It comes as little surprise that John Doe employs three different female vocalists (Kathleen Edwards, Jill Sobule, and Aimee Mann) to assist on A Year in the Wilderness. After all, it was Exene Cervenka's restless harmonies that bolstered Doe's own dusky lead vocals, providing X with a distinctive sound that has seldom been imitated and never bested, even by the group's own alumni. Doe nonetheless continues to refine the formula, delivering sharp, literate lyrics to rugged, often pensive odes. He mines a kinder, gentler, but no less incisive territory of the somewhat precarious space between the sexes. Doe even strums an acoustic guitar in full folk-ballad mode on "A Little More Time," a somber reflection on love lost. Former X guitarist Dave Alvin provides rootsy firepower on the driving "Hotel Ghost," as close as this disc comes to the old L.A. punk days. But Doe's raw approach chafes at the introspective nature of these songs, adding somber, gritty gravity to the uncompromising lyrics of "Unforgiven," "you say I'm good for nothing, so nothing's good enough for me." While the set lacks the blazing nervousness of X's best material, the older/wiser Doe preserves an uneasy sense of youthful alienation that sports a musically grizzled, five-o'clock shadow. Just Fabulous.......2007-07-07

Although a long-time fan of X, I'd never bought any of John Doe's solo work before. I read a good review of this album in the LA Times, and thought I'd take a shot.....

I love it. The most commercial cut is "The Golden State", a great tune. I think my favorite song is "Unforgiven", and "Big Moon" seems to haunt my head. The whole album has this vibe that I can't describe, other than to say I find myself wanting to play it almost every day. It has a "deep sound", both musically and lyrically. The songs flow so well that listening is effortless, and leaves you wanting more when the album is finished.

I believe than John Doe is a great creative talent who seems to get better with age. You won't regret buying this release; on the strength of this one, I'm going to buy some of his previous releases!

Spend Some Time in the Wilderness.......2007-06-28

From the rollicking rhythm of "There's a Hole" to the breathtakingly soft intensity of "Grain of Salt," from the seductive and bluesy "Big Moon" to the "hauntingly" punkish "Hotel Ghost, "A Year in the Wilderness" contains all of the elements that have made John Doe one of America's greatest (although often underappreciated) singer/songwriters: poetic lyrics, vocal intensity, and well-chosen guests.

No one expresses the possibility, the longing and the loss of the landscape of love better than Doe. Like the wilderness, Doe's landscape is striking-- awe-inspiringly beautiful and able to make us feel connected to each other and the world while it resonates with a sense of isolation. This album features some of Doe's best writing to date, yet even when he makes use of a familiar phrase his delivery is transformative. No where is this clearer than in "The Golden State" where Doe uses phrases so familiar they have become clichés and transforms them in to a unique and powerful revelation about the complex nature of relationships through the alchemy of his delivery.

This album is a must have for long time Doe fans and a wonderful introduction to his work for those discovering him for the first time.

I've loved having John's solo work all to myself...pop music's best kept secret...music to share with your most musically sophisticated friends...music for long road trips. I suppose that's all over now.

And it's about time.

Because this MF is too big, too smart, too rocking, too cutting, to be denied a wide audience. I would love to see this thing come out of left field and sell 6 million copies, and have John win 5 or 6 Grammy's next February. Not that awards mean anything, but every once in awhile it's nice to see an exceptional artist, at his best, get recognized.

Besides, John has the best hair in rock and roll. "John, see you in Denver (6/22). Yrs. George Tadich Jr."

