Album Description
It is mighty, mighty hard to believe that such a monumental figure in country music as Stonewall Jackson doesn't have a bona fide collection of his hits currently available. But then, nothing ever came easy for Stonewall; his dad died before he was born, he ran away from home when he was 14, and finally made it to Music City in 1956 at age 24, just as the Nashville Sound was taking hold with its strings and choruses. Which, of course, was 100% opposite from the kind of hardcore, honky tonk country that Stonewall played, but he stuck to his guns, and had a bunch of hits nonetheless, which is a real testament to how good this guy was. You'll find the top two dozen here, together with a revealing essay by Colin Escott containing quotes from the man himself. A proud Collectors' Choice Music exclusive!
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2006-10-03
I bought this CD based on two songs on a Columbia collection. I am so glad I did. This is one of the greatest honky tonk CDs there is. Stonewall Jackson is easily one of the greatest country singers of all time, yet he seems to have been forgotten. What a voice and what great songs. These songs are amazing. I can't recommend this CD enough. Fantastic!
classic country music at it's best.......2006-02-13
This cd is the best collection of songs from Stonewall Jackson that I have found. It comes with historical information about the artist and his music. It even shows the date that each song was recorded and what position the song reached on the charts. This cd is a must have for classic country music fans. Stonewall Jackson was overlooked and underrated in my opinion. In my opinion, he should be rated as one of the great legends of country music. This cd definately gets a 5 star rating from me.
Love it.......2005-09-01
If you like Country Music (real country music), this album is a "must-have". Noone sang a song like Stonewall; and it's doubtful anyone ever will. Not a bad song on the CD, but a few more songs would always be appreciated. It's sad that this artist isn't more appreciated today, and as with many great pioneers and stylists of Country Music, he's overlooked. If you like Stonewall, I suggest you also check out Mel Street, who seemed to be greatly influenced by Jackson and often imitated his singing approach. In any case, you owe it to yourself to purchase this one.
Great Stonewall Jackson CD.......2005-08-10
This is by far one of the most complete cd's covering this great country artist.I only had a few regrets that a couple songs were not on but all of his hits are there and in excellent sound quality.
Thoroughly enjoyable compilation from Collectors' Choice.......2004-07-26
Check out the alternative and you are sure to agree that the best value for your money is this 24 song collection from Collectors' Choice. Here you will find just about everything you would want from one of the most beloved figures in country music history. Stonewall Jackson was a major player during the heyday of country music. You will find all of Stonewall Jacksons biggest hits here including the 1959 classic "Waterloo" as well as "B.J. the D.J." "A Wound That Time Can't Erase" and "Stamp Out Loneliness". You will also discover a number of other gems that may not have been quite as successful on the charts but are every bit as good. Of these I particularly enjoyed "Mary Don't You Weep", an adaptation of an ancient black spiritual, "One Look At Heaven" and one of his last charted singles "Torn From The Pages Of Life" from the summer of 1972. Also included are familiar tunes like "I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water" and of course Jacksons last big chart hit "Me and You and A Dog Named Boo". Stonewall was more or less forced to record that song and despite its success it proved to be the beginning of the end of his long time association with Columbia Records.
Though it has been more than 30 years since Stonewall Jackson had a hit single, he continues to make live appearances today. In addition, he has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1956. This collection is a "must" for serious collectors of country music. It is miles ahead of Columbia's "American Originals" offering. The remastering job is superb and the two pages of included liner notes are OK but nothing special. Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
A Fabulous entertainer with a wonderful voice.......2007-01-19
I purchased this album and it was the 2nd of his purchases. The first one just made me want more. This is a fantastic album and the songs are great. He is a handsome man with a sexy voice that rates right up there with Elvis Presley. If I had the money I would buy the larger song collection for sale on here. I listen to his records EVERY DAY and never tire of hearing that voice singing to me. I did happen to catch one of his personal appearances on the Wilburn brothers show on the RFD dish channel, it was a rare treat to be able to see him perform. Thanks Amazon for shipping my cd's so promptly. I am surely enjoying them.
A different sound.......2005-11-19
I am not quite sure how to rate this album. Stonewall Jackson had one of the most distinct voices and sounds in country music, so I'm not sure why the change here to the so called "outlaw" movement of the early-mid '70's. Stonewall does not sound comfortable at all with this sound and you can hear it readily in his music; especially the remakes of songs in his catalog. Now, with that said, there are some real gems here, to include: "The Pint of No Return", "Alcohol of Fame", and "Listening to Johnny Paycheck". I am happy this was a short-lived stunt for Stonewall, as it just does not seem natural (to the listener or the performer). Still, all in all, if you are a real diehard fan of Stonewall Jackson, this is a must for your collection.
realcountryfan.......2004-12-03
this is the 1970s outlaw sound.different than stonewalls old honkey-tonk sound.he should have kept this sound, its up there with waylon, hank jr,david allan coe, etc.great cd.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2006-05-14
Bear Family continues to outdo itself with these immense boxsets. I have been a fan of Stonewall Jackson since I can remember, and the numbers included here I have not heard since I had a turntable and 33's. The sound presented here is superb...but what else would you expect. Sure, these box sets are pricy, but when you consider the incredible sound, detailed large booklet detailing the discography and artists' career, and the large number of songs, it is worth your money. This box set covers the earlier years of Stonewall, when he was topping the charts regularly. The better-known songs are included here (including "Waterloo", "Why I'm Walkin'", and "Dont Be Angry"), but there's also a whole catalog of early releases that you may not have heard, but will definately enjoy. The only criticism I have is that I cant decide which of the 4 discs I enjoy listening to the most! A great Box-set....get it. A+

