Nothing changes folks like babies and war, and since the release of their last album, 2002's Home, the Dixie Chicks have been forever altered by both. If that album showcased the trio as precocious young adults, Taking the Long Way finds them sobered and matured, and in a grown-up state of mind. Produced by the celebrated Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers), who saw the Chicks as "a great rock act making a country album, not a country act making a rock album," their new record impresses both as beautiful sonic tapestry (peppered with myriad Beatlesque hallmarks) and forthright yet vulnerable portrait of three women shaken by the personal and political events of the past few years. As they make clear in the defiant "Not Ready to Make Nice," they still smart over the backlash from their 2003 Bushwhacking. But as they assert on the equally autobiographical "The Long Way Around," they could never "kiss all the asses that they told me to" and just follow others aimlessly--and silently--through life. This means that the Chicks are simultaneously prideful and scornful of celebrity ("Everybody Knows"), and that as new mothers they increasingly treasure the refuge they find in life with their families, out of the spotlight ("Easy Silence," "Lullaby," "Baby Hold On"). The push and pull of both passions drive this record, which also touches on the personal issues of infertility (with which sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison both dealt) and Alzheimer's (from which Natalie Maines's grandmother suffers). The trio crafted all 14 cuts with the help of such writers as Sheryl Crow, Gary Louris, Mike Campbell, and Keb' Mo', laying out their lives as honestly and intimately as they might in their diaries. For that reason, on first listen, Taking the Long Way seems too somber--in need of a bit of levity and more than a couple of uptempo songs (like the sexy, '60s-flavored "I Like It") to resonate for the long haul. It also seems to lack the writing quality that Darrell Scott, Patty Griffin, and Bruce Robison brought to Home. But on repeated plays, those concerns dissipate. By the last cut, the R&B/gospel offering "I Hope," the Chicks have chronicled their journey with as much spirituality as spunk, their pain deeply ingrained in their protests. --Alanna Nash

Description

With Taking The Long Way, one of the most anticipated albums in recent years, the Dixie Chicks are putting themselves out there like never before. For the first time, every one of the disc's fourteen songs are co-written by the Chicks themselves, exploring themes both deeply private and resoundingly political. Collaborating with legendary producer Rick Rubin (who has worked with everyone from Johnny Cash to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, from Run DMC to Neil Diamond), the biggest-selling female band in history has truly pushed themselves to new heights both as writers and as performers.

"Everything felt more personal this time," says Maines. "I go back to songs we've done in the past and there's just more maturity, depth, intelligence on these. They just feel more grown-up." Inspired by such classic rock artists as the Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and the Mamas and the Papas, Taking The Long Way adds a sweeping, Southern California vibe to the Chicks' down-home intimacy. That ambition is matched with lyrics addressing everything from small-town narrow-mindedness ("Lubbock or Leave It") to the psychology of celebrity ("Everybody Knows"). "This album was about finding a balance in the different aspects of our lives," says Emily Robison, "but there's something thematic there, too--it's really about being bold."

5 out of 5 stars I'd Give it 6 Stars if I could.......2007-07-08

That's how much I LOVE this record! Myself like others I've read, have never purchased a Dixie Chicks record before. I have to admit I only bought it because I'm a huge Jayhawks (Gary Louris) fan, and wanted to hear his contributions. Well, even if Gary had never ever written with these women, I would give this CD my highest rating.

Best tracks are "I'm Not Ready to Make Nice". This song give me chills every time I hear it, never fails to produce that effect. "Everybody Knows" is my next favorite. I'm not going into detail on each and every one, but if you've not heard the DC before or are a long-time fan, this record is for you, trust me.

It's a record that I find fresh and exciting every time I play it, still. The Chicks are wonderful musicians, and Natalie has one of the best voices around! This was my favorite record from last year and truly deserved it's title of Best Record from the grammys.

