Australian songbird Sherrié Austin made a splash with her first U.S. single, the unstoppably catchy 1997 country-rocker "Lucky in Love." She returns with this sophomore release, which is spunky and likeable enough to follow in the multiplatinum footsteps of the Dixie Chicks and Deana Carter. Like Carter, Austin focuses on everyday moments of happiness (and occasionally puzzlement) that lend her songs an appealingly down-to-earth quality. On the strength of tracks such as "Never Been Kissed" and "Little Bird," Austin may wind up a very big star. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:
Very good show which I hadn't heard of..........2007-05-13
I was very into theatre in high school and college and thought I was up on most musicals, but had never heard of this show until recently. It's comprised of three short stories which were adapted into the musical format. The first two stories are tied together very well, although the last seems tacked on. But the songs are catchy and it's fairly easy to figure out what's happening simply by listening to the songs. There are two songs which are tied for my favoritism: "It's a Fish" from Adam and Eve and "You Are Not Real" from Passionella. Check it out.
THE APPLE TREE (1966 ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST).......2007-04-10
IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I WENT TO THE REVIVAL OF THE APPLE TREE ON BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY AND LOVED THE SCORE BUT THERE WASN'T A SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SO I PURCHASED THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!
I still remember these songs after 40 years.......2006-11-05
I saw this show on the stage when it first ran, and have never forgotten it. The key to a good Broadway show is this question: Are you humming the songs when you leave the theatre? In the case of The Apple Tree, the answer is a resounding "Yes." I have been waiting 40 years for this show to be revived, and I have tickets for the revival opening in December at the Roundabout. I hope not to be disappointed, for the trio of Barbara Harris, a very young Alan Alda, and the late Larry Blyden were terrific. The three-part concept can be jarring because just when you're getting into the story, it ends -- but just enjoy the kind of songs they just don't write anymore.
Really 2.5.......2006-07-25
SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. "Lady and Tiger" is short and boring. And "Passionella" is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is nice. Favorite Song: "Its A Fish"
Boring material that you forget very easily.......2006-06-29
According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It's composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, "The Lady or the Tiger?" contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, "Passionella", contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as "three moldy figs". I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

Good 2nd Album.......2007-06-01
This album is a strong 4 stars. I didn't give it 5 because it's not quite as awesome as words. It doesn't have the same amount of punch, shading more toward the sweet and cute. Like Words, this album is a lot about love. Notable songs:
Never Been Kissed - the first track, it's bouncy and kind of sassy, has nice drums.
All the Love a Heart Can Hold - uptempo with good lyrics, especially the chorus, which includes a phrase, "emotion overflowing in my soul." Good word picture.
Dreaming Out Loud - rather autobiographical, is about a girl/young woman with dreams of being a renowned performer. Sticks in the head.
Love in the Real World - also sticks in the head, is about a young couple who get married and hot romance becomes the everyday stuff of mortgage, children, bills, etc.
All That Matters - uptempo, energetic
Don't Cage This "Bird".......2007-04-13
On Love In the Real World, Sherrie Austin is an enchanting vocalist who displays just the right amount of spunk. Particularly on the hit single "Never Been Kissed," the vocals are good, but the attitude sells it- that's the hallmark of this CD. Its cute and sassy, but not too sweet. "Little Bird," "Good Love Comin' On," "Dreaming Out Loud," and "All That Matters" are in the same vein: lively, spirited, romantic. Her voice really shines on the ballad "That's No Way...," and "Wish" typifies the album, ultimately about longing for love, tasteful, appealing to non-country fans. Sherrie is fresh like other young artists of this era, Lila McCan and Jessica Andrews. The lack of vocal histrionics is refreshing; she's not forced to emulate anyone.
I think this is good quality pop/country. Some have complained that it is too recycled, too polished, and Sherrie uses the phrase "very pop, perky and cutesey" on her website to describe her music in this era. You can definitely hear the potential for a mature, confident artist. Don't compare this with the raw-edged emotion of more traditional country/bluegrass women. This fits a different catagory, and it stands well on its own. Sherrie only needs to break free of industry confines. This is a well conceived record with a catchy appeal; it isn't as fiery or passionate as I'd like, but as I've stated, the potential is there. This beautiful Aussie singer-actress has signed to a new label, and its hard to see why she's not a bigger star. She has all the necessary qualities.
The Greatest Female Country CD EVER.......2004-10-31
I cannot overstate how good this CD is. Sherrie Austin is without question the greatest female country singer out there today (In fact, no one is close),and this is her best. Songs like "Dreaming Out Loud", "All The Matters", and "Little Bird", are country classics, and there is not ONE SONG on this CD that is LESS then 10/10. There are only two CD's that come close: Sherrie's "Words" and Deanna Carter's "Did I Shave My Legs For This?".
The dirty secret out there is this woman cannot get airtime on Great American Country, and little on CMT. It makes no sense to me, except for the fact that quality country music is not supported these days I am a Sherrie completist, who believes that for EXCEPT for George Strait (She is the equal of Tracy Lawrence), that this is today's finest singer. If you get this CD, you will fall in love with her, and have to get the entire collection.
The Best Female Country Singer Today.......2004-02-21
This CD which is actually her THIRD (Yes there is a CD before "Words" titled "Colourhaus" which I do have and is extremely rare, and I will never sell (So please don't ask)), is her best. Songs such as "All That Matters", "Little Bird", "Dreaming Out Loud" (That song sounds very autobiographical), "Never Been Kissed", "Sarah", and "That's No Way To Break A Heart" (Ok, ok that song is on "Words" as well, but why quibble?) are all 10's on a scale of 1 to 10, and the rest are not far behind. Sad to say, I just lost this CD, but I just went out and ordered the Import version from Amazon so I can get the two extra tracks "Favorite Waste Of Time" and "Tell Me Everything". Sherrie is simply the best female country singer today hands down, and she NEVER gets enough airplay, either on the radio or CMT. It is sad when you think that to get REAL country music, you have to think AUSTRALIA (Sherrie is Australian) instead of NASHVILLE, but George Strait and Alan Jackson said it best in "Murder On Music Row" about the state of Nashville today (Listen and you will understand what is going on). If you like her at ALL, you need to get this CD, and ("Words" as well), they are in my top five CD's of the 90's (Along With Shania Twain's "The Woman In Me", Toby Keith's "How Do You Like Me Now?" and George Strait's "Pure Country"). This is an incredible CD, well worth the money. PS: "Streets Of Heaven" is the best CD of the past two years (Worth The money as well).
The Only Country Artist Worth Listening To.......2004-02-15
This was Sherrie's best CD until the release of her latest,Streets Of Heaven.
If you don't have this yet get it today don't delay.
Every song is a winner.
This CD should have made Sherrie a household name and been a million seller but once again radio dropped the ball and ignored the best artist out there.Gimme a break.
Even though I could rave about every song let me just say Never Been Kissed is a winner as well as Little Bird. All That Matters may be Sherrie's best song as you will listen to it constantly!
You can never go wrong with a Sherrie CD.

