4 out of 5 stars Dance Hall Crashers-Order Now With Extra Volume.......2000-09-23

This EP is an excellent slice of Dance Hall Crashers ska/pop/punk. The opening track 'She's Trying' has a catchy hook that complements the sweet vocal harmonies of Karina and Elyse. The story is sweet too. 'Lady Luck' follows and it's a fast mover with a twist of retro. 'All Mine' is a nice love song that focuses on vocals(and they are very good indeed.) 'Truly Comfortable' and the acoustic 'Shelly'(this song may get on some nerves due to the way the vocals are mixed). 'I Did It For the Toys'ends the audio part of the CD on a punky perverse note. There are four videos for different songs along with pictures of the band. Get this CD for it is a good amount of music for the money.

5 out of 5 stars One word...AWESOME.......1998-10-09

This whole CD is great...as worthy as anything DHC has ever done. The last song "I Did It For The Toys" is a neo-Christmas carol for the 90s...in its sick, perverse, and hilariously twisted way. The remix of "All Mine" and the Acoustic Version of "Shelley" add new dimensions to familiar songs. And all I can say about "She's Trying" is...sheer perfection!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for fans of good, fun music!!.......1998-09-16

As a DHC fan, I may have a biased opinion, but there is little doubt in my mind that if you don't own anything by DHC, you are missing out. A blend of ska/pop/punk, DHC's music, lyrics and tight harmonies by the female lead singers will simply blow you away! A must have for anybody who likes good, fun music. The four videos and candid photos of the group are an added bonus for fans of the group.

4 out of 5 stars The man's got the blues and has made me so very happy!.......2004-04-19

Okay, David Clayton-Thomas. Toronto bad-boy who joined Blood, Sweat and Tears and helped usher in an era of "big-band rock (BS&T, Chicago, If, Ides of March, etc.) that today deserves the obscurity it's been awarded. End of story....NOT. Thing is, Clayton-Thomas was and is one helluva singer with a healthy respect for the blues tradition, and finally there's an album, this one, that shows that to the fullest.

Backed by a POWERFUL group of musicians, Clayton-Thomas offers up 10 passionate, meaty performances of songs from the likes of Albert King, Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Percy Mayfield and himself as well. He sets himself a mighty task--it takes guts to cover "Drown In My Own Tears," which BELONGS to Ray Charles, but ol' Dave comes darn close to making it HIS as well. But the overall impression you get from this album is that Clayton-Thomas was just getting together to sing songs that he loves, not trying to out-do the original artists, and he sounds as at home with the material as he can be. This is as good a blues disc as you'll ever hear and if you're willing to get over any preconceptions you have before you hear it, David Clayton-Thomas singin' the blues might just make your day!

4 out of 5 stars Nice to Hear Clayton-Thomas' voice again.......1999-02-26

David Clayton-Thomas, the legendary frontman of Blood, Sweat, and Tears, releases his first album of new material since about 1980,and his first solo release since 1977's "Clayton." The tracks consist of blues standards and some original blues tunes that grew out of a jam session. My favorite track is the new original tune "We Were The Children" an upbeat tune about social upheaval. His recordings of Blues Standards are excellent, especiailly on "Hoochie Coochie Man," and "Woman Across The River," There are a couple of weaker tracks, especially rehashes of his BS&T tune "Lucretia MacEvil" and the oft recorded (four times?) "Drown in My Own Tears." I still think the album is a must for BS&T fans.

4 out of 5 stars David Clayton-Thomas gets down to basics.......1998-12-05

Blood, Sweat & Tears frontman David Clatyon-Thomas' first solo release in 20 years takes a decidedly different turn. With "Blue Plate Special", DCT gets back to the music of his youth, his musical roots - straight ahead blues.

On the opening cut, "Too Many Dirty Dishes", David shows right away how comfortable he is with this material. There are some other excellent covers as well, "Hoochie Koochie Man" and "Hard Times" Some of the best material, though is David's own rocker "Wish the World Would Come To Memphis" and "Suzy Got Her Big Hair On".

Two cuts, "Drown in My Own Tears" and "Lucretia MacEvil", both have been recorded before by Clayton-Thomas and should have been left alone.

Let me be clear on this, this is not a Blood, Sweat & Tears album. You won't find the rich horns on most cuts or the pop hooks. If you are looking for BS&T sound, then by BS&T's collection "What Goes Up". But for David Clayton-Thomas singing the blues, then this is the CD to get.

5 out of 5 stars Good way to remember Blood, Sweet and Tears one of the best.......1998-07-10

As vocal for soul, is seemless.

3 out of 5 stars A Night Out with Blue Plate Special!.......2004-06-17

When I heard "Night Out" and "Work That Skirt" I was very impresed. So I bought this album. And I can tell you it is nothing special.

