One decade's oddity is the next decade's institution. Or at least that's been the case with Lyle Lovett. The Lone Star eccentric emerged in the 1980s ostensibly as a country artist, but it became clear pretty quickly that a Southern accent and a pair of cowboy boots does not a Nashville favorite make. In time, however, Lovett's free-range brand of swing, blues, gospel, folk, and whatever has been embraced by a coterie of fans who have as little interest in genres as their hero. Live in Texas is something of a valentine to them--as well as an in-concert 13-year career summary for the uninitiated. Rife with live staples ("That's Right," "If I Had a Boat," "She's No Lady," and "North Dakota," which features an appearance by Rickie Lee Jones), the 14-track showcase certifies what loyalists have known for years: Lovett is one of the best bandleaders around. He and his crack crew get big and get small as needed, punching up uptempo numbers with brass or stripping down to the bare essentials for ballads. Taking it all in, one can't help concluding there's absolutely nothing odd about that. --Steven Stolder

Recorded on the Dallas date of the 2003 Summer Sanitarium arena tour, with Metallica, Limp Bizkit, et. al, Live in Texas is a concise, no-frills two-disc DVD/CD souvenir of the muscular Linkin Park live experience. 5.1 Surround Sound captures every nuance of Brad Delson's explosive guitar, the incendiary turntable flourishes of DJ Joseph Hahn, and the interplay between MC Mike Shinoda and singer Chester Bennington (although the audience sing-along on "Numb" gets lost across the barricades), as the sextet runs through a tight set of selections drawn exclusively from its bestsellers Hybrid Theory and Meteora, with the big hits ("Crawling," "In the End") programmed toward the climax. Casual fans may grumble about the absence of extras--there's no backstage-with-the-band documentary or viewing angle options, no previously unreleased songs--but hardcore devotees (who get plenty of face time on the DVD) should appreciate the opportunity to revisit the thrills of Linkin Park in concert whenever they wish. --Kurt B. Reighley
Customer Reviews:
better than the studio versions.......2006-08-16
on the CD, i prefer the live versions to the studio versions. they have much more energy and excitement. the DVD is great too. it has all of their biggest hits plus some fan-favorite album tracks. i love how they get the audience involved. my only complaint is that there are a few times when mike and chester say some cuss words that get edited out, and there isnt an un-edited version available. for some reason linkin park wont have bad words in their music, or in this case, dvd's. also, the dvd is sorely lacking of any features, such as back-stage interviews or anything. its still a great CD/DVD combo though, and i highly recommend it to any LP fan.
DVD was good, but CD songs mediocre.......2006-07-05
I thought getting a dvd of the Texas concert along with a cd of 12 songs was a good deal compared to buying one cd for around $15. The dvd met my expectations of seeing LP in a live concert. However, the songs chosen from the concert that were recorded onto the music cd were mediocre and lacking in song quality, especially when compared to the original songs recorded in the studio.
The music cd can be a nice introduction to people who have never heard of LP before, but to more die-hard fans and listeners who own the studio-produced songs, the song quality of the cd songs can make you wince. Chester Bennington's voice (aka Chazzy Chaz) is sometimes too quiet/drowned-out in some songs. I wouldn't burn these songs onto my mp3 player. Instead, just buy the songs you like individually, the studio-produced versions.
Something I found kinda weird and ironic was that the last song they chose to record onto the cd was "One Step Closer", which had Chaz screaming into the mic "SHUT UP, SHUT UP" over and over near the end of the song. He tried making the audience say it with him lol. Overall, I wouldn't buy this dvd & cd purchase unless it was on sale for $10 or less.
Almost Like A greatest Hits Album!.......2006-07-03
I use to like this band. That was before I got into metal. I don't really listen to any rapcore anymore but LP did have some good songs. In fact, this live album has most of their best songs on it, it's just missing one or two I think. If you want to get the best of Linkin Park, then this set is for you.
The best live cd ever!.......2006-06-06
Of all I have heard live, this is the best! The band is so good they do not sound too different from the radio! Ture talent from a hard rock/ hip hop band! And the songs that they sing are the best of all songs they have done!