Meet John Again.......2007-06-12

I do get to meet John Doe almost everytime I go to see X , The Knitters or solo and when the night is over ,I think WoW I just shook hands with ,or got my picture with, or autographs of the greatest musician of my time, and after I heard "A Year in the Wilderness"Its really true.This project contains some of his finest. Rocking with Dave Alvin( the greatest Guitarist) on Hotel Ghost ,next with Kathleen Edwards Rocking with Golden State( You must get Return to Sin City, A Tribute to Gram Parsons They sing Hot Burrito No.2 & We'll Sweep out the Ashes in the Morning ,Its just Great)Next we slow it down with the next two trax both great but I just can't stop repeating "A little more Time " with you, with me( Takes you back ,your kids are born and how fast they grow, and you just wish some days could just last forever, like at birth. Unforgiven with Aimee Mann Has a Great Haunt about it.I would have bet that was Smokey Hormel,but I don't see him in the credits.The Bottom line is you have to have this album even if you never like X or anything to do with John Doe.If you don't know anything about him , Now its time to meet John Doe.One more thing, "The Meanest Man in the World" is probably the coolest Haunting balads to go in my ears.I hope you don't miss out on this treat. These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic. The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity--a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. "Sweet Thing" and a duet with Rodney Crowell on "Nothin' for a Broken Heart" pulsate with Chuck Berry intensity that contrasts with the solid, '60s Memphis groove of "Bet It All on You." The Reason Why showcases Gill's legendary ease with ballads, several of them enhanced by creative string arrangements by David Campbell (Beck's father), including "What You Don't Say" with LeAnn Rimes and "The Memory of You" with Trisha Yearwood. The stunning "Faint of Heart," a remarkably sultry jazz duet with Diana Krall, could become a standard. Some Things Never Get Old revisits classic fiddle-steel honky-tonk, music Gill has long reverenced and referenced. "This New Heartache" is straight out of Ray Price. Gill and Patty Loveless tear up "Out of My Mind" and Allison Krauss and Dan Tyminski join in for the waltz "I Can't Let Go." "Don't Pretend with Me" honors Ernest Tubb's honky-tonk primitivism. Little Brother, all-acoustic and often bluegrass-flavored, shines from beginning to end. Along with "Molly Brown," a stark cautionary about racial violence, Gill sings both "Cold Gray Light of Dawn" and "Give Me the Highway" with the Del McCoury Band. He and Guy Clark close it out with "Almost Home." Despite outstanding past efforts, Gill--one of the top hitmakers of the '90s--hasn't had a Top Ten single since 2000. No matter. In an unmatched outpouring of virtuosity and energy, Vince Gill has created a 4-CD set of 43 new and original songs that MCA Records will release Oct. 17 under the title These Days. The collection is an artistic tour de force that displays Gill's mastery of lyrics and musical styles, ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock.

"I started looking at all these songs I had," the amiable superstar explains, "and going, `Shoot, I want to record that song, and I want to record that song.' I just kept checking with the other musicians to see if they were available. I had no deadlines, no rules or anything like that. So I just kept trying songs."

To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.

Initially, Gill planned to pare down the songs he'd recorded to a single album. Then, in one of the studios he used, he spotted some Beatles memorabilia and recalled that the Fab Four had routinely released multiple albums within the same year.

Gill took the idea to Luke Lewis, Universal Music Group Nashville Co-Chairman, who totally supported his notion of multiple releases. In fact, Lewis came up with an even more radical strategy: he told Vince to go and record more songs that explore his passion for acoustic sounds and release a 4-CD set. And that's exactly what happened.

Gill co-produced These Days with famed keyboardist John Hobbs and sound engineering whiz Justin Niebank.

A lot of the songs are vintage Vince Gill. His guitar playing is nothing short of spectacular. The duets are wonderful. His guest singers blend well with Vince's, oh so sweet, tenor. I love the album, but give it only four stars because so many of the songs are featured on albums I already own.

Inspired by negative reviews.......2007-05-21

Before ordering this CD set, I read most of the reviews on Amazon. A couple of them were very negative. However, I just couldn't believe in a "bad" recording session from Vince Gill. Especially with the great stars who collaborated as guests on many of the cuts.

Well, the good news is the negative reports were just wrong. I like these CD's, there are four in the box set, more every time I listen to them. An excellent product and a great addition to any music collection that loves ballads, country, bluegrass, and yes: Vince!!

This item is a must buy for all Vince Gill fans. We purchased it after seeing in Vince in concert. The concert was great, but you can't have that all the time. His range as a musician is evident throughout this 4 CD set. Plus, the musicians he surrounds himself with make this a must buy.