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful melody but lacks variety.......2005-04-11
Being Julia OST has a beautiful main melody which occurs over and over again throughout the tracks. I especially like "Curtain Up" and "Quite Alone". However, Being Julia OST doesn't have other strong melody to show along side with the main melody which seems a little too simple for a complete album. The movie is great too. Annette Bening's performance is outstanding.

One stop on the road to immortality.......2006-11-19
This is a more than competent CD transfer of acoustic recordings of Sir Nigel Playfair's legendary 1920s revivals of The Beggar's Opera and its sequel Polly. Quite sufficiemt to show why the Beggar;s Opera production, meant to fill a few weeks' gap at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, ran for three years. And while Gay's sequel was like most sequels, not up to the original, this recording is the only source for the second-best ballad opera.
Must Stop Ordering When Drinking - Or Maybe I Got Foxed.......2006-09-02
Right. Can't remember what state of sobriety I was in when I ordered this cd and I may have missed some key clues about its nature. But I was so excited to find anything claiming to relate to Gay's "Polly" (which otherwise seems to have completely disappeared after it was censored in the 18th century - even internet wise) that I bought this cd. Turns out it is a cd version of some music originally recorded in the early 1920's. It is moderately interesting even for someone who is not primarily interested in antigue recordings (aka "scratchy records") because the style may be closer to that of the original performance. (There is no reason to think that common tastes were better in the 18th century than in 1920.) It is certainly different than contemporaneous performances of BO.
Don't mean to be sexist - which I am - but the duets, choreses and male performances seem to be less antigue than the soprano pieces. The broads are simply squeaky. Something to do with frequency loss in early recordings, I expect. On the other hand, the bass songs are equally abrasive and archaic.
Even the notes about "Polly" in this cd are disappointing. No mention of the history of "Polly", no mention of the source for the music. Try googling for a link for Gay and Polly. If you find one, be sure to post - I would love to know.
Unless you are an academic involved with some of the most obscure corners of the history of recorded music, I would forget this one. Instead, root for someone to find and record Gay's Polly. And buy a more modern interpretation of the Beggar's Opera. I have certainly heard antique recordings restored more vibrantly than this cd - but I would think that depends to a large extent on the quality of what you have to start with.
The only reason I gave it 2 stars (for some reason, Amazon refuses to record my change from 1 to 2 stars; but that is computers for you) instead of 1 was because of I love the melodies of the songs so much. But I will also admit that it is possible that Gay have been lucky that Polly was suppressed - the melodies and lyrics are not nearly as good as BO. On the other hand, this cd is so antique that is an unfair basis for judgment, But what the H!
