"Boot Scootin' Boogie" zoomed Brooks & Dunn to the top of the country line-dance craze in 1992, and one could hardly blame them for riding the crest, even if it left them in a rut of shallow, preening dance ditties. They began showing greater depth in the late '90s, with albums like If You See Her and Steers and Stripes. While Hillbilly Deluxe is musically consistent, Tony Brown's production sharp and focused throughout, the themes here revert to the same old same old: empty, shallow stompers with lyrics that occasionally sound dated. "Play Something Country," another Ronnie Dunn collaboration with Terry McBride, duly name-drops current Nashville stars as well as P. Diddy and Patsy Cline. Things don't improve with the blustery "She Likes to Get Out of Town"; "Just Another Neon Night," with its painfully clichéd line "turn off that rap, boys, play me some Haggard"; or "Building Bridges," a "vocal event" with superfluous input from Vince Gill and Sheryl Crow. Only the moving story-song "Believe," brimming with heart and honesty, reminds of their potential when they think beyond the boot. --Rich Kienzle

Album Description

Since bursting onto the roiling country music horizon with "Brand New Man," Ronnie Dunn and Kix Brooks have made breaking new ground, pushing the honky tonk envelope and having too much fun doing it their total mandate. And on August 30, 2005, the hardcore musicians return with Hillbilly Deluxe, an album that merges classic jukebox country with Brooks & Dunn's jacked-up take on modern sounds in honky'n'rocking music. Produced by the legendary Tony Brown (Steve Earle, George Strait, Lyle Lovett, and Patty Loveless, in addition to being a member of the multiple-Grammy-nominated Notorious Cherry Bombs with Rodney Crowell and Vince Gill), Hillbilly Deluxe is a slightly ragged, fairly organic take on just how power and accessibility can merge for an intoxicating take on what Saturday night is made of.

"You never wanna rest on what you've done," says Dunn. "Working with Tony, it's pure music--front and center every time. He was part of that country scene that was Emmylou and the Hot Band, which was always just one match away from blowing the music apart it was so good, so intense, but also so raw. If you're gonna play country, you wanna strip away a lot of the stuff, get down to the heart of the matter--and find songs that dig a little deeper into the way these folks live their lives. I mean, Hillbilly Deluxe is IT: it's about how it really is, not the way the media paints it--that notion of taking the life as far out as we know these good ole boys and girls do."

Certainly "Play Something Country," the raving new single which is B&D's fastest moving ever, is a siren's song of want, release and what matters to the core on a night on the town, while the down-low title track with its funky pocket, Rolling Stones background wailing and stop-start rhythms portrays the essence of modern day "big timing in a small town." Brooks celebrates female independence with the road-tripping go-git-it-girl romp "She Likes to Get Out of Town" and Dunn invokes a classic tears-for-a-quarter country of classic vintage with "She's About as Lonely as I'm Going to Let Her Get."

"With Red Dirt Road, I think we started heading back to what got us here... meaning our roots," confesses Brooks with a wry grin. "There are so many ways to make music, but sometimes just plugging straight into your inspirations is the very best way to go--so you'll hear 'em, ALL of 'EM: the Stones, Jones, Haggard, Tom Petty, a nod even to Rod Stewart's folkie stuff, the soul that made soul music, but came out of the churches. It may be the broadest record we've ever done--and it sure was fun."

5 out of 5 stars Hillbilly Deluxe.......2007-05-02

The cd is by Brooks and dunn, and they sing this song. I think they are realy good singers and they try hard. It is exiting because they have very good performances at all of thier shows. They have won a few gramys in thier past but thats what makes them great. But the weird thing is when they are singing in the back of a pickup truck why would you want to do that. But the best thing about the song is that people will enjoy this song.

5 out of 5 stars I BELIEVE!!.......2007-03-28

Prior to this CD, I confess I was not Brooks & Dunn biggest fan. HILLBILLY DELUXE changed that; it truly showcases the amazing talent this Duo possesses. I can honestly say this may be the one CD I actually wear out!

