The band's gently mournful economy of style is adorned by a cinematic breadth of instrumentation and by arrangements of rich depth. "Misery..." is a creative leap forward from their last album, "Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons".

4 out of 5 stars Swirling Sounds in a Hurricane of Noise with Blonde Redhead's Best Work to date.......2007-06-21

Blonde Redhead is a name Kazu Makino, Maki Takahashi and Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace came up with supporting New York No wave bands.
Blonde Redhead uses alternative tunings and wall-wall guitar blasts much to the tune of Sonic Youth, but with this release Bonde Redhead has created a sound that is all their own. You won't hear these mix of keyboards, swirling guitars, and precise drumming anywhere else. Especially adding Kazu's and Amadeo's fractured spectral harmonies. Kazu's vocals takes you on a journey with her high soprano and desperte shrieks. Pure glorious beauty.
Amadeo Pace's voice balances out 'Misery Is A Butterfly' as a noble tenor, adding nice variety. I don't mind it as much when he sings with Kazu, but I don't care as much when he sings songs on his own. The 10th track "Pink Love" is a Wonderful song and a Good balance of both singers' voices.
'Misery Is A Butterfly' is Blonde Redhead's fifth album and their first on label 4AD released in 2004.
It took longer for this band to put this album together(Kazu had a accident) - but what I have heard from BR - this is their Best work to date, even compared to their newest release in 2007 "23"-
This one here is full of charm with it's wonderful strings, gorgeous instrumental flourishes and keyboards.
Blonde Redhead has found their true sound with 'Misery Is A Butterfly' - Darkly romantic and atmospheric, a kind of sadness in some ways.
If you are new to Blonde Redhead I suggest getting this one first. It is better then earlier 90s releases of theirs.
-Favorite track- the closer "Equus" - A burst of joyful disstressed energy from Kazu. Simply Brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars Someone Please tell Amedeo not to sing!.......2007-03-30

This could have been an absolutely AMAZING album. Unfortunately, it is
not. Blonde redhead is one of those bands where the vocal duties are shared. In this case, it is between Amedeo Pace (voice, words, guitar, baritone guitar) and Kazu Makino (voice, words, clavinet, guitar). Each of these individuals have very unique voices and a tendency for atonal, off-key lamenting. Kazu voice is unique and interesting in a way that seems that transcend its inherent limitations. Amedeo's voice, on the other hand, is just plain awful. It sounds like some random idiot singing in the shower- the voice of someone who thinks they can sing but cannot. It is nasaly, whiny, completely off-key (flat) and utterly irritating. If anyone thinks differently, they have let too many positive reveiws skew their perception of his flawed singing. This is a shame because this completely obliterates the otherwise fantastic instrumentation on the songs in which he sings. It is like listening to a beautiful melody with the teakettle whisting in the foreground - it isn't cool, artsy, or edgy...it is just ridiculously annoying. It almost sounds as though he is deliberately trying to sound as bad as possible. Contrary to what many of you hipsters may think, it is not cool, sexy, avant-garde, mysterious, or in any way interesting to sing like a tone-deaf wounded animal.

Let's review:
The instrumentation- very complex and beautiful.
Kazu's vocals- unique and somewhat atonal but very ethereal and complimentary to the instrumentation.
Amedeo's vocals- unique... as in uniquely bad. His voice greatly detracts from what would otherwise be a truly amazing record.

I truly hope that someone will eventually tell Amedeo that he cannot sing and that his vocals DESROY otherwise beautiful songs. Please let Kazu handle all of the vocal duties from now on. It is the attributes of her voice and the instrumentation that sell records.

5 out of 5 stars "Misery" is a post rock gem........2006-11-21

I first heard "Elephant Woman" on the film "Hard Candy." The melody and dreamy voice haunted me for days. I decided to pick up this album for that song alone. I am so glad that I did that for the rest of "Misery" is just as superlative. BR sounds like Sonic Youth doing Trip-Hop.

4 out of 5 stars Better Every Time........2006-09-01

As I've been buying Blonde Redhead records since their self-titled LP came out, I almost negected to listen to "Misery is a Butterfly" out of pretentious, pre-emptive boredom.

