Although these days Byrd is mostly known for his vast output of sacred choral works, he contributed a considerable number of secular and instrumental pieces to the repertoire, and this disc includes a variety of works in all of these genres. In Byrd's England, musical accomplishment in the form of singing or playing an instrument was an accepted and highly regarded social skill. Naturally, composers filled the need for music to be performed in the homes of amateur musicians, and much of it took the form of songs and instrumental pieces for keyboard or groups of viols. Here, by means of the talents of I Fagiolini--a refreshingly spirited singing ensemble--Concordia consort of viols, and acclaimed harpsichordist Sophie Yateswe enjoy both Byrd's lighter side and a few of his more substantial religious works, arranged in an attractive and enlightening program. --David Vernier

Why aren't more ensembles doing this?.......2006-11-23
The theme of this CD focuses on the recusant nature of Byrd's Latin works - Catholicism being illegal at the time, his music would not have been performed by cathedral choirs as we often hear it today. So it certainly makes sense to perform them one on a part, and who knows, even with female voices on some of the parts. I Fagiolini is as good as any other early music group performing this repertoire, and the quality of the performance is excellent.
The thing that makes this CD stand out is the use of historical Anglo-Latin pronunciation (vih-jih-LAY-tee as opposed to vih-jih-LAH-tay.) It is like a breath of fresh air to hear this as opposed to the 19th-century ecclesiastical/Italianate Latin that most groups use. I don't understand why so many groups are resistant or even hostile to the notion of historical pronunciation. Far from being pedantic and irrelevant, historical pronunciation is well-documented, not that hard (once you lose the baggage of your college Latin diction classes) and it does have an affect on sound of the music. In this recording, I Fagiolini provides a great example of how this can be done well and why it should be done more.
If you're interested in learning more about historical pronunciation, check out the books Singing Early Music (ed. Timothy J. McGee), English Choral Practice 1400-1650 (ed. John Morehen), and if you're lucky to find a copy, Singing in Latin (Harold Copeman.)
A well-selected collection of Byrd compositions.......1999-02-09
I Fagiolini put together an honest rendition of Byrd choral works. With a many existing recordings of Byrd choral works done with multiple voices per part, it is easy to forget that a number of such works were written for performance at a house or manor, by a very few musicians and in secret at forbidden Catholic ceremonies. I had previously only heard my favorite sacred song, Quomodo cantabimus, performed by The Sixteen. It was a delight to hear I Fagiolini with far fewer voices per part -- in this way they bring out so many of the little details that evince Byrd's true mastery. Yates' harpsichord performances are likewise honest, not overly ornamented (as it is easy enough to do with Byrd) and overall well-played. An interesting twist is I Fagiolini's pronunciation of the Latin texts, utilizing a far more English and less Italianate accent. It is quite strange to ears that are used to the latter, but an accompanying explanation justifies the accent as a choice to perform the choral works as accurately as possible.

Atmospheric Ballets.......2005-06-03
The two ballets on this disc represent Jean Francaix at his most humorous. This is the third disc in the series of Jean Francaix's orchestral music and once again demonstrates his ability to express musical ideas with wit and precision.
The ballet Le roi nu (The Naked King) was based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Emperor's New Clothes and was premiered in 1936 at the Paris Opera Ballet with Serge Lifar doing the corrriagraphy and dancing the role of the king. The ballet has been considered as Lifar's greatest achievement. The music is well-suited to the subject, colorful and expressive. The music tells the story perfectly, down to the laughter when the king, believing himself to be dressed to perfection, is found to be naked by the members of the court.
The other ballet on this disc, Les demoiselles de la nuit (The Ladies of the Night), is termed a ballet for cats in two scenes and was premiered in 1948. The action concerns several cats that mimic human behavior. The chief male cat named Baron de Grotius intends to wed a beautiful white kitten named Agathe; but she is in love with a human violinist. The marriage to the Baron takes place, provided with a nicely written procession and ceremony music. However, through her love of the violinist, Agathe becomes human herself but keeps falling back into her feline ways - most notably when she kills a bird. Agathe also has problems preventing herself from joining the nocturnal cavorting of her cat companions; the cats are chased by the violinist who falls to his death. The ballet ends with Agathe curling up next to the body of the violinist to show her devotion. Agathe was danced at the premiere by a young Margot Fonteyn. The ballet is evocative of moon-lit nights - a nocturne opens (and also closes) the first scene. The dances are playful and romantic with a touch of feline stylization to the melodies that nicely describe the cat's world in music.
Jean Francaix was truly in his element when writing his ballets. The dances are colorful and beautifully orchestrated. This is a pleasant disc that anyone interested in French music will want to have.