Please don't write reviews on stuff you hate. Linkin Park is very talented and if you can't see that then I feel sorry for you.

Lyle leads a great band.......2007-06-18
This is a great live album. Lovett has a fantastic band of about 16-18 people, and this album really showcases the talent that he has surrounded himself with.
The recording is top-notch, and the songs are all good. I have seen him live, and this is an excellent representation of what you'll get... You won't be disappointed.
Great live recording.......2006-11-10
If you've been to one of the concerts, you'll love this live recording. A great companion to Lyle Lovett and His Large Band studio album (I still have that on cassette)

Captures Great Energy of LIVE Peformance :).......2006-07-31
After seeing Lyle in Oshkosh, Wisconsin last month, I find that I have been playing LL's live album in the car over and over remembering what a professional performance I saw at Leach Amphitheatre. It was a warm night, with temps in the high 80's with a half-moon rising over the nearby river, much like a Texas night. Lyle played for two and a-half hours. It was a great and relaxing time for my wife Debbie and I. A perfect evening. WOW!
Best Lyle Lovett to date, with most of his signature songs........2006-05-09
If you're unitiated, your first thoughts tend to be to think of Lyle Lovett as primarily a Country Music guy with odd hair and who married Julia Roberts - that's from a random sampling of my younger musician friends. Then, I pop in Lyle Lovett Live in Texas, and let them listen to "Penguins," the opening track. The tight drums, horn section and bass guitar work always gets them frowning, and saying "THAT'S Lyle Lovett???" followed by a series of comparisons of this music to some music they already like.
Then comes layer after layer of one genre of music after another, including a Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys style, "That's Right, You're Not From Texas." He has enough of his Big Band Texas swing music to keep your feet tapping and a couple of slower ones for you to catch your breath and get a drink of water. His two blues duets with the dynamic Francine Reed are almost worth the price of the CD. One of my friends, a pro blues sax man almost choked trying to do the sax solo in "Wild Women Never Get the Blues." Again, if you pop this CD into your player and select this song, no one would guess it's Lyle Lovett. Every musician is absolutely top notch. If your friends are musicians, like mine are, they will want this CD just to lift rifts off of, and to keep themselves insprired. I got two of them - one for the house and one for road trips. You probably will, too.

