The veteran Bay Area mandolin picker offers a pleasing collection of bluegrass instrumentals with the help of fellow Left Coasters such as Laurie Lewis, Herb Pedersen, Jim Nunally, and Sandy Rothman. Waller became close friends over the years with bluegrass mandolin patriarch Bill Monroe, who often hired Waller's High Country for his shows, and Waller's own robust, almost jarring picking style resembles Monroe's more closely than most. Five originals accompany Monroe classics and other traditionals. Waller isn't breaking new ground and that's fine with him, especially since the well-tilled soil is still plenty fertile. --Marc Greilsamer

    "Golden Gate Promenade" features 5 original tunes ("Golden Gate Promenade," "Golden Gate Waltz," "Rosine," "The Fox And The Geese," and "Climbing Up The Canyon"). There are 6 numbers written by or associated with Bill Monroe ("Danny Boy," "Blue Grass Stomp," "Watson Blues," "Pike County Breakdown," "Blue Moon Of Kentucky," and "Smoky Mountain Schottische"). 3 standards fill out the project ("Soldier's Joy," "Faded Love," and "When You And I Were Young, Maggie").

    Butch Waller was a founding member of the band High Country over 30 years ago and High Country is still going strong. As Sandy Rothman points out in his fine liner notes to "Golden Gate Promenade," Waller's mandolin style is very much based on Bill Monroe's "bold, bluesy downstroke picking." Despite the Monroe influence and all the Monroe tunes on this album, I never think of "Golden Gate Promenade" as being like a Monroe tribute; the 5 originals are excellent and Waller has truly developed a style of his own.

    This CD is great! If you are a fan of the late Bill Monroe, I strongly suggest you pick up this one! I'm sure "The Boss" is smiling down from the heavens with great pride, knowing that Butch Waller has carried on his legacy so well!