Toledo's Finest.......2004-07-07
This is an amazing cd from my hometown, Toledo. OnceOver is comparable to 40 Below Summer, Sw1tched, From Zero, Endo, etc. but they are definantly a band of their own. I know you've heard this a thousand times but it's true! They are really interesting people , too. Go to www.onceover.cc and watch the misc videos and "Love Of Your Lie" video. Also, listen to "Solace" at www.t-townmusic.com. Please support OnceOver and buy their cd!
This Precious CD, LOL.......2004-07-04
This CD is really excellent. Onceover is diverse enough musically that fans of all genres will like it. I'd say Blue Serenity, Far and Away, Dimming the Day, and Axiom are my favorite songs, but it's hard to pick a favorite, as all of them are excellent. From the mellow sounds of Blue Serenity, (very Deftones sounding to me), to the straight up metal assault of Love of Your Lie, if you like your Metal music that's actually musical, this is it!
BEST NEW BAND!!! AMAZING AND ORIGINAL!!!.......2004-05-30
These guys are a breath of fresh air coming strait out of Toledo, Ohio. If you are into any bands such as 40 Below Summer, Korn, From Autumn to Ashes, Factory 81, or Chimaira you definitely have to check these guys out. They have such an original sound and are an amazing song writing band that blend together melody, metal, hardcore, and rock into a whirlwind of sound that would make anyone want to jump into the mosh pit.
Dave Ayling is definitely a singer that will keep your interest. He has an awesome style and very intelligent lyrics. Paul Dwyer, Nate Periat, and Nick Archer throw down some of the most bad ass riffs I have ever heard. They harmonize together perfectly and have a very unique melody. Paul also adds some very cool violin into the mix. Steve Dwyer pounds out drum beats that are very versatile and complex.
Together as a whole this album has 12 very different songs that are a perfect showcase of this band and the best work of their very promising careers. Just give this album a listen and you will not be disappointed. It has something for every metal/rock/hardcore fan.
These guys ROCK and you will not be disappointed by this album. I haven't taken it out of the CD player since I got it.

Fantastic music!.......2005-10-17
I highly recommend this CD to all who love folk/acoustic. Jake shows his many talents (not the least of which are great lyrics and colorful tunes)!
Best voice/musician I've seen in a long time.......2004-09-28
I first saw Jake at Club Passim's in Cambridge almost two years ago, and while he was playing with three other established New England singer/songwriters, he blew all their doors off. He combines intelligent lyrics with beautifully intricate melodies and a voice that rivals JT's to create some of my favorite music. The only album I like better than Caged Bird is his new self-titled album in which he further extends his impressive range of talents. Buy this album, you'll be glad you did!
Lovely!.......2004-06-16
Ok, I must confess, I have not heard Caged Bird in its entirety However, from what I have heard, I would recommend this album to anyone. His first album excels as well, and they both are fantastic. The group is wonderful, and what amazes the most about Jake himself is the way that he makes the fiddle sing. This is Good Music.
Jake Armerding is a breath of fresh air.......2003-06-06
It's about time artists like Jake earn some recognition for making REAL music. Too often today music is manufactured and too many artists sacrifice originality to make money. Fortunately for the world, this is where Jake comes in with his folk-y coolness. With his growing fame (and we're hoping that his name and music continue to spread like wildfire), fans have access to some good, solid music with real lyrics. This CD is awesome and I'd recommend it to anyone, it has a wide range of appeal. (add applause here)
Quite possibly next James Taylor.......2002-06-27
BUY THIS ALBUM. I have to agree with the reviewer from MN. Jake may quite possibly be the next James Taylor. However, I have no idea what the reviewer from MN was talking about in regards to the hidden track. Whoever was doing all that screaming (I believe it was some joker by the name of Dan O.) was not talented at all...he sounded loud and obnoxious. I'd hate to live next to that guy. I would probably fine him, if I did.

Album Description
Devon's music combines the passionate vocals of Paula Cole with the anger and intelligence of Ani DiFranco, interwoven with subtle undercurrents of Tool and Bad Religion. Middle Eastern-influenced melodies, tribal percussion, and distorted guitars intertwine to create a textured sound that would be just as at home on the Warped Tour as on Lilith Fair.

Astounding CD.......2004-07-09
I can't get this one out of my player. It's a broad mix of modern gurl music and adult alternative. Great vocals, thoughtful lyrics, scorching guitar work, great production. Glinda (AKA Phyllis) and the band are destined for hugeness.
Lots of world-music influence, but it's otherwise very difficult to categorize. Just listen to it.
