing story of Charlotte Elliot. This bedridden, sick woman was feeling sorry she could not help her pastor with his fundraising for charity as she was simply too sick. After writing this hymn in 1835, she was shocked to find copies of it being sold by the thousands. The proceeds were given to the very charity Charlotte thought she could not help. After she died in 1871, others found stacks of letters sent to her from all over the world, thanking her for changing their lives and bringing them to Christ.

These are not the only two historical hymns in collection.

This is not just a CD of the great hymns of our time. This CD is a living history of hymns going far back in time.

It is a treasure.

I am thankful I got a chance to see Tennessee Ernie Ford when he appeared on TV during his glory years.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect.......2003-10-29

The 1st CD of Mr. Ford's that I purchased was entitled Amazing Grace: 40 Treasured Hymns -- a year later and I still frequently pop that magnificent collection of hymns into the drive. I HAD to have more -- so I purchased 2 other Ernie hymn CDs (including this one) -- and these certainly do not disappoint. While these CDs are comprised of age-old favorite hymns, Mr. Ford's unique, flawless bass voice gives them added life. Blend Mr. Ford's pure, non-pretentious bass voice with a judicious mixture of crisp alto's and tenor's, as some of the selections do, and you are presented with truly, magnificent works of art that seem to never get old. Just drop the CD into the drive, sit back, relax, and let Mr. Ford sing you back home with this soothing collection of favorite hymns.

5 out of 5 stars Give me that old time religion!.......2003-05-10

I set out to find a CD that contained the old hymns that I loved as a child, which have now seemed to have disappeared from the churches in my area. But, I also wanted hymns that I could sing along with. Well, with this CD I hit pay dirt!

This CD is a compilation of twenty-two of Tennessee Ernie Ford's (1919-91) most requested hymns. Sung with Ford's wonderful voice, the hymns are great to listen to. And more, I found that I could happily sing along with all but a couple which were sung a little to idiosyncratically for me (What a Friend We Have in Jesus is one, sadly).

So, if you want to hear some of those wonderful old hymns again, then I can't recommend this CD enough. I have it in the CD player in my car, and it is not coming out soon!

4 out of 5 stars Great voice........2006-04-04

He has great voice, fine songs.
"Sixteen tons" is highlight.
Good compilation,good booklet.

2 out of 5 stars At least it's got "16 Tons".......2004-03-15

I didn't know much about Tennessee Ernie Ford, besides "16 Tons," but figured that alone was enough to give this CD a chance. It is a good value, and has a nice mix of songs. Unfortunately, I must say very few besides "16 Tons" interested me. By and large, the songs are overly produced, and lack soul. Ford has a great voice, and a few other songs are worth listening (like "Milk 'em in the Morning Blues"). The album does what it claims to do, give you an inclusive collection of Ford's output, and if you like Ford, it probably won't dissapoint. But this CD left me cold.

5 out of 5 stars Great from beginning to end!.......1999-11-20

I always loved "Sixteen Tons", but I never knew any of Tennessee Ernie Ford's other songs. This collection, which is in chronological order, was terrific from beginnning to end, with lots of singable songs and excellent recording quality. Some of my favorites were "Milk 'em in the Morning Blues", "Country Junction", "I'll Never Be Free", "Hey Mr. Cotton-Picker" and, of course, "Sixteen Tons", but most of the other songs are very good, also. This CD is also a great value -- lots of songs for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than I remembered it!.......2006-01-16

This music was released in July of 1961, a few months after I was born. My mother, who could give Melanie Wilkes a run for her money in her undying love of The Cause, had _Songs of the South_ and, as soon as I learned to use the record player, I was listening to these awesome songs over and over.

Now that I'm a grownup, I started thinking: I wonder how this album matches up to my recollections. What a treat to find that it was still available, and now on CD! Here's why I give it five stars:

1. Ford's powerful and versatile baritone, which brings the songs, whether tragic, martial or humourous, to life. He is backed by an unobtrusive male chorus which does not distract from the lead singer. I am so sorry that, although Amazon provided a list of the songs, it did not also allow you to hear some of them. One listen and you would want this collection for yourself.

2. The authentic-sounding instrumentation. You are hearing everything from trumpets to fifes to harmonicas to zithers, with lots of fancy drumwork where appropriate. And the arrangements are not trying to be innovative, which, in this case, is a good thing. I am sure that the arrangements are more sophisticated than they would have been in the period, but they are very enjoyable, all the same.

3. You can really sing along to these things! Yep, you just won't be able to help yourself. And the 64-page booklet enclosed will help you out with that. It has all the words and also (in italics) additional verses which TEF does not use. (And, as a Virginian, here's my one big peeve with this recording: in "Bonny Blue Flag," TEF leaves out the Virginia verse!)

4. The 64-page booklet that comes with the CD. Thanks to whoever came up with this! You get the song lyrics (as well as the writers of the words and music) and some helpful background text about the songs. (I enjoyed seeing how many of the tunes were derived from those of earlier folk ballads.) There is also appropriate and interesting period photography scattered throughout the booklet.

To conclude: it's a great album and will afford you much listening pleasure!

5 out of 5 stars Songs of the Rebellion.......2005-10-12

I borrowed a copy of this album on 33-1/3 over 20 years ago and had a copy of it made on tape. The tape decided to break about five years ago and I was pleased to find out that I could get the album on CD. It is very pleasent to enjoy the songs and Ernie once again.

5 out of 5 stars Great One.......2005-05-11

I am thrilled that these "War between the States" songs are on a CD. I bought Songs of the South over 30 yrs ago on a 33 1/3 record. I love this album. Glad that Songs of the North were added to this CD.Ole Ernie's recordings still sound good.Civil War fans will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars Ford is easily one of the greatest hymn singers of all time.......2001-02-23

This CD by Tennessee Ernie Ford is, like every hymn record he made, exceptional. From the title track, "How Great Thou Art" to the powerful "Take my Hand, Precious Lord" to "The Old Rugged Cross," Ford's brilliance at singing the greatest of hymn standards.

4 out of 5 stars Same Story.......2001-08-25

Over all, not bad. But it doesn't compete with the Gaither's 40 Treasured Hymns. With only a few songs, it ends quickly as it begins.

5 out of 5 stars Ten terrific tracks.......2001-08-25

If you are familiar with the gospel recordings of Ernie Ford, you are probably as glad for them as I. On this CD, he sings the traditional hymns that many know so well. In my opinion, the very best songs from this disc are "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," and "In The Garden." Any of Tennessee Ernie Ford's hymn CDs would be wonderful to have, and this one is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of Westerns Past.......2006-11-07

This is a great recording which contains at least five of TEF's best western songs.

I've always love western music. My favorites are Marty Robbins, Frankie Laine, TEF, and Tex Ritter.

1 out of 5 stars Tennessee Ernie Ford early hits.......2006-07-08

It does not even sound like Ford and the socalled hits I never heard before and I am old enough to have heard all his hits.

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs.......2005-02-02

Lovely Cd.Excellent songs.Shame it does not have The watermelon song/one suit.Got hold of these songs recently. The watermelon song especially is excellent. VK Oxford UK