5 out of 5 stars Still Amazing.......2007-06-26

I bought this when it was first released, and I love it just as much as the day it arrived--maybe more. I often get sick of albums that seemed great in the beginning, but I don't think that could happen with this one. It is too perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Dixie Chicks at their best.......2007-06-24

I find it unbelievable that the Dixie Chicks are still not played on country radio stations (on the Internet anyway). Country musics' heart and soul is telling stories; sad, happy, and everything in between. This album tells the 'story' of the Dixie Chicks in an awesome way. It brings chills to hear how real their story is. The way they have brought the emotion and challenges they faced out through their songs shows unbelievably talent and courage.

As far as still not being played goes, here in NZ we only know what we see on the news and as far as I can tell their are plenty of you Americans who have said and done a lot worse than what the Chicks ever said. I think not playing them is very one-eyed and narrow minded. You just have to look at some of country music's icons to see they have rebelled against the 'government.' Willie, Waylon, Merle, Hank Williams Snr, just to name a few.

Go the Chicks, I will always buy and play their music.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-06-22

I loved the Chicks' first 3 albums, and though this one is very different from those, I love this one too. It has such a different context, and is not all carefree and fun like some of their other stuff, but for obvious reasons with everthing they've gone through. They really are very respectable artists and people.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2007-06-11

Bought this for my wife. She loves it. I support the Chicks in all they do. We loved their documentary. Great, catchy music. I like how their style evolves.

The Dixie Chicks aren't old enough to remember when radio programmed pop records next to country, rock, folk, and beyond, but their Texas DNA tells them that's the way music was meant to be heard. On Home, which they coproduced in Austin with Lloyd Maines, the father of lead singer Natalie Maines, they strip off the star-making gloss of Nashville and get down to the meat of the matter, turning out an acoustic record that gives a big Texas howdy to bluegrass. But that's only the framework they use to salute all their influences, from the raggedy rock of Little Feat (on Darrell Scott's irresistible "Long Time Gone") to the pained ballads of Stevie Nicks (covering her melancholy "Landslide") to the confessional Texas singer-songwriters who straddle the country-folk line (Patty Griffin, Bruce Robison). Maines's raw, irrepressible soprano remains a thing of wonder, as do the threesome's exquisite harmonies, which seem tighter and more organic than ever before. Still, the jaw-dropping thrills come from the passionate and masterful picking of Emily Robison on banjo, bluegrass guitarist Bryan Sutton, and Adam Steffey, whose fluid mandolin does Bill Monroe proud. Home, the Chicks' first release on their own record label, puts the front porch back into mainstream music, whatever the genre. And not a minute too soon. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Good American Album.......2005-03-27

To the roots of the matter I would say and very good too. I never thought I would be saying this about a Dixie Chicks album but I liked this one. It's the real thing. It's what America is all about. It touched my heart I would have to say.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant bluegrass takes Chicks back home.......2005-01-14

Home is a good title for this album, as it finds the Dixie Chicks making the most of their bluegrass roots. This outstanding album begins with Long time gone, a great song about family memories. Next comes an incredible cover of Landslide, a song written by Stevie Nicks, best remembered as a member of Fleetwood Mac. Travelin' soldier is a sad song about a woman receiving letters from a soldier who gets killed in Vietnam. Those three songs set the standard for the album but there are many other fine songs here including the title track (a reflective ballad), More love (another excellent ballad) and Top of the world (not a cover of the Carpenters' classic - this is a Patty Griffin song). The other songs are also excellent.

While their two previous commercial releases, Wide open spaces and Fly, had clear bluegrass influences, those albums had a very obvious contemporary edge that is missing from this album. The return to a more traditional acoustic sound will appeal to some while alienating others, as other reviews show. As one who first discovered this group via one of their independent albums (Little ol' cowgirl), I love this album although it is still very different from that early album.

Bluegrass fans will love this but many other people will enjoy it too.

4 out of 5 stars The "Home" of the brave, the sound of the free.......2004-03-26

[...] "Home" is a glossier effort than "Fly" or "Wide Open Spaces," yet at the same time, probably their most earthy. Only a very few artists have been able to walk this kind of fine line, and they would number the kind of musicians and songwriters that appear on "Home" with the Dixie Chicks or as artists in their own right. I'm thinking of people like Marty Stuart, Patty Griffin, Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash, Ricky Scaggs or Emmylou Harris. That's the kind of vibe that "Home" gives off.