Great Gig.......2007-04-04
The Commander and his Airmen were my favourite rockin' country band of the 70's and this album shows them at their very best. Since there is no definitive Commander "Best Of" album out there, (the "Too Much Fun" album is probably the best but still less than satisfactory), Cody fans should just go out and get all their early albums (i.e. those albums released prior to 1976). Start with "Lost in the Ozone", "Hot Licks, Cold Steel and Trucker's Favourites", this Armadillo live album (and its companion piece "Sleazy Roadhouse Stories" - the rest of the Armadillo concert) and then go from there. The Airmen were not just a bunch of stoned, drunk musos but instrumentalists (and songwriters) of the highest quality. Many are still making a living from music over 30 years later. They may seem rough and ready on the albums but that was the effect they sought. Listen closely and you will hear superb musicianship, arranging, singing and songwriting (including inspired selection of covers).
CCAHLPA burned hot and bright for a short time and this live album is the pinnacle of their recorded work.
Commander Cody at His Best.......2006-06-25
These are all of the Commader Cody songs that have made him a legend. Highly recomended for any one into Rock-a-billy or Texas Rock.
Should have been a double live..........2005-12-08
...And it almost was a double live...the commander wanted it that way, record company said no...what do record companies know? Not much, sadly, becuase there WAS a WHOLE LOT more music from this concert at the world-famous Armadillo World Headquarters...the rest of this concert can be found on one of three albums...Sleazy Roadside Stories, Bar Room Classics, or Texas Roadhouse Favorites...the third mentioned is hard to find, apperantly a UK only release. Sleazy Roadside Stories has two tracks missing from the other two, but any of those are good if you want the rest of the concert. This is a great album, it has, arguably, the BEST version of "Riot In Cell Block #9" ever recorded...was that July 27 1973 or 1963? Hmmmm Anyway, crank this one up, crack open a lone star, and drift away to 525 and 1/2 Barton Springs Road in Austin, TX...in 1973, was there a better place to see the greatest progressive country band in history?
Good Rockin Tonight.......2005-08-19
There were a lot of groups that I enjoyed in my wilder 20's and 30's. Asleep at the Wheel was my favorite until I discovered Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. These guys could really rock and roll. Their early albums showed them finding their style and they kept getting better. Unfortunately, when they had really hit their stride, the real talent of the group went elsewhere and we were left with the Commander and a new group. He may have put the group together and his name at the front but Commander Cody was not the heart and soul of this group.
"Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas" is one of those great later albums when the group had found their sound and wasn't afraid to show it. My favorite cuts are "Sunset on the Sage", "Git It", "Diggy Liggy Lo", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Too Much Fun". They show that they can do ballads, rock and roll, and out of control rockabilly. I thing what gives them their special sound is the liberal use of the pedal steel guitar and the fiddle. It gives their sound a sort of "take off" to a higher level.
I saw Asleep at the Wheel live on several occassions (including the original cast) but I never had an opportunity to see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. There's nothing I can do to fill the void except continue to listen to their live albums. If you can't get excited about this album, you're on too much medication.
Superb live album of hippie-country-rock-swing.......2003-08-06
Following a third album that didn't shine as inventively as their first two, the Airmen returned with an absolutely brilliant document of all that their music meant. Recorded live at Austin, Texas' "World Armadillo Headquarters," the Airmen sound like the Buckaroos in their prime: relaxed, confident, and deadly across a wide variety of inter-related musical genres. They even cover Owens' "Crying Time," much to the crowd's delight.
The band swings effortlessly from the opening fiddle-driven instrumental into a rousing take of Elvis' "Good Rockin' Tonight." They cruise along with Johnny Horton's trucker themed "I'm Coming Home" only to plow headlong into the misery of the band's signature "Seeds and Stems (Again)." They harmonize with equal beauty for the cowboy tune, "Sunset on the Sage," and the doo-wop "Git It."
The Commander gets his boogie-woogie slot on the band-penned "Oh Momma," and his spoken-vocal leads a guitar-and-sax heavy take of Leiber & Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9. The Cajun-influenced "Diggy Liggy Lo" bursts with incredible, manic energy, and the band's "Too Much Fun" shows what a fine dance-combo they were, as does the rousing closer, "Mean Woman Blues."
This would be the last record the band would make before jumping to Warner Brothers, and it's a pitch-perfect document of all they created in their time at Paramount. All that's missing from this album is the dancer's sweat and a cold Shiner Bock -- the good times are preserved here for all to hear.