One of the all-time country greats who is often overlooked these days. In this cd, you get a sampling of the hits and classic album cuts from the 50's and early 60's. Stonewalls music is "real country" at it's very best.

Stonewall Jacksons early recordings complete........2004-12-13
Ignore Maheen`s review, that is not about the music, but negative things about Amazon!
This is an amazing set of great music,in the great way Bear family records produces it.
It all starts in 1956 just after Stonewall was singin at The Grand Ole Opry.
He was the first countrysinger on The Grand Ole Opry without a hit before he entered the stage.
Buy this and the next box Bear Family presumably will release later, you will not regret.
For crying out loud amazon!.......2004-11-20
Look, will you please include the track listings for all 4 discs!!! Amazon you must have a better service than this. Stonewall Jackson is one of the greatest that ever came out from Nashville and he has one of the best country legends ever. One song I do want to find out whether it is included on this set is called B.J. the D.J. so amazon please! list the track listings and don't keep us in suspense!!!

Customer Reviews:
Not great at all.......2004-09-21
I ordered this cd and what a disapointment. Having been a Stonewall Jackson for a long time, I could not believe the
change of voice. His voice at it's best was when he recorded
"Wild, wild wind" and "A wound time can't erase". No one
could even come close to this. "Thirty links of chain" one
of my favourites to this day is of immense quality. Too bad
I don't have it on cd. I have seen him on stage just once in
my life and enjoyed his performance.
Real countrymusic,but too short........2004-08-06
This cd got all the greats by Stonewall Jackson.I gave it 3 out of 5,it could have 20 more songs.
Why are the record company so cheap?
A big 4 cdbox is being released by Bear Family Records in the nearest future.Christmas is coming early this year.
Memories.......2000-12-21
35 yrs. ago I had the pleasure of opening Stonewall's show up as a member of a back up band. I have been hunting for this CD/Tape for years as I have lost the one I had. It was great to find out that ALL the oldies are available thru you. The best country song ever sung is "Don't be Angry". I sang it at my own wedding 22 yrs. ago!
Stonewall and Amazon both number 1.......2000-08-28
Stonewall Jackson (who is still preforming) sings some of best country music ever and my three personal favorites on this cassette are: "Life to Go, A Wound Time Can't erase and Leona".
I would like to find a double CD or a collection with all of his music as I purchased a vinyl many years ago of "Stonewall Jackson Greatest Hits" which had the song "Showboat" on it with some others missing from this cassette. Again, 5 stars to both Stonewall and Amazon on this one!

availability.......2003-06-22
I didn't buy any of these albums yet but with the reviews I may not. However, I like the prices very much but there are so few songs on them. Re:Harry King from Springfield, Missouri United States - I purchased a Stonewall Jackson CD The Best of Stonewall Jackson. It's a collectors choice and it is great. Has 24 songs of which Old Showboat is on it. ... I didn't think bad with that many hits. They sound original to me. ...
Disappointed.......2003-03-18
I'm a Stonewall Jackson fan, but can't find his true blue music anywhere. Why doesn't someone release some of his ole originals. Old Showboat is greatly missed.
Goofed Again.......2002-05-23
This CD had no sound samples so I ordered it hoping it was the original recordings. It isnt. The "Classic Country" CD has the original recordings but was not avialable so I gambled on this one. So why not just order the other available CD's? THese two have "BJ the DJ' on them and the others don't. Stonewall's later recordings of his hits don't sound that bad but "BJ the DJ" doesn't sound like the 1959 version. THis was my second go round as I ordered a cassette version of "20 Greatest Hits" last year and it was worse than this. So, if you want to hear Stonewall sing a wide selection of songs from his career at a modest price then this CD would do if you aren't looking for the original recordings.