I have to admit: This is an incredible record. The first time I heard it, I was turned off by how massive and polished it sounded compared to their prior records. As a big fan of "Fake Can Be Just As Good" this is not what I ussually look for in a Blonde Redhead Album. This is a massive, solid and majestic record that easily creates its own universe.

One of the concerns that I've heard is that each song captures a particular mood so perfectly, that after a while, all of the songs can begin to meld, and the whole album may begin to feel like one really long song.

Don't worry though, whenever you're in the mood to listen to this record, it will probably be because of it's abillity to maintain a dark, dreamy and romanticzed vibe for 40 minutes straight; not in spite of it.

"Misery", like "Damaged Lemons" before it, finds the band becoming more and more interested in straighter pop, more traditional songwriting, and smoother arrangements. In this vein, "Misery is a Butterfly" is a much greater success.

I don't know what misguided A&R stooge picked "Equus" as a single. Any other song would have provided a more honest glimpse of what the record is all about. It is the one occasion on "Misery" where the band seems insincere. It appears that they made a misguided effort to be "current" and conform to the pseudo-'hipster' conventions that have been established by artists that they've influenced themselves.

Although they're plauged by some small degree of inconsistency, Blonde Redhead are sure to continue releasing some of the most timeless music available today.

4 out of 5 stars it's a good one.......2006-07-29

Do you really need another person to tell you how great this album is? Probably not. You should definitely pick this up. The songs have plenty of minor key goodness, with cool beats, and; this one is a big selling point for me, they don't sound like anyone else. The only reason this fell short of a 5 is that a couple of songs with the guy singing are stinkers, but this definitely does not detract too much from the overall worth of the album.

If you are into female vocally type acts (there's two singers here, but the girl is better), this will be a refreshing change, and you'll probably like it alot.

5 out of 5 stars Sick and tender........2006-10-25

Beautiful little songs baste roughly on a book by the great French writer Genet.

Sad but immoral seaside tales about disease, prostitution and the meaningless life (and death) of sailors and fishermen. NOT for the squeamish. This CD deals with VD, rape and many other questionable things.

Expect lots of bad language and shocking lyrics ... But still the songs are melodic, tender and thought provoking. A strong contrast between the lyrics and music makes it very entertaining and strangly beautiful.

I especially like "King Neptune"; it's about a 60 year old sailor who tells tall tales about mermaids, far off seas and the many prostitutes he's slept with.

If you don't know of the Tiger Lillies. This isn't a bad place to start. A masterpiece in modern Cabaret.

If you are looking for one of their "cleaner" albums try; "A Gorey End" or "Shockheaded Peter". If you want something a little more fun try; Ad Nauseum. But saying that, I think this is one of their best.

If you've ever allowed your heart to stay present in a relationship all the way through to its inevitable but unwanted poor final outcome, you will probably be able to relate. I'll admit that a lot of these songs made me feel some kind of way. But it's a good thing, especially if you need a good cry. Not the same ol' same ol'. It's nice to hear these grooves again, especially Syreeta, Jermaine, and AWB.

4 out of 5 stars Production is lacking.......2007-06-13

The songwriting, lyrics, new vocalist, instrumentals, EVERYTHING on this album is amazing. Too bad they didn't have Devin Townsend as a producer again. Of Malice & the Magnum Heart is still probably the best sounding album i've ever heard, ever.

5 out of 5 stars you will not find a more passionate and heavy album.......2007-01-11

this cd is insane. if you like of malice and the magnum heart (misery signals previous disk) you'll love this cd. the melodic parts are more melodic and the heavy parts are heavier. the guitar parts have gotten way more technical as well, but not in a way that makes you not appreiciate the technicality of the record because it's over done, but in a way that just makes every single song memorable, much like malce but more so. the new vocalist isn't as good in my opinion (he's not as raspy and the vocals just aren't as powerful without all the layering) but he's still really good and he still gets me pumped, except for when he does this stupid like whispering thing, where the old vocalist would do the tough guy talking thing this guy whispers and it sounds retarded. this cd is great if you're already a fan if you're just getting into misery signals i suggest buying Of Malice and the Magnum Heart. some stand out tracks are sword of eyes, anchor, and something was always missing but it was never you.

5 out of 5 stars Great metalcore - amazing instrumental skill.......2006-12-31

This is my first sampling from Misery Signals, and I have to say that Mirrors has blown me away.