buy or rent the DVD instead.......2006-05-23
The DVD of this concert is excellent and sounds great. (Netflix has it)
However, the sound quality of the CD is flat----very dull. What a shame. I can't stand to listen to it.
A little sloppy, but fun.......2005-09-28
I saw the Mavericks a few times before they broke up, and on the Trampoline tour, I was disappointed that they had brought horns for the new songs, but sent them away for the older songs that could have been enhanced. It almost seemed lazy of Malo to bring horns, but not bother to write charts for the older songs.
That has been rectified, finally, by this album. Not all of the songs are gems, but the performances are solid and the horns absolutely add depth to the songs. My only real complaint is that the sound mix isn't great. Of course you lose some of the studio precision in a club setting, but it's not like these tapes came right off the board into your car. They could have cleared up some of the muddiness and mixed the horns and vocals a little higher.
Other than that, this is worth owning if you like the Mavericks.
Excellent live renditions of some of The Mavericks' best material.......2005-07-03
"The Definitive Collection" remains the best place for newcomers to sample The Mavericks, but this 2004 live album would make a terrific introduction as well. And fans will certainly want to hear this almost flawless live album featuring a horn-augumented version of The Mavericks performing most of their best and best-known material.
It's not spliced together from various recordings; "Live In Austin, Texas" was recorded in one "take" on June 2, 2004 at Stubb's Bar-B-Q in Austin, and The Mavericks' eclectic blend of rock n' roll, country, latin folk and sophisticated pop works well in this live setting...a couple of songs, like "Siboney" and "San Jose", never really get off the ground, but most of what's here is very good indeed. It's hard to sit still to these swinging, energetic renditions of songs like "Dance The Night Away" and "There Goes My Heart", and while it would have been nice to hear "Things I Cannot Change" and "Here Comes My Baby", there is more than enough good stuff here to keep the listener interested.
Singer Raul Malo is in top form, and all music-lovers should be able find something to like on this 73-minute collection of The Mavericks' melodic country-rock.
I dare you to not start bopping your head like a pigeon to "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down"!
Dwight Yoakam + Mariachis + Big Band Sound = The Mavericks.......2004-12-16
Awesome album; awesome group. An absolute must.
Been There, Would Do It Again.......2004-10-20
Okay, I was there. Third row, center, dancing in 90+ degree heat, with everyone else lucky enough to get a ticket. Austin and the Mavericks have a special love affair, with this the band's third appearance in this town in six months (they also played the 2003 Austin City Limits Music Festival a year ago September). The Mavericks made their comeback last year with their self-titled release featuring "I Want to Know" and a local favorite "San Jose", a tribute to a South Austin hotel the band likes to stay at when they are in town.
The Mavericks now include Eddie Perez on guitar, who fits comfortably in the band with his guitar virtuosity and accompanying vocals. The Mavericks-Eddie, Raul Malo, Paul Deakin, and Robert Reynolds-display consummate professionalism which is only surpassed by their down-to-earth humor and presence. The set list covers hits from the beginning of their career together to solo Raul offerings, including the swoonable "Siboney" originally recorded with Los Super Seven. "Every Little Thing About You" was a crowd favorite and the high temperature did not dissuade the hip swaying and singing along that permeated the night. Raul's voice has been compared to Roy Orbison's and it was a marvel to watch him hit the notes up close. The rest of the band was phenomenal too, with Robert and Paul switching instruments for a song or two. The spicy horn section, Jerry Dale McFadden on keys, and Alberto Salas on percussion made for a wonderful, too short night of incredible music. The Mavericks are better than ever and this album was well worth the wait.

RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "THE BLUE$ EXCHANGE RATE WITH JAPAN IS LOW!".......2007-02-24
BEING THAT I MADE THIS PURCHASE IN FEBRUARY 2007 AND THE CD WAS RELEASED IN 1984 I KNEW I WAS TAKING A CHANCE BASED ON ONE OF SHAQ'S "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer" MAIN CRITERIA: SOUND QUALITY! THIS CD TYPIFIES ONE OF MY WORST FEARS! POOR RECORDING QUALITY. ALBERT COLLINS, IS CERTAINLY ONE OF THE BEST ELECTRIC BLUES GUITARIST'S, BUT THE SOUND QUALITY IS VERY POOR! IN ADDITION, 39 MINUTES IS PRETTY SHORT FOR A LIVE BLUES PERFORMANCE. UNLESS YOU'RE A COLLECTOR, WHO JUST WANTS TO PUT A CHECK MARK ON ALL OF ALBERT'S RECORDINGS, I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THE PURCHASE.
It Doesn't Get Any Better Than Albert Collins LIVE.......2005-02-02
Mr. Collins is without a doubt my favorite guitarist. If you want to play in Texas, you have to play music people can dance to, and this influence is evident in Albert's live music. His Telecaster set up produces a more powerful sound, and his sense of humor can be detected in all his CDs. His potent blues riffs cut "way down deep into your soul".
This is a good CD with some soul piercing blues as well as some foot tapping good time tunes. The Master is accompanied by a small backup band. It's a gritty, all out jam.
A Blues Legend Makes His Guitar Sing!.......2001-06-27
Albert Collins unleashes the soul of blues guitar on this album! From beginning to end this recording cuts to the listener's core, as Collins' guitar performs musical surgery with a master's skill! All of the songs are great, but the real gem is "Stormy Monday." Collins' version is simply outstanding! In this song Albert Collins truly pierces the very soul of the listener, and lifts it to a higher place! The guitar solo is breathtaking! This album is full of great music, and should be owned by every real fan of blues. Buy it now and experience the depth of a blues legend.
Explosive mix!!!.......2001-05-24
This cd is really an explosive mix, blended with the great presence of this power trio in one of perhaps, the best "Live"performances ever released.Casey Jones on drums;A.C. Reed on sax and the "Iced-hot Man" Albert Collins is really an explosive mix you must try on!!!
Blues that WILL not let you sit down.......2000-07-23
It is impossible to describe the raw energy of this CD. Don't even think of sitting down! Your foot will be tapping inside of 30 seconds flat. You will be dancing in the kitchen. The greatest legal pick-me-up since caffein. It's like stickin' your finger right into the Blues socket when your momma isn't lookin'. It feels so fun it must be bad.
Carefully save this CD for that dark, grey day when you just don't have the get-up-and-go to do what you have to do that day. Then insert this CD and crank the volume waaay up. It could save your life.

