When John Duffey, singer and mandolin player for the esteemed Washington, D.C., bluegrass band Seldom Scene, died suddenly of a heart attack in 1996, modern bluegrass lost one of its most coruscating and innovative giants. A thrilling tenor singer and dynamic frontman, this suburban Washington son of a professional opera singer is remembered for his delightfully eccentric showmanship and for his expansion of modern bluegrass's repertoire, making the music vital and accessible even to non-Southern urban audiences. This collection captures some vivid highlights from Duffey's four-decade legacy, first with the Country Gentlemen and then with the Scene, which he led from 1971 until his death. Duffey could easily out-traditionalize the traditionalists when he chose, as he does on the Scene's renditions of chestnuts such as the Stanley Brothers' "Let Me Be Your Friend" and Bill Monroe's "Rose of Old Kentucky." But he also had a knack for brilliantly transforming unlikely songs such as J.J. Cale's bluesy "After Midnight," Woody Guthrie's "Philadelphia Lawyer," and the old George Jones ballad "Walk Through This World with Me" into dazzling bluegrass showstoppers. --Bob Allen
Customer Reviews:
Keeping John Duffey's Genius Alive.......2006-08-15
This CD is a retrospective of John Duffey's musical genius; however, I don't agree with the track selections, which tend to focus on John's vocal ability... forgeting his brilliant, irreplaceable mandolin style. A style which is featured in the award winning documentry, "High Lonesome The Story of Bluegrass Music," and in the chapter titled "Four Bluegrass Greats" of Jack Tottle's critically acclaimed mandolin instruction book BLUEGRASS MANDOLIN.
With all this in mind, why would producer Fred Jasper exclude John's stellar mandolin breaks on, "Will The Circle Be Unbroken," from the Country Gentlemen's début and "I Know You Rider" from the Seldom Scene's LIVE AT THE CELLAR DOOR;" certainly, not only fine examples of John's creativity on the mandolin but also of his showmanship... I guess you'd have to ask Fred.
A+.......2006-07-02
I enjoy every track on this CD. It really showcases John's vocal range, and the music selection is splendid.
Duffey! (definitely with the !).......2001-05-16
"Taste" is a difficult term to define... was Duffey! completely tasteless, or did he turn tastelesness into its own taste? I guess if he was good enough for Ralph Stanley (who invited him to add the very high baritone to "Lonesome River" a few years ago), he's good enough for me. One thing is sure, Duffey! was a Presence in bluegrass music, with a one-in-a-million voice, a "what me worry?" mandolin style, and his own very unique view of what is good music. This compilation reminds us just how hard he was to ignore!
It's hard to believe this one-of-a-kind musician is dead. One of the most intense singers and stage personalities of all time; the term 'larger than life' certainly applied. It brings back happy memories of the Red Fox, the Birchmere and various festival stages, watching the big guy with the buzzcut and dentist's shirt -- and wondering what he would do next. These selections are from his work with the Scene as well as the Classic Country Gentlemen reunion. No one can do true country pathos ("Willie Roy", "Pictures from Life's Other Side") like Duffey!, and on classic bluegrass trios ("The Old Hometown") he's in his element. I had always discounted his mandolin work as 'just playing around', but the version of "Tennessee Blues" here was real ear-opener for me. Of course, his signature songs such as After Midnight" are here too. But the absolute high point is an unbelievably powerful duet with Dudley Connell (from the "Dream Scene" album) on "They're at Rest Together". It took Connell's power, both singing and with rhythm guitar, to finally match Duffey!. I guess if you live as intensely as Duffey! you're unlikely to die of old age.

Perhaps more than any singer this side of Elvis, Patsy Cline's legacy has been hashed over time and again by numerous posthumous recordings, most of which are of marginal quality and seldom tell the story properly. This set contains some fine material from the latter part of Cline's career--gorgeous readings of Irving Berlin's "Always" and Hank Williams's "Your Cheatin' Heart" show her aptitude for making standards of both pop and country her own--but it misses the mark by including none of her biggest hits from the era, such as "Crazy," "I Fall to Pieces," and "Sweet Dreams." This collection wins points for truth in advertising--its title reads "Classic," not "Best of"--but approach this one only after you have something more representative of Cline's career--12 Greatest Hits, for example--already in hand. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
Top quality disc.......2006-07-08
This disc whilst missing out on some of Patsy's biggest hits is no worse for that. Its a well thought out selection with the bonus of exceptional remastering. Anyone with more than one Patsy Cline disc in their collection will be know how variable the sound quality can be. This has to be the best I have heard her original recordings sound. A must for any Patsy Cline fan.
Don't Overlook This Gem.......2001-04-04
While the title of this album is "Classic Patsy Cline," it could just as easily have been titled "Greatest Hits, Vol. 2." This release complements "12 Greatest Hits," by including the remainder of Patsy's charted classics which "12 Greatest Hits" omitted: "When I Get Through With You" (#10, 1962), "Imagine That" (#21, 1962), "Heartaches" (#73, 1962), "When You Need A Laugh" (#47, 1963) and "He Called Me Baby" (#23, 1964). It also includes Patsy's 1961 remake of her 1957 #14 Hit, "A Poor Man's Roses." An additional highlight of this set is Patsy's treatment of Irving Berlin's "Always," a true American masterpiece. The sound quality of this CD is exceptional, and the inserts include a couple of rare pictures from her original album cover photo sessions. If "12 Greatest Hits" whet your appetite for the music of Patsy Cline, don't overlook this gem.
a great companion to 12 Greatest Hits.......2000-09-05
Although I don't have this collection, this collection is a must have if you have "12 Greatest Hits" in your collection, but if you have "Patsy Cline Story," I'd recommend "A Portrait of Patsy Cline," which has some of the same songs as this collection. Her interpretations of standards are very well her own and because of her voice, they are made like they were just written for her to begin with. Lots of her interpretations of standards such as "Heartaches," "Always," "I Love You So Much It Hurts," "Half As Much," "Crazy Arms," and "Have You Ever Been Lonely." Minor charted hits such as "When I Get Thru With You," and "He Called Me Baby," are also included. As I said before but I'll say again, this is a must have if you have "12 Greatest Hits" but want more and not for those with "Patsy Cline Story" and want more as there is "A Portrait of Patsy Cline" that serves the same purpose for those with "Story."

