If you're a fan of "Americana" music (country, blues, rockabilly based rock), then get this. It's a good cross-section of the great Hightone label.

3 out of 5 stars Good. Could have been even better.......2004-08-15

The idea of making a compilation which showcases the origins of the blues, including street gospel, native African music and (moving) recordings by prison work hands, is very good. And the real "rootsy" part of this collection works really well, too.

But the usually competent compilers at Rhino Records have included early country bluesmen like Lightnin' Hopkins, Robert Pete Williams, and Furry Lewis, but nothing by Charley Patton, the original Delta blues star, and nothing by such 20s/30s luminaries as Son House, Robert Johnson, Ma Rainey, Big Bill Broonzy, or Blind Lemon Jefferson, and that's just not good enough. The music that is here is very good, and the annotation is superb, but they should have either made a collection consisting solely of these genuine "pre-blues" recordings, or thrown at least a couple of songs by Charley Patton and Son House in to make this a more complete and more convincing overview.

3 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Blues to the Very Core.......1999-09-05

We're all pretty sure we knew where the blues came from - the delta, right? The streets of Chicago? But the songs here prove that the blues is the people's music, invented and crafted by working folks. At first my interest was historical, but these songs are so close to the emotional bone that they slip under the skin and stay there. "Russia Let That Moon Alone", for example, is hilarious on first listen, prophestic afterwards. ("Time done change" she sings over and over, until you friggin' believe it!) Or One String, a homeless man who uses a tin can and a one string guitar, but is harsh and melodic at the same time. This is my favorite Blue Masters album, and I own them all. Buy for the education - stay for the fun!

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasure Worth Any Price.......2004-11-07

Dulcie Taylor's third CD continues the excellent pace set by her second set, "Diamond & Glass." "Mirrors & Windows" is a varied set with literate lyrics and moving melodies. While her musical style is quite different, her vocal quality is a kissing cousin to Jackie DeShannon's. The opener, "Blackberry Winter," is a stunning track co-written with John Landau with a churning Byrds-like electric guitar, "You & I are caught in some trouble, feels like we're running for our lives, If we don't stand up & face it together, we can kiss our love goodbye." "Maybe" is also an excellent track with Michael Bellar's B3 Hammond organ playing under Dulcie's stunning vocal and her excellent melody, "I'd wake up tomorrow & do it all again, even if I knew I would lose in the end, sometimes the pleasure is worth any pain, worth any price." I also really like the rocker, "Pillow Like Stone" with its driving beat and the lyric tale of a love triangle, "You lay down in your bed & pray for sleep & you ask the Lord to take from you your need, your burning desire for her & her alone, but your pillow feels like stone." The other tracks on the CD are mellow folk-pop & are equally strong. "Miracle" has an impassioned vocal, "Everybody's looking for a miracle, everybody's trying to catch a dream." "Mirrors & Windows" is an excellent set! Enjoy!
