It might be news to some, but there's no one more important in the history of country music than Hank Williams Sr.. Happily, Williams's material is available today in many configurations, ranging from greatest-hits sets of 20 or 40 songs to a complete set of his singles, and even a complete set of all his recordings. This one, like many of its 20th Century Masters series brethren, is just too damn short--a paltry 12 songs--and is slightly skewed in favor of his good-time honky-tonk material, shying away from the songs that best show off his dark, even doomed genius. All of these songs are unimpeachable classics, so for the budget-minded, it's still a good set. But once you get hooked on Williams, you'll want more than is available here. --Daniel Durchholz

this is some of the best early music you can find of hank jr .it shows his unique style of being able to grab your attention by showing his early bluesy side and his country side and its cool to be able to compare it to his music today

Yeah, I know most folks enjoy the so-called "Outlaw" Hank Jr., but here is a superb collection of his early works. I have always felt that Hank Jr has had one of the strongest voices in country music; whether imitating his old-man, or doing southern fried boogie. This collection by 20th Century Masters, covers his pre-rowdy days, and includes: "Cajun Baby", "Eleven Roses", "Living Proof", and "It's All Over but the crying". It is said that Hank Jr was conflicted with imitating his father, and of course, the autobiographical "Living Proof" seems to point that out, but it is also quite apparent that Hank was developing his own smooth style, that was quickly becoming polished. Would Hank have gained the popularity he now has if he would have stayed this route???...probably not, as he'd be competing with folks like Bobby Bare. But, if you put away the bandanas, cowboy boots, and sunglasses, there's a fine voice that can compete with anyone else on the scene. And this album is living proof of that.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro cd to Hank Williams.......2004-12-28

Although this album is quite short and lacks some depth, this is a great cd for anyone who has not been exposed to Hank Williams and his music.

2 out of 5 stars A waste of time. Go ahead and buy the 10-c.d. set........2004-04-01

Someone as big as Frank Sinatra and The Beatles cannot be served even by the "40 Greatest Hits" out-of-print set (as great as it was). Go ahead and buy the "Complete Hank Williams" set. Hank's well worth it. Incidentally, a limited number of sets were produced (10,000), prices are already firming up, and you can pass it down to your descendents. They'll love Hank and will think they're listening to someone like George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. He was almost that big!

1 out of 5 stars Buy the Ultimate Collection instead.......2002-07-27

Folks, this CD is a sick joke. Twelve songs billed as Hank's greatest? Come on. No effort here. Kaw-Liga and so many other great tunes are missing. Get the Ultimate Collection for a few bucks more and have forty two songs. Every song on this CD is on that set anyways.