At first listen, I decided that buying the CD was an okay venture, since the music seemed to be solid enough. After a few more listens, I was committed. The musicians in this band are truly amazing, and have a great sound. The run-of-the-mill vocals were somewhat of a turn-off for me, but its simple to look past them to the true music. Don't get me wrong; the vocals are great if you're into the whole screaming thing. But personally, I got hooked on metalcore because of the music, and not the screaming. I was not disappointed. After owning the CD for a week now, some of my favorites include "Sword of Eyes," "Anchor," and "Mirrors." The two headlining tracks are great too ("The Failsafe," "One Day I'll Stay Home"), and (slightly) more radio-friendly.

All in all, this is one of those rare CD's that you can listen to straight through. Every song has its good attributes.

Definitely pick it up if you're a fan of the more melodic side of metalcore!

5 out of 5 stars Brutal, yet melodic.......2006-10-27

As it's been mentioned by other reviewers, this is an amazing album. I don't even remember how I stumbled onto Misery Signals, but I'm very glad I did. The best way I can describe this band is to say that they mix hardcore vocals (without cheesy HC lyrics), complex heavy, yet melodic riffs, and pummeling DB drumming to produce a progressive, Hopesfall meets hardcore type sound. Actually, the slight similarity to old Hopesfall is what really attracted me. The best part about Misery Signals is that they cannot be easily compared to anyone else!

If you're looking for something crushing, monstrous, yet simultaneously beautiful, pick this CD up. It's a breath of fresh air amongst other bands in the stagnating metalcore scene.

"One Day I'll Stay Home" and "The Failsafe" are worth the price of the CD alone. Amazing songs.

    4 out of 5 stars Face Yourself........2006-09-27

This is another outstanding album from a band that contineus to rise above the mold in a genre now bland with routine and formulaic bands that rely on simplicity to make it. Misery Signals is most noted for their ambient yet crushing, atmospheric yet brutal sound which they further refine on 'Mirrors'. The guitars play off each other and hardly ever strum any normal power chords. It's all a combination of beautiful harmonies and picking with a tight low end in the bass.

Now it's to noted that this album is different from the first, 'Of Malice & The Magnum Heart' which is an amazing album as well. Gone are the punchy sounding drums and the prevalent bass lines. They have a new singer, whose voice is like a wall of soun. He also speaks a lot of the lyrics which is how Jesse Zaraska (the old singer) used to do it. But the overdubbed vocals are gone leaving a more aggressive sound. It works well here. Here is a track-by-track review:

1.Face Yourself - unlike the previous MS album, this song just hits you in the face with Carl Schubach's monstrous screaming and chugging guitars.Whereas the old album built you up to the opener with an intro track, this song just plain massacres with its breakdowns. Bear in mind that a MS breakdown is unlike anything you've ever heard with hard to hit time signatures and odd strum patterns. Fantastic ending. 5/5

2.The Failsafe - The first single and video. This song is amazing and the drums stand out masively. It is crushing yet very very melodic with it's clean passages which is what MS does best. The spoken words leading up to the insanely heavy breakdown are perfect. 5/5

3.Post Collapse - me and my friend call this song 'beefy'...and it is. It is probably the heaviest song on the album. Like Face Yourself, it slams you with it's crushing riffs. An awesome song. 5/5

    4. Migrate - A very short soft song. Something diff but recognizably MS's style. The spoken words are intense. A welcome respite after the previous song's onslaught. 5/5

    5. One Day I'll Stay Home - this song blows my mind. A sweet intro with weird timing, it is relatively soft. This song still retains it's power, though. The best part about this song is Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump's guest vocals on the chorus. Different yet it fits so well. Who would've thought? 5/5

    6. Something Was Always Missing But It Was Never You - probably the best intro to any hardcore song ever. It is heavy and pretty yet again and the timing gets me very time. The only noticeable bass riff is in thi song and it rips. 5/5

    7. Reverence Lost - the worst song on the album, but by NO means is it bad. The drums just take off in the beginning. This is a really melocid song but ends on a heavy note. 4/5

    8. Sword of Eyes - an sweet song. The intro is kind of haunting and the length is pretty long. It has some awesome riffs and a breakdown that makes me wanna shout every time. There is also a part where everything but the drums and vocals stop...ahhh...so good...5/5

    9. An Offering To The Insatiable Sons Of God (Butcher) - not sure about the name. Kinda slow in the beginning and the lyrics are really simple. Nothing amazing...it is sorta mellow. 4/5

    10. Anchor - Oh man, the single greatest riff I've ever heard is in the intro to this song. I love it. When I heard it I was like "holy crap!" This song is shorter than the rest besides Migrate as well. The breakdown where Schubach yells "This attempt has failed!" is the most forceful on the album. Love it. Ah, the riff. 5/5.