5 out of 5 stars Their outstanding music is back!.......2007-01-06

I have all B&D's CDs. The early ones I loved. The recent ones I don't even listen to as I don't like them. I had given up hope until I saw this one and read the reviews. I LOVE IT! Every tune is great except for the title song. They got just a little too rap/hip hop for me. That one I skip past as it really annoys me. The spiritual is uplifting, the foot stompers are marvelous. If you haven't bought any of theirs, buy this one. It's hard to stop playing it.

5 out of 5 stars Hillbilly Deluxe Brook & Dunn.......2007-01-03

This is a great CD, every song, is very good, of course you have to enjoy this type of artist to think so. But I recommend this CD for those of you that enjoy the award winning artists.

5 out of 5 stars Best so far...........2006-11-29

My opinion is that Hillbilly Deluxe is Brooks & Dunn's best recording so far. I bought it after hearing "Believe" but ended up loving every song on the the CD!!!

For fans of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, et al., this is the essential cartoon soundtrack as well as a monument to surrealism. During his 22 years as a composer for Warner Bros. animated shorts, Stalling invented the musical vocabulary of cartoons. Producer Hal Willner has lovingly assembled a sonic collage that showcases Stalling's compositional genius and uncanny ability to borrow a tune. It's a whirling collection of random moments, chock full of music you never knew you knew, from Bugs Bunny's theme from "Rabbit Fire" to Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" to Stalling's own "Woo! Woo!" Also included in the mix: outtakes from recording sessions, and several complete scores. --Heidi MacDonald

5 out of 5 stars Best compilation CD ever.......2007-02-18

Carl Stalling gave me the best musical education I ever had. I'm spending the rest of my life learning the titles and composers of all the hundreds of tunes I first heard in his cartoon scores. I've had this CD ever since it came out, and it still is one of my favorites.

Only a handful of tracks are a complete score from one cartoon; most are snippets from several cartoons edited together with a common theme.

This CD is about a composer and his music, more than about the cartoons for which he composed it. To drive home this point, it includes the score from, of all things, 1939's "The Good Egg." No one would consider "The Good Egg" to be among the best Warner cartoons, but the score, heard by itself, turns out to be a tour de force that is highly representative of Stalling's work. That's what makes this CD such a great listening experience: It was pieced together by musicologists who chose the music based on its auditory qualities, and not on the relative fame of the cartoon associated with it. It is not merely a trip down memory lane (although it is that, too), but is a great creative work in its own right.

Despite the vast amount of Stalling music that exists, this CD provides as ambitious and exhaustive an overview as can be given, and its 1995 follow-up, while also worth having, is but a pale afterthought. There's no following this act.

3 out of 5 stars Here we go........2006-11-16

This CD features music from the Warner Brothers cartoon film scores by Carl Stalling. There are some complete scores and also some "medleys", with clips from various cartoons strung together. Carl Stalling was a master at writing music for cartoons, but something is lost when you just hear the music without seeing the cartoon.

5 out of 5 stars Stallings CDs.......2006-11-10

If you harken back to the days when you snuggled on the couch on a Saturday morning with your little ones, and ate donuts and drank juice and watched "Bugs Bunny" you will love these CDs. You'll recognize all the characters and their entrances and their pratfalls...and laugh and say "I've heard that!"...it's a walk down memory lane and a very special one, at that. I highly reccommend these to anyone who loves B Bunny.
Not to mention these are some of the finest musicians you will ever hear...a lesson in classical music, and cartoons.

4 out of 5 stars The Carl Stalling Project.......2005-09-12

Music from Warner Brothers cartoons "Golden Years" (1936-1958).
Carl Stalling was the chief music arranger for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. He was one of the foremost composers of cartoon music. This disk is much better than "The Carl Stalling Project Volume II."

5 out of 5 stars Warner Brother's King of Music.......2003-12-02

Even if you do not recognize his name, Carl Stalling is a very familiar composer. He wrote the soundtrack for many of our young lives as the composer for Warner Bros.' "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons from late 1930's to late 1970's. Hal Willner has compiled this CD that for the first time lets you hear the music on its own, and lets you realize just how much of the cartoons' impact came from Stalling's music.