The Dixie Chicks understand that there's a small amount of space between Fleetwood Mac and "Travelin' Soldier." By not allowing the factory mentality of most Nashville recordings to interfere with the music (we won't mention the slickslop of a certain "Angry American") and carting their production/recording off to Austin Texas, "Home" neatly avoids sounding like the typical inbred clone of what Music City churns out on a weekly basis. The Dixie Chicks use instruments here that don't require amplifiers and they give the songs room to breathe, even more so when they allow the voices to just take over. No amount of studio trickery can mask the vocal talent that opens "White Trash Wedding," or that Natalie Maines has become a woman of incredible emotional range, as the CD's final two selections "Godspeed" and "Top of the World" prove. This is the kind of music represents my country to me. I just can't recommend the Dixie Chicks enough. They are the sound of the free.

Four and a half stars.

5 out of 5 stars Feels Like Home.......2004-01-18

I am not a country fan, as a black man in the inner city country CD's are the last youd expect to find but in my 330+ collection of CD's you find (2) Shania Twain Faith Hill Leann Womack and the Dixie Chicks. Home. If you pull this CD off the shelf youll notice the disc is missing. It's because I actually travel with this one. This is the one of the few disc I own I can listen to from top to bottom. This is absolutely amazing yet simple. Heartfelt yet Enjoyable. It starts with Long Time Gone which has infectious vocals and great lyrics. Landslide though is the charmer here. On a personal note this song has allowed me to reflect on a lot of personal relationships and friendships. Awesome Awesome Awesome and doesn't matter if its the live version the album version or the Sheryl Crow remix . I listen to this song a lot on Sundays or when i'm sad or reflecting and ready to work on my novel. This song is picture perfect and they are to be commended for it. Traveling Soldier is an awesome song that tells a story and as the Dixie Chicks narrate it I swear i can close my eyes and visualize it like a movie. I Believe in Love is perfect perfect perfect perfect perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favorites on the album definitely. More love is great. Godspeed is awesome and i let that song rock me to sleep many nights. Top of the World is a great song (i hate to sound like a broken record but all of teh acoustic slow songs are great). This album minus the country sounds very Jewel (Acoustic)/Sheryl Crow very very very very pleased and surprised once i got it after seeing the video for Landslide.

This CD is so awesome I've scratched it and need a new one.

I've also since purchased the Live CD Top of The World

Need I say more

4 out of 5 stars I've now gotten myself into the cowboy hat.......2004-01-15

I am not a country fan. I do not come from the south and I usually don't associate with people who like country, which I generally think of as a bunch of people whining when they could be out learning rock. But, I'll fess up and tell you that this album has changed my mind, partly anyways. I finnaly gave in to the nagging of my best friend and bought the cd. At first it was fifteen bucks down the drain, but it eventually grew on me. It's very impressing and rare to see people with such musical talent from vocals to the instruments themselves. The songs "Landslide," and "Top of the World" show off the perfect voice of Natalie Maines, even though she didn't write the songs herself. Group composed "Lil Jack Slade" made my jaw drop at the instrumental talent of Emily Robinson and Martie Maguire.
All of the songs are great, the chicks do a great job of bringing many aspects of emotion through to their music. My personal favorites are Landslide, I believe in Love, Tortured Tangled Hearts, Lil' Jack Slade, and Top of the World.
I highly doubt there are any anti-country fans out there reading this, but if you apprecitate good music and amasing talent, go and get it, for this will most definately not be fifteen bucks wasted.