Another letter from home........2007-05-29

If you've never heard MoFro, then you need to tune in to and find out about some "front porch soul". If you HAVE heard the first two albums, don't think Country Ghetto is some rehash of previous material to fulfill a label contract. It IS the same soulful instrumentation and vocals. But JJ has more stories to tell and they come across to me like a letter from home - full of honest emotion about things we share, the good and the bad. Country Ghetto has a more serious feel to it for me than MOFRO and LOCHLOOSA. Its not just the lyrics of a young inciteful poet, talking about life. Its the lyrics of a man, living life with the convictions, dignity and respect for life you learn when you grow up in a Country Ghetto.

Sounds real old school, really brings me back to the sixties (I am old)

What it lacks in polish, it more than makes up for in pure funk.
The track, A Woman, brings a tear to my eye and goose bumps in conjuring up the spirt of Otis Redding

NOT BAD...BUT NOT GREAT, EITHER!.......2007-05-08

This is a pretty good album...although there is nothing earth-shattering or innovative, here. Several of the tunes were obviously inspired by Otis Redding...although Mr. Grey's voice doesn't have the power that Mr. Redding's did. A few of the tunes had more of a Bill Withers sound. Over all, the musicianship was pretty good and the sound, generally, harkened back to a typical 'Stax-Volt' session from the '60s. The songwriting was fairly basic but serviceable within the context of the format.

All in all, though, this album was bit more derivative than I had hoped for and it sounds like Mr. Grey is still in the process of trying to find his own unique musical "voice". I suspect that if and when he does, he will be worth another listen.

It's not by happenstance that "Come Back to Me," a fairly candid cover from X's Under the Big Black Sun, is the kickoff to Sarah Borges's second album, nor that the feisty country-singing Bostonian would find inspiration from a 25-year-old punk album. Actually, despite a host of twangy guitars and songs about love, longing, and retribution, Borges admits to having a greater fondness for Exene Cervenka's caterwauling--and '80s and '90s indie rock--than any vocal tutorial from Loretta Lynn. Pulsating tracks such as "Lonely Town" and "Diablito," and the poppy "Stop and Think It Over," tugged from the mold of the Go-Go's' Beauty and the Beat, are in debt to those influences without overshadowing what's left of the record: a rummage through the roots of American music. Borges lays down the honky-tonk ("False Eyelashes"), dishes out the blues ("Open Up Your Back Door"), and two-steps her way through an admission of commitment, inquiring "How many ways can I say that I love you?" ("The Day We Met"). Twelve songs. No filler. And a gifted artist on the rise. --Scott Holter

Superb Sarah.......2007-07-07

I was walking down the street in Seattle and heard a band playing at one of those lunch time concert things. The music is usually so bad at those shows that I run away, but this time I heard the loveliest voice echoing around concrete and glass "park." I was hooked. I wandered over to watch the band, and it was even better than I had hoped. Sarah and her top-notch band were exhausted from travel, but rockin' out and having so much fun that the crowd kept growing and growing. I bought the Diamonds in the Dark CD after the concert, and they're every bit as good in the studio as they are live. A rich, varied disc with a lot of heart. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.

Whoa! Sarah roars back with another fantastic CD. Every song is great. A little country, a little punk. Pure pop for now people. Sarah played Fitzgeralds last weekend and she blew the roof off. Just unbelievable. There truly is no god if 'The Day We Met' isn't playing on every ipod by the end of the summer. Actually, any song on this CD could be a hit. It's a pleasure to hear 'Come Back to Me' again. I think Sarah played every song from her two records at Fitgeralds and it was easily one of the best and coolest shows I've ever seen. Whether she's wailing louder than her guitar onslaught or purring softly she is in full command. This is ROCK at its very best. Yesterday I heard Nick Lowe on the radio and he said that there is nothing new worth listening to. Someone give this guy a copy of this CD. Hell, Sarah could've been in Rockpile! Nick, do yourself a favor and check this out!