Willner sifted through hundreds of cartoons to choose about 40 with the most significant music. He presents the music in a variety of formats. A few tracks provide the soundtrack for a single entire cartoon. Others are medlies from a certain period in Stalling's career or pieces that set a particular mood (such as the "Anxiety Montage"). There are also tapes from recording sessions for 1951's "Putty Tat Trouble" that give insight on how this music was recorded. I couldn't recommend this CD any more highly. (After you've given it a listen, check out a Raymond Scott "best of" album like "Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights" to see just how many of its tracks are familiar from various cartoons.)

Stalling's music, instead of following the traditional rules of musical structure (exposition, development, theme, variations, etc.), was written to follow the rapid action of cartoons. Stalling would not compromise on this, even if it meant having the 50-piece orchestra play fortissimo for five seconds and then having only one piccolo playing the next four seconds. To ensure a perfect correspondence between the sound and the image, Stalling and the cartoon's directors would agree on a few sketches and on the timing of the action. This enabled Stalling to compose and record the music without even seeing the movie. Carl Stalling was also a master at telling a story through music, with gestures so clear, that there is never any doubt as to his intentions.

Stalling once said, "One problem with cartoons today is that they have so much dialogue the music doesn't mean much." Unfortunately, this statement rings true as we move into 2004. But keeping Carl Stalling from rolling in his grave is not why you need to buy this CD. You need it because it is IMPOSSIBLE to maintain a bad mood while this CD is playing. You need this to listen to as a stress reducer on those tough days. You need this because it is complete childhood in a disc.

I challenge you to turn on your television and watch some Looney Tunes. Turn up the volume and listen while doing something else (wash dishes, write a paper perhaps.) I guarantee you will know exactly what is happening, and to whom. This was the comedic skill and genius talent of Carl Stalling.

As Porky Pig would say: "abieh-abieh-abieh... That's All Folks!"

What would Bill Monroe do? The liner notes would have us believe that these hicks happened upon some AC/DC records, liked what they heard, and learned the songs in tribute to the dead stranger who brought the music of the Young brothers to them. What holds the seemingly cracked concept of bluegrass interpretations of AC/DC's hits together is the utter lack of irony in the singing and playing. By holding true to the spirit of the originals while refashioning them in the high lonesome mode, these fellows deliver a satisfying set of modern hillbilly music. Apparently the members of Hillbilly Dixie are a bit ashamed of this project (their names are not listed in the credits). No need to be embarrassed; while one might be better served by a Flatt and Scruggs record, this enjoyably lightweight release is played and sung with such apparent love of the music that it's hard to grouse about its novelty aspect. Highlights include a heartfelt "You Shook Me All Night Long" and a blistering take on "Have a Drink on Me." --Mike Johnson

5 out of 5 stars Can't help but love it!.......2007-03-31

I stumbled across this purely by accident at a local record store at one of listening stations. I thought, okay, this is either going to be SO horrible that I can't stand it, or one of those oh-so-cool little finds, so I HAD to queue it up and try it.

At first I could hardly really listen for laughing! First out of the gate is the heavily twangy "Highway to Hell". Wow, whoever thought they'd say those words together? So I'm listening away, smiling & occasionally giggling while thinking which of my rocker friends would get the biggest laugh out of it. Then something strange happened. The more I listened the more I took a shine to it, and to the good mood it was putting me in. I ended up buying it to listen to in the car on the way home. What can I say, it was on sale! : )

I have got to tell you, when I put it in the player in my car & really listened to it I found I REALLY liked it! These guys play like they're on fire! All the novelty and such aside, these boys can knock it out! And I defy anyone to stay in a bad mood when listening to this way-too-much-fun CD.

I trot it out here and there for my more musically adventurous friends, and have played it for both the rockers & bluegrass fans alike. Everyone has totally taken to it with that same strange wonder, saying things like "Where the hell do you find this stuff?" and "Only you, darlin'. Only you would ferret out something so strangely cool." "Damn, but those guys can play!"

What have you got to lose? Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars They are all fun .......2007-02-04

Okay so its like this,

I have been listening to rock and roll for 25 years

I work in an office, do the "cube life", sitting at a PC for most of the day, working on my own, popping out to get liquids or drain liquids, chat some, that's the life. Now this ipod deal comes along a few years ago. Only, if your going to listen to music all day, you just cant listen to real pure rock and roll all day, you just cant. I don't care if your homeless sitting in a park all day with an ipod on, you just cant listen to real hard rock and roll for hours and hours at time all day everyday.