The major-label debut from this Texas trio proves their instrumental abilities, blending more traditional twang with slow melodic blues, foot-tapping rockabilly, and bluegrass-inspired pop harmonies. From the opener, "I Can Love You Better," the Chicks let their love of music and genuine joy shine through while the energy on this album reminds one of Carlene Carter. Solid musicianship, topnotch vocal performances, and infectious pop hooks make this a stellar project. --Paula Ghergia

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best debuts every.......2007-06-19

This debut album by the Dixie Chicks is truly great. It is true country music [with fiddles and all!] but is very accessible and enjoyable for people who like other genres. I was gonna give a list of the better songs, but they're most all good tunes. This is before the Chicks got jammed up in Iraq War politics [not all their own fault]; back when they were renowned as good musicians, which they undoubtedly are, as a listen to this CD proves.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-06-13

This is definitely one of my favorite CDs. The Dixie Chicks manage to mix incredible vocal and instrumental talent with meaningful lyrics and catchy melodies. Here's a guide, song-by-song:

1. I Can Love You Better -- an easy to relate to song that'll make you want to sing along with its catchy beat.

2. Wide Open Spaces -- Something everybody can relate to, especially teenagers. The melody is nice, but it's the lyrics that really make this song special.

3. Loving Arms -- this song is different from some of the other ballads on the CD, because of the fact that while it is a classic country ballad, it is not drawn out to all eternity. Beautiful lyrics and a lovely melody make it one of my favorites.

4. There's Your Trouble -- definitely my favorite song on the disc. Pure fun, and very catchy. You'll find yourself playing it again and again.

5. You Were Mine -- in my opinion, the worst song on this CD. While the words ARE meaningful, they are depressing and drawn out forever and ever. Every word seems to be held out for ages, and the lyrics are sad to the point of being corny. Perhaps the only song that I wasn't impressed with.

6. Never Say Die -- a sweet, romantic song.

7. Tonight The Heartache's On Me -- if you're not into hard-core country, than skip over this track, which celebrates classic country music. I personally love it for it's traditional melody.

8. Let 'Er Rip -- a ton of fun, with lots of attitude and spunk.

9. Once You've Loved Somebody -- a beautiful melody with meaningful lyrics.

10. I'll Take Care of You -- the second worst song on the album, while the words are nice I had little patience to listen to the almost four minutes of this drawn out ballad.

11. Am I The Only One (Who's Ever Felt This Way) -- a very relatable song with a great guitar melody.

12. Give It Up Or Let Me Go -- a ton of fun, very enjoyable.

You should definitely give this CD a try!

5 out of 5 stars I love this album!!.......2007-05-07

This is my favoite album to play in the car. I listen to it over and over. I love the political overtones, but the music is great, too!! I am not a Country Music fan, but I love this album.

1 out of 5 stars a bigger flip flop than Kerry.......2007-03-24

The country music crowd built the Chicks up, then they went to England and showed their true side. As a result country music lovers, true to their country, turned on the Chicks; so now the Chicks say that their music isn't country. I say that their music isn't music but it just noise.

After the roaring success of Wide Open Spaces--a blend of turn-of-the-century pop and country traditionalism--what do you do for an encore? Rather than deliver more of the same, the Chicks have chosen instead to up the ante in country radio with a follow-up that's both poppier and twangier than its predecessor, and just plain better too. Some of it we've heard before: "Hello Mr. Heartache," for example, adheres pretty closely to the honky-tonk model of "Tonight the Heartache's On Me." Mostly, though, the record lights out for new territories. "Without You" is driven by an in-your-face string arrangement that's downright fierce, and the rootsy "Sin Wagon" may rock harder--and with more solos--than any mainstream country since Buck Owens held forth. That's not to say Fly's perfect. A couple of songs miss the mark, particularly "Goodbye Earl," an abusive-husband murder song that's sure to get criticized (wrongly) for being anti-male but actually fails because it can't decide if it's a moral lesson, a horror movie, or a joke. Still, even in this failure, the Chicks are bravely pushing the envelope. If they push hard enough, maybe Young Country radio will open up some wider spaces. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars My favorite DC CD.......2007-07-01

Excellent CD by the Dixie Chicks. This particular CD is by far their best. It's very upbeat with excellent sound quality. The CD is encoded with each song's title and the CD title if your CD player has the display capability.