Album Description
BAMBOOZLED: LIVE IN GERMANY captures one of America's most respected blues bands live in Göttingen in the fall of 2005. For more than 30 years, Mississippi native Kent "Omar" Dykes has led this never-say-die trio, making them a mainstay of the Austin, Texas music scene. Dykes' roots are all over Bamboozled. The songs span his entire recording career. And whether it's with his Bo Diddley-influenced "Magic Man," the John Lee Hooker-Tribute "Boogie Man" or in his vocal lineage, which can be traced back directly to Howlin' Wolf's midnight moan - Omar Dykes is not ashamed to admit he's part of a tradition. He plays blues, boogie and rock 'n' roll, without any musical frills or cheap showmanship. One might be tempted to think he'd get bored following this straight and narrow path for more than three decades. Exactly the opposite is true. As he has grown older and dealt with personal tragedy in recent years, Dykes' music has become deeper and more intense. This we hear most clearly on two knockout slow blues numbers, "East Side Blues" and "South Congress Blues."
The title of this release - "Bamboozled" - is a song from the Howlers' last studio CD, also included in this live set. Considering the band's authenticity, you couldn't have chosen a less appropriate name. To quote Clifford Antone, "You can count on Omar for the real thing and I think that's why people keep coming back year after year, to hear the real thing." Recorded in an intimate club setting in front of a small gathering of his most loyal fans, Bamboozled documents more than just an enjoyable night of blues. It allows us to peer into the soul and to consider the impressive career of a true master.
BAMBOOZLED is also being released on DVD - available through Amazon's DVD store.
Customer Reviews:
Omar is howling!.......2007-03-31
Ya gotta love this guy. We caught him for the first time here in Dallas (actually Arlington), last October when he played at the annual SRV Memorial Ride (being as SRV was from Dallas, it's a BIG Deal here eh).
He and the Howlers blew us away.
And this CD sounds exactly how they do on stage in front of several hundred, well on their way to being drunk/rowdy, bikers. I'd heard of O&TH but never seen/heard them myself. WOW...we will definitely be looking for them again.
What's nice about this CD is that it's a really solid sample of their style and technically, the CD is really well mastered. Difficult to believe it's a "live" recording at times...a couple of the songs were a tad muddy and I chalk that up to (again) being live but overall, top notch and I still give it a 5 on content and recording. Omar's GREAT and if you're a fan of this genre, then you owe it to yourself to check them out.

Alan Haynes is the most impressive guitarist I've heard live.......2003-11-20
Why doesn't Amazon have Alan Hayne's "Live at the Big Easy" album? I want to hear him by himself! I was in Austin for a conference, and accidentally wandered into Joe's Generic Bar on 6th Street, and was totally blown away by Alan Haynes! Apparently, he's better known in Europe than in his home country (the U.S.), and that's a real shame for us. I can't ever remember being so impressed, and I would have been just as impressed if he had been playing Carnegie Hall, and I had paid $50 for tickets.
Not Much Better Than This.......2002-09-12
Jim Suhler is good but Alan Haynes is great!... Check out the Red Guitar he has, it was Stevie Ray's on the Albert King Record- IN Sessions. Alan has been playing since he was 8 years old and is tremendous. Buy this CD and go check him out at Joe's Generic Bar on 6th Street in Austin (every tuesday night!). He will rock your world!!