    11. Mirrora - I'm still getting used to this song. It is the longest and the most epic on the album. All sorts of things going on here and the lyrics are really good as well. A perfect way to end a masterpiece. 5/5

All in all, a breath of fresh air in a stagnant scene. Go buy it now.

    Like now.

    5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Update..........2007-05-24

It's no secret that "Two Penny Opera," by The Tiger Lillies, is based on Kurt Weill's "Die Dreigroschenoper" (Threepenny Opera). However, this is not simply a strict translation dressed up in modern rags. Instead, Martyn Jaucques and co. bring the tale of Mackie into the modern age by looking back. A fine example is the stunning opener "Moon Over Soho," whic is a startling rendition of the famed "Mack the Knife" piece. Instead of translating it line for line, The Tiger Lillies strip down the strucure and give it a complete makeover, so much that those already familiar with the original song may not immediately recognize it at first. This is followed by four of what may be some of the finest pieces in the Tiger Lillies canon. "Piss On Your Grave" especially, is a hilarious track that is presented form the viewpoint of Mackie, as he details the various iconic figures that he has murdered "in exactly the same way." Later in the album, the Tiger Lillies present an inspired cover of "Twenty-Five Minutes," to both comic and horrifying effect.

This album is not for the faint of heat, nor is for the easily offended. However, this IS both a brilliant restructuring of "Die Dreigroschenoper" and a beautiful, hilarious and horrifying work of high art.

Hailing from Baltimore, MD, Misery Index evolved out of Dying Fetus, featuring founding member Jason Netherton and Sparky Voyles. The line-up is completed by drummer Matt Byers, who replaced former Dying Fetus drummer Kevin Talley. First full length, features 11 tracks. Nuclear Blast. 2003.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Discordia..........2007-07-07

and whoever compares this to Dying Fetus has obviously not listened to either band extensively.

This album kicks a** nonetheless and its not just cause Kevin Talley from Dying Fetus is in it. I think if we had to blame someone for such sweet music we'd have to direct it at Jason.

Jason Netherton rocks the boat. Go support Misery Index.

5 out of 5 stars The best debut you probably haven't heard.......2006-06-07

For those that do not know, Misery Index are a Maryland/Washington D.C. based death metal band with strong hard and grindcore influences. If you have heard of this band, it's probably because drummer Kevin Talley is the former skinsman for Dying Fetus. But, even though both bands play death metal which is equally brutal and technical, Misery Index are no Dying Fetus Junior. This band is a lot less groove oriented and politically motivated. Talley and the gang also get by without as many breakdowns as that band because MI are always/consistently heavy. There are absolutely no slow tempo changes or melodic guitar lines on their debut album, 2003's "Retaliate," so the music is never allowed to breathe. The only times the onslaught relents is during the few, brief seconds when one track has ended and the proceeding song hasn't yet begun.

Talley pummels away at his skins, creating complex, walloping blast beat bonanzas while guitarists Sparky Voyles and Bruce Greig (who would leave the band in 2004) lay down an uncountable number of crushing, mosh pit ready riffs. And vocalist/bassist Jason Netherton's commanding, arresting voice barks out mean, ugly lyrics like "the razor blade infections cut caverns deep across my skin." Lastly, this record also boasts great production, because the instruments and the rhythms sound very crisp and articulate. The end result is a disc which is composed of eleven awesome, impenetrable, walloping, skull-crushing, dissonant, punishing, satisfying songs which plow straight ahead, steamrolling over everything in sight and shredding the listener's speakers.

Songs like "The Great Depression," "Angst Isst Die Seele Auf," and "Servants Of Progress" interlock cracking, machine gun, almost mind boggling drum beats with lumbering power chords, and, likewise, the album opening title track features both huge, pounding power chords and excellent double bass drumming. The fifth track, "Demand The Impossible," might be the record's best song. It augments churning riffs (which are thick enough to wipe out a whole city) with a catchy, slamming, jackhammer blast beat.