I have Wide Open Spaces (second favorite), Home, Top of the World and Takin' the Long Way. Fly is still my personal favorite.
Even if you're not a country music fan, this is still very entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up from the Chicks.......2007-06-20

This is a great sophmore effort. This album is a bit harder and edgier than the first one, and the Chicks pull it off well. Country with a broader appeal. Good tunes are many:

Ready to Run

If I Fall - great faster number with cool scraping fiddles

Earl - a great rhythm and lyrics. Is about a woman and her friend "disposing" of a violent brute of a husband. Of course the song does not advocate premeditated murder. Get a grip. It's just a revenge fantasy

Hello Mr. Heartache - a good traditional-flavored number

Sin Wagon - fast, bluegrassy tune. Funny lyrics like "praise the Lord and pass the ammunition" and "mattress dancing"

Some Days You Gotta Dance - dancy number, like its lyrics and title

Hole in My Head - heavy, grinding instrumentation. Cool effect.

They deserve to sing this song loud and proud, and they do!

Recorded during their controversial 2003 tour, these two discs romp through an ample sampling of hits ("Wide Open Spaces," "There's Your Trouble," "Goodbye Earl," "Travelin' Soldier") as well as beloved album cuts ("Hello Mr. Heartache," "Some Days You Gotta Dance"). Twangy and cheeky all the way, the group rides an energy wave that continues through the stunning two-song encore of "Top of the World" and "Sin Wagon." Yet as powerful as the full-band performances are, the trio's true essence emerges during the acoustic moments--"White Trash Wedding," "Ready to Run," and "Lil' Jack Slade" among them--as well as the Texas shuffler "Hello Mr. Heartache." Some acts might have tried to gloss over a flap like the one Natalie Maines's anti-Bush administration remarks caused. Not here. Patty Griffin's "Truth No. 2" (from the Chicks' Home album) faces that issue head-on. But beyond the political tempests--and Music Row's still-bruised feelings over their contractual firefights with their label--this collection affirms one truth: the Chicks remain the best hope of bringing country into the 21st century with postmodern vitality and its traditions intact. --Rich Kienzle

Regardless if you love or hate what natalie had to say about Bush. Your can never say these ladies dont have guts and the sure will to not ever play nice. Natalie and the dixie chicks may never play nice. Strong will's in country music dont come around much. The music on this audio cd is strong, full or spite, to the point and in your face. Why hide the fact you live in a free country. Where as of today, Bush still hasnt taken away our right to free speech. The songs are all chart burners and a wonderful full range of musically talented songs.

I'm new to the Dixie Chicks, but they have become one of my top artists. First I got "Long Way Home" and like it so well that I rented the Top of the World tour video. Then I had to have the CD. This is a great CD.

Try it, you'll like it.

4 out of 5 stars THEY SURE CAN SING BUT CAN THEY REALLY PLAY?.......2007-03-23

This is my first Dixie Chicks purchase. Just wanted to check them out. I've only seen random clips on television. They choose decent tunes to play. Although I'm a little confused as to their purpose. The instruments they play - guitar, fiddle, and banjo - that's Old Time string band instruments; many Old Time Music and bluegrass bands have the exact same instrumentation. However, the Chicks don't play any traditional tunes. They are more of a straight ahead Nashville Pop/Country singing group. Yes, they hold and play their instruments, and I'm sure they're good players, but you can't really tell by this recording - I couldn't hear much of the banjo, and the fiddler is pretty good. I guess the only way to tell is if they ever got bold enough to make a recording with just them playing and singing.
Their tour had an army of additional musicians in support.
They sure can sing, though. The harmonies are unbelievably good.
If you are interested in a really good all female group who are excellent musicians and singers who sing a mix of traditional tunes and original tunes, check out UNCLE EARL. Their newest release is produced by former Led Zep bassist John Paul Jones, who has developed a fascination with traditional American music, even going as far as learning how to play the fiddle. Uncle Earl's latest is titled Waterloo Tennessee and is available right here on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Live and let LIVE.......2007-02-16

The best gauge to hear a performer or a group is live in concert (or a cd of the concert( Think KISS live or KISS UNPLUGGED are great examples of how good live is). A friend gave me a copy of this Dixie Chicks CD as an early birthday gift, after they won the Grammies.

