The equivalent of Moon Mullican without the piano?.......2004-07-08
When I saw this album, I was surprised by the track listing, and the reviews. I decided to buy it and it was as good as it said on the tin.
Tracks like the Jim Reeves-style "Lonesome 7-7203", "Unwanted",
"Last letter" and the Country-Moon Mullican-style "I love you 1000 ways" should all satisfy country ballad lovers. On the other hand, "I've Got the Blues", "You nearly lose your mind" (very similar to Moon's "Triflin' woman blues"), "Back to the dog house" are perfect blues songs. "Teardrops from my eyes" takes a more R&B feel, while "Got you on my mind" is rendered in a very Delmore-Brothers-influenced way (like "Blues stay away from me"). "Be my life's companion" is probably the least original song here, as it takes words and melody from the gospel standard "In a land where we never grow old". The only dated song here is "When They Found the Atomic Power", a song in praise of nuclear weapons (which is no good thing!).
Like many, Hawkins remembered his times with the late Hank Williams, and did a tribute song and also Hank's "Kawliga". As well as that, he also shows Jimmie Rodgers' influence on "Rattlesnakin' daddy" (an old Blind Boy Fuller blues, with ammended lyrics and a yodel added).
Overall, a great set of music. Hawkins reminds me very much of Moon Mullican in his vocal style and also the types of music he did and his equal fervour and attention to all of these styles. The only faults on this otherwise flawless set are:
1. "Atomic power" shouldn't have been allowed on instead of other superior songs I'm sure existed.
2. There are two versions of "Lonesome 7-7203" for some reason, and they sound almost identical.

Finally!!! How long have you wanted this?.......2002-03-23
All of these songs are original recordings recorded for King records, and the booklet is top of the line. This is a very classy release.
Hawk was one of the premier Honky Tonk Vocalists of his time, and these songs prove why he was regarded so highly.
I believe this set is out of print, so if you can find it, it may be a good idea to buy it, even if you pay a higher price. We will probably never see this music on disc again.