Classical puts me to sleep. I can handle some of it in the morning, ease into the day, but not allot of it. Pop I don't care for much. Country is singing about my dog had an affair on my wife doesn't cut it either, what did I just say? Anyway, and Rap is out. Opera, No, what ARE they saying?!. So what to do?

Well thanks to my Dad, who used to watch Hee Haw all the time when I was growing up, and man did I hate it that show! Even today I seen some of it not long ago, its corny country stuff, but when Roy Clark comes on and solos for a song, then man always caught my attention. He was flat out good. But still I would "never" and have never owned a bluegrass cd. Get real!

But then, a friend, listening to me talk of my search to get some kind of music going for the day, loaned me a String Cheese Incident CD, an On The Road 3 cd set, and said just try it for awhile. Let it grow on you. What do you have to lose? Well yep I ended up submitting to it, and then really liking it. Before long I was walking around the office humming along, co workers going what you got playing man?? So having remembered seeing these Pickin' on cd's before, I said well why not try it, so I started off with one, right away started laughing and laughing good not at it. Then I find these Bluegrass tributes. Now mind you no way would this happen up till a few years ago. Getting older? I don't know, many people are born and raised on this stuff. Its all in how you approach it. And I will tell ya what, that was a couple years ago and 6 pickin' on cd's later, a few bluegrass tributes, I am so much more relaxed at work now. What I didn't notice before was music and singing along with it ALL day works on you more than you realize. I actually like the pickin' On ones more, as I listen to music all day, but these are fun also! Just having some "cruising tunes" playing with no singing really is relaxing. I don't have this playing all day, but its taking up a couple hours a day. Some more String Cheese cd's. And I will sooner or later just end up getting everyone of these pickin' on cd's. You see its not all about "oh this one doesn't jam enough" or the other one is better than this one. Nah. If you like Rock, and don't want to listen to it all day, then get used to these trust me, I did and its worth it. I still laugh at dif times playing them. And now some coworkers and friends have them loaded up also. I still have all the "real" bands loaded into my ipod, never giving up on Classic Rock and Roll, ever!

Lastly, I am not someone who sells these CD's. I actually am very picky if you read my reviews, and look at my Amazon name! and flunk so much stuff that's out there. Believe me this has caught me off guard. Just thought I would let anyone know that is searching for a new way listen to the day to try it out a bit. Give it time. Don't just listen partly or once then blow it all off, scoff and go Sacrilege! For I did before, but now a convert, and after a couple years of it, I get it, and will be enjoying these for years to come, just like the real rock and roll at times. Good luck.

4 out of 5 stars Too funny..........2006-10-27

If you're an AC/DC fan and you have a sense of humor, you've GOT to hear this! Great musicianship and just too...damn...funny! I'd like to hear this band do Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band...

5 out of 5 stars The way AC/DC was meant to be heard!.......2006-06-03

The music of AC/DC is immortalized on this, the finest bluegrass recording since "Dueling Banjoes". The production of this album was probably the most historically important moment in music since Elvis was deputized by Nixon, and a cultural highpoint for America. God bless Hayseed Dixie!

1 out of 5 stars This is NOT music- it's torture for all ages........2006-05-16

I am a fan of pretty much all musical genres. I have to say this is just sorry. No, really it's a piece of [...]. That is truely the best thing I can say. It sounds like someone faking country "accent" and murdering great songs. The music isn't any better than the vocals. If you want to pair country and metal it can be done and done well- Just NOT by these fleas. Check out Iron Horse- they have talent.

Album Description

The industry dismissed it as "hillbilly" music, but the young rockabillies fed off the energy of jumpin' cuts from the country side of the musical equator. Here are 120 country-flavored cuts from the dawn of rock 'n' roll!

5 out of 5 stars Boppin' Rockin' Hoppin'.......2007-02-07

This is a great box set. Like so many of the Proper sets offers lots of informative info into the music and the artisit. If you like Boogie Woogie Swingin' Hoppin' Country that provided alot of rock-a-billy sounds you'll love this set. If you're looking for hard core 60's rock-a-billy it's not here. A great set, well worth the money. Glad I bought it!