This 2002 concert is a great showcase for the Chicks. Listening to them on this CD, I feel like I am in the middle of the concert in the best seats in the house.

The production quality is great. The chicks are in fine form and this CD concert is a proof that the grammies wins are no fluke.

I want more of their CDS now

5 out of 5 stars CD -- Dixie Chicks -- Taking the Long Way.......2007-05-19

CD arrived very quickly and was well packaged. I am not what you would call a country fan , however the music on this particular CD is just what any person needs. The music is upbeat and just has an overall great listening feeling. I truly recommend purchasing this CD as ok, there is only 1 song I do not care for off this entire CD and how many times can we say this about a complete CD these days.

Truly great music.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2007-04-11

I knew very little of the Dixie Chicks before ordering this CD.
I recall hearing about the destruction of their CD's by angry "Fans", who didn't like the fact that one of them made a comment they didn't agree with. It seems some people don't really believe in freedom of speech for all Americans.
Anyway, I decided to check out the clips available on Amazon after hearing they had won the Grammy.
I liked what I heard and decided to order the CD.
What a wonderful group!
I only wish I had been listening to them for a long time.
They are an amazingly talented group of women artist!
If you haven't heard their music, I encourage you to check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Don't follow the Herd, Follow the Chicks... (2 Disc set) .......2007-01-22

...The Long Way Around.

Disc 1. (AUDIO)

Welcome back Chicks. We've been waiting for you.

Thanks to you for reminding us what makes America great: Divergent views and the freedom to speak them. What impresses me most about the Chicks is that they have come through a storm; did it together; and still are gracious enough to bless us with their wonderful music. Thanks Chicks.

That said, the opening track "The Long Way Around" is classic up-tempo Chicks, leading listeners to dream of the what-ifs (as if I can honestly pretend that their lyric, "Someday I'm gonna' settle down," still applies to me). The Chicks' statement "No I... I could never follow," says it all.

"Easy Silence," I suspect is a heartfelt thanks to the family, friends, and fans that stood by the Chicks when they discovered that freedom is not free.

"Not Ready to Make Nice," serves as the girl's answer to all those who would have them to be anything less than full, free, participating Americans. And hey, I didn't necessarily agree with Natalie's controversial statements at the time, but I am proud of both her and the Chicks since. It takes guts to speak your mind, take the heat, and above all, stick together when the fun hits the fan. I have always admired the Chicks for being great musicians and having great fun, but now I admire them more for being great friends.

Don't miss out on the soulful "Lullaby," and its "How long do you want to be loved? Is forever enough?"

Then give a listen to "I Hope," yet another thought-provoking tune with the Chicks singing a choral backup.

Disc 2. (VIDEO)

On this special video disk Chick fans are treated to a five pack of studio performances featuring:

1) The Long Way Around
2) Easy Silence
3) Voices Inside My Head
4) Truth #2
5) Wide Open Spaces

Next is the provocatively stark video of "The Long Way Around."

Lastly is an in-depth Chicks' video interview including "Taking the Long Way," album producer Rick Rubin. Rubin is known for his eclectic collaborations with such artists as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Run DMC, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash and now the Chicks. Five Grammy nominations for "Taking the Long Way" can't be wrong, can they?

In short: the Dixie Chicks (and Mr. Rubin, thank you very much!) don't know how to fail. They get an A.

5 out of 5 stars New Direction.......2007-01-11

Having been practically forced out of Country Music by the radio stations, the Dixie Chicks take a more mainstream/pop approach in this album. "Not Ready To Make Nice" tells how they feel about the roller coaster that they have been on since "The Incident" (when lead singer, Natalie Maynes said that she was ashamed to be from the same state as George W Bush, as he was about to mislead the US into the disasterous War in Iraq). Lots of raw emotion and worth the price of the album.