Less successful when it's sentimental (Waylon Jennings' "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys") than when it's wry (Willie Nelson's myth-puncturing "Me and Paul"), this cash-in compilation of previously released cuts was just in time to grab the first platinum record ever awarded a country album. It's not bad, but both Jennings' contemporaneous Dreaming My Dreams and Nelson's Red Headed Stranger are more nuanced tastes of the good-bad-but-not-evil-ol'-boy lifestyle. (Not to mention much of Tompall Glaser's own Outlaw compilation.) This 1996 CD reissue adds nine more tracks from the era as well as a new Jennings-and-Nelson version of Steve Earle's "Nowhere Road." --Rickey Wright

Wanted: The Outlaws.......2007-05-28

I think this reissue of the 70's classic is a perfect example of less being more. I am not certain if any of the new additions make this CD better than the first version. In fact, to be honest, I think the first version is a 5 star classic, while this reissue overall deserves a solid 4 stars. My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys is the best of the bunch here, while the cover of Suspicious Minds is outstanding. I always loved the two songs from Colter, and I think the addition of more from her lessens the overall impact of You Mean to Say and Looking for Blue Eyes. A great CD. The sound here is fantastic.

A real gem and the heart of the outlaw country music movement. The recent re-release with the songs added that didn't make the first album is a nice addition to any collection. Makes you wonder why they didn't include them the first time around. Who knows. If you thought it was great on vinyl you'll love it on cd, just a Fantastic album!

Original Was Better.......2007-02-28

In agreement with most of the reviews here, if you love the 70's country music so-called outlaw movement, you will love the music here, I have the original on a still working 8 track, I was very excited to get an
expandanded edition of this on disk, but to be honest, the longer edition looses something for me, I do "like" Jessi Colter, but as we all know, she does not carry this album, extra tracks included 3 Jessi solos in a row, then 2 Jessi duets with Waylon, that part of the Cd was a bit much for me, but besides that one pont, this is still a great set of tunes and an essential part of country music history to own.

Not bad... but missing something........2007-04-17

This cd definitely has some good points. A great song by Dylan from the opening credits and my favourite, "Dead Flowers" done by Townes Van Zandt. But tremendously written by Jagger and Richards. Funny how my faves are from the start and end of the film. Between these two songs and a rousing "Hotel California" by the Gypsy Kings, I'm happy enough, but oddly, no Creedance. What am I gonna listen to while reaching for that joint I dropped in my lap in the car?

8-miles high track... better in movie........2007-03-19

The song that goes with the Treehorn dream sequence in the film (Kenny Rodgers et al "Tripped on a Cloud/ 8-miles high") was better in the movie, as the version on the cd is a poor original edit, with ackward reverses (and I like reverses, when not halfway through a measure...- for example, the reverse that opens it up is fine, the one three quarters through or so, you see, is not.), half measures chopping up the rhythm and in general either hastily done or naively... I've toyed with the idea of re-editing it myself in a track editor, but I'll just delete it from my player, because I'm lazy. The other tracks are good, but with a few odd ones like the feminist chant song- play this at your next Halloween party/[...]. I have loads of creedence, so not missing that. the Gypsy Kings' "Hotel California" is the best track, much better after first listen as anyone who has watched Lebowski more than a few times will be surprised by the new verses at first. "The Man in Me", if you don't already have it, isn't exactly representative of Dylan's work in large, but is a nice ditty. The Mancini song is filler. Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings" rocks, and I'm glad it was included despite being minutely used in the film. Anyway, it's a good cd all in all, but only for "Hotel California", and "My Mood Swings"... otherwise the Kenny Rodgers' song is bad, should have been re-edited... Probably the reason it was obscure to begin with... The Man in Me is widely available. My advice... wait and find Gypsy Kings elsewhere. Same for Costello and Dylan. Not the best playing mix.

Unique and Wonderful.......2005-09-27

Alejandro Escovedo is a Mexican-American guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter and his music is incredibly difficult to categorize. At times he ranges across country and rock landscapes performing ballads, love songs, haunting melodic studies, and scorching rock and roll. There are moments when his songs are reminiscent of the Eagles in the way they are arranged and in the lyrical structures, yet his is a solo voice that is compelling without the support of harmony. I bought the CD on the strength of songs like "Velvet Guitar" and "Castanets" which were getting a lot of radio airplay in Austin. Over time, I have come to love the rest of this album even more than those two tracks. Alejandro is a fine singer and a very good guitarist, but the strength of this album is his songwriting and arranging. This is one of those recordings that true music fans will appreciate more after a dozen or so playings than they do at first. The music is complex and multi-layered, despite the simplicity of the single voice and guitar that are featured on most tracks.