The best twenty bucks I've spent on a box set in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Red Hot & Rockin'.......2007-01-03

This is a superb collection of spectacular and sometimes downright bizarre rockabilly! A great place to begin for one not very familiar with this genre.

4 out of 5 stars More Hillbilly Than Rockabilly.......2006-09-25

"From Boppin Hillbilly to Red Hot Rockabilly" offers up four CDs jam-packed with bopping hillbilly music but, unfortunately, very little in the way of rockabilly.
If you're a fan of the boppin' hillbilly genre this is a great find but fans looking for early rockabilly will be disappointed.
The sound quality is first rate and there is a nice liner notes booklet.
As with all sets by Proper, this set offers a tremendous value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Vassar and the Boys Stretch Out.......2001-09-07

During the '70's, fiddlin' Vassar Clements was in such high demand as a side man that it was damned near impossible to purchase an album that did NOT feature his remarkable playing. In addition to his key roles in ground breaking efforts such as "Will the Circle be Unbroken" and "Old and in the Way", Vassar made the rounds among such disparate pop stars as Paul McCartney, Elvin Bishop, and Dickie Betts - and put out some product of his own, as well.

"Hillbilly Jazz" mostly features the Bob Wills/Texas swing side of Vassar's playing, ably assisted by a strong backup group featuring David Bromberg on acoustic and slide guitars and some great pedal steel work by Doug Jerrigan. In addition to covering the Wills hits "San Antonio Rose" and "Take Me Back to Tulsa", there's a great version of Benny Goodman's "Breakfast Feud" (Jerrigan particularly shines on this one), a bluesy "Sittin' on Top of the World", and closes with a gorgeous instrumental version of Bromberg's "Last Song for Shelby Jean." What really makes this collection work is while there's some wonderful picking going on, nothing ever sounds forced. The vocals (shared by Vassar and Gordon Terry) give the session a relaxed feel that someone still keeps the listener's attention.

This effort is a must-have for fans of Vassar, and a whole lotta fun for fans of swing, country, and bluegrass music.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, it's on CD.......1999-10-16

I purchased the vinyl version of this album in 1979 after first hearing it at the Maintenance Shop, a bar/music venue on the Iowa State University campus. I've long entertained the notion of purchasing a new turntable just so I could listen to it again. What a pleasure to find it on CD ! A perfect introduction to road house country and bluegrass...

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......1999-10-11

This is Bar-B-que music at it's best. The line up is incredible! Lovers of Vassar Clements take note, he had some good recording days making this one. Bromberg was cooking along with the others, I bought it for the Vassar element, but this recording is just S'wonderful, Texas Swing players like Strait and Gimbel, Asleep at the Wheel etc... probably all own a copy and should. This is a masterpiece, in a live-sounding setting. Dig in and enjoy!

Yoakam was coming off a platinum debut album with a wiseass title (Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. Etc.) when he released Hillbilly Deluxe. Neither as hard-nosed nor as bereft as he'd soon be sounding, Deluxe was nonetheless both a smart, stylized missive and the kind of nouveau honky-tonk set that country radio was suddenly ready to eat up. With stuff like "Little Ways," "Please, Please Baby," and "Johnson's Love" on the plate, it tasted great. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars King of rockabilly.......2005-12-28

This is Dwight's sophomore release, and it sounds like he's been doing it for years! A great follow-up to "Guitars, Cadillacs....." This one has a little more "rockabilly" than his first album, but is often considered by many, to be his best work. I'll disagree with that and say "Tomorrow's Sound Today" and "This Time" were far better, but this one still deserves an A+. This album includes a cover of the great Stonewall Jackson's "Smoke Along the Tracks", as well as a cover of Lefty's "Always Late..."; both numbers are superb covers and Dwight does justice to both. Persoanlly, I say the best tracks are "1,000 Miles" and "This Drinkin' Will Kill Me". This is one any true country music fan must own. A+

5 out of 5 stars Hillbilly Deluxe, Dwight Yoakam.......2005-07-20

Wonderful CD. I was so glad to find it. I have worn out a cassette of the same title and have been unable to find this anywhere. Some songs on here that are not on his other CD's. Thanks, Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant rocking country album.......2004-04-09

This was Dwight's second album (after Guitars Cadillacs). It contains seven original songs, all written by Dwight, and three covers. The overall feel of the album is upbeat, yet the lyrics are generally sadder than the rockabilly-styled musical backing would suggest. Most of the songs here are up-tempo or mid-tempo. The only ballads are Please please baby, Johnson's love and 1,000 miles. It occurs to me that 1,000 is a number that Dwight seems to find significant because he later recorded a song titled A thousand miles from nowhere as well as including the number in the title of one of his compilations.