4 out of 5 stars Very good album.......2007-01-10

The title track is fantastic as is Not Ready To Make nice but overall I preferred Wide Open Spaces and Top of the World

5 out of 5 stars A unique ensemble -- it's a shame it had to come to an end........2007-06-07

Some of you might know -- but others might not -- that there was a group called the Dixie Chicks, formed back in the late 80s, that was very different from today's group of the same name. The two groups are related, of course; sisters Martie and Emily Erwin were members of both the original ensemble and the current group. But they really should have changed the name of the band somewhere along the line, because today's group bears little resemblance, in appearance or music, to that original group -- whose first album was "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans".
Clearly, the majority of Americans prefer the new group -- as evidenced by the fact that the new Chicks have found the commercial success that always eluded the original Chicks. But the changes that were required to achieve that success came at a heavy artistic cost. Today's country/pop/rock sound makes the Chicks just part of that generic pop scene that sells most of the records, but has little real art to it. The original Dixie Chicks, on the other hand, were a truly unique group: An all-girl band who could really play and sing serious bluegrass and western swing music. And I mean really play. You'll have to try to get a copy of this album to see that I'm right about that.
Unfortunately, getting a copy might not be easy since the "new" Chicks have tried mightily to erase any memory of their past. "Thanks Heavens for Dale Evans" is out of print and will never be re-released, because Martie, Emily, and Natalie Maines want everyone to forget about Robin Lynn Macy and Laura Lynch -- the other two members of the original group, and the two members who were the real personality and heart and soul of the group (I saw them perform live in the early 90s, and Robin and Laura absolutely sparkled during the performance, while the Erwin sisters -- providing superb instrumental and vocal performances, to be sure -- pretty much stayed in the background from a personality standpoint). I especially remember Robin twisting her hips in time to the music, her western skirt swishing back and forth, as she strummed away at her guitar and sang the lead on the title song to this album. When she, and later Laura, left (were forced out of?) the group, it was the end of something special -- a really unique musical ensemble.
If you can get a copy of this CD, please do so. You might find that the past the current Chicks wish to hide was really the high point of the group's history.

5 out of 5 stars Great Texas country and an outstanding female voice........2007-03-31

One of the greatest female country music albums of the 90's. It is real Texas country with an outstanding vocal performance and a nice fiddle too. If you are looking for the cookie cutter country music of today, don't buy this album! This is nothing like the Dixie Chicks' music of today. But, if you want real, refined and pure country music, you will be hard pressed to find a better one. Check out "West Texas Winds", one of the greatest renditions ever recorded. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-01-03

This is a must for anyone who collects the Dixie Chicks. I got mine. Good luck getting yours.

5 out of 5 stars Different Chicks, somewhat different sounds.......2006-09-03

I have been a big Chicks fan since "Fly" and supported them through "the incident". I got to see their recent concert and wanted to hear them from "before". I was not disappointed. This album and their older sound has it's own special, acoustic and bluegrass charm. Glad I got it, the old and new Chicks rule!

5 out of 5 stars If it were a tape, it'd be worn out already.......2005-12-24

I drove across country shortly after getting this cd, and I barely took it out of the cd player the whole way--not sure how many hundreds of times that means I've listened to this! I love the "new" Dixie Chicks, too (sisters Martie and Emily Erwin are the only common thread), but I was curious about their previous sound, and I wasn't disappointed! This is a great record, with a lot of great harmony and, of course, talented ladies playing the heck out of just about every stringed instrument there is.

That said, buy their new records too! Natalie Maines, the lead singer, is witty and expressive, and her beautiful voice goes great with Martie and Emily's fiddle/banjo/mandolin/etc. Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy brought some very different things to the mix, but their departures were largely, if not entirely, their own choices, and I hate to see Natalie punished for that.

This is very different from what you get with Natalie as lead singer, but it is great music. Their other older albums are awesome too! Love these girls...they are so very talented!

1 out of 5 stars Another egg laid by the Chickens.......2006-12-13

Shouldn't have made this album. What drivil. Don't waste your money or time.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but.......2005-12-24

Not as consistently good as "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans", but definitely worth having. You can definitely hear the sound getting more "packaged" as the girls try to make it big and move away from their bluegrass roots, and the increased slickness makes for a less interesting record, but this is still great music!