"These songs are for you..." Alejandro Escovedo closes out his dedication to his sister Alice, in 'A Man Under the Influence', and truth be told, these songs feel as if they are written for and sung to each and everyone of us individually.

Alejandro Escovedo is one songwriter and musician that I was fortunate to run into not too long ago, one who magically manages to seamlessly blend influences from folk, rock & roll, punk, country and texmex music. After learning about him, this album, with all its "dia de los muertos" motif instantly captured my attention: gladly I later found out most of his fans consider it to be his best production to date. To me the 11-song was like a book consisting of two intertwined chapters, somewhat (and two very solid chapters, for the matter). From the opening chord of "Wave", into the contagious "Rosalie", the first chapter is mostly straight-up rock 'n roll with songs that equally borrow from The Beatles in their early years or Los Lobos, while still retaining a uniqueness that makes them refreshing, making you want to listen to them over and over again.

The other chapter of the album shows a far more personal side of Escovedo, with "Across The River", "Velvet Guitar" (a very Tom Petty-like tune), the intimate "Don't Need You" and the closing "About This Love" making you wonder: what on earth are we listening to these days, when a guy like Alejandro Escovedo is far from being well known? Fantastic CD.......2003-08-14

This CD was a CD of the month at my local Public Radio station (KUNI), and Alejandro was featured on "The World Cafe". Because I had heard a few of the songs on the CD...I was both reluctant and hopeful when I bought the CD. I should not have been reluctant. The CD was enough for me to travel to Minneapolis to see Alejandro in concert. A Man Under the Influence is both masterful and approachable. Masterful enough for my father to enjoy it and approachable enough that my stepson requested that I burn Castanets onto a CD for him.

Strangers Almanac first grabs you because it sounds so great. It's filled with dynamic performances that smolder moodily, then flare quickly into firestorms of twangy and soulful guitar rock that fuse Uncle Tupelo with the Stones, the Replacements, with Gram Parsons. But what makes this album essential are the songs of frontman Ryan Adams. Take "Houses On The Hill," about a man merely going through a box of old letters: in just two verses, and to a melody that's the definition of bittersweet, Adams relates a drama more rich in detail than most novels. A MUST for Ryan Adams Aficionados.......2006-12-18

I've never been a Country music fan, more like a Hater, if truth be known, therefore, was hestitant to lay out the big bucks for a Whiskeytown CD. However, since Ryan Adams has never recorded a piece of music that doesn't speak to some part of me, I gritted my teeth and ordered "Strangers Almanac". SA must have set the whole alt country listening community on it's collective ear; I've never heard anything like it. Brilliant, provocative, ground-breaking, genius - this band of musicians play their hearts and souls out. My especial favs are "Yesterday's News" just a heart-twister of a song; "Turn Around" and, for it's originality and grace, "Somebody Remembers The Rose". Just buy it, shut up and listen. Betcha can't stop. (Ryan Adams was 22 and writing songs on the back of takeout pizza boxes at the time)

I discovered Ryan Adams's solo work a few years ago and only recently began listening to his earlier work with Whiskeytown. I enjoy most of his solo albums, some better than others. I saw him in Baltimore at the infamous Meyerhoff show in 2005 where he was absolutely horrendous. However, on Strangers Almanac, he, Caitlin, and the entire band are wonderful.

My first Whiskeytown purchase was Faithless Street, another fantastic album in its own right. At first listen to Strangers Almanac, I didn't think it was as good. However, overtime, I changed my opinion entirely; this one certainly tops Faithless Street.

The low-key, somewhat somber opening track "In Town" conjures images of returning home to a small town after being away for whatever reason (college, military, etc), reconnecting with old friends, and realizing quickly nothing has changed, but you still call it "home". The fiddle on the track definitely sets the mode. "Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart" is a strong honky-tonk influenced broken heart type of song (thus the title ). Here, the slide guitar carries the track. I like this version much more than the bonus track version on Faithless Street.