The album yielded four major country hits - Little sister (a cover of the Elvis Presley classic from the early sixties), Always late with your kisses (a cover of a Lefty Frizzell country hit from the fifties), Please please baby (one of only two ballads on this album - the other being Johnson's love) and Little ways. The third cover here, Smoke along the track, is a train song that was originally recorded by Stonewall Jackson in the fifties.

This is, as I would expect, a high quality album from Dwight. By his own very high standards, it is not his strongest album but if you're serious about Dwight's music, this is essential. If you only want one or two of Dwight's albums, go for one or both of the compilations, Just lookin' for a hit and Last chance for 1,000 years.

4 out of 5 stars Only a slight letdown from first album........2003-07-23

There's just no getting around it (for me anyway): this album simply does not have the electricity of *Guitars, Cadillacs, etc.*, the overall range of *If There Was a Way*, or the depth of the great *This Time*. Having said that, what's here is still very good and certainly worth having in your collection.

Both "Little Ways" and "Smoke along the Track" are good but are pretty much standard country fare. The same is true of "Always Late with Your Kisses", "Throughout All Time", and "This Drinkin' Will Kill Me". They're all good songs but there's nothing extra special about them. However, the remake of the Elvis standard "Little Sister" is reminiscent of the remake of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" from the first album. Both recall the old adage that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

The real strengths of the album lie in "Johnson's Love", a great ballad, "Please, Please Baby", an electric country-rocker, "Readin', Rightin', Rt. 23", and the best of the bunch, "1,000 Miles", not to be confused with "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere" from the *This Time* album. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dwight.......2003-02-20

This album is a sure favorite of mine, although not as great as Guitars, Cadillacs, etc. this album is exceptional. My favorite tracks are obvious favorites like Little Ways ,Please, Please Baby , Little Sister and Readin' ..RT23. 1000 miles is the most forlorn and longing song in existence, telling a tale of a busted marriage and reflecting on the loss. This is an awesome album, worth many many listens. I highly suggest this album, it is among Dwights top 3 albums.

A little rock, a little country, a little bluegrass. That sums up this album. Marty is a country gem. This album is Marty at his best.

5 out of 5 stars Marty Stuart - Hillbilly Rock is excellent.......2005-10-19

I bought this album on a cassette tape when it first came out in 1989 and since then have practically worn it out. I'm buying the CD to replace it. Marty does some mighty fine guitar and mandolin playing on this album. His vocals are excellent too. Make no mistake; this is definitely traditional country music, with Marty's rockabilly style in full force. Marty covers Johnny Cash's "Cry Cry Cry" and does some really good guitar licks on it, it's my favorite song on the CD. I also like "When The Sun Goes Down", a song Marty Stuart and Mark Collie wrote that is reminiscent of Merle Haggard. "Me and Billy The Kid" is a great song too. All of the songs on this CD are keepers and you won't be disappointed with it.

5 out of 5 stars Typical Marty Stuart.......2005-10-05

Brilliant, catchy, and traditional country music. A great album that showcases Marty's awesome sound. The album has the usual rocking, honky-tonk numbers, including: "Cry, Cry, Cry" and the title track "Hillbilly Rock". I found his cover of Johnny Horton's "the Wild One" quite unusual, as I personally find it to be one of Johnny Horton's "worst" songs; but Marty's cover does breathe new life into this 60's number. Gotta say my favorite is the last track "Since I dont Have You", a traditional and beautiful song that is best heard when there's no alcohol within reach. I'd say the album rates just a bit lower than "This One's Gonna Hurt You", but it is well worth your money and I have no doubt you'll wear out the disc.