Misery Index deserve to (and are probably going to) be huge. So, if you're a metalhead and you haven't already checked this band out, you owe it to yourself to do so. "Retaliate" (and MI's sophomore album, "Discordia") are essential purchases for everybody who is a fan of death metal and grindcore, and all neck snappers in general.

4 out of 5 stars Tons of energy here.......2005-05-25

Retaliate" starts unpromisingly with some generic chugging riffing. But after a minute comes a dive-bombing solo straight out of Slayer, and the album is off to the races. The title track alone goes through death, grind, and straight-up thrash in whiplash fashion. The rest of the album mixes up these influences, keeping things brutal and varied, if not exactly groundbreaking. The surprisingly thoughtful lyrics alternate between misanthropic and abstract.

1 out of 5 stars You people are kidding, right?.......2004-11-09

Misery Index is like Dying Fetus without the catchy pit riffs, without the breakdowns, without the groove, and without the growl.

And that's a good thing because...?

    5 out of 5 stars More then what i could've asked for..........2004-03-20

I had just stepped in my friends house when he blasts "the lies that binds" quickly i wonder who the f*ck is that ? Then he told me about misery index!Okay, i was very impressed & happy with their sound & the vocals are the main thing i always look for & misery index's vocalist did do his job correctly... With nothing here being mediocre or weak at all! I recommend this for fans of dyingfetus, godforbid, messhuga, & ,burnt by the sun--don't wait...Just, buy it!

This one here, has to grow on you. when you listen to it, it does sound like a 3 stars album but actually a 4, so there you have it.

5 out of 5 stars Album So Dope They Ship It In Bags.......2007-04-05

I became an instant fan of Louis Logic when I first heard "Freak Show" on an underground rap internet station. His wit, wordplay, and flow nearly blew me away. I knew I had to check out "Sin-A-Matic", his debut album. I came to find that the 20 bucks I spent on his first album was money well spent. Needless to say I didn't hesitate at all to check out his sophomore album, "Misery Loves Comedy", which dropped mid 2006. If I was to be perfectly honest, I didn't dig this one as much as I dug the first album. It's actually been sitting in my CD case untouched for the past 4-5 months now. Just a couple of weeks ago I was looking for something fresh to listen to and ended up pulling "Misery Loves Comedy" out to give it a spin. Now that I've listened to it in its entirety about 3 times now, I have a new appreciation for the record.

Now I can't even remember why I wasn't so impressed with it. His flow is unbeatable, I'm telling you this cat can rap. The beats by JJ Brown are top-notch and compliment Lou's flow well. The samples this guy uses are crazy. Louis's flow on every track is almost mezmerizing; he doesn't sound like he's running out of breath and he never gets off beat. He shows his ability to rhyme and rhyme well on tracks like "Classy McNasty", "New Leaf", "Rule By a Fool", and "Caption Lou El Wino". There are a lot of tracks dealing with women, sex, and relationships, both serious and comical. "The Line" is a cut about how friends check out each others' girlfriends and get jealous over it. "Beginner's Lust" has Lou giving "lessons on lust for beginners". "The Withdrawal Method" is about friends who try to be more but keep messing things up. "The Great Divide" is a cut almost anyone can relate to, about trying to get her to notice you but you're too cowardly to make the first move. There's a bonus cut, which is kind of a different version of this song, with a guitar as Lou's instrument. It's just as good as the rap original. "Morning After Pill" is a funny track that has Lou wishing there was a cure for his hangover whenever he spent nights getting wasted. "All Girls Cheat" is about exactly what the title says.

There's one song on the album that doesn't entirely fit with the rest, but that's not a bad thing at all, in this case. "A Perfect Circle" blew me away from the very first listen. It's a concept track (a story) that can play with your emotions. Lou tells a tale from the eyes of a 32 year old man who has been a loner of sorts his whole life. Needless to say, he's not very good with women. Dialing old random numbers, he dials the number of a woman who is kind of in the same boat that he's in. She stuns him from the first call, leavng him speechless (literally). He keeps calling back, disguising his voice to get to know her better. Then, he decides talking on the phone isn't enough, so he watches her house. The story turns tragic, but all the pieces come together at the end. The beat, amazing all by itself, really brings out the emotion of the track. The song is so good it deserved it's own paragraph, so that should tell you something.