While the album is dominated by that signature Alt-Country sound, there are some serious rockers on here, like "Yesterday's News" and "Losering". "Everything I Do" has a great blues feel to it. I love the story told in "House on the Hill" - it plays like a great short story that you've read in high school literature class. "Dancing With the Women at the Bar" has the sound and feel of a prequel to "When the Stars Go Blue" on Adam's "Gold" solo disk. If I had to pick one and only one favorite track on the album, it would be "Not Home Anymore", which closes out the album, with its sadness and desperation, building to a climatic crescendo and leaves the listener only wanting more.

There isn't a weak track on the album and the CD never tires. It easily makes it into my rotation every week or so. So, while I may not pay to see Ryan in concert after my Baltimore experience, I will still continue to listen to and love his music, especially when my mood matches his somber and sad songwriting. I highly recommend, you won't be disappointed!

wintertime is the only time.......2006-07-02

this is easily one of the best albums produced in the 20th century. who puts almanac in the title of a record? this really changed my life and taste in music- if it were possible to wear out a CD, then that's what woulda happened the winter I got this back in 97 or 98. problem is, now I just can't listen to it in warm weather, it's incongruous with the attitude the album has to me.

I am a huge fan of alt-country, roots rock, Americana or whatever you wanna call it. This is a classic in the genre. Here are some lesser known albums in the genre that are fantastic.

Heartbreak in widescreen.......2006-04-03

The soaring steel guitar figure which opens "Excuse Me If I Break My Own Heart Tonight" is THE definitive alt.country riff of all time--for me, anyway. It doesn't get any better than this song. Desperation, awe, anguish, love, and a resolve to communicate to the other person that what they're doing is a tremendous mistake--all delivered in the form of a song that, musically, sweeps you up, propells you along, and makes you catch your breath. A fully realized vision. The rest of the album's pretty great, too.

After five years on John Prine's Oh Boy label, Snider joined New Door Records, leaving behind unreleased demo and studio material at Oh Boy. Many artists, unsure of the quality of their outtakes and demos, resist releasing them, as the Beatles did until the Anthology series. Luckily, Snider helped compile this one, a collection of material (including a haiku) as powerful as his finished work. Beginning with a wonderfully loose rendition of his original "Nashville," one hears Snider's renditions of tunes he cowrote that were later recorded and released by his cowriters, including "Barbie Doll" and "Feel Like I'm Falling in Love" (Jack Ingram) and "Deja Blues" (Billy Joe Shaver). "Combover Blues" offers his satirical view of middle age. Ironically, "East Nashville Skyline," an outstanding performance featuring pedal steel legend Lloyd Green, didn't appear on the Snider album that used the song's title. The entire compilation reflects the raw immediacy of a field recording. In fact, that's what's endearing about it. Sometimes, even alongside a great studio performance, an earlier version, rough edges and all, packs a punch all its own. --Rich Kienzle

The Dust Settles Just Fine.......2007-05-25

Normally when a package of this type of music comes together, it's usually when: A] an artist is deceased/dead, B] the record company is trying to milk the artist from an old record contract of product still owed or C] there isn't really anything for the artist to say anymore.

Thankfully, none of those are the case here. In fact, what Todd Snider says and sings here is simply, well, simple yet memorable. Not just the solor material, but the songs with help from Peter Holsapple [dbs], Jack "selling out" Ingram [okay, that wasn't nice], Keith Christopher [The Yayhoos], Craig Wright [Steve Earle], Tommy Womack [duh!]and more.

If this is Todd just dusting off his slew of one-takes and mishaps, then I want more. My favorite Todd Snider yet.

Rejects? No, treasures.......2007-04-08

Todd Snider's PEACE, LOVE AND ANARCHY is a collection of "rarities, b-sides, and demos" (Volume 1). Don't let that fool you...the songs you'll find in here could all have been put on Snider albums (hell, "Nashville" was, and others have been recorded by other artists). These are the kind of songs that just sit around and linger, until they get a record of their own; the result is a cohesive album that doesn't feel pieced together in the least bit.