4 out of 5 stars I'm buying it now........2002-01-19

I love this album and had lost it. Now that I found it here, I'm gonna buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Marty At His Rockabilly Best!.......1999-07-18

I love the album! I don't know anybody else that can jam on a mandolin, like he does. "Me and billy the kid" is great! He pays homage to Johnny in "Cry Cry Cry" , and "Western Girls" Rocks! "Hillbilly Rock" discribes the contents of the album perfecly!

On A Hillbilly Tribute to Mountain Love, Hayseed Dixie, the trio of hard-rock-loving bluegrassers who previously swore devotion to AC/DC, offer us a mountain-music version of the AOR radio format. Of course, there's something inherently, and deliberately, comical about covering the songs of Bad Company, Aerosmith, and Ted Nugent via surging banjo-driven arrangements and hyper-twangy harmonies--a point that becomes doubly obvious when these modern-day musical butchers contribute an original like "I'm Keeping Your Poop," a slice of lingering romantic spite so preposterous that the only reasonable response is to bust a gut laughing. But all this hilarity makes a couple of fairly serious points, too. First, most people have had enjoyable histories with many different genres of music, so why pretend otherwise? Second, anytime you re-imagine a familiar song, you focus attention, once again, on its lyrics. If the Hayseeds do anything here, it's to remind us just how horny and fun songs like Joan Jett's "I Love Rock & Roll," Queen's "Fat-Bottom Girls," and Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom" really are. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars Me and My cousins Favorite album ever. Ever........2004-06-01

This is my favorite album ever. Ever. It is sooooo romantic. And fun to dance to too. It is also the favorite album of my cousin Billy. He thinks it is soooooo romantic too. He thinks it is fun to dance to too. We've created sooooo many special memories while listening to this album. Billy says he feels this album was made just for us. And I just have to agree. It really does feel like that. This is my favorite album ever. Ever. Even better then David Hasselhoff. I just loooove him. And Billy likes him a lot too. But this is our favorite album ever. Ever.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as their first.......2002-07-29

I really liked their freshmen release, A HILLBILLY TRIBUTE TO AC/DC a lot. AC/DC+bluegrass: Two crappy genres that manage, somehow, to sound just ducky when melded into one. But Mountain Love lacks the twisted, psychobilly focus of that effort. It's merely AOR+bluegrass.
The only songs that work to any campy degree at all on Mountain Love are CENTERFOLD, CAT SCRATCH FEVER and FEEL LIKE MAKING LOVE; the latter of which sounds, at best, like it was a SOGGY BOTTOM BOYS outtake. I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL and BIG BOTTOM are just plum embarassing; the latter being a travesty of a parody of a sham of a travesty... FAT BOTTOM GIRLS doesn't belong here, at all.
My advice to Hayseed Dixie: Next time make another hillbilly-hardrock tribute. There are tons o' worthy/lousy candidates for the pickin': KISS, Metallica, Black Sabbath &/or Led Zeppellin come readilly to hand. Stick to a proven formula: metal+bluegrass

5 out of 5 stars awesome cd.......2002-05-30

When I first heard of Hayseed Dixie, I laughed at idea of mixing classic rock and bluegrass. Then, I heard them on the Bob & Tom radio show. I loved them! It sounded so different with lyrics I remember hearing in a different way. But now I could understand every word. They are great musicians and can play great solos. But really what is funny is Barley Scotch's hokey voice. It'll make you laugh. They have done a excellent job picking rock songs that sound good bluegrass style. So if you are a fan of either bluegrass or rock or both, buy this album. It's worth it just for the laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Carson Ranks With The Best.......2007-06-06

There are already great reviews here that say much of what I wanted to say, so I don't have to add much. Real Country Music wouldn't be complete without Joe Carson's enormous contribution. Out of thousands of CDs in my library, this is one of the dozen-or-less that I play over and over.