It's the beginning of the end--maybe even the end of the end--for Laura Lynch, though. The more contemporary sound of this album does her no favors (I thought she was ideally suited to the more nostalgic style of "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans"). The bluegrass-style rough edges are gone, paving the way for the totally different (but also wonderful, in my opinion) edginess of Natalie Maines, which is what really made these girls big stars in the end.

4 out of 5 stars The best of their early indie albums.......2003-04-03

This is the first album I heard the Dixie Chicks on, and for years I had them fixed in my mind as this nice, unassuming alt.country act, not realizing for some time what a huge success they'd become in Nashville. The act noticibly starts to tighten up, first with the loss of songwriter Robin Lynn Macy, and the inclusion of much more material by outside composers, such as Jim Lauderdale, Kim Richey and Jamie O'Hare. The catchy Radney Foster tune, "Whistles And Bells," is still one of my favorite DC songs, but after that opening salvo, the band's newfound professionalism is readily apparent -- the basic building blocks of their sound are all in place here, and the Erwin sisters, Emily and Martie, are beginning to assert themselves as lead singers and songwriters. More bad news for lead singer Laura Lynch: Lloyd Maines, Natalie's daddy, was brought in to play pedal steel on a few tracks, and thus, the writing's on the wall. Fans of the Chick's Top 40 Nashville hits will find this the most accessible and familiar-sounding of their early indie albums. It's slick, solidly produced and yet still soulful.

4 out of 5 stars Not What You Might Expect From The Chicks.........2001-08-06

Well, I must say that, while this is an amazing album, it is nothing like what fans of "Wide Open Spaces" and "Fly" will expect. The leading lady on this CD, Laura Lynch, sounds nothing like Natalie Maines, the current lead singer of the Dixie Chicks.

    1. "Whistles and Bells" Great country song, sounds like the old days of the Grand 'Ole Opry. Very traditional song, "Whistles and Bells won't ever bring you love and happiness, She's never gonna give her heart the way that I would give." A very beautiful song worth listening to.

    2. "I'm Falling Again" Written and sung so smoothly and simply, it just stays with you from the moment you hear it. "We're destined to win, I'm falling again- right back where I been" A sweet, tender love song, very expressive banjo.

    3. "Shouldn't A Told You That" I actually don't understand the title of this fast paced, square dancing-themed, very catchy title track. "I'm only human, he shouldn't a told me that." A fabulous song, the best fast song of the album. Very good instrumental riffs and vocals.

    4. "Desire" "I can't undo what's been done when the web's already spun, I got caught up in desire" Just a fast, fun, beautiful, emotional song. Although, "Can't Undo What's Been Done" might have been a more appropriate title.

    5. "There Goes My Dream" Starts off sounding a bit like "Cold Day In July," then reverts to what sounds like "I'm Falling Again" with different lyrics. My favorite of the album, beautiful, melancholy and sorrowful.

The rest of the album SERIOUSLY drags. "Planet of Love" is a torture session, sheer misery! "I've Only Got Myself To Blame" could have been much better with a little more effort in the tune, but as it is, it's barely worth mentioning. The other three songs are okay, but just don't have any passion or thought in the lyrics, it's as though Laura is merely reading the words from a sheet of paper and struggling to stay on key. And it isn't working. I feel I must warn that Laura's voice isn't as powerful as Natalie's, it's a very traditionally folk song voice, but it packs no power, no passion for what she's singing. Also, the songs on here are either love ballads, or slow songs stating a regretted afair. Nothing has the quirkiness of "Don't Waste Your Heart," "Goodbye Earl" or "Tonight The Heartache's On Me."

I still recommend this CD, just don't expect it to be anything like "Fly" or "Wide Open Spaces." "Shouldn't A Told You" demonstrates a very classical country sound and style with a very simple theme and little creativity between songs, which isn't always a bad thing.