Incomplete.......2006-12-31
Johnny plays great he is a slide guitar master . This show he played each song for 20 minutes making extended jams out of them .The reason i want to only show 3 Stars is because Edgar opened this concert when i saw it in NYC and Jammed with Johnny at the end on Sax .It rained alot that day and there were flood conditions , edgar played Frankinstein for about half an hour . I'm going to check Edgars catalog and see if there are any live jams with Johnny . Edgar is Johnnys equal on Sax.
johnnys fall.......2006-04-13
after being absent for 3 years with no new material johnny put out a live album recorded in 1997, with his failing health and skills this was released for one reason and one reason only, money, no growling vocals, no fluid speedy solos, i cried when i heard this album, almost as bad as i am a bluesman.
If you love Johnny............2004-08-27
Then this is a killer CD. Johnny and his band simply rip it up here. Johnny shows that he's one of the best on this recording. Sadly, he's one of the "forgotten" guitar greats when it comes to naming some of the best. But players KNOW Johnny, like Rory Gallagher, is one of the players they listen to when wanting to hear the best stuff out there.
I don't know what the negative reviewers here are listening to this on but, the CD thunders through my sound system ( Klipsch ) relentlessly. It never lets up. Johnny was "on" for this recording and I, for one, am thrilled!
If you play guitar, LISTEN to this CD. Learn from one of the great legends. I saw Johnny play twice. I am thankful that I did.
I hope this day never comes but, when Johnny passes on, people will "rediscover" this great performer again. And just like Rory Gallagher, I will say "I've always listened to him!!"
This recording makes me feel like I am in a smoke filled bar with my mouth open in awe the whole time. I'm betting that everyone stayed right in their seats for this whole show.
Thanks Johnny for keeping the blues alive! Go Johnny Go!! :)
A fine latter-day live album with plenty of blues goodness.......2004-02-08
Containing no hits but a number of fan favorites and cover songs, "Live In NY '97" was assembled with the assistance of Johnny Winter's fanclub, offering excellent versions of blues and R&B numbers, several instrumentals, and some of Winter's best guitar playing since the early 70s.
Most of these songs, and the instrumental numbers as well, are relatively low key, and that's when Johnny Winter's prowess as a guitar player is most apparent. He barely ever resorts to "shredding" or generic rock n' roll riffing; instead he plays one economical yet soulful solo after another, like on his version of Freddie King's "Hideaway", and a superb slide guitar intro to "The Sky Is Crying".
Those two tracks, along with "The Sun Is Shining" and "Got My Mojo Working", are among the highlights here, but there are really no "lowlights"...Winter's vocals may not have the power of, say Elmore James' or Muddy Waters', but he fares alright, and this album features some of his best blues playing of the 90s. And even the less than original "Johnny Guitar" sounds pretty good, as does the swaggering R&B of "Just A Little Bit".
Only the predictable and repetitive "She Likes To Boogie Real Low" is a let-down; everything else is good, or even great.
johnny dissappoints with live album.......2003-09-30
the rumors of johnny winters failing health and diminished guitar playing skills hit you right in the face in a lackluster live album from the once fiery albino. his vocals a very lethargic and his guitar solos are quite a struggle for a man who use to breeze across the guitar neck. for a non musician this is a listenable album with some good arrangements of classic blues songs, but for anyone who grew up knowing the skills of this guitar legend, this album is a sobering slap in the face.

Very Good !!!.......2004-09-27
Well, as a huge fan of the movie, I just HAD to check the soundtrack out !!! And, It was actually fairly good !!! However, the only flaws I could find, were that some of the songs seemed a little repetitive ... But, like I said, thats probably the only flaw !!! You really should check this out !!!