A sarcastic version of "Nashville" (much more sarcastic than the version that appeared on EAST NASHVILLE SKYLINE) kicks off the album, which ends with the rockin' "Cheatham Street Warehouse." In between you'll find a whole slough of material that features Snider at his storytelling best. There are humorous pieces of course ("Combover Blues"), rockin' pieces ("Barbie Doll"), sad pieces ("Missing You"), thoughtful pieces ("East Nashville Skyline")...hell, there's even a haiku. The spoken-word "From a Rooftop" is a pure delight as well; not to mention the exquisite gospel number "I Will Not Go Hungry" and the Billy Joe Shaver co-write "Deja Blues." Let's face it--there's not a bad song on here. But that's Todd Snider for you.

The fact that most of these songs appear to have come from the EAST NASHVILLE SKYLINE project probably helps with the cohesion; not that this is a bad thing, because that album was arguably one of Snider's best. Really, none of the tracks stands out from the other, which is the way you want it to be. This is simply another great album in a long line of great albums from the incomparable Todd Snider. Let's hope there's a Volume 2 somewhere down the line.

Great as always........2007-04-05

Another great album by Todd Snider--and not the typical outtakes/B sides junk that other people might put on an album like this. Every song is excellent, and there are 2-3 songs here that rank among the best Snider has ever recorded. His version of Stoney is better than anything on the radio. Try to listen to it and not be moved. I dare you.

Fifteen years of recording and alt-country's smartest smartass has never released a live album or a greatest-hits collection (the odds 'n' sods Very Best Of doesn't count). This two-disc set just about settles the score. On disc one, a good slice of Fulks's best songs gets the full roots-rock-weirdo treatment with his longtime road band: the closing triad "Rock Bottom, Pop. 1," "Cigarette State," and "Let's Kills Saturday Night" shows Fulks on top of his skewed country-rock game. On stage, he may distort and twist lines like a psycho-hillbilly jazz singer, but he'll never sing a song the same way twice. On the superior second disc, however, he plays acoustic, showing just how much he learned as a bluegrasser and just home much he's willing to chop and screw those lessons. His deathless folk homage, "In Bristol Town One Bright Day," is transformed into a fractured guitar epic, and his take on Cher's "Believe" (complete with hiccups to mimic the diva's robotic pitch-shifting) is as passionate as it is hilarious. Fulks claims he hates live albums: they're just rip-offs, with weaker versions of old songs, he says. So he adds a good number of unreleased covers and new original songs: "The Bluebirds Are Singing for Me," "On a Real Good Day," and "That's a Good Enough Reason" are especially fine. Yet if you're looking for an accurate document of what a Fulks show is like, you won't find it here. Jokes, banter, and spontaneous crowd interaction are minimized--with the notable exception of an extended intro to "I Like Being Left Alone," a sweet and sour comedy, and the best of his new tunes--and most tracks fade down over applause. As a record maker, Fulks's heart really wasn't into releasing a live set; as a performer, though, his heart, even at its most sarcastic, is never in doubt. One listen to the closing hootenanny stomp (featuring Kelly Hogan on harmonies) of the Carter Family's "Away On the Old Saint Sabbath" is all the evidence you need. --Roy Kasten

Any Fulks is Good Fulks.......2007-07-02

Robbie Fulks is a favorite of mine. His best work, for me, ranks right up there with Hank Sr, George Jones, and Johnny Cash. He's a brilliant songwriter and he has mastered many styles of country music. His best stuff, judging from this set, comes from the studio. No doubt he is great to see live, and this set has many gems, but none approach the genius found in 2005's "Georgia Hard" studio disc.

There is plenty of fun, energy, good pickin', and a few new gems. Surely worth owning, but not a good starting place. Get this to complete your collection, but first be sure to hear Georgia Hard, South Mouth, 13 Hillbilly Giants, Let's Kill Saturday Night, Couples in Trouble, and The Very Best Of. Fulks has never made a bad record, and this one keeps up his winning streak. Still, I cannot wait for him to get back into the studio.

if you are already a fan of robbie fulks then you know that you will love this album. his humor comes through on the first track which is an ode to traveling on the road. he recorded new material which is spliced in with the live tracks. the album is two discs with the first one being electric guitars drums and bass with robbie on his trade mark acoustic and the second disc is all acoustic. this album is a must have for any robbie fulks fan and a great introduction if you havent been fortunate enough to hear him. i had the pleasure of seeing him live and meeting him and the album captures his stage whit and energy.