If you were a fan of his first album, then you should have no doubts about picking this up. It may have to grow on you, but you'll be glad, like me, that you did in the long run. Logic is destined to be an underground legend, if he keeps dropping albums of this caliber. And if JJ Brown stays behind the boards for him, I only see good things happening in the future. The album is rather hard to find but do what you have to do to get it because it's well worth it. 5 Stars.

4 out of 5 stars Comedy loves company?.......2006-12-11

I've only recently been exposed to Louis Logic. I'd remember seeing his name listed as a guest on DOOM's classic Vaudeville Villain, released under his alias of Viktor Vaughn, but the track(Open Mic Nite, Pt. 1) was more of a skit than an actual song. I didn't think much of Louis from this short interlude, until a friend has recommended this release to me. Upon further investegation of Louis Logic, he was once a member of the Demigodz collective, and has ties to likes of Apathy and Celf-Titled. However, his style is far removed from Apathy's visceral battle rhymes.

If you've never heard Louis before, his flow is actually quite reminiscient of early-Eminem, despite the fact that Logic is a brother. His steez could be attributed to his upbringing, but personally, no matter how awkward his voice maybe, his flow is refined, and his timing is usually correct. Good breath control, and decent swagger add up to an above-average emcee; however, where Louis Logic really succeeds is lyrically, and conceptually.

Louis makes a lot of 'love-songs,' but they neither border the misogony line of G-Unit, nor follow the watered-down, overly sweet LL Cool J formula. Louis keeps things real with his stories, and while some people may be initially put off by an album that relates to real-life stories(face it, most of today's hip-hop listeners want surreal coke and trigger tales), Louis manages to keep reality on wax exactly what it's intended to be; interesting.

His producer, JJ Brown, also supplies over a dozen hot beats on this album. In fact, while Louis is talented, Brown maybe a better producer than Louis is an emcee, and I'd like to see him expand in the underground, offering his work to other emcees while still keeping his close connection to Louis Logic. His soul-sampled records are just as intriguing as the likes of 9th Wonder and Kanye West's, and upon listening to this album, you realize how underrated Brown is in the hip-hop game.

Louis Logic is a nice emcee, and JJ Brown is a phenomenal producer. Together, they release a concept album definitely work checking out. Whether you've followed either cat before or not is unimportant; you should feel Misery Loves Comedy.

4 out of 5 stars I Only Herd Of This Cat Once...... But Its Pretty Dope .......2006-07-28

It started whith me walking to the cd store, i did not whant to leave with nothing. I herd of this dude called Louis Logic on a Doom song, so i bought Misery Loves Comedy. I did not like it at all the first time i listen to it, i was like "this is wack". It was on the 3erd listen to I thoght this guy is deep, more mature then your averag rapper. A Perfect Circle tells this smart beutifull love song that end in tragedy[im not going to tell you the ending]. He is not afraid of being emotional or telling a story no matter how awkward it sounds. The beat to the opening track new leaf is steller and louis is real lyrical on all tracks. But its not perfict like the borderline corny songs like The Line,Beginner Lust, and All Girls Cheat. On the album he says he is drunk on love songs. I think Louis Logic needs to visit detox before he makes another album.

      4 out of 5 stars damn, I wish I could give it 4 1/2.......2006-07-21

this will drag the overall rating down to 4 stars, but damn, I just can't give it 5. RRRRR!
Louis's second effort, much more mature than the first, and you might not LOVE it at first listen, and even I thought it was slightly dissapointing, but after the 3rd listen or so, you'll come to appreciate this much more than his first, and to a more mature listener, will be almost timeless.
His singing might be an aquired taste for some, but I've grown to love it, some of the songs are so deep, and the production hits on more levels...
the lyrics are once again amazing, but he's on another level now...

he might not be a guilty pleasure anymore, but he's still a pleasure...

      peace,

      5 out of 5 stars A gem of 90's jangle-pop.......2004-04-05

"Finding out the truth about you was finding the moon is made of dust/ The stars are just confetti, and heroes always fall from the bedroom wall." -- Moon of Dust