5 out of 5 stars The Best singer you've never heard of............2006-02-05

I first heard Joe Carson back in the early -70's while going through some of my folks' 78's. At first, I thought it was Webb Pierce (on one of his best days); then I distinctly heard Hank; on the other hand, there was the sound of Ray Price (his Cherokee Cowboy Days). All of these sounds came from a young kid (16 when he started performing) who should have, by every right, been the most heralded Country/Hillbilly/Honky Tonkin' singer ever; and yes, that includes even the great Hank Williams. But, Joe Carson's life was cut short just as he was hitting his stride. If there was a way to rate this collection higher than 5 stars, I would not hesitate to do so. As with all of the Bear Family Records releases, this one is an outstanding collection, beautifully recorded and mixed, and a thorough set of liner notes/booklet. Not only does this album showcase the stellar voice of Joe, the backing band (all legendary members of the Hank Thompson era) will knock your socks off. While there are 33 songs here (3X more than most current releases), there are a few real standouts: "I Gotta Get Drunk", "The Last Song I'll Ever Sing", and "Shoot The Buffalo" all showcase his voice. And, there are a few old favorites here as well, inlcuding "Fraulein" and "Who'll buy the Wine". This is one of those albums you have to own; and I can assure you, you'll be shaking your head in amazement at Joe Carson's talent. A++++

5 out of 5 stars Joe Carson best honky tonk singer, since Hank Williams sr........2004-12-12

In 1984 i bought an album with Joe Carson.
In 1985 cd`s came.
I wrote Richard Weize of Bear Family records if they could do an re-relese on cd.
Sure they did with all the recorded songs by Joe Carson.
The song "The last song(i`m ever gonna sing)" is the ultimate best country recording there is.Buy this, you won`t regret.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the Title, this is a Must-Have!.......2002-12-12

I played the few records we had by Joe Carson when I was a country music dj in the mid to late 60's. I've looked for them and any others for almost 40 years. It was worth the wait. A friend from Scotland emailed that he has had nothing else in his cd player since he first got this in the summer of '02. After hearing it, I understand why.

Forget the title cut, it's a novelty, I fear just the name will keep classic country fans who need this cd from buying it.
Spend your egg money or knock off the kid's piggy bank, but get it ASAP!

The legendary guitar picker Tommy Allsup (who lost the flip of a nickel and gave up his seat on the plane Buddy Holly had chartered in Clear Lake, Iowa, to Richie Vallens) produced the West Coast sessions ... "Helpless", "Last Song I'm Ever Gonna Sing", and, of course, "Double Life."

Allsup is quoted: "They had actually demoed 'Double Life' for a Bob Wills record, and I thought, 'Boy, what a good song.'" If you think you've heard that voice singing harmony with Joe on "Double Life" and "Helpless", you have:

"Glenn Campbell had demoed those ... he made the demo on 'Helpless' and 'Double Life'. Glen had made kind of a western swing demo to pitch it to Bob Wills..."

That's Glen Campbell playing guitar and singing harmony, along with Sonny Curtis, Glenn Hardin, Allsup, and a star cast of others. Buck Owens playing guitar on an earlier session. The book insert notes the different sounds of the Nashville sessions and the Ken Nelson, then Tommy Allsup, produced West-Coast recordings. As with many Bear Family sets, the earliest material is interesting, but not what you're buying it for. The last 15 or so cuts, with the exception of the title cut, are simply pure country gold.

The book that comes with the cd is as good as Bear Family ever produced for a one-cd package. Tons of new information on the music and musicians who passed through Carson's life. It adds important new perspective (with never-before-seen photos) to Texas-based country music in the early 60's. There's a hilarious story of Joe banging on the door of George Jones' bus, with predictable results. And then telling Ray Price after a multi-day drinking bout with George he'd found a better singer than him. With predictable results!

If you can afford only one cd in the next year, and you love the classic country/shuffle beat of Ray Price, Faron Young, Mel Tillis, George Jones, etc., this is the cd you should get. Too many times memory tricks the mind into recalling something was better than it turns out to be. Memories from 35 years ago were right on target. Joe Carson should finally get his Gold Record, despite the hideous title. It's that good!

4 out of 5 stars Forgotten Honky Tonk Great.......2002-11-15

Most fans of country music will not have heard of Joe Carson. He died too young, and without enough hits to make a name for himself. But one short listen to this reissue of his extant recordings, and anyone will see that had he lived Carson would rank among the great honky tonk singers. His style is closest to Ray Price, Jimmy Heap, and other Texans of the 1950s. The finally reissued "Hillbilly Band from Mars" is a classic and much better than one might think.