Decent but could have been better.......2001-02-12
With less than a handful of vintage "dirty blues" compilations around, it's hard to complain about a bad one. This one may not be bad, but it is merely decent: At under 43 minutes and only 13 tracks there's a real lack of material here. Factual errors (Track 2 "Stew Meat Blues" is incorrect -- it's actually Bessie Smith's "I got what it takes (But it breaks my heart to give it away)" from 1929) and omissions (Track 13 "Artist Unknown" is a rare transcription of Gene Autry) are real flaws. As is the odd inclusion of Light Crust Doughboys' "Pussy, Pussy, Pussy" -- why here?, and why digitize such an awful copy of this 1938 Vocalion single when Rhino/Sony's "Hillbilly Fever! Vol.1" reveals the track in its pristine glory. And whatever happened to Volume 2 anyway? Not bad for twelve bucks, but look first for Mojo Record's "The Copulatin' Blues" or the 2CD "Them Dirty Blues", or the Sony/Columbia "Raunchy Blues: Hot Nuts and Lollypops" for compilations with a better edge.

A series of Willie Nelson concept albums originally rejected by his record company forms the basis for a fascinating anthology. Willie Nelson: A Classic & Unreleased Collection includes Sugar Moon, an unreleased album of Western swing classics recorded with Merle Haggard's band, the Strangers; a would-be sequel, Willie Sings Hank Williams; the likewise unreleased Willie Nelson Live at the Texas Opry House; and unissued outtakes from various sessions, early songwriting demos, plus his very first single. First offered for sale in 1994 on the home-shopping channel QVC, an expanded, annotated version has finally been made available to retail outlets. The set brings to light a treasure trove of Nelson's unreleased work for Atlantic Records, to which Nelson was signed in 1972 by legendary R&B producer Jerry Wexler to launch a new country division. Atlantic only released two Nelson albums, but outtakes from those sessions include such highlights as a boisterous, R&B arrangement of Tillman's "I Gotta Have Something I Ain't Got" powered by Al Green's Memphis Horns and a spirited sprint led by David Bromberg through the swing instrumental, "Under the Double Eagle." The Atlantic legacy also yields the Texas Opry House performance, which would have been a landmark had the label not folded, scuttling release plans. Nelson had just entered his peak years, and he was touring with an all-star band that included fiddler Johnny Gimble, steel guitarist Jimmy Day, and harmonica whiz Mickey Raphael. Nelson is at his best on stage, and the highlight of this show was an impromptu segue from Nelson's "Bloody Mary Morning" into Bob Wills's "Take Me Back to Tulsa" and back again. --Geoffrey Himes
Customer Reviews:
Great Stuff here!.......2005-07-04
The cuts from "Live at the Texas Opry House" are worth the price for this set, especially the "Bloody Mary Morning>Take Me Back to Tulsa>Bloody Mary Morning" (I challenged anyone to sit still while listening to this track!). "Willie Alone" and "Willie Sings Hank Williams" as well as "Atlantic Recordings" make this a great collection of rarities and hard to find sides. HIGHLY recommended! Thanks Willie.
Should be called "Whatever we could get".......1999-12-29
A very mixed bag -- basically what Willie owned the rights to and what they could get cheaply. Usual Rhino nearly-unreadable tiny-type-on-black- background booklet -- good text in the booklet though. His first two singles are very good. Unreleased tracks interesting. One can see why the Hank album was not released -- notes say it was done very quickly with people who were hanging around. Music Hall selections are OK -- a little rough. Like one published review says: "There's no compilatory rationale whatsoever..." Glad I got it but was somewhat let down.
