We are not to familiar with the artist, but it's nice easy-going music with a reggae flair.
worthwhile.......2007-01-05
Michael Franti once again brings light to his "Songs from the front porch" album.....this cd definitely along with his others is worth buying even if there are duplicate songs from other cd's.....the acuoustic version has a more at home style to it!
Michael is my new guru - he should be everyones!.......2006-09-21
Michael Franti has it down - with his lyrics, sound and his laid back lifestyle! He is my new guru - listen and live through and by his lyrics!
Peace!
Everything music should be. Simply rythmic & pure........2005-01-09
I don't know what you expect from a dreaded guy showing his bare foot on the cover, but that picture is meant to fool you. This is the most honest& best album I have played over the air in 2004. The more times you listen to this cd all the way through, the more you'll be convinced this man is put here just to help you see. Very rarely you'll find such an artist at his peak, and virtually unknown. Very proud to say my listeners request Michael Franti regularly. Every flower has a right to be bloomin :) Brilliant!

What's a modern Mississippi folk chanteuse to do? After being accused in some quarters of compromising her largely acoustic-based music for a major-label deal (1997's Eighteen over Me), then ultimately falling victim to end-of-the-decade roster contractions, Garrison Starr returns after a four-year layoff to stubbornly argue that some of those previous aesthetic choices weren't mere affectations--or a deal with the devil. Sharing production chores with engineer Chris Fuhrman, Starr pushes her dry, expressive voice bravely to the front of a jangly, more spaciously dynamic musical mix. Having survived some hard career knocks and slouching toward 30 years old in a business seemingly drunk on hormonal teen-pop, there's now a welcome bittersweet edge to her songs, especially in the stripped-down, acoustic charms of songs like the vibrant "Serves Me Right" and "Silent Night," the latter enhanced by dreamy guitar atmospherics and the harmonies of Mary Chapin Carpenter. While it's perhaps too easy to read biz-savvy double-entendre into songs like "Star Power" and "Knucklehead," the dramatic "Gardenia" and country-tinged "Hardest Part of Living" only argue that this Starr is still ascending. --Jerry McCulley

Comfortably In-Flight.......2003-11-29
Songs From Take Off To Landing is Garrison Starr's major follow-up to 97's critically acclaimed Eighteen Over Me. Things were looking good for Starr with spots on the Lilith Fair tour, but like many other female singer/songwriters as soon as the tour was over radio play dried up and the girls were banished to the cutout bin. After walking away from music for a time between her two records, Songs From Take Off To Landing plays more as a journey in confidence than anything else. Starr realizes "Somethin's Gotta Change" in the opening track. By the time she hits the middle of the album's "Raging Fire" she recognizes that her heart has found its beat with brand new bright mornings. She also picks up some iconic friends along her way as Mary Chapin Carpenter and Steve Earle lend their support on the journey. On the penultimate track, "Hardest Part Of Living," Starr begs her lover to "come on, break my heart" because she knows she'll ultimately be stronger because of it. One of the most rocking and assured tracks, "Knucklehead," closes the disc acknowledging "you make me wanna rock / you make me wanna sing" and somehow you know she's referring to herself and her rejuvenated confidence in her craft.
Unknown for now... but not for long........2003-05-15
I just saw Garrison Star open for Steve Earle in buffalo, and I must say I was blown away! I had never heard her play or sing a note before, but let me assure you she does both very well. She's the rare combination of a powerful vocalist and a damn good guitar player, and a pretty good songwriter to boot. If you like lucinda williams, or neko case, give Garrison Star a listen. You won't be disappointed.
Hey, this is really good stuff........2003-02-18
I had the pleasure of seeing Garrison Starr last week, she was the opening act for Steve Earle. I'll be honest I had never heard of her nor did I really care. My whole evening was focused on seeing Steve Earle live for the first time. All I can say is wow, she was excellent. I bought the cd from her at the show(which she signed), and she is a realy classy lady. I really like this cd, the hooks are incerdible, I find that the songs reel through my head constantly, they are completely infectious. This is comming from someone(myself)who can normally be found listening to the likes of John Hiatt, Gomez, Cowboy Junkies, Idaho, & The Tragically Hip. This makes a great additon to my collection.
Loved her live.......2003-01-29
The majority of reviews here are from fans who have caught Garrison Starr live. I had never heard of her until I went to see Steve Earle at the House of Blues in Hollywood this last week. She was the opening act. I was mesmerized by her performance. That is why I can not give this CD 5 stars. There is a definite raw, almost 'punk' attitude to her stage presence and especially her guitar playing. Imagine Emmylou if she'd been influenced by Kieth Richards or the Ramones. Garrison's voice, live, is something to behold. It is at once raw, powerful, beautiful and pitch perfect. This CD, unfortunately, does not represent what I saw that night. There is too much 'studio polish'. The edge has been rubbed smooth. Listen to "Serves me Right" and you will catch a glimpse of what this entire CD should have sounded like.. This track was produced by Steve Earle (who also lends his voice in a subtle background). If Mr. Earle has any influence on her, I hope it will be to maintain her musical integrity and not 'give in' to the industry. She personally signed every copy of this CD that was sold after her performance. She's a class act and deserves to be huge.
What a great CD!.......2002-12-03
I can honestly say this cd has been in my player for weeks now and I have yet to skip over a single song. I also had the opportunity to see Garrison in NYC a few weeks ago and though it didn't seem possible, her live performance was even better! Garrison, can't wait for the next one!

soul candy in east baltimore.......2000-04-11
tortuga came to me unexpectedly, just as I was looking for inspiration in my winter-induced depression. Days of tedious work that bled into the nightime of smoky houses where noone lives. I had to hold on, wait for some chocolate Jesus to reawaken me from this lowside of the road. Georgia Lee gave it to me for Christmas, as an accidental gesture...and I began to question, "what is he building?" A new perspective to the classic panorama. Although I am not a musician myself, I find expression through song and this album became my filipino box spring hog. I recommend this album to anyone brave enough to release themselves from the cold water of the mainstream noise and try a new sound for a little while.
Listen Again and Again..........2000-02-23
This is simply a great record. A record you will be lucky you stumbled upon. Not far from the land of Hayden, Pedro the Lion, and Tom Waits, Tortuga's payoff is both immediate and long-lasting. It covers great geographical and dramatic distances as we watch the characters move and grow. A proud if quiet work that deserves a regular rotation on your gramaphone and a roll of the dice... go ahead... but this thing.

Album Description
Folk-rock with just the right amount of edge for sharp ears. Moody, kind, big-hearted, kick-ass -- one interesting song after another. The third release from eclectic folk-rock artist Eileen Hemphill-Haley, "Porch Songs" welcomes the listener as if sharing the inside scoop on a myriad of experiences. "EH-H tells a story that is all of our stories. Finding yourself in her lyrics is a startling and remarkable experience. It's a memorable time with the new cd, "Porch Songs" (Keri Green, Jefferson Public Radio).