5 out of 5 stars The Best - but reissue the original.......2003-04-15

Sure I'm prejudice because Blue Plate Special came right out of my hometown. Nevertheless, a long stint at The Derby honed this band into - hands down - the best neo-swing band of the last 15 years. Blue Plate Special is not a converted rock or ska band that chose to take advantage of the neo-swing movement. They are firmly based in jazz. This album captures that band at the height of their talents, before other opportunities shattered the line-up. That is, most of the album does that. Anthony Parcheesi replaces Fred Stuart's original vocals on the first two songs. Stuart had left the band between the original recording sessions and the albums wide release. Parcheesi has a pleasant voice but can't match Stuart's ability to tell a story with his vocals. I haven't heard of the band in a while, so it may have finally given in. If you want to hear the best the neo-swing movement had to offer, get this album...but they should reissue the original version.

5 out of 5 stars a must for any swing-jazz collection.......2002-12-18

I have tasted a number of swing albums, each with a style different from any other. The one I keep coming back to over and over is " A Night Out With Blue Plate Special "; You will see how crisp and tight the brass section is, while the lead vocal captivates you, and keeps you fixed on the melody. Like a good buffet, there is alot to select from, with no repeated style from one selection to another. With each song, there is a new flavor to get your attention.
"Night out", the first song grabs your attention immediatly, where the lead vocals are clearly in control of the song and keep your attention to the end.
The brass arrangment in " a message from paul drake " is very dramatic and involved.
"Tango of sorrow" shows how very talented the group is when going into a style few can show accomplishment in.
The icing on the cake for this album is "Night in Havana" where you are drawn into a night club in old Havana watching the dancers move to the rhumba in a smokey room, with the taste of gin, and the heat of the tropics. It makes you wish you could have lived in that time, and experienced a life style long gone.
I was very fortunate to have found this album; dont pass it up.

This is an awesome band but this is not an awesome album. There are some tracks that show the brilliance of this group but the whole album leaves me a little flat. Mind you it is hard to reproduce the brilliance of California Project every time. Worth having and definitely worth listening to but not their best.

5 out of 5 stars Canada's best country band hits the jackpot here!.......2000-03-09

Canada's Prairie Oyster is country music's jewel of the Great White North - an extremely affable band with outstanding songwriting and first-rate musicianship. It is a crime that this band has been virtually ignored in the 50 States, and they are much deserving of radio airplay. This album is a treasure from the uptempo honky-tonkin' "She Won't Be Lonely Long" straight through to the Roy Orbison-flavored "Into the Blue." Prairie Oyster does an excellent, Cajun-flavored cover of Roger Miller's classic "In the Summertime (You Don't Want My Love"). The band has won critical and commercial acclaim in their native land, and this album demonstrates this, too! Though they are a contemporary country band, they are heavily steeped in traditional sounds: honky tonk, Western swing, blues, folk, rockabilly, even R&B..... Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars aint nothin like the real thing.......2000-12-15

These guys are a perfect example of why neo-swing was such a flash in the pan. They're all style--a style they borrowed from Royal Crown Review--and no substance. There was a time a couple years ago when you could grab any bunch of dorks out of the band practice room of the local junior college music department, throw a zoot suit on 'em and get a gig at the hippest clubs on the west coast, but those days are gone, thank gawd. One listen to this disc will tell you that, like virtually all the neo-swingers, these guys have never listened to the real stuff, but merely borrowed their sound and gangster noir imagery lock, stock and barrel from Royal Crown Review. Sadly, they don't come close to measuring up to RCR, especially in terms of the rhythm section and vocals. Blue Plate Special are a great example of how a potentially great idea--updating vintage swing--turned into a worthless fad.

      5 out of 5 stars Out-damn-standing!!.......1999-08-17

I'll just say this; my CD got scratched, and I bought another one even though only one song was ruined. Did I mention I'm broke?

5 out of 5 stars If you want to know why swing is back, listen here.......1999-08-05

Blue Plate Special is the archetypal neo-swing group, a fine example of why swing has experienced a renaissance in the past few years. The guys work exceptionally well as a group, no one individual dominating but all working together to produce an outstanding sound. One thing which differentiates neo-swing from the past is the use of song lyrics to tell more intricate stories than we heard from such songwriters as Frank Loesser and Johnny Mercer. To illustrate, listen to the title cut from this CD. Perhaps, it is the influence of country & western music at work. The other selections presented here are also outstanding, making it very difficult to pick a favorite. Having grown up watching "Perry Mason" on TV, I immensely enjoy "A Message for Paul Drake". Both of the latin tunes, "Tango of Sorrow" and "A Night in Havana" also deserve mention. However, special recognition should be given "Evening". The only other recording I have of it is the one done in 1936 by Count Basie with vocal by Jimmy Rushing. Taken at a tempo which suits the tune better than that in the Basie version, this is probably the highlight of the entire CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is GREAT MUSIC.......1999-07-20

One simple word could describe this album. Magnificent! Not one mediocre song. Just listen to A Night in Havana and Tango of Sorrow, and get blown away. I just wish they had a new album I could buy today.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD !.......1999-05-03

Very upbeat songs, and good storylines with the songs. If you like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, you will like these guys.