Following their infectious & cartoony debut "Let It Bee" and the polished (if less bracing) follow-up "Honey Lingers," the Beehive's bubble burst. Leaders Tracey Bryn and Melissa Belland endured a series of personal & professional blows that broke their hearts and estranged them from their bandmates. Bereft of inspiration, the sisters finally met with veteran producer Pete Vettese who challenged them to get up, wipe away the tears, and channel their lost innocence back into music. And thus did the Beehive sisters rediscover their "voice" and create their masterpiece -- a jangle-pop album of 11 highly personal songs conveying humor, hurt and hope via soaring melodies, radiant harmonies and gorgeous pop production. The Beehive's poppy, funny, alterna-chick sensibility is front & center, but there's also an aching maturity to their observations of love & sex, joy & misery. These lovingly imperfect gals bare their souls. The music alternates between delicate & raucous, with strings & keyboards giving way to booming drums and crunchy guitars, sometimes in the same song. And each one sports lyrics so smart, big-hearted and on-target, you'll think they're telling YOUR story -- whether it's one of lost love, self-discovery, domestic abuse, closeted sexuality, heartbreak & hope, survival & starting over. Luckily, the lyrics are included.

Alternately tearful & defiant, bittersweet & euphoric, "Sex & Misery" is one of the frothiest works in the 90's new-wave catalog. A delightful slice of overlooked pop music. Girl-Beatle enthusiasts should take note.

"Well I knew that it would end but I would do the same again/ I just wanted the feeling of you and me, to keep for a memory/ Your secret's safe with me." -- Heavenly

      2 out of 5 stars Well...it's different..........2002-04-24

I have been a VOTB fan for many years, dating back to their first release in the late-80s, "Let It Bee," which was one of the first CDs I ever purchased. "Sex & Misery" definitely veers away from the catchy guitars-and-drums sound found on earlier releases, which for me was a disappointment. This album uses a larger variety of musical instruments and feels much more like adult contemporary rock, or even Christian rock, than the alternative flavor of their earlier work. The foot-tapping beats are missing, the melodies feel muted and uncompelling (even absent in a couple songs), and the whole of the CD simply lacks luster. The Belland sisters still show an aptitude for writing lyrics that are clever and thought out. If you've never purchased a VOTB album, and you prefer mainstream rock, this CD might be for you. If you already have other VOTB music in your collection...well, just be prepared for something different.

5 out of 5 stars Gone but not forgotten.......2001-12-11

Well, Voice of the Beehive no longer exist as their record label did not do such a spectacular job promoting this album. I have a very eclectic mix of music from classical, jazz, country, pop, and so forth. This "indie" album is one of the shining jewels in it. I would encourage you to purchase this album as it has a fresh sound to it and the mystery of a band that is not so well known.

      2 out of 5 stars A Huge Misstep.......2001-09-23

After the glorious pop masterpiece that was VOTB's second album HONEY LINGERS, the Belland sisters returned(minus their original band)with SEX & MISERY--unfortunately the second part of that title is more tell-tale than one might initially suspect. The liner notes themselves begin with Melissa Belland offering up a hint as to the emotional place the girls found themselves in following HONEY LINGERS and leading up to this resulting third album. Unfortunately, MISERY does play a huge part here--at least for the listener. The bright, melodic tunes that permeated their first two albums are all but absent here--only 'Scary Kisses' and 'New Day' conjure up the wit and charm that mark the Bellands' best songs. Songs like 'I'm Still In Love' and 'Love Locked Inside' appear as though the corporate rock gods got their hands on the group in the interim of the two albums, with utterly mundane and mediocre results. Which is the saddest thing of all--the old VOTB was NEVER in a million years mundane or mediocre. With this record, they've suffered the worst of all fates--they've become ordinary.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad pop.......2001-05-25

I bought this CD back in 1995 along with Garbage's first album, when both groups had a single on the air. For VOTB, it was "Scary Kisses." I would say that the album itself isn't bad for pop music, and in fact it typifies it: a few songs are very good, most are okay, and a few are hmmmmmm.... For me, my favorite is "Scary Kisses" followed closely by "New Day." The rest of the songs are decent, but from the second song, the album changes tune, so to speak; the first two are pop radio material, and the rest are reserved for tough VOTB fans. I must admit that I preferred the Garbage CD to this one, although I most certainly dig it out often enough. So, buy it if you like 'em, pass it up if you don't.
